一What a Bing Fire Day Master actually is
Bing Fire Day Master is the stem in the day pillar that stands for the person in a Bazi chart. It is yang Fire, and its classical image is the sun. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. It stands for the person, and every other stem in the chart is named by its relation to it. Bing, 丙, is yang Fire: the side of Fire that gives heat and light to everything at once and does not choose whom to warm. Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) describes Bing Fire as fierce and bright, at ease with Water that reflects it, and diminished by too much Earth that buries the light.
The common misreading is that “Bing Fire people are hot-tempered.” That turns the element into a mood. In the classical image, Bing is not a small fire inside the body; it is a sun. A sun can be too bright to look at, or it can be buried behind Earth, but it is not primarily an emotion. This article sorts Bing Fire into four kinds by birth season and will show you how to tell yours from the month branch.
Why the relation table looks the way it does
A Bazi stem is either yang or yin. The yang stems are Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren. The yin stems are Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui. Every relation name in the ten-god table is set by two things: which element the stem is, and whether that stem is yang or yin.
The elemental mechanics come from two cycles:
- Production cycle: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood.
- Control cycle: Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.
For a Bing Fire Day Master, that generates the following relationships:
- Wood produces Fire, so the two Wood stems are Resource stems.
- Fire produces Earth, so the two Earth stems are what Bing gives out.
- Fire controls Metal, so the two Metal stems are what Bing controls.
- Water controls Fire, so the two Water stems are what can control Bing.
- Fire itself is the Day Master row. Ding is the other Fire stem, opposite in polarity to Bing, so Ding is Rob Wealth.
What every other stem is to a Bing Fire Day Master
| Stem | Relation to a Bing Fire Day Master |
|---|---|
| Jia Wood (甲) | Indirect Resource |
| Yi Wood (乙) | Direct Resource |
| Bing Fire (丙) | Day Master itself |
| Ding Fire (丁) | Rob Wealth |
| Wu Earth (戊) | Eating God |
| Ji Earth (己) | Hurting Officer |
| Geng Metal (庚) | Indirect Wealth |
| Xin Metal (辛) | Direct Wealth |
| Ren Water (壬) | Seven Killings |
| Gui Water (癸) | Direct Officer |
The rule behind the table has two steps. Element picks the family: Wood produces Fire, so Wood is Resource; Fire produces Earth, so Earth is Output; Fire controls Metal, so Metal is Wealth; Water controls Fire, so Water is Officer or Killing. Polarity then picks the exact name. Jia Wood is yang and therefore Indirect Resource; Yi Wood is yin and therefore Direct Resource. The same split runs through the Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water rows.
The seasonal classification
The four kinds in this article are read from the earthly branch of the month pillar. That branch holds the season: spring is Yin, Mao, Chen; summer is Si, Wu, Wei; autumn is Shen, You, Xu; winter is Hai, Zi, Chou. The seasonal helper lists used for the four kinds follow Qiong Tong Bao Jian (穷通宝鉴). That method asks what a Bing Fire born in each of those seasons needs around it to be comfortable and useful.
This seasonal reading is not a strong or weak judgment about the Day Master. A chart can have a Bing Fire that is comfortable in its season, or uncomfortable in its season, without that deciding whether the Day Master is strong or weak. The sections that follow take each of the four seasons in turn and give you the check for that kind.
二The four kinds of Bing Fire Day Master charts
The same stem is a different creature in each of the four seasons it can be born into.
A Bing Fire born in a spring month and one born in a winter month enter opposite weather: spring supplies the Wood that produces Fire, while winter supplies the Water that controls it. The season is read from the month branch — the earthly branch of the month pillar. The four groups are:
| Season | Month branches |
|---|---|
| Spring | Yin 寅, Mao 卯, Chen 辰 |
| Summer | Si 巳, Wu 午, Wei 未 |
| Autumn | Shen 申, You 酉, Xu 戌 |
| Winter | Hai 亥, Zi 子, Chou 丑 |
Chen, Wei, Xu, and Chou are the transition months at the end of each season, and the classical method reads them with the season they close: Chen with spring, Wei with summer, Xu with autumn, Chou with winter. To find which kind you are looking at, take the month branch of the chart and set it next to that table.
The seasonal method used below is the one in Qiong Tong Bao Jian (穷通宝鉴), known as tiao hou (调候), “adjusting the climate.” It asks what a Bing Fire born in each season needs around it to be comfortable and useful. This is one classical school’s method, not the only one, and it is separate from the strong/weak judgement the free calculator makes from the whole chart. When the method calls a helper stem “present,” it means the stem appears in a visible year, month, or hour stem, or is hidden inside a branch.
1. Spring: Yin, Mao, and Chen months — the sun over spring wood
Spring is the season of Wood, and Wood produces Fire. A Bing Fire born in these months enters the year already being fed, so the seasonal method does not ask for more wood. It looks first for Ren Water (壬), the stem that can reflect the sun; a sun reflected in water keeps its quality as light instead of turning into glare. It looks second for Geng Metal (庚), because Metal produces Water and serves as the source that keeps that reflecting water supplied. The method is wary of Wu Earth (戊) and Ji Earth (己). Fire produces Earth, so a spring Bing that meets those two stems spends part of its light making Earth, and thick Earth then buries the light.
In a person born in these months:
- Asset. When a project, meeting, or team is first forming, a spring-born Bing tends to be the first source of warmth. That warmth gives other people permission to speak openly, and candour is returned for candour. The gift is starting things in a way that makes others want to join.
- Liability. The same ignition has trouble with the quiet parts of a decision. When someone says “let me think about that,” this shape tends to hear a gap and fill it with more proposals. In a disagreement, it can override the cautious person at the table not out of hostility but because the season is moving and the Bing is moving with it.
2. Summer: Si, Wu, and Wei months — the sun at full heat
Summer brings Bing Fire to the hottest point in the year. Nothing needs to produce the fire now; the problem is keeping it from scorching. The method looks first for Ren Water (壬). Water is the element that controls Fire, and in summer that control is what makes the heat usable rather than destructive. It looks second for Geng Metal (庚), because Metal produces Water and keeps that water sourced through the long hot months. The method is wary of more fire: Bing Fire (丙) and Ding Fire (丁). At Fire’s peak, another fire does not add a new quality; it simply raises the heat the chart already has too much of.
In a person born in these months:
- Asset. When a situation is genuinely hot — an emergency, a moved-up deadline, a room with no plan — a summer-born Bing tends to be the person others turn to. The intensity that is awkward in quiet moments becomes pace and clarity in a real one.
- Liability. Nothing in the season says stop. This shape tends to say yes past its own capacity, perform at full power until collapse, and then resent the people who let it. In an argument, its presence can act as pressure; quieter colleagues stop disagreeing and simply go quiet.
3. Autumn: Shen, You, and Xu months — the sun weakening
The autumn description in the method is one clause: the sun weakens. A Bing Fire born in Shen, You, or Xu month comes after Fire’s peak, and the season no longer feeds it the way spring did. The method looks first for Ren Water (壬): even at a lower height, the sun is still served by water that reflects it. It looks second for Jia Wood (甲), because Wood produces Fire and is the one helper that can feed the autumn sun directly. The method is wary of Wu Earth (戊) and Ji Earth (己). When the fire is already losing strength, producing Earth spends the remaining light, and the Earth that results dims it further.
In a person born in these months:
- Asset. Autumn Bing tends to be strongest at the moment of sorting, when more is on the table than can be kept and the group has to say no to some of it. In a budget cut or a plan review, this person tends to state without sentiment what should stay and what should go.
- Liability. Because the season itself lowers the light, this shape tends to accept a smaller place than it needs. When a louder colleague takes credit for an idea, the autumn Bing often lets it pass, reading the season’s dimness as its own limit rather than as the weather.
4. Winter: Hai, Zi, and Chou months — the sun in cold water
Winter is the season of Water, and the control cycle names the danger directly: Water controls Fire. In the coldest months, Bing Fire is the element being controlled, and the method describes that condition as cold and dim. The first helper is Jia Wood (甲). The production chain around winter is Water produces Wood, Wood produces Fire; when Jia Wood is present, the surplus water has somewhere to go, and the water that would otherwise douse the fire is spent making the wood that feeds it. The second helper is Wu Earth (戊). Earth controls Water, so Wu holds the winter water back from the flame. The method is wary of Ren Water (壬) and Gui Water (癸): when those two appear strongly, the water is neither converted nor held back — it does what water does to fire, and douses it.
In a person born in these months:
- Asset. Winter-born Bing tends to do best when the group has been through failure and no one expects the next attempt to work. Instead of raising the temperature, this person simply keeps working at the usual temperature, and that steadiness is trusted more than any display of heat.
- Liability. This is the Bing most likely to mistake the season for the self. When an idea is rejected once, the tendency is to conclude that the light itself is unwanted, withdraw the idea, and wait instead of revising and offering it again.

Telling which of the four kinds of Bing Fire you are looking at takes four steps, and the free calculator supplies every piece. The method is easier to compare with Yi Wood (乙) Day Master: what it is, the four kinds by birth season, and which one you are.
Start with a chart, not with what you feel. The four steps are:
- Look at the heavenly stem in the day pillar. That stem is the Day Master. For this article, you are checking charts where it is Bing.
- Read the earthly branch of the month pillar — the branch in the second of the four pillar pairs. That branch sets the season.
- Map the month branch to a season using the table below. The month branch is enough; no other branch matters for this step.
- Look for the season’s helper stems, visible or hidden, and note the stems the season is wary of. A hidden stem is one that sits inside an earthly branch rather than in a visible year, month, or hour stem position.
| Season | Month branches |
|---|---|
| Spring | Yin, Mao, Chen |
| Summer | Si, Wu, Wei |
| Autumn | Shen, You, Xu |
| Winter | Hai, Zi, Chou |
The charts above use weighted totals, and the weighting follows what a visible stem and a hidden stem are worth: visible stem 1.0, hidden main qi 1.0, hidden middle qi 0.5, hidden residual qi 0.3. So when the notes say a helper is “present at 1.0,” that means it appears somewhere once at full weight, or twice at smaller hidden weights. And when the notes say a helper is absent, it means neither the visible stems nor the hidden stems contain it.
This seasonal check only tells you which of the four seasons the chart belongs to and what is around the Bing Fire. It is not the strong/weak judgement — that comes separately from the free calculator, and this article will not decide it for you.
Chart A: a winter month, controlled by Water
Chart A belongs to winter because its month branch is Hai, and its heaviest group is Control at 6.3.
The month branch is Hai, which sits in the winter row. Its day master is Bing, and the group totals around it are Support 1.5, Output 1.0, Wealth 0.0, and Control 6.3. The Control group is made of Direct Officer and Seven Killings, and in this chart those two names dominate.
The visible stems are Gui Direct Officer in the year and month, Bing Day Master in the day, and Ren Seven Killings in the hour. Hidden inside the branches, the two Hai branches each hold Ren Seven Killings and Jia Indirect Resource; Zi holds Gui Direct Officer; and Chen holds Wu Eating God, Yi Direct Resource, and Gui Direct Officer. The weighted totals are Direct Officer 3.3, Seven Killings 3.0, Eating God 1.0, Indirect Resource 1.0, and Direct Resource 0.5. No Wealth group appears.
Now apply the winter helper list. For a Bing Fire born in winter, the method looks first for Jia Wood and then for Wu Earth, and it is wary of Ren Water and Gui Water. In this chart Jia is present at 1.0 and Wu is present at 1.0, so both winter helpers appear. But Ren Water is present at 3.0 and Gui Water is present at 3.3. The season’s wary stems are far larger than its helper stems, which matches the heavy Control group. That is a structural description, not a verdict about strength.
Chart B: a spring month, dominated by Earth output
Chart B belongs to spring because its month branch is Chen, and its heaviest group is Output at 7.0.
Chen is the spring transition month, so by the seasonal method it is read with spring. The group totals are Support 1.1, Output 7.0, Wealth 1.3, and Control 0.8. The Output group is Eating God plus Hurting Officer, and in this chart it is not close.
The visible stems are Ji Hurting Officer in the year, Wu Eating God in the month, Bing Day Master in the day, and Wu Eating God in the hour. Hidden inside the branches, Chou holds Ji Hurting Officer, Gui Direct Officer, and Xin Direct Wealth; Chen holds Wu Eating God, Yi Direct Resource, and Gui Direct Officer; each of the two Xu branches holds Wu Eating God, Xin Direct Wealth, and Ding Rob Wealth. The weighted totals are Eating God 5.0, Hurting Officer 2.0, Direct Wealth 1.3, Direct Officer 0.8, Rob Wealth 0.6, and Direct Resource 0.5. The Output group alone accounts for 7.0 of the chart’s weight.
Spring is the season where the helper list calls first for Ren Water, then Geng Metal. In Chart B, Ren is absent and Geng is absent. Spring is wary of Wu Earth and Ji Earth, and in this chart those two are the biggest presences: Wu Earth at 5.0 and Ji Earth at 2.0. So the chart has none of the two helpers its season looks for, and a large amount of the two stems its season is wary of. That is just what the monthly check says — it is not the same as a strength score.
Chart C: another spring month, but supported by Wood
Chart C also belongs to spring — its month branch is Mao — but its heaviest group is Support at 8.0, not Output.
Mao is a spring month branch, so Chart C falls in the same seasonal row as Chart B. The difference is where that chart’s weight sits. Here the group totals are Support 8.0, Output 1.1, Wealth 0.0, and Control 0.0. Nothing has enough weight to form a Wealth or Control group.
The visible stems are Jia Indirect Resource in the year, Ding Rob Wealth in the month, Bing Day Master in the day, and Jia Indirect Resource in the hour. Hidden inside the branches, each Yin branch holds Jia Indirect Resource, Bing Friend, and Wu Eating God; Mao holds Yi Direct Resource; and Wu holds Ding Rob Wealth and Ji Hurting Officer. The weighted totals are Indirect Resource 4.0, Rob Wealth 2.0, Friend 1.0, Direct Resource 1.0, Eating God 0.6, and Hurting Officer 0.5. The Support group adds to 8.0 mostly through Resource stems, not through Control or Output.
The same spring helper check applies here: Ren is absent, Geng is absent. And the stems spring is wary of are present but small: Wu Earth at 0.6 and Ji Earth at 0.5.
Chart B and Chart C are the sharpest contrast. Both were born in spring. Both lack the same two seasonal helpers. But B is output-heavy, with its weight concentrated in the Earth stems that spring warns about, while C is support-heavy, with its weight concentrated in Resource and Friend stems. Chart A sits apart from both: it is a winter chart whose largest group is the Water that controls Fire.
These three are structural illustrations, not anyone’s fate. Your own check ends at which season the month branch gives you and which helper stems are around — the strong/weak report is the calculator’s next step, not a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The stem and the season are fixed; what you arrange around them is not.
Qiong Tong Bao Jian’s seasonal lists describe the climate a Bing Fire works well in. They are not grades on the chart. The same Bing born in the same month can be placed in different patterns of pace, work, and company, and that placement is where a chart becomes either steady light or glare and burnout. This point connects directly with Ding Fire (丁) Day Master: what it is, the four kinds by birth season, and which one you are.
Spring: give the spring sun a reflection
The sun over spring wood already has Wood producing Fire, so momentum is not the shortage. What the method wants is Ren Water to reflect the light, Geng Metal as the source of that Water, and no thick Earth burying the light.
- End a task in a visible form—a page, a demo, a short talk. The reflection coming back from another person shows where the effort is aimed.
- Put one reviewer on the work before it is finished; the review’s fixed conditions—time, format, brief—are the Geng Metal that keeps the Water of feedback flowing.
- When other people’s errands fill the week, the thick Earth has arrived. Keep a piece of work that carries your trace.
Summer: cool the heat, don’t add to it
A summer Bing Fire is at its hottest. The method wants Ren Water to temper it, Geng Metal to keep the Water supplied, and no more Fire from Bing or Ding.
- Open a project with a written measure of done. When the work meets that measure it stops; the measure is the Ren Water.
- Decline the duplicate project, the extra group, the request that only adds Fire. Fire added to Fire becomes glare.
- Keep a fixed stopping hour. That hour is the cooling Water arriving on schedule instead of arriving as exhaustion.
Autumn: choose the room that sees you
The sun weakens in autumn. Ren Water is still wanted to reflect it, Jia Wood is wanted to feed it, and Earth is the thing that would dim it further.
- Put one replenishing activity into the week before the week fills: a skill practice, a class, time with someone who restores you. That is the Jia Wood.
- Do visible work where the contribution is attributed. With less light to spare, one viewer who can say “that part was yours” is more useful than a vague audience.
- Set a limit on helping tasks. The Earth that dims an autumn Bing is often a pile of kind favors that leave no trace of the person who did them.
Winter: build a routine that holds water back
A winter Bing Fire is cold and dim. The method wants Jia Wood first as fuel and Wu Earth second, because Earth controls Water. Ren Water and Gui Water are the excess to be wary of.
- Schedule fuel like a deliverable: a weekly class, a regular hour with people who need nothing from you, a protected morning block. Winter Bing produces from stored fuel.
- Keep a fixed end to the workday and a fixed place where work happens. That routine is the winter Wu Earth of ordinary life: incoming demands slow down before they reach the Fire.
- A week built almost entirely from other people’s urgent requests, with no time belonging to you, is the unchecked Water the season warns about. That shape tends to douse the Fire rather than challenge it.
Common misreadings
“Bing Fire people are hot-tempered.” The classical image is heat and light that reach everything at once; it does not choose whom to warm. A Bing Fire under thick Earth tends to dim more than to flare, and a winter Bing Fire is described as cold and dim, not angry. Temper is personal; the stem is elemental.
“A Bing Fire born in summer is powerful; one born in winter is weak.” This turns the seasonal method into a strength verdict. Qiong Tong Bao Jian lists what each season needs for comfort and usefulness: summer asks for cooling, winter asks for fuel and Earth to hold back the excess. Neither is a prize. Strength is judged from the whole chart, by the free calculator, not by the month branch alone.
“If a helper stem is absent, the chart is missing something important.” The helper list is one classical school’s suggestion about climate, read from one branch. An absent helper is a description, not a diagnosis. The rest of the chart still contains Metal, Water, Wood, and Earth in other positions; no single stem and no single season decides what a person does with them.
Where this stops
The Day Master is one of the eight stems in the chart, and the season is one of the eight positions. The seasonal method reads one branch through one classical lens; it is not a strong/weak calculation. Whether a particular Bing Day Master is strong or weak is answered by the free calculator from the full chart. Nothing here is a prediction. A winter Bing Fire with a great deal of Water is not a verdict; it is a shape that suits some arrangements better than others, and those arrangements are largely yours to make.
