The hour pillar is the easiest thing to get wrong

Your hour pillar turns over every two hours of true solar time — the sun's time above your birthplace, not the clock on the wall. Three corrections stand between the two, and any one of them can put you in a different pillar.

The time zone actually in force that day

Not the zone the place keeps now — the one it kept on your date. China ran summer time from 1986 to 1991. Britain ran double summer time through the war. Spain moved to Central European Time in 1940 and never moved back. The rule is looked up for your exact date and place.

Your longitude inside that zone

One zone can cover thirty degrees of longitude, and its clock is only true on a single meridian. Madrid keeps Central European Time while sitting west of Greenwich. The gap between your birthplace and its zone meridian comes off at four minutes per degree.

The sun's own irregularity

The earth's orbit is not a circle, so a sundial runs anywhere from 14.6 minutes behind to 16.5 minutes ahead of an even clock, depending on the day of the year. That is the equation of time, and it is applied as well.

  • You type the time you were given. This calculator never asks you to round it into a two-hour block — the block is the answer it is working out.
  • The month pillar turns at the solar term, not on the first of the month, so a birthday near the turn is not guessed.
  • If you do not know the hour, you get three pillars and a note saying so, rather than a quiet assumption of noon.

The reading is handed the whole chart, not eight characters

Most AI readings receive your eight characters and are left to work out the rest — which means guessing the two things everything else rests on: whether your Day Master is strong or weak, and which elements actually help you. Guess those wrong and every paragraph after them is wrong. Here the engine settles them first, and hands the reading:

  • The ten god of every pillar, and of every hidden stem inside the branches
  • The weighted element totals, on the same weighting published above
  • The strength verdict with its arithmetic — season, support, drain — which the reading is told to take as given and never argue with

The one judgment an AI should never make on its own is what is good for you. On this site it is computed before the reading starts, and the reading is not allowed to overrule it.

Questions people ask

What is a Day Master?

The Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — the single character that stands for you in the chart. Everything else is read as a relationship to it: what feeds it, what drains it, what it controls.

What if I don't know my birth hour?

Tick the box and the calculator builds a three-pillar chart instead. Roughly a quarter of what a full chart says lives in the hour pillar, so the rest of the reading holds up fine without it.

Why does the place of birth matter?

Clock time is a political convention; a chart runs on the sun. We correct for longitude, apply the equation of time, and use the time-zone rule that was actually in force on your birthday.

What are luck pillars?

Ten-year periods that start at a fixed age and run in sequence for the rest of your life. Each drops a new stem and branch onto your chart. Most of what people call "timing" in Bazi is the interaction between the natal chart and the pillar currently running.

Is Bazi the same as the Chinese zodiac?

No. The zodiac animal is one character out of eight. Bazi reads all eight, plus the hidden stems and the ten-year luck pillars that move across them.
