一 What it is
What the Bing Yin Day Pillar Means
The Bing Yin Day Pillar is a day pillar whose day stem is Bing, Yang Fire, sitting on the Yin branch — a pairing that gives the Fire Day Master both a hidden Fire root and a Wood resource in the same branch. Think of a campfire built on a dry, resinous log: the log is not the flame, but it feeds and sustains it, while the embers inside the log keep the fire alive even when the visible flame dies down.
What distinguishes this pillar is how its hidden stems divide their roles. Yin hides Jia, Bing, and Wu. The hidden Bing is the Fire root — the same element as the actual Day Master, which is what a root requires. The hidden Jia is Yang Wood, and for a Bing Day Master Wood is the resource element, not a Fire root. These are two different functions inside one branch, and treating Jia as a Fire root would misread the pillar.
Yin is also the Birth phase for Bing, so the Day Master is at its birth position here, not infancy, pregnancy, or an inherently weak state. The same branch is Jia's Adulthood phase, which is a separate stem-branch lookup reference, not a strength score or a health or age reading. In the teaching charts, Ren Seven Killings and Gui Direct Officer appear as Water officers relative to Bing; they are not Jia or Yi resource labels. Fire roots for Bing also appear through hidden Bing in Si and hidden Ding in Wu, so a Killing-Resource structure is not automatic.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Bing Yin in Your Chart
In the Four Pillars grid, find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the day branch. For this pillar the stem is 丙 and the branch is 寅, so the Day Master is 丙 only, while the day pillar is both characters together. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside the branch cell; in 寅 they are 甲, 丙 and 戊, which is why 甲 reads as Indirect Resource and the hidden 丙 as a Friend rather than a second Day Master.
The main grid has no dedicated growth-phase row. Phase is a stem-branch lookup, so use the article tables or the full overview to see that 丙 in 寅 is Birth. Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase or a strength verdict, and Day Master strength is a separate estimate. If the hour is unknown, treat it as unconfirmed; near a day boundary, calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and time instead of assuming a universal rollover rule.
三 How to read it
How to Read Bing Yin Step by Step
Start with the cycle index: 丙寅 is the third pillar of the sixty-pillar cycle. This fixes the legal pairing of yang Fire stem with yang Wood branch. Next read the stem element and polarity: 丙 is yang Fire, so the actual Day Master is yang Fire. Only after that do you open the branch and assign hidden Ten Gods relative to 丙. Skipping the index or polarity layer causes the common error of treating 寅 as if it were a Fire root simply because the pillar is called Bing Yin.
Inside 寅, the hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊. Because the day stem is 丙, 甲 Wood is Indirect Resource, 丙 Fire is Friend, and 戊 Earth is Eating God. The hidden 丙 is the Fire root, since a root must hide the same element as the actual Day Master. The 甲 is resource, not a Fire root, even though it sits in the same branch. This is why Bing Yin combines a Fire root with a Wood resource rather than being reducible to one label. The yin tiger earthly branch page explains how 寅 also functions as the Adulthood phase for 甲 and the Birth phase for 丙.
Phase belongs to a separate layer. Using the stem-branch lookup, 丙 at 寅 is Birth, and the pillar stem 丙 at 寅 is also Birth. Birth is not infancy, pregnancy or an automatic sign of weakness. A chart can show 壬 Seven Killings and 癸 Direct Officer toward 丙 while the day branch still supplies a Fire root and a Wood resource. Do not convert those officer stars into 甲 or 乙 resource labels, and do not assume a Killing-Resource structure appears automatically. Compare with the two teaching charts: in A, 丙 also roots in 巳; in B, 丁 roots in 午. Those are separate pillars, not substitutes for the Bing Yin day branch.
Finally, read the complete chart. Count visible stems, branches, hidden stems, phases and relationships together, then treat any Day Master strength figure as a separate UI estimate rather than something the hidden weights prove. The weights below are fixed calculator conventions, not season-adjusted strength units. This repeatable order—cycle index, stem element and polarity, hidden Ten Gods, phase, complete chart—keeps each layer distinct and prevents a single branch from being asked to carry every meaning at once.
- Hidden stems in 寅: 甲 Indirect Resource (1), 丙 Friend (0.5), 戊 Eating God (0.3).
- Day pillar: 丙寅, cycle index 3, Day Master 丙 at Birth (长生).
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Bing | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | Indirect Resource | 1 |
| 丙 | Friend | 0.5 |
| 戊 | Eating God | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Bing phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 丙寅 | 3 | 长生 Birth |
四 When the reading changes
What the Bing Yin day pillar actually contains
丙寅 as a day pillar places Yang Fire on Yang Wood. The branch 寅 hides 甲 Indirect Resource, 丙 Friend, and 戊 Eating God, so the same pillar carries both a resource stem and a Fire root. That distinction matters: 甲 Wood feeds 丙 Fire as resource, while the hidden 丙 is Fire of the same element as the Day Master and therefore counts as a root. The phase reference for 丙 at 寅 is Birth, and 甲 at 寅 is Adulthood; these are stem-branch lookup values, not a strength score, health marker, or prediction. For 丙, Wood is the resource element, so 壬 Seven Killings and 癸 Direct Officer are not resource labels even when they appear prominently. The two teaching charts below both use 丙 as the actual Day Master, which keeps the Ten Gods relative to 丙 throughout.
Season and context change what the same pillar means
In chart A, 丙寅 sits under 壬子 month and 壬申 year, with 癸巳 hour. Water is heavy in the visible stems, and the Day Master phase at 子 is Conception while the year branch 申 gives Sickness. The 寅 branch still supplies 甲 Indirect Resource and a hidden 丙 root, and 巳 hour hides another 丙 Friend, so Fire is not absent. But the surrounding water pressure means the resource and root are doing different work than they would in a summer chart. Reading 壬 and 癸 as if they were Jia or Yi resource would mislabel the actual relationship: they are Seven Killings and Direct Officer to 丙. The useful question is how the hidden 甲 and 丙 interact with that water-heavy context, not whether the chart is automatically weak.
Root, resource, and relationship reading limits
In chart B, 丙寅 appears with 丙午 month, 壬午 year, and 癸巳 hour. Fire is far more visible: 午 hides 丁 Rob Wealth, 巳 hides 丙 Friend, and the Day Master phase at 午 is Emperor. Here the same 寅 branch still provides 甲 Indirect Resource and a 丙 root, but the surrounding Fire changes how those hidden stems are read. A hidden 丙 in 寅 is a Fire root because it matches the Day Master element; a visible 丙 in another stem is a peer, not a hidden root. Relationship readings should stay within what the branches and stems actually show. The presence of 壬 Seven Killings and 癸 Direct Officer does not by itself create a Killing-Resource structure, and the hidden 甲 does not automatically convert every water stem into resource. To read the phase labels accurately across stems and branches, see how to use the 12 growth phases.
Career and reflection limits for Bing Yin
Career reflection can note that 寅 hides 戊 Eating God alongside 甲 Indirect Resource and 丙 Friend, giving the pillar an expressive and supportive internal mix. But that observation does not prescribe a job, income path, or relationship outcome. Chart A's water-heavy stems and chart B's Fire-heavy stems produce different visible pressures even though both share the same day pillar. The Day Master strength estimate in the calculator UI is a separate calculation from these hidden weights, and the weights themselves are fixed conventions rather than season-adjusted units. Use the pillar as a lens for reflection, not as a basis for financial, medical, relationship, or career decisions.

Chart A: Bing on Yin in Context
In chart A, the day pillar is 丙寅: Yang Fire on Yang Wood. The actual Day Master is 丙, so every hidden stem is read relative to Bing. Yin hides 甲 (Indirect Resource), 丙 (Friend) and 戊 (Eating God). The hidden 丙 is the Fire root — the same element as the Day Master. The hidden 甲 is Wood, which is Resource for Bing, not a Fire root. This distinction matters because a label like "Yin is a root" can be repeated without checking which element actually hides there.
The day pillar also carries a phase reference. Bing at Yin is Birth (长生), and Yin is Jia's Adulthood (临官). Birth is a phase lookup, not infancy, pregnancy, or an automatic statement that the chart is weak. In chart A, the year and month stems are 壬 (Seven Killings), and the hour stem is 癸 (Direct Officer). Those are Water officers relative to Bing; they are not Jia or Yi Resource labels. A Killing-Resource structure does not follow automatically from seeing Water controls Fire alongside Wood.
Contrast the day branch with the hour branch 巳, which hides 丙 as Friend — another Fire root for Bing. Contrast that with the month branch 子, which hides only 癸 (Direct Officer), a Water stem with no Fire root. Same chart, different branches: the element that hides, not the branch name alone, decides whether a root is present.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 丙 | 癸 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 寅 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Seven Killings | Friend | Day Master | Direct Officer |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Rob Wealth (1) 己 Hurting Officer (0.5) |
丁 Rob Wealth (1) 己 Hurting Officer (0.5) |
甲 Indirect Resource (1) 丙 Friend (0.5) 戊 Eating God (0.3) |
丙 Friend (1) 庚 Indirect Wealth (0.5) 戊 Eating God (0.3) |
| Bing Day Master phase | 帝旺 Emperor | 帝旺 Emperor | 长生 Birth | 临官 Adulthood |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 长生 Birth | 胎 Conception |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 5.5, Earth 1.6, Metal 0.5, Water 2.
Reading the Bing Yin Day Pillar in Chart B
Chart B keeps 丙 as the actual Day Master, so every Ten Gods label stays relative to Bing Yang Fire. The day branch 寅 hides 甲 Indirect Resource, 丙 Friend, and 戊 Eating God. The hidden 丙 is a Fire root because it matches the Day Master's element; the 甲 is Wood, which is Resource for Bing, not a Fire root. That distinction matters: a same-element root and a producing-element resource do different work.
Phase is a stem-branch lookup, not a strength score. 丙 at 寅 reads Birth, and 甲 at 寅 reads Adulthood. Birth is not infancy, pregnancy, or an inherently weak chart. The same 寅 branch can be Birth for one stem and Adulthood for another, which is why the pairing must be read stem by stem.
Chart B changes the surrounding pillars: year 壬午 and month 丙午 replace chart A's 壬申 and 壬子. The 午 branches hide 丁 Rob Wealth and 己 Hurting Officer, adding Fire roots through 丁 and Earth through 己. 壬 remains Seven Killings and 癸 remains Direct Officer toward Bing, so the Officer-Killing presence is not automatically a Killing-Resource structure just because Wood sits in the day branch.
For comparison, the jia yin day pillar treats 甲 as the Day Master, where 寅's hidden 甲 is a Wood root and Water is Resource. Under Bing, Wood is Resource instead.
Reader check: confirm the actual day stem first, then ask whether each hidden stem shares the Day Master's element (root) or produces it (Resource). Verify the phase by direct stem-branch lookup rather than assuming a Birth label means a weak chart.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
