一 What it is
The Day Pillar is the third pair of characters in a Bazi chart. Its upper part is the Day Master, a Heavenly Stem. Its lower part is the Day Branch, an Earthly Branch. The Day Master is the reference point for the Ten Gods: every other stem and every hidden stem is compared to it to determine its Ten Gods relationship. The Day Branch is not a second Day Master. It is a distinct character with its own hidden stems, which also receive Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
In the Four Pillars, the Day column sits between the Month and Hour columns. The Year column is the wider calendar and social frame; the Month column is the seasonal branch and context; the Hour column is birth-time-dependent. This order matters because the Day Pillar is not read in isolation, but in relation to the season, the other stems, and the hidden stems in the branches.
The Day Master is often described as the chart’s reference point. That does not mean it is the whole person; the Ten Gods system simply needs a fixed stem to compare against. If the Day Master is Jia Wood, every other character is labeled by its relationship with Jia Wood. A stem that supports Jia Wood may be called Direct or Indirect Resource; one Jia Wood produces, Eating God or Hurting Officer; one Jia Wood controls, Direct or Indirect Wealth; one that controls Jia Wood, Direct Officer or Seven Killings; one of the same element, Friend or Rob Wealth. These labels are structural, not moral.
The Day Branch contains hidden stems. For example, 寅 contains 甲, 丙 and 戊 in list order. With Jia Wood as Day Master, those hidden stems receive the labels Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The branch is a container; the hidden stems are its contents. Reading the Day Branch means reading both.
The Day Pillar is calculated from true solar time. Year and Month follow China time; Day and Hour use true solar time. If the time is unknown, no hour column should be invented. The Day calculation still uses the recorded date, place and true-solar-time convention; close to a local day boundary, exact time is needed before treating the Day Pillar as final. The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. Those weights are not an overall strong or weak verdict, but a way of displaying hidden stems.
Traditional associations are symbolic. The Day Master is not a personality verdict; the Day Branch is not a relationship forecast; the Ten Gods are not promises or diagnoses. They are labels describing structural relationships between characters.
二 Where to find it in your chart
The Day Pillar appears in the third column of the Four Pillars. On the calculator page at https://bazi-calculator.org/, you enter birth date, time and place and see the Four Pillars displayed as four columns. Each column has a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. The Day column is the third one. Its top character is the Day Master. Its bottom character is the Day Branch. The Year column is first, the Month column is second, the Day column is third, and the Hour column is fourth.
Year and Month follow China time. Day and Hour use true solar time. This is important because the Day Pillar is not calculated from the same time standard as the Year and Month columns. If you are comparing charts or checking a calculation, remember that the Day column belongs to the true solar time group. If the time is unknown, no hour column should be invented. Leave the Hour column uncomputed when birth time is unknown. For a recorded date away from a local day boundary, the Day Pillar can still be shown; close to that boundary, exact time remains necessary.
The Day column sits between the Month column and the Hour column. The Month column gives the seasonal branch and context. The Day column gives the Day Master and Day Branch. The Hour column is birth-time-dependent. The Year column gives the wider calendar and social frame. When you look at the Day Pillar, you are looking at the reference point for the Ten Gods and at a branch with hidden stems. You are not looking at the whole chart. You are looking at one column with two characters and their relationships.
In the first teaching chart, the pillars are 甲子, 丁卯, 甲寅 and 乙丑. The Day column is 甲寅. The Day Master is 甲. The Day Branch is 寅. The hidden stems in 寅 are 甲, 丙 and 戊. Relative to the Jia Wood Day Master, those hidden stems are Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Year column is 甲子, with hidden stem 癸 labeled Direct Resource. The Month column is 丁卯, with hidden stem 乙 labeled Rob Wealth. The Hour column is 乙丑, with hidden stems 己, 癸 and 辛 labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
In the second teaching chart, the pillars are 庚午, 戊寅, 甲寅 and 乙丑. The Day column is again 甲寅. The Day Master is 甲. The Day Branch is 寅. The hidden stems in 寅 are 甲, 丙 and 戊, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Year column is 庚午, with hidden stems 丁 and 己 labeled Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth. The Month column is 戊寅, with hidden stems 甲, 丙 and 戊 labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Hour column is 乙丑, with hidden stems 己, 癸 and 辛 labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
Notice that the Day Pillar is not repeated in the Year, Month or Hour columns. Each column has its own role. The Year column is the wider calendar and social frame. The Month column is the seasonal branch and context. The Day column is the Day Master and Day Branch. The Hour column is birth-time-dependent. When you read the Day Pillar, you read it in its position, not as a duplicate of the other columns.
| Column | What to observe first | Role in this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Wider calendar and social frame | Read alongside the focus |
| Month | Seasonal branch and context | Read alongside the focus |
| Day | Day Master and Day Branch | This article’s focus |
| Hour | Birth-time-dependent column | Read alongside the focus |
In every column, read the stem above the branch, then inspect any hidden stems inside the branch. The four positions are part of one chart.
三 How to read it
Reading the Day Pillar is a repeatable observation sequence. You do not need to calculate anything beyond what the calculator displays, invent totals, or issue verdicts. Follow the same steps each time, using only the facts supplied by the chart. The method is easier to compare with Month Pillar in Bazi: Why the Seasonal Branch Matters.
Locate the Day Column
Find the third column in the Four Pillars. Confirm you are looking at the third pair of characters. The top character is the Day Master; the bottom character is the Day Branch. Do not confuse it with the Month or Hour column. The order is Year, Month, Day, Hour.
Identify the Day Master
Read the top character of the Day column. In both teaching charts, the Day Master is 甲, Jia Wood. It is the reference point for the Ten Gods. Every other stem and every hidden stem is compared to this character. The Day Master itself is not labeled with a Ten God; it is the standard against which labels are assigned.
Identify the Day Branch
Read the bottom character of the Day column. In both teaching charts, the Day Branch is 寅. It is distinct from the Day Master and has its own hidden stems: 甲, 丙 and 戊 in list order. Those hidden stems receive Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master.
List Hidden Stems in Order
For 寅, the list is 甲, 丙, 戊. Order matters for the engine's displayed convention. The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. The first hidden stem receives the first weight, the second receives the second, and the third receives the third. These weights are not an overall strong or weak verdict; they are a display convention.
Assign Ten Gods Labels
When the Day Master is Jia Wood, 甲 is Friend, 丙 is Eating God, and 戊 is Indirect Wealth. These labels describe structural relationships. They are not predictions, diagnoses, promises, relationship claims, career claims or personality verdicts. They are symbolic associations within the Ten Gods system.
Compare Hidden Stems Across Branches
In the first teaching chart, the Year branch 子 has hidden stem 癸 labeled Direct Resource. The Month branch 卯 has hidden stem 乙 labeled Rob Wealth. The Day branch 寅 has hidden stems 甲, 丙 and 戊 labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Hour branch 丑 has hidden stems 己, 癸 and 辛 labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer. You are not adding these into a verdict, but observing which Ten Gods appear and where.
Compare Visible Stems
In the first teaching chart, the Year stem is 甲, the Month stem is 丁, the Day stem is 甲, and the Hour stem is 乙. The Day Master is 甲. Other visible stems are compared to it, giving a second layer of observation alongside the hidden stems. Again, you are not calculating a strong or weak verdict, but observing relationships.
Repeat for the Second Chart
The Day Master is still 甲. The Day Branch is still 寅. The hidden stems are still 甲, 丙 and 戊. But the other columns differ. The Day Pillar itself has not changed, but its surroundings have. That is why you read the Day Pillar in context, not in isolation.
Distinguish Visible from Hidden
Visible information is the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of each column. Hidden information is the hidden stems inside each branch. The Day Master and Day Branch are visible; the hidden stems of the Day Branch are hidden. Both layers matter, but they are not the same layer. When describing the Day Pillar, say clearly whether you mean the visible Day Master, the visible Day Branch, or the hidden stems inside the Day Branch.
Avoid Turning Observations into Verdicts
The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. Weights and raw element counts are not an overall strong or weak verdict. Traditional associations are symbolic; they are not forecasts. When you finish, you should have a clear description of the Day Master, the Day Branch, the hidden stems, and their Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master. That description is the reading of the Day Pillar at the observation level.
四 Different scenarios
Variation One: Same Day Master, Different Year Column
In the first teaching chart, the Year column is 甲子. In the second, it is 庚午. The Day Master is 甲 in both charts, and the Day Branch is 寅 in both. The Day Branch hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊 in both, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The difference lies in the Year column. In the first chart, the Year stem is 甲 and the Year branch is 子 with hidden stem 癸 labeled Direct Resource. In the second, the Year stem is 庚 and the Year branch is 午 with hidden stems 丁 and 己 labeled Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth. This point connects directly with Hour Pillar in Bazi: What Birth Time Changes in Your Chart.
The concrete check is this: locate the Year column, read its stem and branch, then list its hidden stems and their Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master. Do not change the Day Master or the Day Branch. They remain 甲 and 寅. The variation is in the Year column, not in the Day Pillar. This shows that the same Day Pillar can appear alongside different Year columns, and the observation sequence stays the same.
Variation Two: Same Day Master, Different Month Column
In the first teaching chart, the Month column is 丁卯. In the second, it is 戊寅. The Day Master is 甲 in both charts, and the Day Branch is 寅 in both. The Day Branch hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊 in both, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The difference is in the Month column. In the first chart, the Month stem is 丁 and the Month branch is 卯 with hidden stem 乙 labeled Rob Wealth. In the second, the Month stem is 戊 and the Month branch is 寅 with hidden stems 甲, 丙 and 戊 labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth.
The concrete check is this: locate the Month column, read its stem and branch, then list its hidden stems and their Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master. Notice that in the second chart, the Month branch 寅 has the same hidden stems as the Day branch 寅. That does not make the Month column the Day column. The Month column is still the seasonal branch and context. The Day column is still the Day Master and Day Branch. The variation is in the Month column, not in the Day Pillar.
Variation Three: Same Day Master, Different Hour Column
In both teaching charts, the Hour column is 乙丑. The Day Master is 甲 in both charts, and the Day Branch is 寅 in both. The Day Branch hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊 in both, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Hour column is the same in both charts: stem 乙, branch 丑, hidden stems 己, 癸 and 辛 labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
The concrete check is this: locate the Hour column, read its stem and branch, then list its hidden stems and their Ten Gods labels relative to the Day Master. In these two teaching charts, the Hour column does not vary. That is useful for comparison because it isolates the Year and Month columns as the changing parts. The Day Pillar remains 甲寅 in both charts. The Hour column remains 乙丑 in both charts. The variation is in the Year and Month columns, not in the Day Pillar or the Hour column.
Variation Four: Same Day Pillar, Different Surrounding Hidden Stems
In the first teaching chart, the hidden stems across the four branches are 癸 in the Year branch, 乙 in the Month branch, 甲, 丙 and 戊 in the Day branch, and 己, 癸 and 辛 in the Hour branch. Their Ten Gods labels relative to the Jia Wood Day Master are Direct Resource, Rob Wealth, Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer. In the second teaching chart, the hidden stems across the four branches are 丁 and 己 in the Year branch, 甲, 丙 and 戊 in the Month branch, 甲, 丙 and 戊 in the Day branch, and 己, 癸 and 辛 in the Hour branch. Their Ten Gods labels relative to the Jia Wood Day Master are Hurting Officer, Direct Wealth, Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth, Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
The concrete check is this: list every hidden stem in every branch, in order, and label each one relative to the Day Master. Then compare the two lists. The Day Pillar itself is 甲寅 in both charts. The Day Branch hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊 in both charts. The variation is in the surrounding hidden stems, not in the Day Pillar. This is the clearest way to see that the Day Pillar is a fixed reference point while the rest of the chart provides context.
Across all four variations, the same rule applies. The Day Master is the reference point for the Ten Gods. The Day Branch is a distinct character with hidden stems. The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. Weights and raw element counts are not an overall strong or weak verdict. Traditional associations are symbolic, not forecasts. The observation sequence stays the same even when the surrounding columns change.
五 Worked chart examples
These are calendar-engine-screened teaching examples, not client charts or claims about life events. Tables are produced from the calculator’s data rules.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 甲 | 丁 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 子 | 卯 | 寅 | 丑 |
| Ten God | Friend | Hurting Officer | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 癸 Direct Resource (1) | 乙 Rob Wealth (1) | 甲 Friend (1) 丙 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master): Friend 2.0; Rob Wealth 2.0; Eating God 0.5; Hurting Officer 1.0; Indirect Wealth 0.3; Direct Wealth 1.0; Direct Officer 0.3; Direct Resource 1.5.
In the first teaching chart, the pillars are 甲子, 丁卯, 甲寅 and 乙丑. The focused column is the Day column, 甲寅. Its visible information is the Heavenly Stem 甲 and the Earthly Branch 寅. Its hidden information is the hidden stems inside 寅: 甲, 丙 and 戊 in list order. Relative to the Jia Wood Day Master, those hidden stems are Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth.
The Year column is 甲子. Its visible stem is 甲 and its visible branch is 子. Its hidden stem is 癸, labeled Direct Resource relative to the Day Master. The Month column is 丁卯. Its visible stem is 丁 and its visible branch is 卯. Its hidden stem is 乙, labeled Rob Wealth. The Hour column is 乙丑. Its visible stem is 乙 and its visible branch is 丑. Its hidden stems are 己, 癸 and 辛, labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
When you read the Day Pillar, you start with the Day Master 甲, then read the Day Branch 寅. You list its hidden stems in order: 甲, 丙, 戊. You label them relative to the Day Master: Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth. You do not recalculate totals or cite invented numbers. You describe what is shown. The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. Those weights are not an overall strong or weak verdict; they are a display convention.
The Day Pillar is not the same as the Year, Month or Hour column. The Year column gives the wider calendar and social frame. The Month column gives the seasonal branch and context. The Day column gives the Day Master and Day Branch. The Hour column is birth-time-dependent. Each column has its own role. The Day Pillar is the third column, and its focus is the Day Master and Day Branch.
Traditional associations here are symbolic. Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth are Ten Gods labels, not predictions. They describe structural relationships between the hidden stems and the Day Master. They are not diagnoses, promises, relationship claims, career claims or personality verdicts. The reading stays at the level of observation.
Year Column
The Year column is 甲子, with visible stem 甲 and visible branch 子. Its hidden stem is 癸, labeled Direct Resource.
Month Column
The Month column is 丁卯, with visible stem 丁 and visible branch 卯. Its hidden stem is 乙, labeled Rob Wealth.
Day Column
The Day column is 甲寅, the focused pillar. Its hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth.
Hour Column
The Hour column is 乙丑, with visible stem 乙 and visible branch 丑. Its hidden stems are 己, 癸 and 辛, labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 庚 | 戊 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 午 | 寅 | 寅 | 丑 |
| Ten God | Seven Killings | Indirect Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
甲 Friend (1) 丙 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
甲 Friend (1) 丙 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master): Friend 2.0; Rob Wealth 1.0; Eating God 1.0; Hurting Officer 1.0; Indirect Wealth 1.6; Direct Wealth 1.5; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.3; Direct Resource 0.5.
In the second teaching chart, the pillars are 庚午, 戊寅, 甲寅 and 乙丑. The focused column is again the Day column, 甲寅. The visible information is the Heavenly Stem 甲 and the Earthly Branch 寅. The hidden information is the hidden stems inside 寅: 甲, 丙 and 戊 in list order. Relative to the Jia Wood Day Master, those hidden stems are Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Day Pillar itself is the same as in the first teaching chart. What changes is the surrounding context.
The Year column is 庚午. Its visible stem is 庚 and its visible branch is 午. Its hidden stems are 丁 and 己, labeled Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth relative to the Day Master. The Month column is 戊寅. Its visible stem is 戊 and its visible branch is 寅. Its hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊, labeled Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. The Hour column is 乙丑. Its visible stem is 乙 and its visible branch is 丑. Its hidden stems are 己, 癸 and 辛, labeled Direct Wealth, Direct Resource and Direct Officer.
When you read the Day Pillar in this chart, you follow the same sequence. Start with the Day Master 甲. Read the Day Branch 寅. List its hidden stems in order: 甲, 丙, 戊. Label them relative to the Day Master: Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth. Then compare with the other columns. Notice that the Month branch 寅 has the same hidden stems as the Day branch 寅. That is an observation, not a verdict. The Month column is still the seasonal branch and context. The Day column is still the Day Master and Day Branch.
The engine uses hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5, 0.3 in list order only for its displayed convention. Weights and raw element counts are not an overall strong or weak verdict. In this chart, the weights shown for the Ten Gods are Friend 2, Rob Wealth 1, Eating God 1, Hurting Officer 1, Indirect Wealth 1.6, Direct Wealth 1.5, Seven Killings 1, Direct Officer 0.3, Indirect Resource 0 and Direct Resource 0.5. These are displayed conventions, not a final judgment. They do not turn the Day Pillar into a prediction.
Traditional associations remain symbolic. The Day Master is a reference point. The Day Branch is a distinct character with hidden stems. The Ten Gods labels describe structural relationships. They are not forecasts, diagnoses, promises, relationship claims, career claims or personality verdicts. If you want to see your own Four Pillars and observe the Day Pillar in context, you can enter your birth date, time and place at https://bazi-calculator.org/. Year and Month follow China time; Day and Hour use true solar time. If the time is unknown, no hour column should be invented. The Day Pillar can still be read, and the observation sequence remains the same.
六 Base rate in the combination space
Every one of the 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations contains the Day column by definition. This is a structural fact of the four-column layout, not a population statistic.
The combination space uses 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. It does not say what percentage of people have a trait, event, occupation or outcome. Reading the column well depends on its exact stem, branch, hidden stems, calendar boundary and the rest of the chart.
