Direct Wealth vs Indirect Wealth in Bazi: Same Element, Different Polarity

一 What is the difference?

What Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth Mean

Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth are the two Ten Gods formed by the element your Day Master controls. For Jia Yang Wood, that element is Earth: Ji Yin Earth is Direct Wealth, Wu Yang Earth is Indirect Wealth. Both share one relationship to the Day Master, differing only in polarity. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.

Polarity is the whole contrast. Jia is yang; Ji is yin, so the pair is opposite and called direct. Wu is also yang, so the pair is same-polarity and called indirect. A simple analogy: direct wealth resembles a labeled account with a known balance; indirect wealth resembles an open market stall where goods and prices shift daily.

Traditionally, Direct Wealth is associated with managing defined resources, and Indirect Wealth with responding to changing opportunities. These are interpretive metaphors, not salary-versus-investment categories, forecasts, or advice. Neither label is inherently better; each describes a different mode of engagement.

Read the actual hidden stems before citing numbers. In the first example, Ji appears once visibly in the hour, while Wu appears three times as hidden stems at 0.3 each. In the second, Wu is visible in the month plus two hidden positions, and Ji sits hidden in year and hour. Quantities alone do not establish strong or weak, and absence is not a personal deficit.

Where to Read the Chart

Open https://bazi-calculator.org/, enter birth date, time, and place; if the hour is unknown, choose “I don’t know the hour.” Read the Four Pillars Day stem first: it is the Day Master, the reference point for every label. Then read the labels for the non-day visible stems and the hidden stems inside each branch.

Each pillar has a top stem, a bottom branch, and hidden characters within that branch. The top stem is visible; the branch is the season or ground; hidden stems are the branch’s internal components. For Jia Yang Wood, Ji Yin Earth is Direct Wealth and Wu Yang Earth is Indirect Wealth. Traditional associations describe managing defined resources versus responding to changing opportunities; these are metaphors, not forecasts or categories.

The same other stem can receive a different label under a different Day Master because labels are relational: they compare that stem’s element and polarity to the Day Master. Change the Day Master, and the relationship changes.

Use the Bazi Calculator to read these layers directly.

三 How to read the pair

How to Compare Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth

Begin with the element relationship, then apply polarity. For Jia Yang Wood, the Day Master controls Earth, so Earth is the Wealth family. Within that family, Ji Yin Earth is Direct Wealth because its polarity opposes Jia; Wu Yang Earth is Indirect Wealth because its polarity matches Jia. The table below generalizes this: for each Day Master, the first listed stem is Direct Wealth and the second is Indirect Wealth. Read that row before comparing any chart, because the same element pair changes label when the Day Master changes.

Next, inspect root visibility. A visible stem sits on the Four Pillars surface; a hidden stem sits inside a branch. In the first example, Jia on 甲申 has Direct Wealth only as visible Ji in the hour, while Indirect Wealth appears solely as hidden Wu in month, day, and hour. In the second, Jia on 甲寅 shows visible Wu in the month but no visible Ji; Direct Wealth hides in year and hour Ji. Visibility tells you whether the stem is exposed; checking the branches separately establishes whether it has a hidden root.

Then count in two ways. The visible count tallies only surface stems, excluding the visible Day Master itself. The weighted count adds hidden stems by list position: 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 per hidden list position, while every other visible stem is 1.0. A hidden Jia contributes Friend, but the visible day stem Jia is never counted as Friend. In example one, Direct Wealth weighs 1 from visible Ji; Indirect Wealth weighs 0.9 from three hidden Wu at 0.3 each. In example two, Indirect Wealth weighs 1.6 and Direct Wealth 1.5.

These quantities are not strength. A higher weighted total does not make a Day Master strong or weak, and a low count is not a personal deficit. Season is judged from the month branch, not inferred from counts. Traditional associations—Direct Wealth with defined resources, Indirect Wealth with changing opportunities—are interpretive metaphors, not income, risk, career, marriage, or personality findings. 四 When the comparison changes

Visible Versus Hidden: Two Different Ledgers

A Bazi Calculator that exposes both layers lets you audit the same chart twice. The visible ledger counts only the four stems printed in the pillars; the hidden ledger counts the hidden stems stored inside each branch. For Jia Yang Wood, the wealth element is Earth: Ji Yin Earth is Direct Wealth and Wu Yang Earth is Indirect Wealth. In the chart 辛酉 癸巳 甲申 己巳, the visible ledger shows Direct Wealth 1 and Indirect Wealth 0, because only the hour stem 己 is exposed. The hidden ledger adds three 戊 entries at 0.3 each, giving Indirect Wealth 0.9. Neither figure is a verdict; they are two inventories of the same chart. The observable check is simple: open the hidden-stem list and confirm which Earth stems actually appear before citing any number. A visible count answers what is on the surface; a hidden count answers what is stored beneath it, and the two rarely agree.

One Versus Both: Presence Is Not Balance

Finding only Direct Wealth among the visible stems does not mean Indirect Wealth is absent from the hidden stems, and finding both labels does not establish a formal structure. In 庚午 戊寅 甲寅 乙丑, the visible ledger shows Indirect Wealth 1 from the month stem 戊 and Direct Wealth 0. The hidden ledger adds 己 at 0.5 in the year branch and 1 in the hour branch, so Direct Wealth reaches 1.5 while Indirect Wealth rises to 1.6 through two 戊 entries at 0.3. Both labels are now present. Traditional interpretation associates Direct Wealth with managing defined resources and Indirect Wealth with responding to changing opportunities; these are metaphors, not income categories or forecasts. The bounded check is to read the component list, not to infer a chart type from the mere co-occurrence of two labels. Presence tells you what exists; it does not tell you what dominates.

Numerical Weighting Versus Actual Strength

Weights of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 are per hidden list position, and every other visible stem counts 1.0. They are accounting conventions, not measures of inherent strength. A 0.3 hidden 戊 is not a weak Earth in any physical sense; it is simply one entry in a list. The visible day stem is the Day Master and is never counted as Friend, so Jia in the day pillar contributes nothing to the Friend total. A hidden Jia, by contrast, does contribute Friend. This is why a chart can show a high weighted total for a category while the visible pillars show almost nothing of it. Traditional reading treats these totals as relative emphasis, not as strong or weak verdicts. Check the components before treating any total as meaningful, and remember that a larger number is not a stronger element.

Positions And The Unknown Hour

Position changes what a stem can be read against. A visible 己 in the hour pillar sits in a different slot from a hidden 己 in the year branch, even when both are Direct Wealth. In 辛酉 癸巳 甲申 己巳, the hour 己 is visible and the month and day branches carry hidden 戊; in 庚午 戊寅 甲寅 乙丑, the month 戊 is visible while 己 hides in the year and hour. If the hour is unknown, the hour pillar and its hidden stems cannot be counted at all, so both ledgers shrink. The honest check is to mark the missing slot, recompute nothing by guesswork, and read the remaining positions as a partial view. Traditional associations for position are interpretive, not rules, and an absent hour is missing data rather than a personal deficit. Compare the two ledgers side by side, note where they diverge, and treat each divergence as a question to inspect rather than a conclusion to accept.

五 Worked chart examples

These teaching charts were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or assert life events. Visible counts and hidden-stem weighted totals agree on the numerical emphasis in each example; neither is an overall strength verdict.

Chart A: Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth Compared

Chart A uses Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, shown in the day pillar 甲申. For Jia Wood, the Wealth family is Earth: Ji Yin Earth is Direct Wealth, while Wu Yang Earth is Indirect Wealth. The comparison below traces every visible and hidden occurrence in the supplied Four Pillars 辛酉, 癸巳, 甲申, 己巳.

Direct Wealth (己): one visible occurrence in the hour stem 己, weight 1.0. No hidden Ji appears in any branch. Visible count: 1; weighted count: 1.0.

Indirect Wealth (戊): no visible Wu stem. Hidden Wu appears three times: month branch 巳, day branch 申, and hour branch 巳, each at weight 0.3. Visible count: 0; weighted count: 0.9.

Contrasting the pair: Direct Wealth leads on visible count, 1 to 0, and on weighted count, 1.0 to 0.9. That is a mild numerical emphasis only. It does not establish overall strength, because these weights are per hidden-list position and visible stems, not measures of inherent force. The Day Master 甲 is not counted as Friend; no hidden Jia appears here, so Friend remains 0.

Three exact relationships follow from the components. First, the hour stem 己 is the sole visible Wealth stem, and it sits above hour branch 巳, which hides Wu Earth; the same pillar therefore contains a visible Ji above a branch with hidden Wu. Second, the month branch 巳 also hides Wu Earth, giving Indirect Wealth a second 0.3 entry. Third, the day branch 申 hides Wu Earth at 0.3 alongside Geng Metal; the day stem 甲 is the Day Master and is excluded from Friend counting. Traditionally, Direct Wealth is associated with managing defined resources and Indirect Wealth with responding to changing opportunities; these are interpretive metaphors, not forecasts or categories of income, risk, or competence.

Visible non-day stems — Direct Wealth: 0; Indirect Wealth: 1.

Chart B: Visible Wealth, Hidden Peers

Chart B (庚午, 戊寅, 甲寅, 乙丑) has Jia Yang Wood as its Day Master. Its wealth picture is unusually explicit: Wu Yang Earth, the Indirect Wealth stem, sits visibly in the month position, and Ji Yin Earth, Direct Wealth, appears twice in hidden form — a 0.5 in the year branch and a 1.0 in the hour branch. The weighted totals are Indirect Wealth 1.6 and Direct Wealth 1.5, so the two are nearly balanced, with the visible month stem giving Indirect Wealth its edge. The month and day branches each carry hidden Wu at 0.3, adding 0.6 to the visible Wu contribution of 1.0.

What makes Chart B distinctive is where the peer support sits. Two hidden Jia stems — month and day branches — contribute Friend at 1.0 each, while a visible Yi in the hour gives Rob Wealth 1.0. The Day Master itself is not counted as Friend. So the same pillar that holds the Day Master also holds a hidden peer, and the hour pillar pairs a visible Rob Wealth with a hidden Direct Wealth.

Contrast with Chart A

Chart A (辛酉, 癸巳, 甲申, 己巳) reverses the emphasis. There, Direct Wealth is visible in the hour (Ji, 1.0), while Indirect Wealth exists only as three hidden Wu stems at 0.3 each, totaling 0.9. Chart B flips this: Indirect Wealth becomes visible in the month, and Direct Wealth retreats into hidden positions. The visible/weighted reversal follows directly from stem placement, not from any change in the Day Master.

Chart A also has no Friend or Rob Wealth components at all, whereas Chart B carries 2.0 Friend and 1.0 Rob Wealth. That difference in peer presence, combined with the shift of Wu from hidden to visible, is what changes the wealth profile between the two charts.

六 How often do the two labels coexist?

Within the 51,840 combinations whose Day Master is Jia 甲, presence means at least one matching visible non-day stem or hidden stem. This conditional subset contains 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 6 Jia day pillars × 12 hour slots, with valid derived stems. It is not the full 518,400-combination space for all Day Masters.

Configuration Combinations Proportion
Neither 192 0.3704%
Direct Wealth only 2,874 5.5440%
Indirect Wealth only 13,288 25.6327%
Both 35,486 68.4529%

These are equal-weight combination-space proportions, not percentages of people, income outcomes, personality types or birth-registry frequencies. A hidden occurrence counts as presence even when no matching stem is visible above the branches. Only the visible Day Master is excluded. Repeated occurrences do not increase the number of charts counted.
