一 What it is
What This Article Covers
The five elements in Bazi are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Think of them as five ingredients in a kitchen: each one has its own flavour, yet a dish depends on how much of each you actually use, not on whether an ingredient merely appears on the shelf. This article explains how a Bazi calculator counts those five elements from a birth chart and reports the totals. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
The scope is deliberately narrow. It covers the tally itself: every visible stem is counted as 1.0, and each branch hidden stem is counted by this calculator’s list-order convention of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.3. The visible Day Master is included in the five-element totals, even though it is excluded from the article’s weighted Ten-God totals. Traditional associations between elements are described as traditional and bounded, not as verified outcomes.
This is not a strength verdict. Raw totals are not the same as a strong or weak chart; the engine separately applies seasonal and support/drain rules. It is also not a Ten Gods reading, a luck-cycle forecast or a personality profile. Calendar input matters: Year and Month use China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time. Near a solar-term or local-day boundary, exact input changes the count, and an unknown birth time means no invented Hour Pillar.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read the Five Elements in Your Result
Open the live Four Pillars result and look at the four columns. Each column has a stem row on top and a branch row below. The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — appear first as the visible characters in those two rows. Below each branch, the calculator also lists its hidden stems, the secondary characters stored inside that branch.
The Day Master is the stem in the day column. It is your reference point, and it still counts as one visible stem in the five-element totals. In the separate Ten-God section, however, the Day Master is excluded from the weighted totals, so the two panels answer different questions.
The element totals panel adds every visible stem as 1.0 and each hidden stem by this calculator’s list-order convention: 1.0, 0.5, then 0.3. Treat those numbers as a tally, not a verdict. The engine applies seasonal and support/drain rules separately before judging strength, so a larger raw total does not automatically mean a stronger element.
Timing matters. Year and Month use China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time. Near a solar-term or local-day boundary, exact input can change a pillar. If the hour is unknown, no Hour Pillar is invented, and the hour stem, hour branch, its hidden stems and their contributions are simply absent.

三 How to read it
How to Read the Five-Element Tally Step by Step
Start with verified birth data. The year and month pillars follow China time, while the day and hour pillars use true solar time. Near a solar-term or local-day boundary, even a few minutes can change a pillar, so exact input matters. If the birth time is unknown, no Hour Pillar is invented, and the reading stays incomplete by design. The method is easier to compare with Hidden Stems and Their Weights: what is inside each earthly branch.
Next, list the four pillars and mark the visible Day Master, the day stem. Then open the code-generated lookup table. For each element, the table shows what it produces and what controls it. Read the table as a map of relationships, not as a verdict about strength.
Now count what is visible. Every visible stem adds 1.0. Each branch hidden stem adds its list weight: 1.0, 0.5 or 0.3, following this calculator’s list-order convention. The visible Day Master is included in five-element totals, but it is excluded only from the article’s weighted Ten Gods totals. Raw totals are not the strength verdict; the engine separately applies seasonal and support/drain rules.
Use the two worked examples to practice. In the first chart, the element totals are Wood 4, Fire 1.5, Earth 2.6, Metal 0.8 and Water 1.5. In the second, they are Wood 3, Fire 0.3, Earth 2.3, Metal 1.8 and Water 3. Compare the columns, hidden stems and hidden gods before comparing totals.
What can you observe? You can observe which elements appear, where they sit, which hidden stems carry weight, and how the lookup table links production and control. You can also observe that the same element may appear as a stem, a branch or a hidden stem.
What can you not conclude? You cannot conclude personality, career, relationships, health or future events from these totals alone. You cannot treat a larger raw count as proof of strength, and you cannot add classical rules, extra cycles or predictions that the calculator does not supply. Traditional associations, where mentioned, are traditional and bounded, not fixed outcomes.
Repeat the procedure in the same order each time: verify time, list pillars, mark the Day Master, consult the lookup table, count visible and hidden contributions, then separate observation from interpretation. This keeps the reading consistent and honest about its limits.
| Element | Produces | Controlled by |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Fire | Metal |
| Fire | Earth | Water |
| Earth | Metal | Wood |
| Metal | Water | Fire |
| Water | Wood | Earth |
四 When the reading changes
When the Month Branch Hides the Element You Are Looking For
A common first check is whether an element appears only inside a branch rather than as a visible stem. Take the month branch, open its hidden stems, and note each one’s list weight: 1.0 for the first listed, 0.5 for the second, and 0.3 for the third. This is the calculator’s list-order convention, not a universal rule. If, for example, Metal shows up only as the second hidden stem of the month branch, its tally contribution is 0.5. That is a real entry in the five-element totals, but it is modest. The limited significance is this: hidden presence counts, yet a small weighted figure should not be read as the same as a visible, full-weight stem. Use the tally to see what is present, then let the engine’s seasonal and support/drain rules speak to strength. This point connects directly with How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
When the Same Element Appears in Several Visible Stems
Repeated visible information is easy to spot and easy to overread. Check the four stems — year, month, day, and hour — and count each visible stem as 1.0. If Wood appears as the year stem, the day stem, and the hour stem, that is three visible entries before any branch is opened. The visible Day Master is included in these element totals, even though it is excluded from the article’s weighted Ten-God totals. The limited significance is that repetition raises the raw total, but raw totals are not the strength verdict. A chart can show a high count for one element and still be assessed differently once season and support/drain relationships are applied.
When an Element Is Absent from the Visible Chart
An absent element is not automatically a problem, and it is not automatically a hidden strength. Check all four stems and all four branches, including hidden stems, before concluding that an element is missing. If Fire has no visible stem and no hidden stem anywhere, its tally is zero. That is an observable condition, not a prediction. The limited significance is that zero means the element is not represented in the counting method used here. It does not mean the chart lacks balance, nor does it override the engine’s separate seasonal and support/drain analysis. Treat absence as one data point among several.
When the Hour Is Unknown
An unknown birth time changes what can be checked. The hour pillar cannot be invented, so there is no hour stem and no hour branch to count. Year and month use China time, while day and hour use true solar time; near a solar-term or local-day boundary, exact input matters. If the hour is unknown, the visible Day Master still counts in five-element totals, and the three known pillars can still be tallied. The limited significance is that the totals are incomplete by one pillar, and any Ten-God weighted totals will also lack the hour’s contributions. A responsible reading states that limitation rather than filling the gap with guesswork.
五 Worked chart examples
These teaching charts were screened by the site’s current calendar engine. They are not people or client stories. Tables and totals are generated from the engine; the prose only explains what is shown.

Element totals — Wood 4.0; Fire 1.5; Earth 2.6; Metal 0.8; Water 1.5.
Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 2.0; Rob Wealth 1.0; Eating God 1.5; Indirect Wealth 0.6; Direct Wealth 2.0; Seven Killings 0.5; Direct Officer 0.3; Direct Resource 1.5.
Chart A: Tracing the Five-Element Totals
Chart A has four pillars: 甲子 (year), 己巳 (month), 甲寅 (day) and 乙丑 (hour). The visible stems are 甲, 己, 甲 and 乙. The branches are 子, 巳, 寅 and 丑. Each branch also contains hidden stems, and this calculator weights them by list order: 1.0 for the first hidden stem, 0.5 for the second and 0.3 for the third.
Start with Wood. The year stem 甲 adds 1.0, the day stem 甲 adds 1.0, and the hour stem 乙 adds 1.0. The day branch 寅 hides 甲 first, adding 1.0. That gives 4.0 Wood. The visible Day Master is included here, even though it is excluded from the article’s weighted Ten Gods totals.
Fire comes from the month branch 巳, whose first hidden stem is 丙, worth 1.0, and the day branch 寅, whose second hidden stem is 丙, worth 0.5. Fire totals 1.5.
Earth appears in several cells. The month stem 己 adds 1.0. The month branch 巳 hides 戊 third, worth 0.3. The day branch 寅 hides 戊 third, worth 0.3. The hour branch 丑 hides 己 first, worth 1.0. Earth totals 2.6.
Metal is lighter. The month branch 巳 hides 庚 second, worth 0.5, and the hour branch 丑 hides 辛 third, worth 0.3. Metal totals 0.8.
Water comes from the year branch 子, whose hidden stem 癸 is worth 1.0, and the hour branch 丑, whose second hidden stem 癸 is worth 0.5. Water totals 1.5.
These raw totals describe counted cells only. They are not a strength verdict; the engine separately applies seasonal and support-or-drain rules.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 甲 | 壬 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 子 | 申 | 戌 | 丑 |
| Ten God | Friend | Indirect Resource | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 癸 Direct Resource (1) | 庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Element totals — Wood 3.0; Fire 0.3; Earth 2.3; Metal 1.8; Water 3.0.
Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 1.0; Hurting Officer 0.3; Indirect Wealth 1.3; Direct Wealth 1.0; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.8; Indirect Resource 1.5; Direct Resource 1.5.
Chart B: Tracing the Cells and Totals
Chart B has the pillars 甲子 (year), 壬申 (month), 甲戌 (day) and 乙丑 (hour). Its Day Master is the day stem 甲, Wood. The site tally adds every visible stem as 1.0 and each branch hidden stem by list weight 1.0, 0.5 or 0.3. The visible Day Master is included in element totals, though it is excluded from the article’s weighted Ten-God totals.
Wood reaches 3.0: the year stem 甲, day stem 甲 and hour stem 乙 each count 1.0. Water also reaches 3.0: the month stem 壬 counts 1.0, while 子 hides 癸 (1.0), 申 hides 壬 (0.5) and 丑 hides 癸 (0.5). Earth totals 2.3: 申 hides 戊 (0.3), 戌 hides 戊 (1.0) and 丑 hides 己 (1.0). Metal totals 1.8: 申 hides 庚 (1.0), 戌 hides 辛 (0.5) and 丑 hides 辛 (0.3). Fire is lowest at 0.3, from 戌 hiding 丁 (0.3).
The contrast is also visible by source: Water appears both openly and underground, whereas Fire appears only once as a residual hidden stem.
Chart A, by contrast, has 4.0 Wood, 1.5 Fire, 2.6 Earth, 0.8 Metal and 1.5 Water. Chart B therefore trades some Wood and Earth for more Water and Metal. These raw totals are not the strength verdict; the engine separately applies seasonal and support/drain rules.
Try this: pick one element, locate every visible stem and hidden stem that supplies it, then add the listed weights. Repeat the same trace for Chart A and compare where the totals diverge.
六 Base-rate boundary
The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. The subject of this article is a structural layer of the chart rather than one narrowly defined configuration, so attaching a single occurrence percentage would be misleading.
Whenever a later article gives a percentage, read it as an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or birth records. Define the exact condition first, then count it.
