一 What it is
What Geng Xu Means
A Geng Xu day pillar is a 庚 Yang Metal Day Master sitting on a 戌 Yang Earth branch, where the branch supplies Earth Resource and also hides a small Metal root. Picture a steel blade resting in a clay scabbard: the clay is not the blade, but the scabbard still holds a thin metal fitting that keeps the blade steady.
What distinguishes this pillar is the split between visible and hidden support. 戌 hides 戊 Indirect Resource at weight 1, 辛 Rob Wealth at .5, and 丁 Direct Officer at .3. The 戊 Earth is Resource, not a Metal root. The hidden 辛 is Yin Metal, so it is a genuine same-element Metal root for 庚 even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth. A root comes from hidden Metal, not from the Resource label and not from visible peers.
庚 at 戌 is Decline, the same phase reference for the Day Master and the pillar stem at the day position. Decline is a phase label, not a statement about health, lifespan, or personality. It also cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. 戌 is traditionally a Fire storage branch, not a Metal storage branch, so its main element should not be confused with every hidden stem inside it.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Geng Xu in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the Day branch. In Geng Xu, the top is 庚 Geng and the bottom is 戌 Xu. Small characters beside Xu are its hidden stems: 戊 Wu, 辛 Xin, and 丁 Ding. The grid shows hidden stems, not hidden Ten God labels, and it has no dedicated growth-phase row.
Read the Day Master as the stem only; read the day pillar as both stem and branch together. To check the phase, use the article tables or the full overview, not a main-grid row. Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase or a strength verdict.
If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use calculate your chart with the accurate birthplace and time rather than inventing a universal rollover rule.
When comparing two charts, identify which pillars actually change. In the examples, A and B share the same Geng Xu day pillar and the same 辛巳 hour, so the day-level reading stays fixed while year and month placements shift.
三 How to read it
How to Read Geng Xu Step by Step
First, fix the layer of the cycle index. Geng Xu is number 47 in the sixty-pillar sequence. That number tells you where the pillar sits in the cycle; it does not by itself describe strength, character, or outcome. Next, identify the stem element and polarity: Geng is yang Metal. Then identify the branch and its hidden stems with their Ten Gods and fixed weights. For Geng Xu, the hidden stems are Wu Indirect Resource at 1, Xin Rob Wealth at .5, and Ding Direct Officer at .3. These weights are fixed teaching weights, not seasonal strength scores. The branch itself is Xu, traditionally a Fire storage branch, not a Metal storage branch; its main element is Earth, but its hidden stems are not all Earth. Reading a branch correctly means separating its main element from every hidden stem inside it, and the Xu Dog Earthly Branch reference explains that distinction.
Next, read the phase. For a Geng Day Master, phase direction is forward. At the day branch Xu, Geng is in Decline (衰, Shuai). The day pillar's Day Master phase and own-pillar-stem phase are identical references here, both Decline. Decline is a phase label, not a statement about health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationships. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. So do not treat Decline as a reason the root disappears. The phase describes the Day Master's position relative to that branch, while the hidden stems describe what the branch actually stores.
Then, separate root from Resource. Wu is Earth Resource, and Earth is not a Metal root. Xin is hidden Metal, so it is a root for Geng even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. If another pillar shows a visible Geng or Xin stem, that is a stem, not a hidden root inside Xu. Do not confuse Xu's main element, Earth, with every hidden stem inside it. The Rob Wealth label on Xin describes its Ten God relationship to Geng, not its element; the element is still Metal, so it can root the Day Master.
Finally, read the complete chart. The day pillar is one position among four. Compare charts by identifying which pillars actually change. In example A, the year is Ren Shen, month Xin Hai, day Geng Xu, hour Xin Si. In example B, the year is Ren Wu, month Bing Wu, day Geng Xu, hour Xin Si. The day pillar is the same, but the year and month pillars differ. That changes the surrounding hidden stems and phases, so the reading of the whole chart changes even though the Day Master and day branch do not. Check those changed year and month placements against the examples rather than attributing every difference to Xu.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Geng | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 戊 | Indirect Resource | 1 |
| 辛 | Rob Wealth | 0.5 |
| 丁 | Direct Officer | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Geng phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 庚戌 | 47 | 衰 Decline |
四 When the reading changes
Season and Context: Why the Same Day Pillar Reads Differently in A and B
In chart A, the month pillar is 辛亥: Xin Rob Wealth sits above Hai, whose hidden stems are Ren Eating God and Jia Indirect Wealth. The year 壬申 and hour 辛巳 add visible Metal and Water, so the chart's Metal count is high. The day branch 戌 still hides Wu Indirect Resource, Xin Rob Wealth, and Ding Direct Officer, but the surrounding pillars change what that hidden Xin can do. In chart B, the month pillar is 丙午 and the year is 壬午. Fire is much heavier, and the only visible Metal is the hour stem 辛 plus the day stem 庚. The day branch 戌 is identical in both charts, and B has fewer Metal placements under the fixed tally; this alone does not establish the relative strength of its hidden Xin. This is a season-and-context comparison, not a personality or life-outcome prediction.
Root Versus Resource: Hidden Xin Is Metal, Hidden Wu Is Earth
For a 庚 Day Master, a root must be hidden Metal: Geng or Xin inside a branch. Xu is traditionally a Fire storage branch, not a Metal storage branch, so its main element Earth does not root Geng. The hidden Wu Indirect Resource is Earth, and Earth produces Metal as Resource; it supports Geng but is not a root. The hidden Xin Rob Wealth is Metal, so it is a same-element root even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth rather than Friend. In chart A, the year branch 申 hides Geng Friend at weight 1, giving a clear Metal root; the hour branch 巳 hides Geng Friend at 0.5. In chart B, 申 is absent, leaving hidden Xin in Xu and hidden Geng in Si as the two branch locations containing Metal. A phase label such as Decline cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can.
Relationship Reading Limits: What the Day Branch Can and Cannot Show
The day branch 戌 hides Ding Direct Officer, which is the spouse palace's hidden Officer for a 庚 Day Master. In chart A, Ding is present but surrounded by strong Metal and Water, and the visible hour stem is Xin Rob Wealth. In chart B, Ding appears in the day branch and also as the main hidden stem of both 午 branches, while the month stem is Bing Seven Killings. These are placement differences, not relationship forecasts. A reading can note that the spouse palace contains Direct Officer and that Rob Wealth is also hidden there, but it cannot determine a partner's character, fidelity, or timing of marriage from these facts alone. The useful contrast is structural: A has more visible Metal peers and a 申 root; B has more Fire Officer pressure and no 申 root. Relationship conclusions require the full chart and real context, not a single day pillar.
Career and Reflection Limits: Using the Pillar Without Overreading It
Geng Xu as a day pillar shows Yang Metal above and hidden Earth Resource, Metal peer and Fire Officer below. In career reflection, the hidden Xin Rob Wealth can be read as a Metal root that also carries a peer or competitor flavor, while Ding Direct Officer suggests structure or rules inside the day branch. In chart A, the visible 辛 hour stem and 申 year branch make Metal peers more prominent, so the reflection may center on collaboration versus competition. In chart B, the 丙午 month and 壬午 year bring Fire Officer and Eating God forward, so the same hidden Xin root sits in a hotter, more pressured context. These are reading limits, not career predictions. To place the day pillar correctly, learn how to use the 12 growth phases alongside the hidden stems, and treat Decline as a phase label, not a verdict on health, lifespan, or biological age.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Geng Metal Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 辛 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 申 | 亥 | 戌 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Rob Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Friend (1) 壬 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
壬 Eating God (1) 甲 Indirect Wealth (0.5) |
戊 Indirect Resource (1) 辛 Rob Wealth (0.5) 丁 Direct Officer (0.3) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 临官 Adulthood | 病 Sickness | 衰 Decline | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 沐浴 Bath | 衰 Decline | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.5, Fire 1.3, Earth 1.6, Metal 5, Water 2.5.
Chart A places 庚 Geng in the day position on 戌 Xu, with the year pillar 壬申, month pillar 辛亥, and hour pillar 辛巳. The Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase at the day position are both 衰 Decline, and by definition these two references are identical there. Decline is a phase label only — not health, lifespan, biological age, or a personality reading.
Xu is traditionally a Fire storage branch, and its hidden stems are 戊 Wu Indirect Resource at weight 1, 辛 Xin Rob Wealth at .5, and 丁 Ding Direct Officer at .3. The teaching point is that the branch's main element is not the same as every hidden stem inside it: Xu's surface is Earth, yet it stores Earth, Metal, and Fire. Wu is Resource — Earth producing Metal — so it supports Geng but cannot root it. Xin is same-element Metal, so it is a genuine Metal root for Geng despite the Rob Wealth label; the label describes the relationship to the Day Master, not the substance of the stem. Ding is Fire, the element that controls Metal, at the smallest weight.
Two useful contrasts sit in the same chart. First, the year branch 申 Shen hides 庚 Geng Friend at weight 1, and the hour branch 巳 Si also hides 庚 Geng Friend at .5 — those hidden Geng characters are Metal roots as well, while the visible month and hour stems 辛 Xin are not themselves hidden roots. Second, the fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are teaching proportions, not seasonal strength scores, and no automatic transformation or new interaction rule follows from them.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 戌 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Seven Killings | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Direct Officer (1) 己 Direct Resource (0.5) |
丁 Direct Officer (1) 己 Direct Resource (0.5) |
戊 Indirect Resource (1) 辛 Rob Wealth (0.5) 丁 Direct Officer (0.3) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 沐浴 Bath | 沐浴 Bath | 衰 Decline | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 衰 Decline | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0, Fire 4.3, Earth 2.3, Metal 3, Water 1.
Chart B places the same 庚戌 Day pillar inside a Fire-heavy frame: 壬午 year, 丙午 month, 庚戌 day, 辛巳 hour. The Day Master is still 庚 (Geng), and the Day branch is still 戌 (Xu), so the internal facts do not move. Xu hides 戊 (Wu, Indirect Resource) at weight 1, 辛 (Xin, Rob Wealth) at weight .5, and 丁 (Ding, Direct Officer) at weight .3. Xu remains a traditional Fire storage branch, not a Metal storage branch, so its main element is Earth, which is Resource for Geng.
For Geng, roots come from hidden Metal, not from Earth. The hidden 辛 is same-element Yin Metal, so it is a Metal root even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth. The hidden 戊 is Resource and does not root Geng. The visible 辛 in the hour stem is a peer stem, not itself a hidden root. Geng at Xu reads 衰 (Decline) at the Day position; the Day Master phase and own-pillar-stem phase are identical references there. Decline is a phase label, not a claim about health, lifespan, biological age, personality, career, or relationships, and a phase cannot create a root.
Compared with chart A (壬申 year, 辛亥 month, 庚戌 day, 辛巳 hour), chart B changes only the year and month pillars: 壬申 becomes 壬午, and 辛亥 becomes 丙午. The Day pillar 庚戌 and hour 辛巳 are unchanged. So B's added Fire sits in the surrounding pillars, not inside Geng Xu. For a related contrast, see Geng Chen Day Pillar.
Reader check: In the Four Pillars grid, open the Day column and confirm the top stem is 庚 and the bottom branch is 戌. Read the small hidden-stem characters under 戌 and identify 戊, 辛, and 丁. Ask which one is same-element Metal for Geng, and note that only 辛 qualifies as a hidden root. Then compare your year and month pillars with B before drawing any contrast.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
