一 What it is
Geng Yin is the 27th day pillar: Yang Metal sitting on Yang Wood. Think of a steel blade resting on a living tree stump — the blade is sharp, but the stump gives it nothing to grip. That is the core image: Geng has no Metal root inside Yin.
Yin hides three stems: Jia (Indirect Wealth, weight 1), Bing (Seven Killings, weight .5), and Wu (Indirect Resource, weight .3). Notice what is missing. There is no Geng and no Xin hidden in Yin, so this branch cannot root the Day Master. Wu Earth is Resource, not Metal, so it does not root Geng either. Yin's main element is Wood, but that does not make every hidden stem Wood — Jia is Wood, Bing is Fire, Wu is Earth.
What distinguishes this pillar is that the Day Master's own seat offers wealth, pressure, and support in idea-form, yet no Metal anchor. Geng at Yin is in Extinction (Jue) by phase. That label is a phase reference only, not a statement about health, lifespan, or personality. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can.
So when reading Geng Yin, look elsewhere in the chart for hidden Geng or Xin. Those are Metal roots regardless of whether the Ten God label reads Friend or Rob Wealth. A visible Geng or Xin stem is a peer, not itself a hidden root. Earth remains Resource, never a substitute root. This is the practical lens for the whole article.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Geng Yin in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem; the bottom character is the day branch. For Geng Yin, the stem reads 庚 and the branch reads 寅. Small characters beside or beneath 寅 are its hidden stems: 甲, 丙 and 戊. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels, so read those from the article's tables.
If you want to calculate your chart, enter your birth data there and compare the Day column against this pillar. The Day Master is the stem alone; the day pillar is stem plus branch together. There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main grid, so phase lookups belong to the article tables or the full overview.
Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase reading or a strength verdict. If your hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use the calculator with an accurate birthplace and birth time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.
三 How to read it
How to Read Geng Yin Step by Step
Start with the cycle index. Geng Yin is number 27, sitting between Ji Chou and Xin Mao. This layer only fixes order and pairing; it does not add elements or Ten Gods. Next read the stem: Geng is Yang Metal, so the day master is Yang. Then read the branch as a container of hidden stems, not as a single element. Yin is Yang Wood, but its hidden stems are Jia Indirect Wealth at weight 1, Bing Seven Killings at 0.5, and Wu Indirect Resource at 0.3. Keep these layers separate: the branch's main element is Wood, yet Fire and Earth also sit inside it. Do not confuse the branch's main element with every hidden stem inside it.
Now check phase, which is a separate reference from hidden stems. For Geng, phase runs forward; for Xin, it runs in reverse. At Yin, Geng stands in Extinction (Jue). At the day position, the day master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase are identical references, so both read Extinction here. Phase labels are not health, lifespan, biological-age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationship predictions. They simply record a position. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores, and no automatic transformation or new interaction rules follow from them.
Finally read the complete chart. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth. Earth is Resource, so Wu in Yin is Indirect Resource, not a root. A hidden Geng or Xin is a Metal root regardless of whether its Ten God label is Friend or Rob Wealth. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. Keep the reference on Geng: the three stems inside Yin are Wealth, Seven Killings and Resource, not Metal peers.
To repeat the method: identify the cycle index, read stem element and polarity, list hidden stems with Ten Gods and weights, check phase, then scan the whole chart for hidden Metal. In the calculator's Four Pillars grid, find the Day column: the top character is the day stem, the bottom character is the day branch, and small hidden-stem characters sit beneath the branch. There are no hidden Ten God labels and no dedicated phase row, so read those from the two tables below. The Yin Tiger Earthly Branch page explains the branch itself. When comparing two charts, mark only the pillars that actually change; the day pillar Geng Yin stays fixed, so its hidden stems and day phase remain constant.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Geng | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | Indirect Wealth | 1 |
| 丙 | Seven Killings | 0.5 |
| 戊 | Indirect Resource | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Geng phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 庚寅 | 27 | 绝 Extinction |
四 When the reading changes
Chart A: Month Hai, Hour Si
In chart A the month branch is Hai, which hides Ren Eating God and Jia Indirect Wealth but no Metal, so it gives Geng no root. The hour branch Si hides Bing Seven Killings, Geng Friend, and Wu Indirect Resource; that hidden Geng is a genuine Metal root. The year branch Shen adds another hidden Geng. The visible Xin stems in month and hour are Rob Wealth by label, yet a visible peer is not itself a hidden root. Wu Earth appears in Shen, Si, and the day branch Yin, but Earth is Resource, never a root. The day pillar Geng Yin carries Jia Indirect Wealth at 1, Bing Seven Killings at .5, and Wu Indirect Resource at .3, with Geng at Extinction. That phase is a positional reference, not a health, lifespan, or career prediction. Because the day branch holds no Metal, any partner reading is limited to what Yin actually contains; it cannot forecast a relationship outcome.
Chart B: Month Yi Si, Year Wu
Chart B changes the year branch to Wu and the month to Yi Si. Yi is Direct Wealth for Geng, so the month stem's Wealth flavor differs from chart A's Xin Rob Wealth. The new month branch Si hides Bing, Geng, and Wu, adding a month-branch root where Hai in chart A had none. The year branch Wu hides Ding Direct Officer and Ji Direct Resource, adding Fire and Earth but no Metal. The hour branch Si is unchanged and again hides Geng Friend. The day pillar Geng Yin is identical in both charts, so the Day Master's own pillar facts do not shift. Comparing A and B, the pillars that actually change are the year branch and the month stem and branch; day and hour stay fixed. Earth remains Resource throughout, and the fixed weights are presence markers, not seasonal strength scores.
Roots, Resources, and the Yin Day Branch
For Geng, hidden Geng or hidden Xin is a Metal root regardless of whether the label reads Friend or Rob Wealth. Hidden Wu or Ji is Earth, which is Resource, and Resource does not root the Day Master. A branch's main element is not the same as every hidden stem inside it: Yin's main element is Wood, yet it hides Jia, Bing, and Wu, none of them Metal. This is why the day branch Yin gives Geng no root even though it is the Day Master's own pillar. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. To read the phase labels correctly, see how to use the 12 growth phases alongside the hidden stems rather than instead of them.
Career and Reflection Limits
In chart A, the visible Xin stems plus hidden Geng in Shen and Si give a denser Metal presence, while Hai contributes Water and Jia Wealth but no root. In chart B, Yi shifts the month Wealth reading to Direct Wealth, and Wu adds Ding Officer and Ji Resource, so Fire and Earth are more represented while Metal roots stay confined to the two Si branches. These differences show how roots and resources are distributed, but they do not license a career forecast. A reading can note where roots and resources sit and which pillars changed between A and B; it cannot predict job outcomes, income, or relationship results from the day pillar alone. The Day Master phase at Yin is Extinction in both charts, a positional label only, not a claim about personality, health, or destiny.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Geng Metal Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 辛 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 申 | 亥 | 寅 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Rob Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Friend (1) 壬 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
壬 Eating God (1) 甲 Indirect Wealth (0.5) |
甲 Indirect Wealth (1) 丙 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 临官 Adulthood | 病 Sickness | 绝 Extinction | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 沐浴 Bath | 绝 Extinction | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1.5, Fire 1.5, Earth 0.9, Metal 4.5, Water 2.5.
In chart A, the Day pillar is 庚寅: 庚 Yang Metal above 寅 Yang Wood. In the Four Pillars grid, the Day column shows 庚 as the top stem, 寅 as the bottom branch, and the small hidden-stem characters inside that bottom cell. The Day Master phase and the Day pillar-stem phase are the same reference here, both 绝 (Extinction). That label is a structural marker, not a health, lifespan, or personality prediction.
寅 hides 甲 Indirect Wealth at weight 1, 丙 Seven Killings at .5, and 戊 Indirect Resource at .3. These fixed weights are not seasonal strength scores. 寅's main element is Wood, but that does not make every hidden stem Wood: 丙 is Fire and 戊 is Earth. Crucially, 寅 hides no Metal, and 戊 Earth is Resource, not a Metal root. For 庚, a root means hidden 庚 or hidden 辛, whatever its Friend or Rob Wealth label.
Now read the other three pillars of chart A. The year pillar 壬申 hides 庚, giving a real Metal root. The hour pillar 辛巳 also hides 庚, a second root. The month pillar 辛亥 hides 壬 and 甲, no Metal. The visible 辛 stems in month and hour are Rob Wealth on the surface, but visible peers are not themselves hidden roots.
One useful contrast: 申 and 巳 both hide 庚, yet 申's main element is Metal while 巳's is Fire. The root comes from the hidden stem, not the branch's main element. Another: 戊 appears in 申, 寅, and 巳 as Indirect Resource, supporting Metal in Ten Gods terms, but Earth is not hidden Metal and cannot substitute for a root. The Extinction label alone cannot tell you whether roots exist elsewhere; only the hidden stems can.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 乙 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 午 | 巳 | 寅 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Direct Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Direct Officer (1) 己 Direct Resource (0.5) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
甲 Indirect Wealth (1) 丙 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 沐浴 Bath | 长生 Birth | 绝 Extinction | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 沐浴 Bath | 绝 Extinction | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 3.5, Earth 1.4, Metal 3, Water 1.
Chart B runs Ren Wu, Yi Si, Geng Yin, Xin Si. The Day Master is Geng, and the day pillar is Geng Yin: stem Geng above branch Yin, hiding Jia (Indirect Wealth, weight 1), Bing (Seven Killings, weight .5) and Wu (Indirect Resource, weight .3). Geng reaches Extinction (Jue) at Yin, but that phase label is a positional reference, not a statement about health, lifespan or personality. Yin hides no Metal, and Wu Earth is Resource rather than a root, so this pillar gives Geng no root of its own. The Metal roots in B sit in the month and hour branches: both Si conceal Geng at weight .5. Visible stems such as Xin are not themselves hidden roots; only hidden Geng or Xin count. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are teaching proportions, not seasonal strength scores.
Compare with chart A: Ren Shen, Xin Hai, Geng Yin, Xin Si. The day pillar and hour pillar are identical in both charts. What actually changes is the year branch, Shen becomes Wu, and the whole month pillar, Xin Hai becomes Yi Si. In B, Yi is Direct Wealth and Si adds Seven Killings plus a hidden Geng root; Wu in the year hides Ding and Ji, adding Officer and Resource. So B shifts weight toward Wealth, Fire and Officer while retaining roots in two branches: A has Shen and Si, whereas B has Si in both month and hour.
Reader check: Open your Four Pillars grid, find the Day stem Geng, then read each branch's small hidden-stem characters and mark every hidden Geng or Xin. Note which surrounding pillars differ from a comparison chart before interpreting anything, as in the Geng Wu Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
