一 What it is
Geng Zi is the 37th pillar in the 60-pillar cycle: Yang Metal (Geng) sitting on Yang Water (Zi). Its defining feature is that Zi hides exactly one stem, Gui Yin Water, and that hidden Gui is the Hurting Officer to Geng. Think of a metal blade resting in a cold, still pool: the blade is the Day Master, and the pool is the branch. The pool looks like one simple thing, yet only one current moves inside it, and that current is Gui.
What distinguishes Geng Zi is this single hidden stem. Zi is a Yang branch, but its hidden stem is Gui, a Yin Water. Gui is not Wealth to Geng; it is Hurting Officer. Ren Water would be Eating God, so the yin/yang identity of the hidden stem matters, not just the element. Zi also contains no hidden Metal root and no Earth Resource. For Geng, roots come from hidden Geng or Xin, not from Earth. Earth is Resource, and visible peers such as a Geng or Xin stem are not themselves hidden roots. The phase label at the day position is Death for both the Day Master and the pillar stem, but that is a symbolic phase reference, not a statement about health, lifespan, or danger. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. The hidden Gui is therefore the whole story of this branch.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Geng Zi in Your Own Chart
Open the Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. Its top character is your Day Master stem; its bottom character is the day branch. For this pillar, the top is 庚 and the bottom is 子. Small characters printed beside 子 are the hidden stems, so you should see 癸 there. The grid does not label hidden Ten Gods or add a separate growth-phase row.
To check the phase, use the article tables or the full overview: locate 庚 as the row and 子 as the column. The Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase at the day position are the same reference, both 死 (Si). Treat that label symbolically, not as literal death, illness or danger.
Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase and not a strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, the hour pillar is unconfirmed. If birth is near a day boundary, use a calculator with the accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule. To test your own placements, calculate your chart and compare the Day column directly.
三 How to read it
How to Read the Geng Zi Day Pillar
Begin with the cycle index. Geng Zi is pair 37 in the sixty-pillar sequence, and that fixed position tells you the stem and branch before any interpretation starts. The index is a locator, not a verdict. Next, identify the stem element and polarity: 庚 is Yang Metal, so the Day Master is Geng and every Ten God must be assigned from Geng's frame, never Xin's. This matters because Geng and Xin reverse several labels. For Geng, Gui is Hurting Officer; for Xin, Gui would be Eating God. Fixing the Day Master first prevents that error. Only after the stem is settled should you open the branch and read what is hidden inside it.
Now read the hidden Ten Gods. Zi hides only 癸 Gui Yin Water, a Hurting Officer to Geng at full weight. Gui is not Wealth to Geng; Wealth would be Jia or Yi Wood. Zi contains no Metal root and no Earth Resource, so the branch supports output rather than the Day Master's own substance. Do not confuse a branch's main element with every hidden stem inside it, and do not assume a Yang branch must hide a Yang stem. Here Zi is Yang while its only hidden stem, Gui, is Yin. Ren Water would be Eating God, not Gui. The hidden stem is the operative fact; the branch label alone is not.
Then assign the phase. For Geng the sequence runs forward, so at Zi the Day Master phase is 死 Death. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase are identical references, so both read Death. Treat this as a symbolic stage name, not a statement about health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationships. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. Earth is Resource, and hidden Geng or Xin is a Metal root regardless of whether it carries a Friend or Rob Wealth label. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores.
Finally, read the complete chart. The day pillar is one position among four, so check whether other branches hide Geng or Xin, whether Earth Resource appears, and which visible stems actually change between two charts. When comparing chart A and chart B, name the pillars that differ rather than assuming the whole chart shifted. No automatic transformation or new interaction rules follow from this pillar alone. For the branch background, see Zi Rat Earthly Branch.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Geng | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 癸 | Hurting Officer | 1 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Geng phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 庚子 | 37 | 死 Death |
四 When the reading changes
Season and Support: Two Geng Zi Charts Compared
Chart A places Geng in a 亥 month with 申 in the year and 巳 in the hour. The visible metal is heavy: 辛 appears twice, and hidden 庚 sits in 申 and 巳. That hidden metal is the actual root; the 辛 stems are visible peers, not hidden roots. Earth appears only as hidden 戊 at 0.3 in 申 and 巳, so Resource is thin. The day branch 子 holds only 癸 Hurting Officer at weight 1, and 癸 is not Wealth to Geng. Chart B changes the year to 午 and the month to 巳, adding 丁 Direct Officer and 己 Direct Resource in 午 while replacing 辛 Rob Wealth with 乙 Direct Wealth on the month stem. The day pillar is identical, so the Hurting Officer reading itself does not change; what changes is the surrounding pressure and support. In A, the 子 output has metal backing but little Earth; in B, fire and wealth press harder while 己 gives some Resource. Neither chart turns 子 into a metal root, and neither makes 癸 into Wealth.
Root Versus Resource at the Day Branch
For Geng, a root must be hidden 庚 or 辛. Earth is Resource, not a root, even when it is labeled Indirect or Direct Resource. In both charts, 子 contains no hidden metal and no Earth; it contains only 癸 Hurting Officer. That means the day branch gives no root and no Resource to the Day Master. The phase label 死 at 子 is a symbolic phase, not a statement about health, lifespan, or danger. It also cannot create a root. A useful way to read the day branch is to treat it as an output channel: 癸 is yin water hidden inside a yang branch, and for Geng it is Hurting Officer, not Eating God. Ren would be Eating God, but Ren is not hidden in 子. If you want to see how the phase label fits the rest of the chart, how to use the 12 growth phases explains the sequence without turning it into a strength score.
Relationship Reading Limits
Because the day branch carries only Hurting Officer, relationship readings that treat 子 as a spouse palace full of Wealth or Resource are unsupported. In Chart A, the hour 巳 and year 申 add hidden 庚, so the chart has metal roots elsewhere; the day branch still does not become a root. In Chart B, 午 adds 丁 Direct Officer and 己 Direct Resource, and 巳 repeats 丙 Seven Killings and 戊 Indirect Resource. Those placements change the surrounding structure, but they do not alter the day branch’s hidden stem. A partner reading should therefore stay limited to what the day branch actually contains: one hidden Hurting Officer. It should not infer a spouse’s character, wealth, or timing from a stem that is not present. The visible 辛 peers in both charts are not hidden roots, and the 乙 Direct Wealth in B is on the month stem, not inside 子.
Career and Reflection Limits
Career reflection can note that 癸 Hurting Officer in the day branch is an output element, while Wealth for Geng is Jia or Yi. In Chart A, 甲 Indirect Wealth is hidden in 亥 at 0.5, and no visible Wealth stem appears. In Chart B, 乙 Direct Wealth is visible on the month stem, and 午 holds 丁 Direct Officer plus 己 Direct Resource. These are placement differences, not forecasts. The 死 phase at 子 is a phase reference only; it does not predict career decline or require a remedy. A reading can compare how much hidden metal root exists in 申 and 巳, how much Earth Resource appears, and whether Wealth is visible or hidden. It should not claim that 子 automatically transforms, that 癸 becomes Wealth, or that the phase label overrides the hidden stems. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights describe hidden-stem presence, not seasonal strength.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Geng Metal Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 辛 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 申 | 亥 | 子 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Rob Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Friend (1) 壬 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
壬 Eating God (1) 甲 Indirect Wealth (0.5) |
癸 Hurting Officer (1) | 丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 临官 Adulthood | 病 Sickness | 死 Death | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 沐浴 Bath | 死 Death | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.5, Fire 1, Earth 0.6, Metal 4.5, Water 3.5.
Chart A places 庚 Geng as the Day Master in the day pillar 庚子. The top stem is Geng, yang Metal; the bottom branch is Zi, a Water branch. Zi's only listed hidden stem is 癸 Gui, yin Water, weighted 1, and for Geng that hidden Gui is the Hurting Officer. The title "One Hidden Hurting Officer" therefore points to one hidden stem inside the day branch, not to a visible stem on the surface.
The day position's phase is 死 Si, "Death," and the own-pillar-stem phase is also Si. This is a symbolic phase label, not a statement about health, lifespan, biological age, or danger. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can. Zi contains no hidden Metal, so it gives Geng no root, and no hidden Earth, so it gives no Resource. Zi is a Water branch, but its hidden stem here is Gui only. Ren Water, which would be Eating God for Geng, is not hidden in Zi.
Read the other positions in chart A exactly as given. Year 壬申 hides Geng Friend, Ren Eating God, and Wu Indirect Resource. Month 辛亥 hides Ren Eating God and Jia Indirect Wealth. Hour 辛巳 hides Bing Seven Killings, Geng Friend, and Wu Indirect Resource. The visible Xin stems are Rob Wealth peers, not hidden roots. Metal root material appears through hidden Geng in Shen and Si. Earth appears only as hidden Wu Indirect Resource. Gui is not Wealth to Geng; Jia and Yi are Wealth.
What cannot follow from the label: it does not make the whole chart a Hurting Officer structure, does not give Zi a Metal root or Earth Resource, and does not turn Gui into Wealth. It describes one hidden stem in the day branch, while other pillars must be read from their own stems and hidden stems.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 乙 | 庚 | 辛 |
| Branch | 午 | 巳 | 子 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Eating God | Direct Wealth | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Direct Officer (1) 己 Direct Resource (0.5) |
丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
癸 Hurting Officer (1) | 丙 Seven Killings (1) 庚 Friend (0.5) 戊 Indirect Resource (0.3) |
| Geng Day Master phase | 沐浴 Bath | 长生 Birth | 死 Death | 长生 Birth |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 沐浴 Bath | 死 Death | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 3, Earth 1.1, Metal 3, Water 2.
Chart B places Geng Zi at the day position with Ren Wu year, Yi Si month, and Xin Si hour. The Day Master is Geng yang Metal; Zi hides only Gui yin Water, the Hurting Officer. Zi gives no hidden Metal root and no Earth Resource, and Gui is not Wealth to Geng. Geng sits at Death in Zi, a symbolic phase label, not a claim about health or danger.
Compared with chart A, only the year and month pillars change. Chart A has Ren Shen year and Xin Hai month; chart B replaces them with Ren Wu and Yi Si. The day pillar Geng Zi and the hour pillar Xin Si stay identical in both charts, so the hour's hidden Bing, Geng, and Wu remain unchanged.
In chart B, Wu hides Ding Direct Officer and Ji Direct Resource, while Yi is Direct Wealth on the month stem. Both Si branches hide Bing Seven Killings, Geng Friend, and Wu Indirect Resource. That hidden Geng in each Si is what supplies a Metal root; Earth is Resource, not a root, and visible peers are not hidden roots. A phase cannot create a root either.
Chart A had Metal roots in both Shen and Si, and Output in its visible Ren, hidden Ren and day-branch Gui. Chart B loses Shen and gains Wu, so the root picture now rests on the two Si branches, and the month stem shifts from Xin Rob Wealth to Yi Direct Wealth. These are structural differences, not a controlled experiment or a timeline.
To check your own chart, find the day column and confirm Geng over Zi, then read the small hidden-stem characters beneath Zi: only Gui should appear. Scan the other three branches for hidden Geng or Xin. If none appear, this pillar set gives the Day Master no hidden Metal root. For a related case, see the Geng Chen Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
