一 What it is
The Gui You day pillar is a Gui Yin Water Day Master sitting on a You Yin Metal branch whose only hidden stem is Xin Indirect Resource. Think of a rain-fed garden pond: the water is the Day Master, and the metal roof above it is the Resource that keeps feeding it drop by drop. You holds no hidden Ren or Gui, so the branch gives no Water root at all. What it gives is Xin, and Xin is Metal that supports Water rather than Water itself.
That distinction is what separates this pillar from a chart with a real Water root. A hidden Ren or Gui inside a branch would supply the Day Master with same-element support; You supplies none. Visible peers such as Ren or Gui on other stems are not hidden roots either. Metal is the Resource category here, while Earth is the Officer category, never a Resource and never a Water root. The Gui at You phase is Sickness, a symbolic growth-phase label rather than a diagnosis, and because Gui is Yin the phases run in reverse. Ren at You would sit at Bath, so the two stems must not be conflated. The Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase match at the day position because the reference stem there is identical.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Open the Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem, 癸 Gui Yin Water; the bottom character is the branch, 酉 You Yin Metal. Small hidden-stem characters sit inside the branch cell: here only 辛 Xin, Indirect Resource. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels or a dedicated growth-phase row, so read the phase from the article tables or the full overview.
Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase or strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use the calculator to calculate your chart with accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.
To compare charts, compare one pillar at a time and note which positions actually differ. In example A, year 壬申 and month 壬子 add hidden 壬 and 癸 Water roots plus 庚 Direct Resource; the hour 丁巳 stays. In example B, year 壬午 and month 丙午 replace those with Fire and 己 Seven Killings, while day 癸酉 and hour 丁巳 remain. The day pillar itself never changes between them.
三 How to read it
Start with the cycle index. The day pillar sits at a fixed point in the sixty-pair sequence, but that index does not determine a growth phase. Treat this as a positional layer only: it tells you where the pillar sits, not what supports it. Gui is Yin Water, so its phases run backward, while the two phase rows coincide at the day position because they use the identical Gui reference stem. The index says nothing about hidden stems, Resource strength, or Water roots.
Next, fix the stem element and polarity. Gui is Yin Water, and that single fact determines every Ten God label in the chart. Jia is Hurting Officer, Yi Eating God, Bing Direct Wealth, Ding Indirect Wealth, Wu Direct Officer, Ji Seven Killings, Geng Direct Resource, Xin Indirect Resource, Ren Rob Wealth, and Gui Friend. These labels belong to this Gui Day Master, not to a Metal Day Master. Polarity also fixes the reverse phase direction, so do not borrow forward-cycle assumptions from a Yang stem.
Then read the hidden Ten Gods. The You Rooster Earthly Branch hides only Xin at weight 1, an Indirect Resource. Xin is Metal that supports Water, so it feeds the Day Master without being Water itself. You holds no hidden Ren or Gui, so this pillar supplies no Water root. A Water root appears only when another branch hides Ren or Gui, and a root is same-stem only when that hidden Water is Gui. Visible Water stems are peers, not hidden roots. Earth stays in the Officer category, never Resource and never a Water root. A hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs.
Finally, combine phase with the complete chart. The day phase is Sickness, and the day stem phase matches because the reference stem is identical at that position. Sickness is symbolic cycle language, not a diagnosis or life-event prediction. Now compare charts by position. In chart A, Shen, Zi, and Si hide Ren, Gui, Geng, Bing, and Wu, adding Water roots and Resource support around the unchanged day pillar. In chart B, the year and month become Ren Wu and Bing Wu, so hidden stems shift to Ding and Ji, replacing Water roots with Wealth and Seven Killings. The day pillar stays Gui You in both, so its hidden Xin and Sickness phase remain constant while the surrounding support changes. Compare the year and month columns to identify which pillars actually differ.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Gui | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 辛 | Indirect Resource | 1 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Gui phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 癸酉 | 10 | 病 Sickness |
四 When the reading changes
When the Year and Month Are Both Ren Water
In chart A, the year and month pillars are 壬申 and 壬子, so two visible Ren Rob Wealth stems sit above a Metal branch and a Water branch. The month branch 子 hides Gui Friend at full weight, giving the Gui Day Master a genuine same-element root; the year branch 申 hides Geng Direct Resource, Ren Rob Wealth, and Wu Direct Officer. The day branch 酉 still hides only Xin Indirect Resource, so the Day Master receives support from Metal rather than from hidden Water inside its own branch. Water roots are present in the month through Gui and in the year through Ren, while the day pillar itself remains a pure Indirect Resource seat. The practical contrast is between a Day Master that has external Water reinforcement and a day branch that supplies only Metal. Reading the day pillar alone would miss the month root entirely, so relationship or career reflections should begin from the whole chart, not from 癸酉 in isolation.
When Fire Dominates the Year and Month
Chart B replaces 壬申 and 壬子 with 壬午 and 丙午, so the visible stems become Ren Rob Wealth, Bing Direct Wealth, Gui Day Master, and Ding Indirect Wealth. Fire now occupies both year and month branches, each hiding Ding Indirect Wealth and Ji Seven Killings. No branch in chart B hides Water. The year stem Ren is a visible peer, not a hidden root; the day branch 酉 still hides Xin Indirect Resource alone. Here the Day Master is surrounded by Wealth and Officer categories, and the Indirect Resource in 酉 becomes a quiet counterweight rather than a source of Water. Career reflection in this configuration should focus on how Metal support operates when Fire and Earth dominate the surrounding pillars, not on predicting outcomes. The day pillar's contribution is consistent, but its meaning shifts with the season and the neighbouring stems.
Reading the Sickness Phase at the Day Position
Gui is a Yin Day Master, so its growth phases run in reverse. At 酉 the Day Master phase is 病, Sickness, and because the day stem and the reference stem are identical, the pillar stem phase matches at 病 as well. This is symbolic phase language, not a health diagnosis or a life-event prediction. The same 酉 branch would carry a different phase label for a Yang Day Master, and Ren at 酉 would be 沐浴, Bath, not 病. Keeping that distinction clear matters when comparing charts: the phase describes the Day Master's position in its own cycle, while the hidden Xin Indirect Resource describes what the branch actually supplies. To see how these labels are read across a full chart, how to use the 12 growth phases explains the sequence and its reverse direction for Yin stems.
Root Versus Resource in the Day Pillar
The 酉 branch hides only Xin Indirect Resource at weight 1. Xin is Metal, and Metal produces Water, so it supports the Gui Day Master without being Water itself. A Water root would require a hidden Ren or Gui, and 酉 contains neither. Visible peers such as the Ren stems in charts A and B are not hidden roots, and Earth stems belong to the Officer category rather than to Resource or Water; a branch must still be checked for its individual hidden stems. This distinction shapes how the day pillar is read: 癸酉 offers Indirect Resource support, and any same-element root must come from another branch. In chart A the month 子 provides that root through hidden Gui Friend; in chart B no hidden Water root appears at all. The day pillar's teaching value lies in this consistent contrast between Metal support and Water root, which remains stable across both examples.

Weighted element totals: Wood 0, Fire 2, Earth 0.6, Metal 2.5, Water 4.5.
Chart A places 癸 Gui Yin Water on 酉 You at the day pillar, with 壬 Ren Rob Wealth on the year and month stems over 申 Shen and 子 Zi, and 丁 Ding Indirect Wealth on the hour stem over 巳 Si. The day branch You holds one hidden stem only: 辛 Xin Indirect Resource at full weight. No hidden Ren or Gui sits inside You, so the day branch supplies Metal that supports Gui, not Water that roots it. Metal is the Resource category; a Water root would require a hidden Ren or Gui, and a same-element root counts as same-stem only when it matches the actual Day Master, here Gui.
The Water roots in chart A come from elsewhere. Shen hides 庚 Geng Direct Resource, 壬 Ren Rob Wealth and 戊 Wu Direct Officer; Zi hides 癸 Gui Friend. Those hidden Ren and Gui are the actual roots, while the visible Ren on the year and month stems are peers, not hidden roots. Earth remains the Officer category and never becomes Resource or a Water root.
Gui is Yin Water, so its growth phases run reverse. At You the Day Master phase is 病 Bing Sickness, and because the day pillar's own stem is the reference stem, the pillar-stem phase is also Bing Sickness. This is stage symbolism for the pillar, not a diagnosis or life-event prediction. It also differs from Ren at You, which would carry a different phase because Ren is Yang.
One useful contrast: the day pillar's hidden Xin is Indirect Resource, while the year branch's hidden Ren is Rob Wealth. Xin feeds Gui as Metal; Ren roots Gui as Water. The label "Gui You" therefore cannot be read as a Water-rooted day pillar, because You contains no Water at all.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 癸 | 丁 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 酉 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Rob Wealth | Direct Wealth | Day Master | Indirect Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Indirect Wealth (1) 己 Seven Killings (0.5) |
丁 Indirect Wealth (1) 己 Seven Killings (0.5) |
辛 Indirect Resource (1) | 丙 Direct Wealth (1) 庚 Direct Resource (0.5) 戊 Direct Officer (0.3) |
| Gui Day Master phase | 绝 Extinction | 绝 Extinction | 病 Sickness | 胎 Conception |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 病 Sickness | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0, Fire 5, Earth 1.3, Metal 1.5, Water 2.
Chart B places Ren Wu in the year, Bing Wu in the month, Gui You in the day, and Ding Si in the hour. The year and month pillars are the ones that actually change from chart A, which had Ren Shen and Ren Zi there. Wu holds Ding Indirect Wealth and Ji Seven Killings, so fire rises sharply and the month's hidden Gui root disappears. The Day Master phase at Wu is Extinction, and the year stem Ren at Wu is Conception, not Sickness; Ren at You would be Bath, a different stem that must not be confused with Gui at You Sickness.
Chart A has Shen and Zi branches, supplying hidden Ren and Gui Water roots alongside Metal Resource. In B, Xin Indirect Resource remains inside You and Geng Direct Resource remains inside the hour branch Si. Xin is Metal that supports Water, not Water itself, so You still supplies no hidden Water root. Earth remains the Officer category, never Resource or a Water root, and visible Ren is a peer rather than a hidden root. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores, and a hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs.
Because Gui is Yin, its phases run in reverse, so Gui at You sits in Sickness, a symbolic phase image rather than a diagnosis. The Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase match at the Day position because the reference stem there is identical.
To check this, open the Four Pillars grid, read the Day top stem and bottom branch, then compare the small hidden-stem characters in the year and month against the Day Master's own root. For a related metal-resource pattern, see the Xin You Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
