How to Calculate Na Yin: A Reliable Stem-Branch Lookup

一 What it is

Na Yin is a fixed three-character label assigned to a complete stem-branch pair, retrieved from a lookup table rather than calculated from element counts.

Think of a coat-check ticket: the ticket number does not create the coat, it only tells the attendant which item to bring back. The pair 甲辰 is the ticket; 覆灯火 (Lamp Fire) is what the verified table returns.

This article covers one reproducible workflow: obtain exact Year, Month, Day, and Hour pairs from a calculator, confirm each pair exists in the sixty-cycle, find its one-based index, group indexes as 1–2, 3–4, and so on, then read the Chinese name and element from a verified table. The group number floor((index−1)/2)+1 locates a row; the group number alone does not derive the element.

Month pillars follow solar-term boundaries, and exact birthplace and time can alter pillars, so treat the calculator output as the starting data. For Chart A the pairs are 辛未, 辛丑, 甲辰, 己巳. In the sixty-cycle these are indexes 8, 38, 41, and 6. Grouping gives 4, 19, 21, and 3.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Open the main calculator and find the Four Pillars grid: Year, Month, Day, Hour. Each column shows a top stem and bottom branch, plus small hidden stem characters. Copy the complete pair in the column you need, such as 甲辰 or 甲戌. The Day Master is only the day stem, here 甲 Yang Wood. There is no Na Yin row in the main grid, so the article supplies that lookup separately. To calculate your chart, use the exact birthplace and time, because the Month depends on the solar-term boundary and an unknown hour leaves the hour pillar unconfirmed.

Validate the copied pair inside the 60-cycle: it must be a real stem-branch combination, not any stem plus any branch. Then identify its one-based index from 1 to 60. Group adjacent pairs beginning at 1/2, so indexes 1 and 2 form group 1, indexes 3 and 4 form group 2, and so on. The row number is floor((index-1)/2)+1. That group number locates a row in the verified Na Yin table; the group number alone does not derive the element.

Read one column at a time: top = stem; bottom = branch. Together they form the complete pillar. Day Master = the Day stem alone. Article tables provide the additional lookup.

三 How to read it

Na Yin is a lookup label attached to a complete stem-branch pair, so the first step is getting four exact pairs. Use a calculator that states its time convention, then record Year, Month, Day and Hour as two-character pillars. The Month pillar follows a solar term boundary, not the civil calendar month, and an exact birthplace and birth time can change one or more pillars. If the hour is unknown, the Hour pillar is unconfirmed and its Na Yin cannot be responsibly assigned. For the worked example below, Chart A has 辛未 year, 辛丑 month, 甲辰 day and 己巳 hour, with 甲 Yang Wood as Day Master.

Before looking anything up, confirm that each pair is a valid combination in the the sixty Jia Zi cycle. A stem and branch only pair when their cycle positions match, so 甲辰 is valid while 甲丑 is not. Once validated, identify the pair's one-based index in that cycle: 甲子 is 1, 乙丑 is 2, and so on to 癸亥 at 60. This index is a position, not a rank or score. If another calculator appears to disagree, compare the complete pairs and the time conventions first; do not assume every system is identical.

Na Yin groups the cycle into thirty adjacent pairs beginning at indexes 1 and 2. The group number is floor((index − 1) / 2) + 1, which locates the correct row, but the group number alone does not derive the element. For Chart A: 辛未 is index 8, giving group 4, 路旁土 (Roadside Earth); 辛丑 is index 38, group 19, 壁上土 (Wall Earth); 甲辰 is index 41, group 21, 覆灯火 (Lamp Fire); 己巳 is index 6, group 3, 大林木 (Great Forest Wood). The table below is a static worked example for Chart A only, not a live chart panel.

Na Yin is an independently assigned whole-pair label, not a hidden stem, Ten God, growth phase or Day Master element. In Chart A, the Day pillar 甲辰 carries 覆灯火, but that Fire label does not create hidden Fire stems, and Na Yin Wood or Water never manufactures hidden Wood or Water. Hidden stems keep their own element and polarity: for 甲 Wood, hidden 甲 or 乙 supplies Wood root, only 甲 is same-stem root, while Water Resource remains distinct. Growth phases depend on the reference stem and branch, with Yang forward, Yin reverse and Earth following Fire; at the Day position the Day Master phase and own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical. Compare Chart B, whose Day pillar 甲戌 gives 山头火 (Mountain-Top Fire): sharing a Na Yin element with Chart A does not mean the same label, branches, hidden contents or chart.

The solar-term month boundary determines the month pair used in this lookup, not an assumed lunar-month number.

Chart A position Complete pair Cycle index Paired group Na Yin name Element
Year 辛未 8 4 路旁土 — Roadside Earth Earth
Month 辛丑 38 19 壁上土 — Wall Earth Earth

Hour 己巳 6 3 大林木 — Great Forest Wood Wood

四 When the reading changes

Same Stem, Different Pair: Why 甲辰 and 甲戌 Are Not Interchangeable

Begin with the observable condition: two pillars can share the same stem yet carry different Na Yin labels. In Chart A the day pillar is 甲辰; in Chart B it is 甲戌. Both stems are 甲, but the complete pairs differ, so the lookup keys differ. Reproduce the check by obtaining exact Year, Month, Day, and Hour pairs from a calculator, then validating each pair inside the 60cycle. 甲辰 sits at one-based index 41, while 甲戌 sits at index 11. Grouping adjacent pairs beginning at 1/2 gives group 21 for 甲辰 and group 6 for 甲戌. This shows that 甲辰 retrieves 覆灯火 (Lamp Fire) and 甲戌 retrieves 山头火 (Mountain-Top Fire). The shared stem alone never determines the label; only the whole valid pair does.

Same Na Yin Element, Different Label: Fire Is Not One Thing

A second observable condition is that two pillars may share a Na Yin element while carrying different Chinese names. Chart A’s day pillar 甲辰 returns 覆灯火, element Fire. Chart B’s day pillar 甲戌 returns 山头火, element Fire. Reproduce the check by locating each pair’s index, then its group row, then reading the row’s Chinese name and element. Both rows show Fire, but the labels differ, and the branches differ: 辰 versus 戌. This shows that “Fire” is an element category, not a label identity. Na Yin Wood or Water does not create hidden Wood or Water stems, and it does not alter the calculator’s fixed 1/.5/.3 weights. Those weights are bookkeeping, not seasonal strength. Compare complete pairs before interpreting any apparent disagreement with another calculator.

Choosing the Correct Pillar: Day Is Not Year or Hour

A third observable condition is that Na Yin must be retrieved for the specific pillar under discussion. Chart A’s four pillars are 辛未, 辛丑, 甲辰, and 己巳. Their Na Yin labels are 路旁土 (Roadside Earth), 壁上土 (Wall Earth), 覆灯火 (Lamp Fire), and 大林木 (Great Forest Wood). Reproduce the check by confirming each pair’s index and group: 辛未 is index 8, group 4; 辛丑 is index 38, group 19; 甲辰 is index 41, group 21; 己巳 is index 6, group 3. This shows that the day pillar’s label belongs to 甲辰, not to the year or hour. The group number alone locates a row; it does not derive the element. Exact birthplace and time also matter, so use the true solar time guide when checking time corrections.

Labels Versus Hidden Stems and Element Totals

A fourth observable condition is that a Na Yin label is not a hidden stem, Ten God, growth phase, or Day Master element. For Chart A’s 甲辰 day pillar, the hidden stems are 戊 (Indirect Wealth), 乙 (Rob Wealth), and 癸 (Direct Resource). The Na Yin label 覆灯火 is an independently assigned whole-pair lookup result. Reproduce the check by reading the hidden-stem list separately from the Na Yin row, then comparing the supplied element totals: Wood 1.8, Fire 1.5, Earth 4.3, Metal 2.8, Water 0.8. Do not add Na Yin elements to those totals. For Jia Wood, hidden Jia or Yi supplies Wood root, only Jia is same-stem root, and Water Resource is distinct. At the day position, Day Master phase and own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical; cycle index is position, not ranking.

Begin with a complete four-pillar result from a calculator, not a guessed date. For teaching Chart A the pillars are 辛未 year, 辛丑 month, 甲辰 day, 己巳 hour. Each is a valid stem-branch pair. The month pillar depends on the solar-term boundary, and an exact birthplace and birth time can change pillars, so treat the hour as unconfirmed when the time is unknown. The main calculator display need not show a Na Yin row; this article supplies the lookup table for Chart A only.

Validate each pair inside the 60-cycle, then read its one-based index. Group adjacent indexes beginning 1/2, so group number is floor((index−1)/2)+1. 辛未 is index 8, group 4: 路旁土, Roadside Earth. 辛丑 is index 38, group 19: 壁上土, Wall Earth. 甲辰 is index 41, group 21: 覆灯火, Lamp Fire. 己巳 is index 6, group 3: 大林木, Great Forest Wood. The group number locates a row; it does not itself derive the element.

First, confirm the day pair 甲辰 sits at index 41, beside 乙巳, giving 覆灯火, element Fire. Second, compare that with the day stem and branch contents. The day stem 甲 is Yang Wood, so the Day Master element is Wood. The branch 辰 hides 戊 Indirect Wealth, 乙 Rob Wealth and 癸 Direct Resource. Hidden stems keep their own element and polarity; a visible peer is not itself a hidden root. Na Yin Wood or Water does not create hidden Wood or Water stems.

Na Yin is an independently assigned whole-pair lookup label, not a hidden stem, Ten God, growth phase or Day Master element. At the day position the Day Master phase and own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical: 甲 over 辰 gives 衰, Decline. The sexagenary index identifies the pair; Decline is a separate phase lookup, and neither is a ranking. If another calculator appears to disagree, compare complete pairs and time conventions before interpreting anything; do not assume all systems are identical.

Na Yin 纳音 is a whole-pillar label. Take each exact stem-branch pair from a calculator, confirm it belongs to the sixty-cycle, note its one-based index, then group indexes as 1–2, 3–4, and so on. Group number = floor((index−1)/2)+1. For Chart A, 甲辰 is index 41, so group 21 gives 覆灯火, “Lamp Fire.” The group number locates a row; it never derives the element by itself. Month pillars depend on the solar-term boundary, and birthplace or birth time can change pillars, so treat an unknown hour as unconfirmed.

Chart B is 辛巳, 辛丑, 甲戌, 己巳. Its year pillar changes from 辛未 to 辛巳, and its day pillar from 甲辰 to 甲戌. The month 辛丑 and hour 己巳 stay identical. So the year label becomes 白蜡金, White-Wax Metal, and the day label becomes 山头火, Mountain-Top Fire. This is a lookup comparison, not a controlled experiment or a fate story. Both charts share a 甲 Yang Wood Day Master, yet the day Na Yin labels differ: same Day Master does not imply the same Na Yin label.

Chart A’s day pillar, the Jia Chen day pillar, hides 戊, 乙 and 癸. Chart B’s 甲戌 hides 戊, 辛 and 丁. Both day labels are Fire, but Fire is only the assigned pair label; it creates no hidden Wood or Water stems. Hidden stems keep their own element and polarity, and a visible peer is not itself a hidden root. For 甲 Wood, hidden 甲 or 乙 supplies Wood root, only 甲 is same-stem root, while Water Resource stays distinct. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are calculator bookkeeping, not seasonal strengths.

Write all four complete pairs, confirm each index, and retrieve each row. Then compare positions: which pairs changed, which stayed, and which labels moved. If another calculator seems to disagree, compare complete pairs and time conventions before interpreting anything; do not assume all systems are identical. Keep annual-pillar and day-pillar labels separate. Finally, check whether the main interface even shows a Na Yin row — this article’s table covers Chart A only, not a live widget.

六 What the counts mean

The lookup contains 60 stem–branch entries grouped into 30 named pairs. Each Na Yin name covers two adjacent cycle entries. Each of the five elements has six names and twelve entries. These counts describe the lookup table, not the proportion of people or a probability of any life outcome.
