一 What it is
A Ji You day pillar is a day pillar whose day stem is 己 (Ji) Yin Earth and whose day branch is 酉 (You) Yin Metal, and its only hidden stem is 辛 (Xin) Yin Metal, the Eating God relative to Ji. Think of a quiet workshop: the building is Earth, the finished metal parts inside are the output, and only one tool — Xin — sits on the bench. Nothing else is stored in that room.
What distinguishes Ji You is that the branch hides exactly one stem, and that stem is the Eating God rather than the Hurting Officer. Because Ji is Yin Earth and Xin is Yin Metal, the polarity matches, so the output is Eating God; Geng, the Yang Metal hidden in other branches, would be Hurting Officer instead. You also contains no Earth and no Fire, so it offers Ji no hidden root and no Resource. The phase label for Ji at You is Birth under the Earth-follows-Fire reverse convention, but that is a stem-branch lookup, not a root and not a literal birth event. A root would require hidden Earth stems such as Wu or Ji; Metal output does not root the Earth Day Master.
To check this pillar, look at the day branch itself: confirm the hidden list contains only Xin, confirm Xin is labeled Eating God, and confirm no Earth or Fire appears among the hidden stems. Then compare the day stem's phase at You with the pillar stem's phase at You — for Ji You they are the same lookup, not two different energies. Finally, scan the other branches for hidden Earth if you want to know whether Ji has a root elsewhere; You alone does not provide one.
二 Where to find it in your chart
In a Four Pillars grid, the day column is the reference point for the whole chart. Its top character is the Day Master, the stem that represents you in the reading; its bottom character is the day branch, which describes the palace closest to you. For 己酉, the Day Master is 己 only, while the day pillar is both 己 and 酉 together. Hidden stems appear as small characters beneath the branch, so 酉 shows 辛 as its single hidden stem. That hidden 辛 is the Eating God of 己, because Yin Earth produces Yin Metal and the polarity matches. 酉 hides no Earth and no Fire, so it supplies no root for 己 and no Resource for 己. The Birth phase for 己 at 酉 is a stem-branch lookup, not a literal birth, a health reading, or a development timeline. It cannot create a root, and it does not predict timing. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed; near a day boundary, use a calculator with an accurate birthplace and time rather than inventing a universal rollover rule. To check these placements in your own chart, calculate your chart and compare the day column against the hidden stems shown under each branch.
三 How to read it
How the Ji You Day Pillar Is Read
Start with the cycle index, not the Ten God label. Ji You is pair 46 in the sexagenary sequence, a legal pillar because the yin stem 己 pairs with the yin branch 酉. That index fixes the pillar's place in the sixty-pair rotation; it does not describe strength, character, or outcome. Keep this layer separate from everything that follows, because the sequence number and elemental relationships answer different questions.
Next, identify the stem element and polarity. 己 is yin Earth, so in this article the actual Day Master is Ji Earth. Every Ten God must be calculated from 己, never from another stem. Then read the branch's hidden stems. 酉 hides only 辛, yin Metal. For Ji Earth, Metal is Output, and because 辛 is yin while 己 is yin, the polarity matches and 辛 is Eating God. It is not Hurting Officer, which would require a yang Metal such as 庚. The hidden-stem polarity does not need to match the branch's own polarity; what matters is the relationship to the actual Day Master.
Now check for roots. A root requires hidden stems of the same element as the Day Master: Earth for 己. 酉 contains no Earth and no Fire Resource, so Ji You gives 己 no root in its own branch. The single hidden 辛 is pure Output. This is why the pillar is described as one hidden Eating God rather than a rooted Earth pillar. A branch's main qi does not erase other hidden stems, but here there simply are none beyond 辛.
Finally, add the phase lookup and the complete chart. Using the declared convention that Earth follows Fire, Ji runs in reverse like Ding, so 己 at 酉 is Birth (长生). The day-position Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase are the same lookup, not two different energies. Phase is a stem-branch reference, not a score, health measure, or prediction, and it cannot create a root or forecast timing. Read the full chart only after these layers are separated: cycle index, stem element and polarity, hidden Ten Gods, phase, then the surrounding pillars. In the two teaching charts below, both use 己 as the actual Day Master, so the same reference applies throughout.
For a practical reader check, open the You Rooster Earthly Branch reference and confirm that 酉 hides only 辛. Then verify the Ten God against the actual day stem, not against a label borrowed from another article. If the day stem were 庚 instead, 辛 would be Rob Wealth, not Eating God. This check prevents borrowing the wrong Ten God label.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Ji | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 辛 | Eating God | 1 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Ji phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 己酉 | 46 | 长生 Birth |
四 When the reading changes
Season and Support: Reading the Ji You Day Pillar in Context
When the day pillar is 己酉, the branch 酉 hides only 辛, the Eating God. Because 辛 is Yin Metal and 己 is Yin Earth, the output relationship is Eating God rather than Hurting Officer. A reader should first check the month branch and the rest of the chart for actual Earth roots or Fire Resource. 酉 contains no Earth and no Fire, so the day branch itself supplies neither a root for 己 nor a Resource for 己. A root requires hidden same-element stems — Earth for Ji — and The phase lookup for 己 at 酉 is 長生, Birth, but that is a stem-branch reference, not a literal birth event and not a root. The same lookup applies to the day stem and the pillar stem at the day position; they are identical, not two separate energies. To see how this reference fits the wider cycle, review how to use the 12 growth phases before comparing positions.
Root Versus Resource: What the Day Branch Does and Does Not Provide
In a chart such as 壬申 辛亥 己酉 己巳, the hour branch 巳 hides 丙 Direct Resource, 庚 Hurting Officer and 戊 Rob Wealth. That Fire Resource supports 己 but is not an Earth root; the hidden 戊 in 巳 is an Earth root. The year branch 申 hides 庚, 壬 and 戊; 庚 is Metal, yet Metal is output for Earth, not a root for 己. The month branch 亥 hides 壬 and 甲, giving Wealth and Officer influences but no Earth root. Only hidden Earth stems — 戊 or 己 — would count as roots for the actual Day Master 己. Visible peers such as a 己 stem are not hidden roots. In this example, both 申 and 巳 hide 戊 Earth, so roots exist outside the day branch; their presence is not by itself a strength verdict.
Relationship Reading Limits: Eating God Without a Root
The single hidden 辛 Eating God in 酉 is the only Ten God inside the day branch. It does not automatically describe a person's character, talents or relationship style. A reader can observe that output is present at the day position and then check whether other pillars repeat or support that output. If the month stem is 辛, as in 壬申 辛亥 己酉 己巳, the Eating God appears visibly as well as hidden, but the month branch 亥 still hides no Earth root. Relationship readings should stay with observable placements: which stems and hidden stems are present, whether Earth roots exist elsewhere, and whether Fire Resource appears in other branches. The day branch alone does not determine partnership outcomes.
Career and Reflection Limits: Phase Reference and Practical Checks
Career reflection should not treat 己酉 as a profession indicator. The phase 長生 at 酉 is a lookup convention, not a score, health marker or developmental timeline. In 壬午 丙午 己酉 己巳, Fire Resource is strong through 午 and 巳, yet the day branch still hides only 辛 Eating God and no Earth root. A reader comparing the two teaching charts should track where Earth actually hides, where Fire Resource appears, and how many output stems are visible. The phase direction for 己 runs reverse like 丁 under the Earth-follows-Fire convention, but that convention is declared, not universal. Use the phase as one reference among many, and keep conclusions tied to observable stems, hidden stems and branch positions rather than to the phase name alone.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Ji Earth Day Master; several other placements differ.

In chart A the sequence is 壬申 year, 辛亥 month, 己酉 day, 己巳 hour. The Day Pillar 己酉 sits in the day position, with the actual Day Master 己 on the stem and 酉 on the branch. 酉 hides only 辛, and for 己 that 辛 is Eating God. No second hidden stem exists in 酉, so no Earth root and no Fire Resource hides inside this branch. The hour branch 巳 does hide 丙 Direct Resource and 戊 Rob Wealth, but those belong to 巳, not to 酉. A root for 己 requires hidden Earth; 巳's 戊 is Earth, yet that root is contributed by the hour branch rather than the day branch. The label "single hidden Eating God" therefore describes 酉's contents, not the whole chart's support. The day stem 己 and day branch 酉 share the same phase lookup, 长生 Birth, because the day-position stem phase and Day Master phase use the identical stem-branch reference; they are not two separate energies. Contrast this with the month pillar 辛亥, where 辛 is Eating God on the stem and 亥 hides 壬 Direct Wealth and 甲 Direct Officer. Calling the month branch Wealth because a Wealth stem appears elsewhere would be a misreading; 辛 is Output, and the Wealth sits hidden in 亥. A reader checking chart A should confirm that 酉's only hidden stem is 辛, that no Earth or Fire hides in 酉, and that the 巳 root is external to the day pillar.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 己 | 己 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 酉 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Direct Wealth | Direct Resource | Day Master | Friend |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Indirect Resource (1) 己 Friend (0.5) |

| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 长生 Birth | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0, Fire 4, Earth 3.3, Metal 1.5, Water 1.
Chart B places Ji You in the day position with 壬午 year, 丙午 month, and 己巳 hour. The day stem 己 and day branch 酉 keep the same lookup as the pillar-stem phase at that position; they are one reference, not two energies. You hides only Xin 辛, the Eating God relative to Ji. Because Ji is Yin Earth, its phase sequence runs in reverse like Ding, and Earth-follows-Fire is the declared convention used here. At You, Ji reads Birth (长生). That label is a stem-branch lookup, not a root, a health signal, or a development timeline. You contains no hidden Earth, so it gives Ji no root; its hidden Xin is Metal, which is Output for Earth, not Resource. The Birth phase does not change that.
Compared with chart A, the year and month pillars change: A has 壬申 and 辛亥, while B has 壬午 and 丙午. The hour pillar 己巳 stays the same. In B, the two 午 branches hide Ding Indirect Resource and Ji Friend. Those hidden stems are not visible stems, and the hidden Ji Friend is a same-stem Earth root for Ji. The month stem 丙 is Direct Resource, but the month branch 午 is not automatically Wealth just because the year stem 壬 is Direct Wealth. A root for Ji requires hidden Earth; a root for Geng would require hidden Metal.
For a reader check, list each branch's hidden stems, mark which ones match Ji's Earth element, and note that none of the day-branch hidden stems do. Then compare the surrounding pillars with chart A: the year and month branches shift from 申亥 to 午午, while the day and hour pillars remain 己酉 and 己巳. This is a placement comparison, not a controlled experiment. For a related day-pillar comparison, see Ji Chou Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
