一 What it is
Jia Zi is the first pillar of the sixty-term stem-branch cycle: Yang Wood (Jia) sitting on the Zi branch, whose only hidden stem is Gui, Yin Water. Think of a tall tree planted beside a deep well: the trunk is visible, but the water that feeds it sits below ground and never appears as wood. That hidden Gui is a Direct Resource to Jia, meaning water that supports the Day Master rather than wood that extends it.
What distinguishes this pillar is a polarity mismatch. Jia is Yang, Zi is Yang, yet the hidden stem Gui is Yin. The branch and its hidden stem do not share polarity, but the Gui-to-Jia relationship is still named Direct Resource; the polarity difference does not turn it into Indirect Resource. In the phase convention used here, Jia at Zi sits in Bath (Mu Yu) — a lookup result from the stem-branch table, not a score, health marker, or prediction. Bath and the separate Peach Blossom star use different rules; neither a Bath label nor this day pillar alone is a romance forecast.
Two points are easy to blur:
- Resource is not root. Zi hides only Gui Water. No hidden stem in Zi contains Wood, so Jia gains no hidden Wood root from its own day branch. A visible Jia stem elsewhere does not count as a hidden root either.
- Same pillar, different chart. In one teaching chart, water totals 4.5 with Wood at 1; in another, fire totals 4 and water 2. The day pillar is identical, but the surrounding pillars change what the resource meets.
The day branch is traditionally the Spouse Palace, yet Gui Resource sitting there is not a spouse personality diagnosis. Personality, learning, relationship, and career angles can be read only as optional traditional reflection, never as a profile, a compatible-spouse list, or a job recommendation.
二 Where to find it in your chart
In a Four Pillars grid, the Day column is your reference column: the top stem is the Day Master (here Jia, Yang Wood), while the bottom branch is the day branch. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside the branch cell; for Zi, the only hidden stem is Gui (Yin Water), a Direct Resource relative to Jia. The Day Master is the stem alone, but the day pillar means stem and branch together.
This calculator has no dedicated growth-phase row in the main grid. Phase is a separate stem-branch lookup: Jia over Zi reads as Bath in the convention used here, not a strength score, health marker, or prediction. Element balance is shown as weighted totals, not a phase verdict. In example A, water totals 4.5 with wood 1; in example B, fire totals 4 and water 2, so the same Jia Zi day pillar sits in different full charts.
Zi hides only Gui Water, so it offers no hidden Wood root; the visible Jia stem is not a hidden root either. Gui as Direct Resource is not the same as root. The day branch is traditionally called the Spouse Palace, but Gui there is not a spouse personality diagnosis.
To inspect your own grid, calculate your chart. If the hour is unknown, treat it as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.
三 How to read it
Reading Jia Zi in Layers
Start with the cycle index: Jia Zi is pair one of the sixty. That number places it in the sequence; it says nothing yet about strength, character or outcome. Next read the stem: Jia is Yang Wood, the Day Master in both teaching charts. Then read the branch: Zi is Yang Water by polarity, while its only hidden stem, Gui, is Yin Water. Relative to Jia, Gui is Direct Resource. So the pillar combines a visible Yang Wood stem with a hidden Yin Water resource, and the two polarities do not match. Zi hides no Wood, so this resource is not a root. A visible Jia stem elsewhere is a peer, not a hidden Wood root.
Phase, Full Chart and the Tables
Phase is a separate layer. Under the convention used here, Jia at Zi sits in Bath, the same phase for the day stem and the pillar stem. Bath is a stem-branch lookup, not a score, health marker, biological age or prediction, and it is not the Peach Blossom star or a romance forecast. The tables below list Zi’s hidden Gui and its Ten God relative to Jia, then show Jia Zi’s cycle index and Jia’s phase at Zi. They are not a complete phase matrix or a full sixty-pair table.
Why the Full Chart Still Matters
Two charts can share Jia Zi and diverge everywhere else. Example A runs Ren Shen, Ren Zi, Jia Zi, Ji Si: water totals 4.5, fire 1, and the month branch Zi repeats the day branch. Example B runs Ren Wu, Bing Wu, Jia Zi, Ji Si: fire totals 4, water 2, and the doubled Wu branches change what surrounds the same day pillar. In A the winter water-support reading dominates; in B the fire and output side is far heavier. Same day pillar, different full chart, so no shared person profile follows.
A Repeatable Order
- Identify the cycle index and the day stem's element and polarity.
- List the branch's hidden stems and convert each to its Ten God relative to Jia.
- Check whether any hidden stem is actually Wood before calling anything a root.
- Look up the day stem's phase at that branch, then total the other pillars.
The day branch is traditionally the Spouse Palace, and here it holds Gui Direct Resource. That is a structural observation about the palace, not a spouse personality diagnosis. Personality, learning, relationship and career themes can be framed only as optional traditional reflection. For the branch itself, see zi rat earthly branch.
To place this pair among the other Jia pillars, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Jia | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 癸 | Direct Resource | 1 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Jia phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 甲子 | 1 | 沐浴 Bath |
四 When the reading changes
Jia Zi in a Winter Water-Heavy Chart
Example A places Jia Zi in a 壬申 year, 壬子 month, and 己巳 hour. The month branch Zi repeats the day branch, so the hidden 癸 Direct Resource appears twice, while two visible 壬 stems add Indirect Resource. Water totals 4.5 against Wood at 1, so the resource is abundant and seasonally supported. Yet Zi hides only Gui Water; it contains no Wood, so this is resource, not a hidden Wood root. The visible Jia stem is the Day Master itself and does not count as its own hidden root. At the day pillar, Jia sits in Bath (Mu Yu), a phase read from the stem-branch lookup rather than a score or prediction. Because the day branch is traditionally the Spouse Palace, some readers reflect on how a Gui Resource there might color partnership themes, but that is a palace association, not a spouse personality diagnosis or compatibility list. Career reflection stays equally optional: heavy resource can be framed as a learning-oriented pattern, never a job recommendation.
Jia Zi in a Summer Fire-Heavy Chart
Example B keeps the same Jia Zi day pillar but changes the surroundings to 壬午 year, 丙午 month, and 己巳 hour. Fire now totals 4 and Water 2, so the output and wealth side dominates while resource is comparatively light. The day branch still hides only Gui Water, and no Wood root appears anywhere in the four pillars. Jia remains in Bath at Zi, unchanged because the day pillar itself is identical. What differs is the full chart: the same day pillar sits in a different seasonal and elemental context, which is why identical day pillars never imply identical charts. Traditional reflection might note that strong output can be associated with expression or visibility, but this remains a reading convention, not a personality profile. The Spouse Palace point stands: Gui Resource in Zi is a ten-gods label, not a partner description, and nothing here should guide relationship or career decisions.
Reading the Bath Phase Correctly
Jia at Zi returns Bath in the stem-branch lookup, and the same phase applies to the pillar stem in this position. Bath is sometimes loosely linked to romance because of its name, but that association is not a Peach Blossom star and does not function as a romance forecast. Learning how to use the 12 growth phases helps separate the phase label from popular connotations. The phase describes a relationship between a stem and a branch, not health, biological age, or a prediction. In both examples the day pillar is Jia Zi, so the phase is fixed; the surrounding pillars change the totals but not the lookup itself.
Same Stem, Different Branch and Position
Following the Jia entries at ten-step intervals takes you from Jia Zi to 甲戌 and 甲申, where the stem stays Jia but the branch changes, so the phase and hidden stems change too. Position matters as well: a Jia Zi appearing as a year pillar is not read like the day pillar, because the day pillar carries the Day Master and Spouse Palace associations. Boundary inputs also shift results, since a chart beginning before or after a solar term can place the same date in a different month pillar. Pairing rules matter at the level of each single pillar: Jia Zi is valid because both stem and branch are yang, whereas Jia Chou is not a cycle entry. A claim about two pillars combining is a separate interaction rule, not a test of whether a single pillar is valid. These distinctions keep the reading grounded in observable structure rather than fixed labels.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Jia Wood Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 壬 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 申 | 子 | 子 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Indirect Resource | Indirect Resource | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
癸 Direct Resource (1) | 癸 Direct Resource (1) | 丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 绝 Extinction | 沐浴 Bath | 沐浴 Bath | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 帝旺 Emperor | 沐浴 Bath | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 1, Earth 1.6, Metal 1.5, Water 4.5.
Jia Zi as the Day Pillar
In chart A, the day pillar is 甲子: Yang Wood over Yang Water. The stem is the Day Master, Jia. The branch Zi holds one hidden stem, Gui Yin Water, which is the Direct Resource relative to Jia. So the label "Jia Zi" tells you the day stem, the day branch, and that branch's hidden stem — nothing more about the person.
Zi is the branch where Jia sits in the Bath phase (Mu Yu). That phase comes from the stem-branch lookup, not from a score, health reading, or prediction. It is also not the Peach Blossom star, so Jia Zi by itself is not a romance forecast.
Hidden Stems and What They Are Not
Zi hides only Gui Water. Water is Jia's resource, and a resource is not a root. A hidden root must actually contain Wood, and Zi contains none. In chart A the visible Jia on the day stem does not count as a hidden root either. The element totals show Wood 1, Water 4.5, Fire 1, Earth 1.6, Metal 1.5 — a chart weighted toward Water support, with little Wood to anchor it.
Two Useful Contrasts
- Polarity: Jia is Yang, Zi is Yang, but the hidden Gui is Yin. The visible stem and branch share yang polarity; hidden Gui has yin polarity.
- Resource vs root: The month and year stems are both Ren, Indirect Resource, and the month branch Zi repeats the Direct Resource. Strong Water support surrounds Jia, yet no position supplies a Wood root.
The day branch is traditionally the Spouse Palace, but Gui Resource sitting there is not a spouse personality diagnosis. Traditional reflection on learning, relationships, or work may be offered as optional reading, never as a personal profile, a compatible-spouse list, or a job recommendation.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 子 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Indirect Resource | Eating God | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
癸 Direct Resource (1) | 丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 死 Death | 死 Death | 沐浴 Bath | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 沐浴 Bath | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 4, Earth 2.3, Metal 0.5, Water 2.
Chart B: Jia Zi in a Fire-Heavy Setting
Chart B keeps the same day pillar, 甲子, but changes the year and month pillars to 壬午 and 丙午. The day master remains Jia (Yang Wood), and the day branch 子 still hides only Gui (Yin Water), a Direct Resource relative to Jia. The day master phase at 子 is still Bath under the convention used here. What changes is the surrounding field: fire now totals 4, water 2, earth 2.3, metal 0.5, and wood 1. The month stem 丙 is Eating God, and both 午 branches hide 丁 Hurting Officer and 己 Direct Wealth.
Compared with chart A, the year branch shifts from 申 to 午, and the month pillar shifts from 壬子 to 丙午. Chart A leaned heavily toward water at 4.5, with two 壬 Indirect Resource stems feeding Jia. Chart B replaces that winter water support with summer fire and output. The visible Jia day stem is the Day Master itself, not a hidden Wood root, and neither example shows hidden Wood in the branches. Water remains resource, not root.
The day branch is traditionally called the Spouse Palace, but the Gui Resource hidden in 子 is not a spouse personality diagnosis. Any personality, learning, relationship, or career theme here is optional traditional reflection, not a profile, compatibility list, or job recommendation. For a fuller method, see how to read a bazi chart.
Reader Check
- Confirm the day pillar is 甲子 before comparing.
- List all four pillars, not just the day pillar.
- Count visible and hidden elements separately.
- Check whether any hidden stem is actually Wood.
- Note the phase from the stem-branch lookup, not as a score.
Actionable check: if two charts share 甲子 but differ elsewhere, treat them as different full charts, not the same reading.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
