Ren Chen Day Pillar: Seven Killings, Output and a Hidden Water Root

一 What it is

The Ren Chen Day Pillar is a day pillar whose top stem is Ren Yang Water and whose bottom branch is Chen Yang Earth, holding hidden Wu Seven Killings, Yi Hurting Officer, and Gui Rob Wealth. A concrete everyday analogy is a deep well sunk through packed clay: the well is the Ren water, the clay is the Chen earth, and the small seep at the bottom is hidden Gui, a same-element water root that keeps the well from being a dry shaft. What distinguishes this topic is that the water root is Gui, not Ren. Ren needs hidden Water (Ren or Gui) for roots, and here the root is same-element rather than same-stem. Hidden Ren would be a same-stem root; hidden Gui is not. Metal is Resource, while Earth is the Officer category, never Resource and never a water root. Chen is traditionally a Water storage branch, but that storage alone does not prove wealth release, and Ren at Chen is Grave symbolism, not death. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores, and a hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Read This in the Calculator

Open your Four Pillars grid and locate the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem — here, Ren Yang Water. The bottom character is the branch, Chen. The small characters beside Chen are its hidden stems: Wu, Yi, and Gui. The grid displays hidden stems as small characters, not hidden Ten God labels, and it has no dedicated growth-phase row. For phase lookups, use the article tables or the full overview instead. Element balance totals are weighted bookkeeping values, not a phase or a strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use the calculator with an accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule. To see how these placements shift between charts, calculate your chart and compare the Day column directly.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

How to Read the Ren Chen Day Pillar Step by Step

Begin with the layer of the cycle index. Ren is a yang stem, so its growth phases run forward through the twelve-stage sequence. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase match because the reference stem is identical there. For Ren Chen, both read Grave. Keep that as phase symbolism only: it describes where the stem sits in the cycle, not a biological or life-event prediction. The index number 29 is a lookup coordinate, not a strength score.

Next, separate stem element and polarity from hidden Ten Gods. Ren is Yang Water. In the day branch, Wu is Yang Earth and therefore Seven Killings; Yi is Yin Wood and therefore Hurting Officer; Gui is Yin Water and therefore Rob Wealth. A hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores, so do not read them as climate or power ratings. Ren needs hidden Water, Ren or Gui, for a root. Gui is same-element Water but not same-stem; hidden Ren would be same-stem. Metal is Resource for Ren, while Earth is the Officer category, never Resource and never a Water root.

Then check roots and Resource distinctly across the whole chart. In example A, the year and month are Xin Wei and Xin Chou, giving Direct Resource stems and hidden Gui in Chou. In example B, the year and month are Ren Wu and Ding Wei, giving a visible Friend stem and Direct Wealth instead. The day and hour pillars stay Ren Chen and Yi Si, so the real contrast sits in the year and month. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots, so the Ren Friend in B does not replace the hidden Gui inside Chen. For the branch itself, see this Chen Dragon Earthly Branch reference.

Finally, read the complete chart before judging the day pillar. The day branch supplies Seven Killings, Hurting Officer, and a hidden Water root, but the surrounding stems and branches decide how those placements sit. Compare A and B position by position: A leans on Xin Resource and hidden Gui, while B shows Ren Friend and Ding Direct Wealth with far less Metal. Chen remains Water storage in both, but no clash-based wealth-release claim follows from that alone. The two tables below record only the day-branch hidden stems and the day pillar's cycle coordinate and phase.

To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.

乙 Hurting Officer 0.5
癸 Rob Wealth 0.3

四 When the reading changes

When the Month Is Chou and Two Xin Resources Sit Above

Chart A places Chou in the month with Xin Direct Resource on both the year and month stems. That is a Metal Resource presence, and Resource is not a Water root: Xin produces Ren rather than standing in for it. The only hidden Water in the chart is Gui Rob Wealth inside Chou at 0.5 and Gui Rob Wealth inside Chen at 0.3, both same-element roots rather than same-stem roots, since neither is Ren. The visible Xin stems do not become hidden roots simply by being present. Chen also holds Wu Seven Killings at 1 and Yi Hurting Officer at 0.5, so the Day Pillar carries Officer and Output alongside that small Water root. Reading the Day Master phase at Chen as Grave is symbolic phase language, not a statement about health or lifespan. For how the forward phases are arranged for a yang stem, the guide on how to use the 12 growth phases explains the sequence. The practical contrast in A is visible Resource alongside Gui roots in Chou and Chen.

When the Year Is Ren Wu and the Month Is Ding Wei

Chart B swaps the year and month pillars: Ren Wu and Ding Wei replace Xin Wei and Xin Chou, while the day and hour pillars stay identical, so Ren Chen and Yi Si are unchanged. The year stem Ren Friend is a visible peer, but a visible peer is not itself a hidden root; the hidden Water in B remains only Gui Rob Wealth in Chen at 0.3. What B adds is Ding Direct Wealth on the month stem and Ding Direct Wealth hidden in Wu at 1, plus Ji Direct Officer hidden in Wu at 0.5 and Ji Direct Officer hidden in Wei at 1. Earth here is the Officer category, never Resource and never a Water root. The Day Master phase at Chen stays Grave in both charts because the day pillar did not change. The useful contrast is that B leans toward Wealth and Officer visibility while A leans toward Resource visibility, and neither chart turns Earth into a substitute for Water.

Reading the Hidden Gui Root Without Overclaiming

Chen is traditionally described as a Water storage branch, and the stored Water here is Gui Rob Wealth at 0.3. That is a real hidden root for Ren, but it is same-element rather than same-stem, so it should not be described as if Ren itself were buried in Chen. The 1, 0.5 and 0.3 figures are the calculator's bookkeeping weights, not seasonal strength scores; they tell you what is present and in what proportion, not how strong the chart is in a given month. The fixed 0.3 weight identifies a listed hidden-stem position; it cannot by itself measure seasonal root strength or determine a partnership outcome. The same limit applies to career reflection: Wu Seven Killings and Yi Hurting Officer in Chen describe categories of pressure and output, not a predicted job or income. Where a reading needs visible support, look at the other pillars rather than stretching the hidden Gui beyond what it is.

Grave Phase at the Day Position and What It Does Not Mean

At the day position the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase match, both reading Grave, because the reference stem is identical there. Ren's phases run forward as a yang stem, so the sequence advances rather than reverses, but the phase name is symbolic shorthand and not a biological or life-event prediction. Calling Chen a Grave for Ren does not mean the Day Master is dead, weak in a medical sense, or destined for a particular outcome; it describes where the day pillar sits in the forward cycle. In both A and B the day pillar is the same, so this phase reading does not distinguish them. What distinguishes them is the year and month: A shows Xin Direct Resource twice with Chou, while B shows Ren Friend and Ding Direct Wealth with Wu and Wei. Keep the Grave label in its symbolic place and let the actual stems, branches and hidden stems carry the reading.

Chart A places 辛未 in the year, 辛丑 in the month, 壬辰 in the day, and 乙巳 in the hour. The day pillar is the pair in the Day column of the grid: 壬 on top as Day Master, 辰 below as its branch, with the small hidden-stem characters inside 辰. Those hidden stems are 戊 (Seven Killings, weight 1), 乙 (Hurting Officer, weight .5), and 癸 (Rob Wealth, weight .3).

Read the day position first. Because the reference stem there is 壬 itself, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase both read 墓, Grave. That match is structural, not a prediction about death, health, or any life event.

Now the contents of 辰. 戊 is the heaviest hidden stem and carries the Seven Killings label. 乙 is Hurting Officer, an Output category. 癸 is Rob Wealth and the only hidden Water in the pillar. For 壬, roots must be Water: hidden 壬 would be a same-stem root, hidden 癸 a same-element root. 癸 qualifies; 戊 and 乙 do not. Metal is Resource, a separate category that produces Water without rooting it.

Two contrasts sharpen this. First, the year and month stems are both 辛, Direct Resource — visible Metal above, not Water, so they do not root 壬 inside 辰. Second, the hour stem 乙 is Hurting Officer, matching the hidden 乙 in 辰, while the hour branch 巳 hides 丙, 庚, and 戊 — no Water at all. Hidden Water roots appear in both Chou and Chen.

What cannot follow from the label: "辰 stores Water" is a traditional branch description, not a clash-based wealth-release claim. Seven Killings, Output, and Rob Wealth name categories and positions; they do not by themselves forecast career, money, or relationships.

Weighted element totals: Wood 1.8, Fire 3.5, Earth 2.8, Metal 0.5, Water 2.3.

Ren Yang Water sits above Chen Yang Earth. Inside Chen, Wu Seven Killings carries weight 1, Yi Hurting Officer 0.5, and Gui Rob Wealth 0.3. Gui is same-element Water, so it roots Ren without being a same-stem root; hidden Ren would be the same-stem kind. Wu Earth belongs to the Officer category, not Resource, and Metal Resource stays distinct. Chen is traditionally a Water storage branch, yet that storage alone does not justify a clash-based wealth-release claim. Ren at Chen is Grave symbolism, not death.

Chart A: Xin Wei, Xin Chou, Ren Chen, Yi Si. Both Xin stems are Direct Resource, and Chou hides Gui Rob Wealth. Chart B: Ren Wu, Ding Wei, Ren Chen, Yi Si. The year and month pillars change; day and hour stay identical. B gains a visible Ren Friend in the year and Ding Direct Wealth in the month, while A's double Direct Resource disappears. B's hidden Gui in Chen remains the same-element root, and its visible Ren is a peer, not itself a hidden root.

Ren's phases run forward. At the day position the Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase both read Grave because the reference stem is identical there. Treat this as symbolic phase language, not a biological or life-event prediction. The 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores, and a hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs.

To check your own chart, locate Ren's day branch, list its hidden stems with their Ten Gods, then ask whether any hidden Ren or Gui appears. Compare that root with visible peers, and read each surrounding pillar from its own facts rather than assuming A and B share a pattern. For a related branch study, see the Geng Chen Day Pillar.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.

Calculate your chart and compare the Day column, hidden stems and the other pillars.
