一What Seven Killings actually is
Seven Killings is the same-polarity element that controls your Day Master, and of the two control gods in Bazi, this is the harshest one. Your Day Master is the day-pillar stem that represents you in a Four Pillars chart. Classical texts treat Seven Killings not as a bad object but as a force that must be handled. Di Tian Sui and Zi Ping Zhen Quan treat it as a star that must be controlled or transformed to be useful, and a controlled Seven Killings is read as a mark of capable, decisive people. The common misreading is simpler: Seven Killings means disaster. That misreading treats the name as a verdict. The mechanism is pressure, and pressure is shaped by the chart around it. Classical Bazi uses five configurations to describe that shape, and this article will show you how to work out which one appears in a chart. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Two questions create the ten gods
Every stem in a chart that is not your Day Master gets its label from two questions.
First: what does it do to your Day Master? It is the same element; it produces your Day Master; your Day Master produces it; your Day Master controls it; or it controls your Day Master.
Second: is its polarity the same as your Day Master, or opposite? Polarity here means yin/yang, not good or bad.
Those two questions give the ten gods.
| Relation to the Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Friend | Rob Wealth |
| Produces the Day Master | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| Day Master produces it | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| Day Master controls it | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Controls the Day Master | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
Seven Killings is the bottom row, same-polarity column. Direct Officer is the opposite-polarity control star.
The control cycle runs Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. So for a Wood Day Master, the controlling element is Metal. For an Earth Day Master, the controlling element is Wood.
Each element has two stems: one yin and one yang. One of those has the same polarity as your Day Master, and one has the opposite. The same-polarity controller is Seven Killings.
What “seven” means
The name also comes from counting stems. Take Jia Wood. Jia is Yang Wood, its controlling element is Metal, and the same-polarity Metal stem is Geng. Count from Jia: Jia is 1, Yi is 2, Bing is 3, Ding is 4, Wu is 5, Ji is 6, Geng is 7. Geng is the seventh stem from Jia. That is the “seven” in Seven Killings.
The “killings” part refers to the harsh side of control. Of the two control gods, Seven Killings is the harsh one, while Direct Officer is the gentler opposite-polarity version.
The full pairing for each Day Master:
| Day Master | Seven Killings stem |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Geng 庚 |
| Yi 乙 | Xin 辛 |
| Bing 丙 | Ren 壬 |
| Ding 丁 | Gui 癸 |
| Wu 戊 | Jia 甲 |
| Ji 己 | Yi 乙 |
| Geng 庚 | Bing 丙 |
| Xin 辛 | Ding 丁 |
| Ren 壬 | Wu 戊 |
| Gui 癸 | Ji 己 |
If you know your Day Master, the second column is the stem to recognize as Seven Killings in a chart.
Where Seven Killings sits
Seven Killings can appear in one of the three visible stems other than your Day Master: year, month, or hour. It can also be hidden inside an earthly branch. Each branch holds one to three hidden stems, ranked main qi, middle qi, and residual qi.
When counting Seven Killings in a chart, a visible stem counts as 1.0, a hidden main qi counts as 1.0, a middle qi counts as 0.5, and a residual qi counts as 0.3. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest single position in the chart.
二The five kinds of Seven Killings charts
The same star behaves in five different ways depending on what stands next to it. Seven Killings remains the same relation to the Day Master: the element that controls the Day Master with the same yin/yang polarity. That relation does not change. What changes is how the rest of the chart handles it. Classical Bazi groups those outcomes into five configurations.
1. Seven Killings controlled by Eating God or Hurting Officer
The first configuration is the output-star control. Eating God and Hurting Officer are the two output stars: they are what the Day Master produces. When one of these sits strongly in the chart, it controls the Seven Killings instead of letting the Seven Killings control the Day Master. On a Wood Day Master, for example, Metal is the Killing and Fire is the output, and Fire controls Metal. The attacking force is met by an opposing force.
The mechanism is disciplined pressure. The Day Master is still under pressure, but the chart does not receive it passively. It produces something back. That is why classical texts rate this the calmest and most useful expression of Seven Killings.
In behavior, this shape tends to handle a boss who pushes or a rival who threatens by producing visible work. When a deadline arrives, the response is to plan, write, build, or perform. The asset is execution under pressure. The liability appears when the output star overworks: the same shape can answer before listening, or keep producing after the task is done and annoy the authority figure it should have managed more smoothly.
2. Seven Killings transformed by Resource
The second configuration uses a Resource star. Resource means the star that produces the Day Master: Direct Resource and Indirect Resource both do this. In this shape, the Resource stands between the Seven Killings and the Day Master.
The mechanism is conversion. Seven Killings produces the Resource, and the Resource produces the Day Master. The force of the Killing is therefore not blocked; it is redirected. What would have been an attack becomes nourishment. Classical Bazi calls this pressure transformed into support and learning.
In practice, a person with this shape tends to react to high-pressure situations by studying first. When an authority gives a hard assignment, the internal movement is to read the manual, learn the new tool, ask an experienced colleague, or take a training step before acting. The asset is that pressure makes them more capable over time. The liability is that the process can become endless preparation, especially if the Resource is very strong. When pressure disappears, action can shrink too, because the chart’s main reason for action was the need to absorb something new.
3. Strong Day Master carrying the Seven Killings
The third configuration appears when Seven Killings is present but the Day Master has enough support to absorb it directly. The support comes from two sources: Friend or Rob Wealth stems, which are the same element as the Day Master, and Resource stems, which produce the Day Master. When those are strong enough, the Killings is no longer an attacker. It becomes a load that the Day Master can carry.
The mechanism is matching. Pressure is only destructive when it exceeds the capacity of the structure receiving it. Here the structure is sturdy. Seven Killings then reads as the kind of force that produces drive, authority, and the endurance to handle competition.
In a working life, this shape tends to move toward challenging assignments rather than away from them. A person with this chart is often most settled when they hold real responsibility. When an organization is unstable, they tend to take charge or at least act as if someone must. The asset is that pressure does not make them collapse. The liability is that without enough pressure, they may manufacture their own: taking on extra projects, competing where there is no real rival, or turning a calm environment into a contest.
4. Heavy Seven Killings, weak Day Master
The fourth configuration is the one classical texts warn about. The Seven Killings is heavy, and the Day Master cannot bear it. There is not enough Friend, Rob Wealth, or Resource support, and there is no adequate Eating God or Hurting Officer to control the Killings. The pressure has no exit and no converter.
The mechanism is direct impact. Because nothing sits between the Killing and the Day Master, the full force lands on the Day Master. Classical Bazi describes this as pressure felt as stress, a tendency toward strain, and a life in which the person feels pushed around. None of that is a fate; it is the mechanical result of an unsupported chart shape.
In behavior, this shape tends to respond to authority with resentment that is not expressed, or with compliance followed by delayed resistance. When several demands land at once, the first impulse is to avoid blame rather than to complete the task. The person can be competent, but under pressure their competence is the first thing they doubt. The missing element is not willpower; it is one of the two neighbours above, either an output star to discipline the Killing or a Resource to convert it.
5. Officer and Killings mixed
The fifth configuration involves a second controlling star. Direct Officer controls the Day Master with the opposite polarity. It is the gentler form of control. When Direct Officer and Seven Killings are both visible in the year, month, or hour stems, the chart has two authorities over the Day Master at once.
The mechanism is divided command. The two controlling stars are the same element but opposite in polarity. In practical terms, one says “obey in this way” and the other says “obey in another way.” Classical Bazi calls this competing authorities and unclear direction. A person with this mixed shape tends to face situations where there is no single clear line of command: two managers give conflicting instructions, two systems of rules apply at once.
The classical prescription is to remove one and keep one. That does not mean a chart can be edited; it means the resolution comes from making one authority final. Once the competing second signal is ignored, decisiveness tends to return. The liability of this shape is hesitation born from divided loyalty. The asset, once the mixed signal is simplified, is a person who understands both the gentle and the harsh side of authority and can choose which one to apply.
A chart with no Seven Killings at all has no configuration because the pressure theme is absent. In the classical reading, the other ten gods carry the chart instead.

Checking your own Seven Killings shape takes four steps; the free calculator supplies the numbers. The point of the check is not to decide whether Seven Killings is “good” or “bad.” The point is to see which of the five configurations surrounds it, because the same star reads differently in each. The method is easier to compare with Direct Wealth (正财) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
- Find your Day Master. The Day Master is the stem sitting above the day branch in your four-pillar chart. It is the “you” that all ten-god labels are measured against.
- Look up your Seven Killings from your Day Master. Seven Killings is the controlling element of the same polarity, so the pairing is exact.
| Day Master | Seven Killings |
|---|---|
| Jia Wood | Geng Metal |
| Yi Wood | Xin Metal |
| Bing Fire | Ren Water |
| Ding Fire | Gui Water |
| Wu Earth | Jia Wood |
| Ji Earth | Yi Wood |
| Geng Metal | Bing Fire |
| Xin Metal | Ding Fire |
| Ren Water | Wu Earth |
| Gui Water | Ji Earth |
- Count where that stem sits. Look first at the visible stems of the year, month, and hour. Your Day Master’s own stem is not counted, because Seven Killings is defined as a stem other than the Day Master. Then check the four branches. Each branch hides one to three stems: its main qi, middle qi, and residual qi. The month branch is read first, because its main qi is the strongest position in the chart. The calculator uses the same weights you would use by hand: a visible stem counts 1.0, a hidden main qi counts 1.0, a hidden middle qi counts 0.5, and a hidden residual qi counts 0.3. If the total is zero, there is no Seven Killings configuration to classify.
- Look at what stands beside the Seven Killings. Ask which force is managing it. An Eating God or Hurting Officer can control it. A Resource can transform it into support. Friends and Rob Wealth can strengthen the Day Master so it can carry the pressure directly. A Direct Officer can appear alongside it and split the authority theme. Match what the numbers show against the five configurations above. The calculator also reports whether your Day Master is strong or weak; this article does not decide that for you. Use the calculator’s strength reading as part of the matching step.
Chart A: Seven Killings at 3.0 with thin support
Chart A is the shape called heavy Killings and weak Day Master.
Chart A has a Jia Wood Day Master, and its month stem and hour stem are both Geng Metal. The month branch, Shen, also has Geng as its main qi. Those three positions give Seven Killings a weighted total of 3.0, the heaviest theme on the chart.
The Day Master’s support is thin. A hidden Gui Resource totals 1.3, and a hidden Yi Rob Wealth totals 0.5. There is no visible Friend or Resource in the open stems. The only output star is a hidden Ding Hurting Officer at 1.0. So there is some output control present, but it is not large enough to absorb a 3.0 Killing pressure. This is the configuration the classical texts warn about: the Killings outweigh what the Day Master can lean on, and pressure is felt as being pushed around rather than as usable authority.
Chart B: Seven Killings at 1.0 with output and support around it
Chart B shows the controlled-Killings shape: one visible Seven Killings, but it is outnumbered and disciplined.
Chart B also has a Jia Wood Day Master. This time there is only one Geng stem, in the hour stem, so Seven Killings totals 1.0. The Yin branch in the month pillar gives the Day Master a Jia Wood root; total Friend is 2.0. The two Zi branches hold Gui Water, giving Direct Resource 2.0. The Eating God total is 1.5, from Bing in the month stem plus a hidden Bing inside Yin. So Seven Killings is present but faced with a rooted Day Master, strong Resource support, and a visible Fire output star that can control the Metal Killing. This is the shape of configurations 1 and 3 together: the output star controls the Killings, and the Day Master has enough support to carry the remainder.
The contrast with Chart A is clear. Both charts have a Jia Wood Day Master and a visible Geng. But Chart A has 3.0 of Seven Killings against roughly thin hidden support, while Chart B has 1.0 of Seven Killings against 2.0 Friend, 2.0 Direct Resource, and 1.5 Eating God. Presence alone does not define the configuration; weight and surrounding support do.
Chart C: No Seven Killings at all
Chart C has no Geng anywhere, so none of the five Seven Killings configurations forms.
Chart C also has a Jia Wood Day Master, but its hour stem is Yi Rob Wealth, not Geng. There is no Geng in any visible stem and no Geng hidden in any branch. The only control star in the entire chart is a residual Xin Direct Officer at 0.3, inside the Chou branch. Xin is the opposite-polarity control star, not Seven Killings, so it does not create the Officer-and-Killings mixed configuration on its own.
The table for Chart C shows the chart’s main themes: Direct Resource 2.5, Friend 2.0, Eating God 1.5, Rob Wealth 1.0, and Direct Wealth 1.0. The pressure theme is simply absent. As the taxonomy states, a chart with no Seven Killings is not a configuration; it just means other gods carry the chart.
The difference between the three examples is structural. Chart A and Chart B both have Seven Killings, but Chart A’s Seven Killings is the biggest number in the chart and support is thin, while Chart B’s Seven Killings is small relative to support and output. Chart C has no Seven Killings at all, so the conversation does not even begin with the five configurations.
These three charts are structural illustrations, not anyone’s fate. Your own check ends when you can say which shape a chart shows; it does not end in a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The star does not change; what the chart places next to it does. No act of will removes a Seven Killings from a chart, and none is needed. The five classical configurations are the star plus its surroundings, and each set of surroundings changes how the same pressure feels. Run the check in the previous section first. When your count points to one of these five shapes, the actions below are the ones that shape tends to reward. This point connects directly with Direct Officer (正官) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Seven Killings controlled by Eating God or Hurting Officer
This configuration sits an output star on the Killings and lets it do the disciplining. Classical texts rate it the best-behaved form because the chart answers pressure with a visible product.
- When a deadline, exam, or rival appears, make the smallest deliverable within the first hour. Write the draft, build the prototype, book the rehearsal. Thinking alone does not use this shape; output does.
- Name the finish line before you start, and if the assignment comes without one, ask for it. This shape can keep refining past the point anyone asked for, and an explicit “done” is the boundary it respects.
- If someone challenges your work, answer with better work. A completed thing settles an argument faster than a defensive explanation.
Seven Killings transformed by Resource
In this configuration, the Resource star — the one that produces your Day Master — stands between the Killings and you. The pressure stops arriving as an attack and arrives as something to absorb and learn from.
- Before a hard meeting or test, gather a written framework for it. This shape tends to stay calm when it holds a reference: a checklist, a manual, a marked-up draft.
- Ask what the situation requires you to learn, and do that work before you respond. The conversion runs fastest when the question is framed as knowledge.
- After a stressful encounter, review what you would do differently. The debrief is how this configuration keeps converting pressure into learning instead of storing it.
Strong Day Master carrying the Seven Killings
When the Day Master has enough same-element support — Friends, Rob Wealth, Resource — to bear the Killings directly, the Killings reads as drive and authority rather than attack.
- Ask for a target with the task. An accountable role with a number, a deadline, and the right to decide fits this shape. An advisory role with no stakes tends to feel empty.
- Keep two or three real demands running at once. This configuration is built to carry a load, and a single undemanding task can feel directionless.
- When a group hesitates and no one holds the decision, state it plainly. Decisiveness is the strength of this shape; the discipline comes from stating it after hearing the room, not before.
Heavy Seven Killings, weak Day Master
Here the Killings outweighs what the Day Master can lean on, and no adequate Eating God or Resource manages it. Pressure arrives as stress, strain, and being pushed around.
- Run one front at a time. This configuration tends to manage a single hard deadline, and several simultaneous ones tip it into stress and resentment.
- Arrange support before the pressure lands: ask for help, move a deadline earlier, gather more information. The chart lacks a strong manager, so an external one is worth creating.
- State limits in small, concrete units. “I can do that if this other task moves to next week” works better than a vague complaint about being overloaded, because it converts domination into a negotiable constraint.
Officer and Killings mixed
Here both control gods are present and visible: Direct Officer, the opposite-polarity control, and Seven Killings, the same-polarity control. Classical texts read the pair as competing authorities and prescribe removing one, keeping one.
- For each project, name one decision-maker. If two authorities both have a say, the chart’s confusion simply moves into the workplace.
- When two orders conflict, say so openly. Pointing at the contradiction is the practical version of removing one, keeping one.
- Assign each responsibility to one authority and decline to serve the competing one on that task. Clarity of reporting is the cure for this configuration.
Common misreadings
“Seven Killings means death or disaster.” The name comes from counting: from the Day Master’s stem, the controlling stem of the same polarity is the seventh stem along. “Killings” names the harshest form of control, not a verdict. Classical texts ask which configuration surrounds the star, and they treat the controlled form as a mark of capable, decisive people.
“Seven Killings is bad; Direct Officer is good.” The two are the same control relation, differing only in polarity. The Direct Officer is the gentler expression, but usefulness is set by the configuration. A controlled Seven Killings is the form classical texts rate best-behaved, while an uncontrolled one is the form they warn about.
“A little Killings is useful, so more is better.” The weight only reads as drive when the Day Master can bear it. When Killings outweighs support, the same pressure that produces authority in one chart produces being pushed around in another.
Where this stops
One star describes a tendency; it does not write a biography. Seven Killings is one of ten relations in a chart, defined by two questions and shaped by the stems and branches around it. Strength is a whole-chart judgment, and the free calculator supplies the weighted totals so you can make that check yourself; this article does not decide it for you. The five configurations are shapes of pressure, not predictions. No single god, and no single section, determines where a life goes.
