一 What it is
The Canopy Star (华盖) is a traditional chart label assigned when a branch matches a target selected from the year or day branch. Its image is a quiet study room set apart from a busy house: a place associated with concentrated attention. The image explains the traditional theme; the matching rule tells you where the label appears. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
We focus on the exact English name shown in the "Stars in your chart" section: Canopy. We will show you the precise lookup rules, which branches count as hits, and how the calculator merges duplicate targets. The Canopy Star is not a diagnosis, a guarantee of artistic talent, or a sign of loneliness. It is simply a pattern that some readers find meaningful for reflecting on their own tendencies. Traditional associations include contemplation and concentrated craft, but these are interpretive lenses, not deterministic personality conclusions. A storage branch alone is not automatically a hit; the branch must match the target derived from your year or day basis.
二 Where to find it in your chart
To see this in practice, go to bazi-calculator.org, enter a birth date and time, and inspect the Four Pillars. The bottom character of each Year, Month, Day, and Hour column is the branch. Scroll to the section titled "Stars in your chart." If the Canopy Star is present, you will see the English name Canopy with the glyph 华盖.
The calculator checks both the year branch and the day branch as bases. For each basis, it consults a fixed triad list (explained in HOW). If the target branch appears in any of the four pillar branches, it is counted as a hit. Duplicate targets from year and day bases are merged into one entry. The reference pillar itself can count as a hit. If no branch matches, the Canopy Star is simply not displayed. If the birth hour is unknown, the hour branch is left unassessable, but the other three pillars are still checked.

Hit positions: Day 辰
Read the basis first, then locate the named branches in Four Pillars.
三 How to read it
The lookup uses four triads, each tied to a "storage" branch. For a basis branch, find its triad, then note the target: The method is easier to compare with Yi Ma (驿马): the Travelling Horse Star and Where to Find It.
- 子辰申 (Zi, Chen, Shen) → target 辰 (Chen)
- 丑巳酉 (Chou, Si, You) → target 丑 (Chou)
- 寅午戌 (Yin, Wu, Xu) → target 戌 (Xu)
- 卯未亥 (Mao, Wei, Hai) → target 未 (Wei)
The basis is your year branch OR your day branch. For example, if your year branch is Shen (申), the target is Chen (辰). If any of the four pillar branches is Chen, you have a Canopy hit. The same logic applies if your day branch is the basis.
Why does this matter? The target branch is called a storage seat because, in the traditional Earthly Branch system, these four branches are where the Five Elements' energy is said to be stored or hidden. The Canopy Star is thus associated with introspection and a tendency to withdraw into mental or creative pursuits. However, this is a traditional interpretation, not a measured fact.
Positional context matters. A Canopy in the Year pillar may suggest a family or early-life influence; in the Hour pillar, it may point to later years or projects. But the calculator does not assign different weights to different positions. It simply reports the hit. The star does not automatically transform your chart, change any weighted totals, or override other patterns. It is one label among many.
We must also clarify: a storage branch (like Chen) appearing in your chart is not automatically a Canopy hit. The branch must match the target derived from your year or day basis. The calculator does this merging for you, but you can verify it manually using the table above.
A Practical Reading Sequence After the Hit Appears
Once the Canopy label appears, move from mechanics to context. First, confirm the basis: year branch, day branch, or both. Second, confirm the hit slot. Third, note whether the hit branch is the same branch that generated the target, since a reference pillar matching its own target is a distinct configuration. Fourth, look at the hidden stems inside that branch. Only then bring in the traditional theme of contemplation and concentrated craft.
This order matters because the same label can rest on different chart furniture. A Canopy hit carried by a branch whose hidden stems are mostly resource and output stars reads differently from one carried by wealth or officer stars. The engine reports the hit; the hidden-stem weights describe the company it keeps.
| Year or day branch belongs to | Target branch to locate |

四 When it plays out differently
Different targets from year and day
When year and day belong to different triads, write down both targets before scanning the chart. Chart B supplies Wei from Year Wei and Chen from Day Shen. Wei appears under Year, while Chen is absent, so only the first target produces a hit. This makes a useful test: a target is a branch to search for, not proof that the branch exists. The two Chou branches in Chart B do not qualify merely because Chou is a storage branch. This point connects directly with Jiang Xing (将星): the General Star and How Its Position Is Calculated.
A reference pillar can match its own target
When Day Wei is the basis, the target is Wei, so the Day branch itself is a hit. If Hour Wei is also present, both Day and Hour are marked. Check the two columns individually rather than counting only the Hour occurrence. The year-derived target still needs its own check; being in another triad does not prove it is absent. The result identifies separate positions for a traditional focus theme, not two units of artistic talent or a stronger numerical score.
Both Bases, Same Target
Your year branch is Zi (子) and your day branch is Chen (辰). Both triads target Chen. If your Day branch itself is Chen, you have one hit, not two. The calculator merges duplicates. This is a mechanical rule. Interpretively, some traditions see this as a stronger emphasis, but the calculator does not double-count or alter any totals.
No Hit
Your year branch is Yin (寅) and your day branch is Mao (卯). The targets are Xu (戌) and Wei (未). If none of your four branches are Xu or Wei, no Canopy Star is displayed. This is a clean negative result. It means the pattern is absent, not that you lack focus or creativity.
Comparing Observable Configurations
Chart A and Chart B differ observably. In Chart A, year Shen and day Chen both resolve to Chen, and the only Chen is the Day branch itself: a self-match on the day. In Chart B, year Wei resolves to Wei and day Shen resolves to Chen; Wei appears under Year, Chen is absent, and the two Chou branches are non-hits. One chart concentrates its target on a single self-matching slot; the other splits its targets and lands only one.
A third configuration is the double-slot case: if Day Wei is the basis and Hour Wei is also present, both Day and Hour are marked. This is not a stronger score, just two positions carrying the same branch. A fourth is the clean negative, where neither target appears.
Position Read Cautiously Against Non-Star Hidden Stems
A Year-pillar hit and a Day-pillar hit are not interchangeable in traditional reading, but the difference is interpretive, not mechanical. The engine does not weight positions. A practical comparison is to set the Canopy branch beside a non-star branch and ask which carries more ten-god weight. In Chart B, the Year Wei hit sits alongside two Chou non-hits, and those Chou branches carry their own hidden stems and weights. The Canopy label does not raise or lower those weights.
五 Worked chart examples
These teaching examples were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or claim life events. Tables and weights are generated by code using the calculator’s rules.

Canopy: Day 辰. Basis: triad of year Shen and day Chen.
Chart A has the following Four Pillars: Year 庚申, Month 丁亥, Day 甲辰, Hour 己巳. The day master is Jia Wood (甲). We focus only on the Canopy Star.
Step-by-step lookup:
- Year branch is Shen (申). Find Shen in the triad list: 子辰申. Target is Chen (辰).
- Day branch is Chen (辰). Find Chen in the triad list: 子辰申. Target is Chen (辰).
- Both bases point to the same target: Chen (辰).
- Scan the four branches: Shen (Year), Hai (Month), Chen (Day), Si (Hour). The Day branch is Chen.
- This is a hit. The calculator merges the duplicate target into one entry.
The "Stars in your chart" section will show Canopy with a hit on the Day pillar. The traditional meaning listed is "Aloof, focused, drawn to things of the mind." This is an interpretive association, not a measurement. The calculator does not change any ten-god weights or five-element totals because of this hit. The Day Master stem (Jia) is excluded from weighted ten-god totals, but its element remains in the engine's five-element totals.
For Chart A, the practical comparison is between the Day Chen hit and the other three branches. Year Shen and Day Chen both target Chen, so the label rests on a single merged entry with one slot. The Day branch is the reference pillar matching its own target: the self-match configuration. Month Hai and Hour Si are non-hits for this star, but they still carry hidden stems and weights that shape the chart's ten-god texture.
Because the day master is Jia Wood, the hidden stems inside Chen (Wu, Yi, Gui) receive ten-god labels relative to Jia. Those labels would change if the day master changed, but the Canopy lookup would not. This shows the star is a branch-level pattern while ten-god sums are stem-relative. The Canopy hit adds no weight to any category and removes none.
Compared with Chart B, Chart A's hit is a self-match on the day, while Chart B's is a year-basis match on the year. Both are single-slot results, neither stronger in the engine's terms, and neither changes the weighted totals already reported.
| Position | year | month | day | hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 己 | 丁 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 未 | 丑 | 申 | 丑 |
| Ten god | Direct Wealth | Hurting Officer | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 己 Direct Wealth (1) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.5) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding the Day Master stem): Direct Wealth 4.0; Hurting Officer 1.5; Rob Wealth 1.3; Direct Resource 1.0; Direct Officer 0.6; Seven Killings 1.0; Indirect Resource 0.5; Indirect Wealth 0.3.
Canopy: Year 未. Basis: triad of year Wei and day Shen.
Chart B has the following Four Pillars: Year 己未, Month 丁丑, Day 甲申, Hour 乙丑. The day master is Jia Wood (甲). We focus only on the Canopy Star.
Step-by-step lookup:
- Year branch is Wei (未). Find Wei in the triad list: 卯未亥. Target is Wei (未).
- Day branch is Shen (申). Find Shen in the triad list: 子辰申. Target is Chen (辰).
- The two bases point to different targets: Wei (未) and Chen (辰).
- Scan the four branches: Wei (Year), Chou (Month), Shen (Day), Chou (Hour). The Year branch is Wei.
- Wei matches the year-basis target. Chen does not appear in any branch, so the day-basis target is not a hit.
The calculator will show Canopy with a hit on the Year pillar. The traditional meaning is the same as Chart A: "Aloof, focused, drawn to things of the mind." The Month and Hour branches are both Chou, but Chou is not a target for either basis, so it does not create a hit. The calculator does not infer strength or weakness from raw totals, and this star does not alter any weighted sums. This is a calendar-engine-generated teaching example, not a person or client story.
For Chart B, the practical comparison is between the Year Wei hit and the two Chou branches that do not qualify. Year Wei is both basis and hit slot: a self-match on the year. Day Shen targets Chen, and Chen is absent, so the day-basis target produces nothing. The two Chou branches are storage branches, but Chou is not a target for either basis, so they remain non-hits.
The day master is Jia Wood, so the hidden stems in Wei (Ji, Ding, Yi) and Chou (Ji, Gui, Xin) receive ten-god labels relative to Jia. Changing the day master would relabel those stems but would not alter the branch lookup: Wei would still be the year-basis target, Chen the day-basis target, and Chou still a non-hit. The Canopy label sits on the Year slot and does not touch the weights attached to either Chou branch.
Set beside Chart A, Chart B shows the split-target case: two bases, two targets, one hit. Chart A shows the merged-target case: two bases, one target, one hit. Both are single-slot results and both leave the engine's weighted sums unchanged. The difference is which slot carries the label and which basis produced it, not any measured strength.
六 How common is this configuration?
Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations in the enumeration used here, 华盖 appears in 67.5154% (350,000 combinations). A chart is counted once if it contains at least one match.
This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people and not the frequency in a birth registry. We enumerate 60 year pillars, 12 solar-month slots, 60 day pillars and 12 hour slots, with the paired stem rules respected. Calendar duration, birth timing and unknown hours are not population-weighted.
The lookup checks both the year and day branch, merges their target branches, and scans all four positions, including the reference pillars themselves. This inclusive convention matters: a different lookup convention can produce a different rate. None of these labels establishes a life outcome.
