一 What it is
What Are Luck Pillars?
Think of a long train journey. Your birth chart is the carriage you board, fixed at departure. Luck Pillars are the ten-year stretches of track the train rolls through afterward, each with its own scenery. In Bazi, Luck Pillars (Da Yun) are the calculator’s sequence of ten-year stem-branch periods, each with a calculated start age and direction.
The table is a calendar structure, not a promise about what will happen in a decade. A visible label, such as a start age, a forward or reverse direction, or a single stem-branch card with its age and year range, is a lookup result. Interpretation comes later, when those labels are read alongside the Four Pillars and other factors.
What can Luck Pillars not prove? They cannot guarantee money, career, health, relationships, or any specific event. A stem-branch card is a label, not a verdict. Direction sets the sequence displayed, and the start age is calculated from the selected calendar method. Year and Month use China time; Day and Hour use true solar time. If the hour is unknown, no Hour Pillar is invented.
Read the table as a timeline: first the start age shown above the Luck Pillars row, then each ten-year card in order. Treat every label as vocabulary for later study, never as a forecast.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Finding the Luck Pillars Section
Scroll past the Four Pillars chart until you reach the Luck Pillars panel. The first number shown above the row is the start age, calculated from the selected calendar method. Beside it, the direction tells you whether the sequence runs forward or reverse, which sets the order of the cards displayed.
Each Luck Pillar card shows one stem-branch pair with its age and year range, forming a ten-year calendar label rather than a promise about what a decade will bring. Read the cards left to right to follow the sequence. The card matching your present age is highlighted as the current card, and beneath it sits the annual-pillar list, one entry per year inside that decade.
If your birth time is unknown, no Hour Pillar is produced, and that can affect the calculated sequence. Treat the whole table as structure, not prediction.
- Start age: the first age above the row
- Direction: forward or reverse, setting card order
- Ten-year cards: stem, branch, age range, year range
- Highlighted card: the period containing your current age
- Annual list: the years inside that period
To see how these labels connect with the Ten Gods and the Year Pillar, compare the cards with your natal chart. Ready to calculate your chart?
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |

| Branch | 午 | 巳 | 卯 | 寅 |
三 How to read it
How to Read Luck Pillars Step by Step
Begin with the chart itself. Record the four natal pillars — year, month, day and hour — exactly as the calculator displays them, including each stem, branch and hidden stem. These four Four Pillars are the fixed reference point; every later cycle is read against them, so copy them accurately before looking at any moving part.
Next, note the calculated start age shown above the Luck Pillars row. This figure comes from the selected calendar method, and it tells you the age at which the first ten-year period begins. Alongside it, record the direction: forward or reverse. Direction sets the sequence displayed, so the same natal chart can produce a different order of cards depending on this setting.
Then list the Luck Pillars themselves in order. Each card is one stem-branch pair with an age range and a year range, and each is simply a ten-year calendar label. For example, a chart might show a first pillar beginning at age 9 and running to age 18, followed by the next card from 19 to 28. Mark which card contains the present year, and note any annual label attached to that year. Treat all of this as calculated structure: ages, years and stem-branch names.
Only after the calendar facts are recorded should you add traditional interpretation. Here the vocabulary of the Ten Gods may be applied to the stems and branches, using the calculator’s stated conventions. Hidden-stem weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 follow this calculator’s list-order convention, and raw five-element totals are not a strength verdict. The visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals.
Keep the two layers separate in your notes:
- Calculated facts: the four natal pillars, start age, direction, each ten-year card, and the annual label.
- Interpretive layer: traditional labels such as Ten Gods, which describe relationships between stems and branches rather than outcomes.
If the birth time is unknown, no Hour Pillar is invented, and the procedure stops there. Calendar boundaries matter too: year and month use China time, while day and hour use true solar time. Follow this order each time and your reading stays repeatable.
| Observable label | Members or basis | Bounded reading |
|---|---|---|
| Start age | first age shown above the Luck Pillars row | calculated from the selected calendar method |
| Direction | forward or reverse | sets the sequence displayed |
| Luck Pillar | one stem-branch card and its age/year range | a ten-year calendar label |
四 When the reading changes
Repeated labels across pillars and Luck Pillars
A label can appear more than once without multiplying its meaning. In the first sample chart, the Ten Gods list shows Hurting Officer on the year stem and Eating God on the month stem, while the hidden stems add further labels such as 偏印, 比肩, 正印, 伤官, 劫财, 七杀, 正官 and 正印. Check the visible stems first, then the hidden stems, and note where a label repeats. Repetition tells you the label is present in several positions; it does not tell you how strongly it will act, and it does not forecast an event. The same caution applies to the Year Pillar, where a visible stem label and its hidden companions sit in a fixed position.
Hidden-only versus visible occurrence
Some labels appear only inside a branch. In the first sample, the day branch 卯 hides 乙, listed as 七杀, and no 七杀 appears on any visible stem. That is a hidden-only occurrence. By contrast, 庚 on the year stem is visible as Hurting Officer. A concrete check is to scan the four visible stems, then scan each branch’s hidden list, and mark which labels occur in only one layer. Hidden-only presence is a structural note about where the label sits, not a claim that its effects are weaker or delayed. Visible occurrence is likewise a placement fact, not a promise of prominence in life.
Positional differences within the same chart
The same label can sit in different positions and carry different positional context. In the first sample, 正印 appears as a hidden stem in the month branch 巳 and again as a hidden stem in the hour branch 寅, while Direct Resource appears visibly on the hour stem 丙. The year, month, day and hour positions are distinct slots in the chart layout. A practical check is to record the column position beside each label rather than counting labels alone. Position changes which part of the chart structure you are reading; it does not convert a label into a guaranteed outcome, and it does not override the calendar boundary rules that place Year and Month in China time and Day and Hour in true solar time.
Coexistence with another relation or Ten-God category
Labels rarely stand alone. In the first sample, the month branch 巳 hides 丙, 庚 and 戊, listed as 正印, 伤官 and 劫财, so three categories coexist inside one branch. The hour branch 寅 hides 甲, 丙 and 戊, listed as 正官, 正印 and 劫财. A concrete check is to list every hidden stem in a branch and note which Ten-God categories share that space. Coexistence is a description of what the calculator displays together; it is not a verdict that one category dominates or that a combination produces a fixed result. When you compare the two sample charts, the first runs forward from start age 9 with first Luck Pillar 壬午, while the second runs reverse from start age 4 with first Luck Pillar 庚辰. Those are calendar labels, not promises about what a decade will contain.

Calculated Luck Pillar observation(s) — direction forward; start age 9; first Luck Pillar 壬午.
Chart A: Reading the Luck Pillar Sequence
Chart A begins with the Four Pillars 庚午, 辛巳, 己卯 and 丙寅. The visible Day Master is 己, sitting on the day branch 卯. The year stem 庚 carries the Hurting Officer label, the month stem 辛 carries the Eating God label, and the hour stem 丙 carries the Direct Resource label. Hidden stems appear in each branch: 午 holds 丁 and 己; 巳 holds 丙, 庚 and 戊; 卯 holds 乙; 寅 holds 甲, 丙 and 戊.
The calculator places the start age at 9, with the first Luck Pillar beginning in 1998. The direction is forward, so the sequence advances through the sexagenary cycle. The first card is 壬午, covering ages 9 to 18 and years 1998 to 2007. Next comes 癸未, ages 19 to 28 and years 2008 to 2017. The third card is 甲申, ages 29 to 38 and years 2018 to 2027. A fourth card, 乙酉, covers ages 39 to 48 and years 2028 to 2037.
The active Luck Pillar is 甲申, the third card in the sequence. Its stem is 甲 and its branch is 申. Within this ten-year block, the calculator lists yearly stem-branch labels: 戊戌 for 2018, 己亥 for 2019, 庚子 for 2020, 辛丑 for 2021, 壬寅 for 2022, 癸卯 for 2023, 甲辰 for 2024, 乙巳 for 2025, 丙午 for 2026 and 丁未 for 2027. The active year is 2026, age 37, with the label 丙午 and a minor label 癸卯.
These cards are calendar labels, not promises about a decade. The start age, direction and sequence are calculated structures. Reading them alongside the Ten Gods and the Year Pillar helps you see how the chart’s vocabulary is organized, without turning any label into a guaranteed outcome.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 庚 | 辛 | 己 | 丙 |
| Branch | 午 | 巳 | 卯 | 寅 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Eating God | Day Master | Direct Resource |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Indirect Resource (1) 己 Friend (0.5) |
丙 Direct Resource (1) 庚 Hurting Officer (0.5) 戊 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
乙 Seven Killings (1) | 甲 Direct Officer (1) 丙 Direct Resource (0.5) 戊 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
| Void pair | 戌亥 | 申酉 | 申酉 | 戌亥 |
Calculated Luck Pillar observation(s) — direction reverse; start age 4; first Luck Pillar 庚辰.
Reading Chart B’s Luck Pillars
Chart B shares the same four pillars as Chart A: 庚午, 辛巳, 己卯, 丙寅. Its Luck Pillars row begins at age 4, with a reverse direction. The first card is 庚辰, covering ages 4–13 and years 1993–2002. The sequence then runs 己卯 (14–23), 戊寅 (24–33), and 丁丑 (34–43). The active card is 丁丑, covering ages 34–43 and years 2023–2032. Inside it, 2026 is 丙午 at age 37, with minor pillar 己丑.
Chart A uses the same pillars but a forward direction and a start age of 9. Its first card is 壬午 (9–18), followed by 癸未, 甲申, and 乙酉. Its active card is 甲申 (29–38, 2018–2027), and its 2026 entry is also 丙午 at age 37, but with minor pillar 癸卯.
The contrast is structural, not predictive. Direction changes the order of the ten-year cards; start age changes where each card falls. Because the birth data is identical, the four pillars and their Ten Gods labels stay fixed, while the Luck Pillars table shifts. The Year Pillar remains 庚午 in both charts.
To observe this repeatably:
- Confirm the start age and direction above the Luck Pillars row.
- List each stem-branch card with its age and year range.
- Mark the active card containing the current year.
- Read the active year and minor pillar inside that card.
- Compare charts only after these calendar facts are aligned.
The table is a calendar structure. It shows sequence and timing labels, not a promise about what a decade will contain.
六 Base-rate boundary
The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This topic contains several possible labels or thresholds, so a single combined percentage would conceal which exact condition was counted.
Any later frequency must define one exact condition first and report an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people, income outcomes, careers or birth records. The presence of a label is not an event forecast.
