What Are the 12 Growth Phases in Bazi? A Practical Overview

一 What it is

Think of a twelve-step staircase that every Heavenly Stem walks from top to bottom. Each step has a name, and the name changes depending on which Earthly Branch the stem is passing through. That staircase is the Twelve Growth Phases.

The Twelve Growth Phases are a traditional lookup sequence. It maps each Heavenly Stem to one phase name at each Earthly Branch. Because there are ten stems and twelve branches, the sequence repeats and shifts, producing a fixed grid of phase labels. You read a phase by pairing a stem with a branch, then finding the name at that intersection.

The phase names include Birth, Bath, Youth, Adulthood, Emperor, Decline, Sickness, Death, Grave, Extinction, Conception, and Gestation. These words are symbolic phase vocabulary. Death does not mean literal death. Grave does not mean a burial. Extinction does not mean failure or disappearance. Sickness does not mean illness. None of these names predicts an event, a condition, or an outcome.

Treat the phases as a descriptive naming layer, like calling one step of a staircase the landing and another the turn. The label tells you where a stem sits in a repeating cycle. It does not tell you what will happen, who someone is, or how a life will unfold. The boundary is simple: phases are lookup names, not forecasts.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Reading the Twelve Phases in the Calculator

Open the "Your Four Pillars" panel: the Day Master is the top character of the Day column, its branch sits below, and hidden stems appear as small characters. The "Element balance" panel shows weighted totals, while "Day Master strength" gives a weak, balanced, or strong verdict with score, season, support, drain, and climate need when present. There is no dedicated twelve-phase row, so copy the reference stem and target branch into this article's table.

To use the lookup: find your Day Master stem, then the branch you are checking. The phase names follow a fixed sequence; Yang stems apply that sequence forward through the branch order, while Yin stems use the reverse direction. Earth stems follow Fire in this table. Jia starts at Birth in Hai, then Bath at Zi, Youth at Chou, Adulthood at Yin and Emperor at Mao. Yi starts at Birth in Wu, then Bath at Si and Youth at Chen. The sequence cycles across branches, not literal ages.

Day Master phase uses the Day stem against the chosen branch; a pillar's own stem gives a separate calculation. In the examples, Jia at the month branch Si gives Sickness and Jia at Hai gives Birth. To try it, calculate your chart and use the lookup table below. If the birth hour is unknown, leave the hour-branch lookup unconfirmed.

三 How to read it

How the Twelve Growth Phases Work

The Twelve Growth Phases describe one stem’s stage against one branch. The sequence is fixed: Birth, Bath, Youth, Adulthood, Emperor, Decline, Sickness, Death, Grave, Extinction, Conception, Gestation. These are traditional metaphors for a cycle, not literal ages or health outcomes. A month branch at Sickness does not mean illness, and a branch at Birth does not mean an actual birth.

Each stem has a starting branch and a direction. Yang stems move forward through the branch order; yin stems move in reverse. Earth follows Fire: 戊 starts at 寅 like 丙, and 己 starts at 酉 like 丁. So 甲 Birth at 亥, then forward: 子 Bath, 丑 Youth, 寅 Adulthood, 卯 Emperor. For a yin example, 乙 Birth at 午, then reverse: 巳 Bath, 辰 Youth.

Two Inputs, One Phase

To calculate, copy the reference stem and the target branch, then find that stem’s row in the table below. Read across to the branch column. The Day Master phase always uses the Day stem against the chosen branch. The own-pillar stem phase is a separate calculation using that pillar’s own stem. In a chart with 甲 day master, month 巳 gives Sickness and month 亥 gives Birth; both are phase labels only.

Where to Find the Inputs

Use the calculator’s “Your Four Pillars” area to copy characters accurately. The Day Master is the top Day character, the branch sits below it, and hidden stems appear as small characters. The “Element balance” panel shows weighted totals, while “Day Master strength” gives a weak, balanced, or strong verdict with score, season, support, drain, and climate need when present. Hidden weights 1, 0.5, and 0.3 are calculator conventions, not a universal strength scale. There is no dedicated visible twelve-phase row on the main display, so use this article’s table rather than searching for a panel that is not there.

A Repeatable Lookup Method

Identify the Day stem; choose the branch you are testing; confirm yang forward or yin reverse; locate the Birth branch; count forward or backward to the target; read the phase name; then state the pair plainly, such as “甲 against 巳: Sickness.” Known birth time is recommended. With an unknown hour, do not treat any placeholder-derived score as complete. To review the stem layer first, see Heavenly Stems.

四 When the reading changes

These four scenarios show how to read the twelve growth phases from the visible grid. Each one names what to look for, what to check, and how far the conclusion can go.

Scenario 1: Reading a Day Master phase from a chosen branch

The observable condition is a Day Master stem and any branch you want to test. The concrete check is to take the Day stem, find its Birth branch, then count forward or reverse through the twelve phases until you reach the target branch. For Jia, Birth is Hai, so Hai gives Birth, Zi gives Bath, Chou gives Youth, Yin gives Adulthood, and Mao gives Emperor. For Yi, the direction reverses: Birth is Wu, followed by Bath at Si and Youth at Chen. The phase describes the reference stem at the chosen branch, not a literal age or life event.

Scenario 2: Checking a month branch against the Day Master

The observable condition is a chart with a known month branch. The concrete check is to apply the Day stem lookup to that branch. In the first verified example, Jia with month Si gives Sickness; in the second, Jia with month Hai gives Birth. The bounded conclusion is that the phase names a stage in the cycle, not an actual illness or delivery. A month Si Sickness reading is a positional label, not a health prediction.

Scenario 3: Separating Day Master phase from own-pillar stem phase

The observable condition is a pillar where the stem and branch both appear. The concrete check is to run two lookups: the Day stem against the branch gives the Day Master phase, while the pillar's own stem against its branch gives the pillar-stem phase. In the first example, Jia at Xu gives Gestation, and the Xu pillar stem Jia also gives Gestation. The bounded conclusion is that these are separate calculations sharing one branch, so do not merge them into a single verdict.

Scenario 4: Using the table when the UI has no phase row

The observable condition is the current main display, which shows the Day Master, branches, hidden stems, element balance, and a Day Master strength verdict with score, season, support, drain, and climate need when present. The concrete check is to copy the reference stem and target branch, then use this article's table rather than looking for a dedicated twelve-phase panel. The bounded conclusion is that the phase is a manual lookup. A known birth time is recommended; with an unknown hour, do not treat any placeholder-derived score as complete. To review how branches are organized, see Earthly Branches.

五 Worked chart examples

Both calendar-screened teaching charts use Jia Wood as the Day Master. They illustrate contrasting placements and do not represent client histories.

Jia Day Master phase 死 Death 病 Sickness 养 Gestation 病 Sickness
Own pillar stem phase 沐浴 Bath 死 Death 养 Gestation 帝旺 Emperor

Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 3.3, Earth 3.1, Metal 3.5, Water 0.

Reading Chart A’s Growth Phases

Chart A has four pillars: 庚午 in the Year, 辛巳 in the Month, 甲戌 in the Day, and 己巳 in the Hour. The Day Master is 甲, so the Day Master phase row matches 甲 against each branch. The own-pillar stem phase row uses each column's own stem instead. In the Day column both references are 甲, so both rows give Gestation at 戌.

How the Two-Input Lookup Works

Use the two-input lookup: one stem plus one branch. For 甲, the cycle runs forward from its Birth branch, 亥. So 甲 at 亥 is Birth, 子 is Bath, 丑 is Youth, 寅 is Adulthood, and 卯 is Emperor. The phases are symbolic stages, not literal ages. Yang stems move forward and yin stems reverse; Earth stems follow Fire.

Chart A’s Four Column Phases

In Chart A, the Year branch 午 gives 甲 the phase Death. The Month branch 巳 gives Sickness. The Day branch 戌 gives Gestation. The Hour branch 巳 again gives Sickness. These names describe the phase relationship only; Sickness here is not an actual illness, and Death is not a literal death.

Calculating Another Column

To calculate another column, take the Day stem 甲 and the chosen branch, then follow the forward sequence from 亥. For the own-pillar stem phase, use that pillar’s own stem instead. This keeps the Day Master reading and the pillar-stem reading distinct. One limitation: the phase names are a naming layer, not a full strength verdict.

Chart B — 庚午 / 丁亥 / 甲申 / 己巳
Position Year Month Day Hour
Stem 庚 丁 甲 己
Branch 午 亥 申 巳
Ten God Seven Killings Hurting Officer Day Master Direct Wealth
Hidden stems 丁 Hurting Officer (1)
己 Direct Wealth (0.5)
壬 Indirect Resource (1)
甲 Friend (0.5)
庚 Seven Killings (1)
壬 Indirect Resource (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
丙 Eating God (1)
庚 Seven Killings (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
Jia Day Master phase 死 Death 长生 Birth 绝 Extinction 病 Sickness
Own pillar stem phase 沐浴 Bath 胎 Conception 绝 Extinction 帝旺 Emperor

Weighted element totals: Wood 1.5, Fire 3, Earth 2.1, Metal 2.5, Water 1.5.

Chart B shares Chart A's Year pillar 庚午 and Hour pillar 己巳, but its Month and Day branches differ: 丁亥 replaces 辛巳, and 甲申 replaces 甲戌. The Day Master is still 甲, so the same Twelve Growth Phases lookup applies, yet the branch changes shift each phase result.

For the Month, 甲 against 亥 gives Birth, because 亥 is Jia's birth branch and yang stems run forward. For the Day, 甲 against 申 gives Extinction. Chart A's Month branch 巳 gave Sickness, and its Day branch 戌 gave Gestation. Neither Sickness nor Birth describes illness or an actual birth; these are traditional stage names for where a stem sits relative to a branch.

To read Chart B yourself:

  • Confirm the Day Master is 甲.
  • Take each branch in turn and find Jia's row in the lookup.
  • Count forward from Birth at 亥 through Bath, Youth, Adulthood, Emperor, Decline, Sickness, Death, Grave, Extinction, Conception, and Gestation.
  • Record the phase beside each pillar, then read the visible stems through their Ten Gods labels.

Remember that the Day Master phase uses the Day stem against a chosen branch, while each pillar's own stem is a separate calculation. The phase sequence cycles across branches, not literal ages, so treat it as a naming layer rather than a prediction.

六 What this comparison can tell you

The lookup used here advances for Yang stems, reverses for Yin stems and places Earth with Fire. Each of its ten stem rows assigns one phase to each of twelve branches. Birth therefore occupies ten of the 120 stem–branch lookup cells. That is a property of the lookup table, not a birth-population rate or the proportion of whole charts containing Birth. Translations of the phase names vary, so keep the Chinese name and reference stem in your notes.

Calculate your chart and compare its actual stems and branches with the worked examples.
