一 What it is
A Xin Wei Day Pillar is a day pillar whose top stem is Xin Yin Metal and whose bottom branch is Wei Yin Earth. Think of a precision jeweler working above a storage drawer: the drawer holds useful material, but the jeweler's own metal is not inside it. Wei hides Ji Indirect Resource, Ding Seven Killings, and Yi Indirect Wealth, so the branch supplies Resource, pressure, and wealth material rather than a Metal root.
What distinguishes this pillar is that its hidden stems carry three different Ten Gods while containing no hidden Metal at all. Ji Earth is Resource, not a root. Ding is Seven Killings for Xin, not Direct Officer, and Yi is Indirect Wealth, not Direct Wealth. Because Xin runs in reverse, Xin at Wei sits in Decline, and the Day Master and own-pillar-stem phase references match at the day position because both use Xin at Wei.
This matters because Geng and Xin both need hidden Metal for roots; Earth is Resource, not a root. A hidden Geng or Xin counts as a Metal root regardless of whether its Ten God label is Friend or Rob Wealth, while visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. Also, a branch's main element is not the same as every hidden stem inside it. Phase labels here are structural references only, not health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationship predictions, and a phase cannot create a root.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read This in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The upper character is the Day Master stem; for this article it must read 辛. The lower character is the Day branch; here it must read 未. Small hidden-stem characters sit inside the branch cell, showing 己, 丁 and 乙. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels or a dedicated growth-phase row, so read those from the article tables and full overview.
If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed rather than guessing. Near a day boundary, use calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and birth time instead of applying an invented universal rollover rule.
Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase or strength verdict. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores. Phase labels describe position only, not health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career or relationships. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can.
三 How to read it
How to Read a Xin Wei Chart in Four Steps
First, fix the layer of the cycle index. Locate the day pillar in the 60-pair sequence and confirm its number. Xin Wei is index 8. This index is a reference point, not a strength score. It tells you where the pillar sits, and because Xin is Yin, the phase direction runs in reverse. Keep this layer separate from element counting; mixing them produces confused readings. The index also confirms which pillar is the day pillar before you touch any Ten God label.
Second, read the stem's element and polarity. The day stem is Xin, Yin Metal. That single label determines every Ten God in the chart. Do not borrow Geng's labels. For Xin, Jia is Direct Wealth, Yi is Indirect Wealth, Bing is Direct Officer, Ding is Seven Killings, Wu is Direct Resource, Ji is Indirect Resource, Geng is Rob Wealth, Xin is Friend, Ren is Hurting Officer, and Gui is Eating God. When you meet a hidden stem, ask what it is to Xin, not what it would be to another Day Master.
Third, list the hidden stems with their Ten Gods and fixed weights. Wei holds Ji (Indirect Resource, 1), Ding (Seven Killings, .5), and Yi (Indirect Wealth, .3). These weights are fixed reference values, not seasonal strength scores, and they do not transform automatically. Remember that Wei's main element is Earth, but the branch is not only Earth; the hidden Ding and Yi sit inside it. Also check whether any hidden Metal appears anywhere, because both Geng and Xin require hidden Metal for a root. Earth is Resource, not a root. Wei hides no Geng or Xin, so this branch gives Xin no Metal root, and a visible peer stem is not itself a hidden root.
Fourth, place the day pillar inside the complete chart and read phase. The Day Master phase at the day position and the own-pillar-stem phase are identical references: both are Decline for Xin at Wei. Compare other pillars only where they actually change. In chart A, year and month are Ren Shen and Ren Zi; in chart B, they are Ren Wu and Bing Wu. The day and hour pillars are unchanged, so any contrast comes from those two earlier positions, not from Wei itself. Chart A has an additional Metal root in Shen; both charts retain hidden Geng in the Si hour branch. B instead adds Fire placements around the unchanged day pillar. Phase labels stay cycle references and cannot create a root. The Wei Goat Earthly Branch page explains the branch's storage role further.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Xin | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 己 | Indirect Resource | 1 |
| 丁 | Seven Killings | 0.5 |
| 乙 | Indirect Wealth | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Xin phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 辛未 | 8 | 衰 Decline |
四 When the reading changes
Scenario A: Water Output Around a Wei Day Branch
Chart A places 辛未 at the day pillar with 壬申, 壬子 and 癸巳 around it. The month branch 子 holds only 癸 Eating God, so the season reads as water-dominant rather than a Metal season. The year branch 申 does contain hidden 庚 Rob Wealth, a genuine Metal root for 辛, and the hour branch 巳 hides 庚 at 0.5. Wei itself hides 己 Indirect Resource, 丁 Seven Killings and 乙 Indirect Wealth, but no hidden Metal, so the day branch is Resource rather than root. The 辛 day master sits at 衰 Decline in Wei, and because 辛 runs in reverse the day stem phase is also 衰. That label is a positional reference, not a health or lifespan statement. Relationship reading stays limited: the visible 壬 Hurting Officer stems and 癸 Eating God hour stem describe output and expression, not a partner forecast, and the hidden 乙 in Wei is Indirect Wealth, not Direct Wealth. Career reflection should stay tied to placements: heavy water output around a Resource day branch, with Metal roots coming from 申 and 巳 rather than Wei.
Scenario B: Fire Officers Over the Same Wei Day Branch
Chart B keeps 辛未 at the day pillar but changes the year and month pillars to 壬午 and 丙午. The month stem is now 丙 Direct Officer, and both 午 branches hide 丁 Seven Killings at 1 and 己 Indirect Resource at 0.5. Fire is far more visible, yet the day master still sits at 衰 Decline in Wei. The Metal root picture is thinner: the only hidden Metal is 庚 Rob Wealth at 0.5 in the hour branch 巳, while Wei again supplies no hidden Metal. Earth remains Resource through 己, not a root. Comparing A and B, the pillars that actually change are year and month; day and hour stay 辛未 and 癸巳. That is why B reads as Officer and Seven Killings pressure around a Resource day branch, while A reads as output and water around a Metal root in 申. Neither chart turns 己 Earth into a root, and neither treats visible 壬 or 癸 as hidden Metal. For learning how to use the 12 growth phases, read the day stem against each branch in the phase reference rather than assuming the main grid has a phase row.
Wei as Wood Storage and the Limits of Hidden Wealth
Wei is traditionally described as a Wood storage branch, and here it hides 乙 Indirect Wealth at 0.3 alongside 己 Indirect Resource and 丁 Seven Killings. That hidden 乙 is not Direct Wealth for 辛, and its fixed weight is not a seasonal strength score. It also does not create a Metal root. A reader might see 未 and assume the day master is supported because Earth is Resource, but Resource and root are different functions: 己 Earth feeds 辛, while only hidden 庚 or 辛 can root it. In both charts the day branch contributes Resource, Seven Killings and a trace of Indirect Wealth, so financial or relationship conclusions should stay modest and placement-based. The 丁 in Wei is Seven Killings, not Direct Officer, and the 乙 is Indirect Wealth, not Direct Wealth. Those labels matter when comparing the day pillar with the hour branch 巳, which hides 丙 Direct Officer and 庚 Rob Wealth. The day pillar alone cannot carry a full wealth or partnership reading.
Reading the Day Master Without Reusing Other Stems
Only 辛 is the Day Master in this article. 庚 appears in the charts as hidden Rob Wealth, and 辛 appears as the day stem itself; the hidden Geng is a root stem, not a second Day Master. Visible Water Output stems such as 壬 or 癸 are not Metal peers or hidden Metal roots, and a branch's main element is not the same as every hidden stem inside it. For this branch, keep three labels distinct: 己 Indirect Resource, 丁 Seven Killings and 乙 Indirect Wealth. The day pillar 辛未 therefore carries Indirect Resource, Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth, while 衰 Decline is simply the matrix position for 辛 at 未 under reverse yin direction. It is not a personality, career or relationship prediction. Use the Four Pillars grid to locate the day stem, day branch and small hidden-stem characters, then compare those facts with the two teaching charts above.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Xin Metal Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 壬 | 辛 | 癸 |
| Branch | 申 | 子 | 未 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Hurting Officer | Day Master | Eating God |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Rob Wealth (1) 壬 Hurting Officer (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
癸 Eating God (1) | 己 Indirect Resource (1) 丁 Seven Killings (0.5) 乙 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
| Xin Day Master phase | 帝旺 Emperor | 长生 Birth | 衰 Decline | 死 Death |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 帝旺 Emperor | 衰 Decline | 胎 Conception |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 1.5, Earth 1.6, Metal 2.5, Water 4.5.
Chart A places 辛 Xin Yin Metal as the Day Master on the day pillar 辛未, with the year pillar 壬申, month pillar 壬子, and hour pillar 癸巳. The day position is the target-phase position, so the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase are identical references: both read 衰 Decline for Xin at Wei under the yin reverse sequence. That phase label is a reference only, not a health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationship prediction.
Wei hides 己 Ji Indirect Resource, 丁 Ding Seven Killings, and 乙 Yi Indirect Wealth. These labels follow from the actual Day Master Xin. Ji and Geng must never be reused as if they were the Day Master here. Ding is not Direct Officer to Xin, and Yi is not Direct Wealth to Xin; those belong to a Geng Day Master.
Roots need hidden Metal. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth. Earth is Resource. In chart A, the year branch Shen hides Geng Rob Wealth, Ren Hurting Officer, and Wu Direct Resource, and the hour branch Si hides Bing Direct Officer, Geng Rob Wealth, and Wu Direct Resource. Those hidden Geng stems are genuine Metal roots. Wei itself has no hidden Metal, so Ji Earth Resource is not a root. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can.
Two useful contrasts: first, the visible year and month stems are Ren Hurting Officer and the hour stem is Gui Eating God, so these visible Water stems are Output, not Metal peers or hidden Metal roots. Second, Wei's main element is Earth, yet that does not make every hidden stem Earth. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 辛 | 癸 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 未 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Direct Officer | Day Master | Eating God |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Seven Killings (1) 己 Indirect Resource (0.5) |
丁 Seven Killings (1) 己 Indirect Resource (0.5) |
己 Indirect Resource (1) 丁 Seven Killings (0.5) 乙 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
| Xin Day Master phase | 病 Sickness | 病 Sickness | 衰 Decline | 死 Death |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 衰 Decline | 胎 Conception |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 4.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 1.5, Water 2.
How to Read Chart B
Chart B runs 壬午, 丙午, 辛未, 癸巳. The Day Master is 辛, and only 辛 carries that label. The year 壬 is Hurting Officer over 午, which hides 丁 Seven Killings and 己 Indirect Resource. The month 丙 is Direct Officer over another 午 with the same hidden pair. The hour 癸 is Eating God over 巳, hiding 丙 Direct Officer, 庚 Rob Wealth, and 戊 Direct Resource.
Notice that 庚 appears hidden in 巳. That is a genuine Metal root for 辛, even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots, and a branch's main element does not describe every hidden stem inside it. The 未 branch still offers Resource and Wealth, but no Metal.
Compared with Chart A, the day and hour pillars are unchanged: 辛未 and 癸巳. What actually changes is the year and month. Chart A had 壬申 and 壬子; Chart B replaces them with 壬午 and 丙午. That swap removes hidden 庚 from 申 and adds Fire-heavy 午 branches.
Chart B therefore leans on 巳's hidden 庚 for Metal rooting while Fire and Earth dominate the surrounding pillars. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores, and no automatic transformation follows from these placements. For a hands-on comparison, see this Ji Wei Day Pillar reference.
Reader check: open the Four Pillars grid, locate the Day column's top stem and bottom branch, then read the small hidden-stem characters inside each branch. Confirm which hidden stems are Metal before calling anything a root.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
