Annual Pillars (Liu Nian): How the Current Year Appears in Your Bazi Results

一 What it is

What Annual Pillars Mean

Think of a long-running television series. The season is the decade; each episode is one year. An annual pillar is the episode label for the present calendar year, shown as a stem-branch card inside the active decade. In Bazi, that yearly label is called Liu Nian.

The lookup separates three things. The Current Luck Pillar is the highlighted ten-year card, and it contains the annual list. The Current Year is the single stem-branch card for the present calendar year, one year inside the active decade. The Natal chart is the original four columns, which stay separate from the yearly label. For example, a chart may show the active decade 甲申 from 2018 to 2027, with 2026 appearing as 丙午 at age 37. Those are visible labels and lookup matches, not verdicts.

Only after that separation does interpretation begin. A yearly stem can be read through a Ten-God relationship, and its branch through hidden stems and relationship labels. That reading is interpretive vocabulary, not an empirical outcome. An annual label cannot prove that events, money, romance, health or decisions will occur. It does not forecast. It also cannot confirm that a combination is good or a clash is bad, and a Wealth or Officer star does not guarantee money or a career.

Year and Month use China time; Day and Hour use true solar time. Unknown time means no invented Hour Pillar. Hidden-stem weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 are this calculator’s list-order convention, and raw totals are not a strength verdict. The visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. To see how the decade frame works, read Luck Pillars.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Finding the Luck Pillars Section

Scroll past the natal four columns to the Luck Pillars area. This section begins with a start age and a direction: forward or reverse. The start age shows when the first ten-year card begins, while the direction tells you whether the sequence counts forward or backward from the month pillar. Both depend on the birth data and calendar rules, so treat them as calculated labels rather than personal predictions.

Below the start details, each ten-year card displays a stem-branch pair, its age range and its calendar years. One card is highlighted as current. That highlight simply marks where the present year falls inside the sequence; it does not rate the decade or forecast events.

Inside the highlighted card, look for the annual-pillar list. Each row is one year, pairing a yearly stem and branch with an age and year number. The present calendar year appears as one card in that list. You can read its Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches as labels, then compare them with the natal chart, but keep the yearly label separate from the original four columns.

If the birth time is unknown, no Hour Pillar is calculated, and that can affect the calculated sequence. Use the displayed start age, direction, ten-year cards, highlighted card and annual list as your guide, then calculate your chart.

三 How to read it

How to Read Annual Pillars Step by Step

Start with the natal chart, because the yearly label only makes sense against that fixed background. Record the four pillars exactly as calculated: year, month, day and hour. Year and month boundaries follow China time, while day and hour use true solar time. If the birth time is unknown, leave the Hour Pillar blank rather than inventing one. Note the Day Master, the ten visible stems and branches, and any hidden stems with their list-order weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3. Those weights are this calculator’s convention, not a universal rule, and raw five-element totals are not a strength verdict.

Next, write down the calculated luck sequence before interpreting anything. The start age, forward or reverse direction, and each ten-year Luck Pillars|Luck Pillar belong to the calendar layer. In one sample chart, the start age is 9, the direction is forward, and the first Luck Pillar is 壬午. In another, the start age is 4, the direction is reverse, and the first is 庚辰. These are calculated facts, not predictions.

Then identify the active decade and the annual card inside it. The current Luck Pillar is the highlighted ten-year card, and the annual list sits within that decade. For 2026, the annual stem-branch is 丙午. The minor pillar shown beside it is a separate label, not a second annual pillar. Keep the natal four columns apart from this yearly label so the layers do not blur.

After the calendar facts are recorded, traditional interpretation may begin. Compare the annual stem and branch with the natal chart and the active decade, using the same vocabulary of Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, hidden stems and Ten Gods. The visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. A relationship label such as a combination, clash, Wealth star or Officer star is interpretive vocabulary, not an empirical outcome. It does not guarantee money, career, romance, health or any event.

Finally, keep the procedure repeatable: record the four natal pillars, the start age, the direction, the selected ten-year Luck Pillar and the annual label. Separate what the calendar calculates from what tradition later reads into it. No annual label forecasts events, timing, outcomes or transformations.

四 When the reading changes

Repeated Labels Across the Natal Chart and the Annual Card

A label can appear more than once without multiplying its meaning. Suppose the natal year stem is 庚, read as Hurting Officer, and the current annual stem is also 庚. The check is simple: compare the annual stem with each natal stem and note every repeat. A repeated label shows that the same Ten-God category is being referenced in two places, not that its influence doubles. The annual card sits inside the active Earthly Branches and stem pair, so the repeat is read alongside the decade, not instead of it. Treat repetition as emphasis in the vocabulary, not as a stronger forecast.

Hidden-Only Versus Visible Occurrence

Some labels appear only among hidden stems. In the sample chart, the day branch 卯 hides 乙, a Seven Killings label. That hidden stem is not visible on the surface of the pillar. The check is to look at whether a label occurs as a visible stem, a visible branch, or only inside a branch's hidden list. Hidden-only occurrence means the label is present in the chart's internal vocabulary but absent from its visible surface. Visible occurrence means the label is directly readable. Neither condition predicts an outcome; they describe where the label sits.

Positional Differences Within the Four Columns

The same label carries different positional context depending on which column it occupies. A label in the year column is read in the context of the early-life palace; the same label in the hour column is read in the later-life palace. The check is to record the column position before interpreting the label. Position changes the reading frame, not the label's intrinsic meaning. When the annual card repeats a natal label, note whether the natal occurrence is in year, month, day, or hour. The comparison is structural, not predictive.

Coexistence With Another Relation or Ten-God Category

A label rarely stands alone. The annual branch may combine with one natal branch while clashing with another, and the annual stem may carry a Ten-God category different from the branch's hidden gods. The check is to list every relation the annual card forms with the natal chart and every Ten-God category it introduces. Coexistence means the reading must hold multiple labels at once. A combination is not good, a clash is not bad, and a Wealth or Officer label does not guarantee money or career. The annual card is a yearly label inside the active Luck Pillar, and its meaning stays within that frame.

Chart A: Reading the Annual Pillar Inside the Active Decade

Chart A begins with four natal columns: 庚午 in the year position, 辛巳 in the month, 己卯 in the day, and 丙寅 in the hour. The day stem 己 is the Day Master. Its month stem 辛 is labeled Eating God, the year stem 庚 is Hurting Officer, and the hour stem 丙 is Direct Resource. Each branch also carries hidden stems: 午 holds 丁 and 己; 巳 holds 丙, 庚, and 戊; 卯 holds 乙; 寅 holds 甲, 丙, and 戊. These hidden stems receive the calculator’s list-order weights of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3, so raw totals are not a strength verdict.

The Luck Pillars sequence starts at age 9 in 1998 and moves forward. The first decade is 壬午, followed by 癸未, then 甲申. Chart A’s active decade is 甲申, covering ages 29–38 and years 2018–2027. Inside that decade, the annual list runs from 戊戌 in 2018 to 丁未 in 2027. The current annual card is 丙午 for 2026, age 37, with minor pillar 癸卯.

To read this card, keep three layers separate. The natal chart supplies the original four columns. The active Luck Pillar supplies the ten-year container, here 甲申. The annual card supplies one year inside that container, here 丙午. The annual stem 丙 and branch 午 can be compared with the natal stems and branches, and with the active decade’s stem 甲 and branch 申, using the same Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches vocabulary. Relationship labels describe structural contact, not guaranteed events. The annual label does not forecast money, romance, health, or decisions.

Reading Chart B’s Annual Layer

Chart B shares the same four natal columns as Chart A: 庚午, 辛巳, 己卯 and 丙寅. Its Luck Pillars sequence differs. Chart B starts at age 4, moves in reverse, and opens with 庚辰. The active decade is 丁丑, running from ages 34 to 43, or 2023 through 2032. Inside that decade, the 2026 annual card is 丙午, with a minor annual label of 己丑.

To read this layer, keep three items separate. First, the natal chart supplies the original four columns. Second, the active Luck Pillar supplies the ten-year container. Third, the annual card supplies one stem-branch label for the present calendar year. The annual card does not replace the natal chart, and it does not forecast events, money, romance, health or decisions.

Chart B’s 2026 card, 丙午, can be compared with its natal stems and branches using ordinary relationships among Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The same card appears in Chart A, yet Chart A sits inside a different active decade, 甲申, with a different minor annual label, 癸卯. The annual stem-branch is identical; the surrounding decade and minor label are not. That contrast shows why the annual card should be read within its own Luck Pillar rather than in isolation.

A Repeatable Observation Method

  • Identify the active Luck Pillar: its stem-branch, age range and year range.
  • Locate the current year inside that decade’s annual list.
  • Note the annual stem-branch and any minor annual label shown.
  • Compare those labels with the natal columns, keeping each layer distinct.
  • Record relationship labels as vocabulary, not as outcomes.

Applied to Chart B, this method yields one clear observation: 丙午 is the 2026 annual label inside the 丁丑 decade. Nothing more should be asserted from the label alone.

六 Base-rate boundary

The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This topic contains several possible labels or thresholds, so a single combined percentage would conceal which exact condition was counted.

Any later frequency must define one exact condition first and report an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people, income outcomes, careers or birth records. The presence of a label is not an event forecast.

Calculate your chart and compare the relevant rows with the lookup and examples above.
