Bazi and Marriage: How to Read the Spouse Palace Without Making Predictions

一 What it is

What the Spouse Palace Means in a Bazi Chart

Think of a street address: it tells you where a building sits, not who lives inside or how happy they are. The Spouse Palace works the same way. In a Bazi chart, the Day Branch — the bottom character of the Day column — is traditionally called the Spouse Palace. It is a location in the chart, nothing more.

Reading begins with visible labels. Your calculator first identifies the Day Branch and lists its hidden stems, then records any branch relation formed with the exact branches appearing elsewhere. These are lookups: a match is noted, not judged. The Day Pillar, the Day Stem plus Day Branch, is best read as one column before isolating any single label.

Only after that does interpretation enter, and it stays provisional. A hidden stem inside the Day Branch may be described with a Ten-God label, and a listed combination, clash, harm or punishment may be noted separately. Such vocabulary is interpretive, not evidence.

What this topic cannot prove matters just as much. No Day Branch, hidden stem or branch relation establishes marriage timing, a partner's traits, divorce, harmony or conflict. A Wealth or Officer label does not guarantee money or a career, and no combination is automatically good while a clash is automatically bad.

Treat the Spouse Palace as one chart position among several, described carefully before anything is inferred from it.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Find the Day Master and Ten-God Labels

Start with the Day column. Its top character is the Day Master, the reference point for every other label. In the example chart 乙丑 辛巳 甲寅 壬申, the Day Master is Jia Wood. A reader whose Day Master is different will see different Ten-God names, so treat Jia Wood as an illustration only.

The visible Ten-God label sits beside each stem outside the Day column: Yi is Rob Wealth, Xin is Direct Officer, and Ren is Indirect Resource. The Day Stem itself is marked Day Master rather than given a Ten-God label.

Hidden stems live inside each branch. The Day Branch, the bottom character of the Day column, is the traditional Spouse Palace location. In the first example, 寅 holds Jia, Bing and Wu, listed as Friend, Eating God and Indirect Wealth. In the second example, 午 holds Ding and Ji, listed as Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth.

Read the Day Pillar as one column before isolating labels. Then record any listed branch relation, such as a combination, clash, harm or punishment, separately from the hidden stems. If the birth time is unknown, no Hour Pillar appears, so no Hour stem or branch labels exist.

三 How to read it

How to Observe the Spouse Palace Step by Step

Begin with the Day Pillar, the column formed by the Day Stem and Day Branch. Read it as one unit before isolating any label. The Day Stem is the Day Master, the reference point for every other character. The Day Branch, the bottom character of that column, is the traditional Spouse Palace location. In the first sample chart, the Day Pillar is 甲寅, so 甲 is the Day Master and 寅 is the Spouse Palace.

Next, identify the element relationship between the Day Master and the branch you are studying. Ask which element the branch carries and how it relates to the Day Master's element. This relationship, not the branch's reputation, is what you record. Then separate visible stems from hidden stems. Visible stems sit on top of each pillar; hidden stems are stored inside the branch and carry different weights. This calculator lists hidden stems in order and assigns weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 by that list order. In 寅, the hidden stems are 甲, 丙 and 戊, so 甲 receives 1.0, 丙 receives 0.5 and 戊 receives 0.3.

Record positions carefully. Note whether a branch sits in the year, month, day or hour column, because position describes location, not outcome. The same branch can appear in several columns, and each occurrence is logged separately. When other branches in the chart form a listed relation with the Day Branch, record that relation on its own line. A combination, clash, harm or punishment is a named structural relation, not a verdict about marriage. The Earthly Branches reference explains how these branch identities and their hidden stems are organized.

Finally, total the weighted values if you wish, but treat the numbers as descriptive counts. Raw totals are not a strength verdict, and a high or low figure does not forecast an event. The visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. In the second sample, the Day Branch 午 holds two hidden stems, 丁 and 己, weighted 1.0 and 0.5. That is an observation about structure, not a statement about a partner, a wedding date or a marriage's quality.

四 When the reading changes

Repeated labels across columns

A label can appear more than once without multiplying its meaning. In the first sample, Direct Officer is visible on the month stem and also sits hidden inside the year branch 丑. The observable condition is repetition: one occurrence is on a stem, another is buried in a branch. To check it, list every column and mark whether each Ten-God label is visible or hidden, then count how many columns carry it. The limited reading is that the same interpretive vocabulary recurs in different positions. It does not mean the label is stronger, more fortunate, or more likely to produce a marriage outcome. Repetition is a chart pattern, not a forecast.

Hidden-only versus visible occurrence

Hidden stems and visible stems are not read identically. In the second sample, the Day Branch 午 holds two hidden stems, 丁 and 己, labelled Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth. Neither appears as a visible stem in that column. The check is simple: open each branch, read its hidden stems in the calculator’s listed order, and note whether the same label also appears above ground. Hidden-only occurrence means the label is present in the branch layer but absent from the visible stem layer. That distinction affects how the chart is described, not what will happen. A hidden Direct Wealth stem is still just a label inside a branch.

Positional differences within the chart

The same branch can carry different weight depending on where it sits. The Day Branch is the traditional Spouse Palace location, so its hidden stems are often examined first when readers discuss marriage. But position changes emphasis, not certainty. In the first sample, the Day Branch 寅 contains Friend, Eating God, and Indirect Wealth; in the second, the Day Branch 午 contains Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth. To check positional difference, compare the Day Branch with the year, month, and hour branches side by side. A label in the Day Branch is not automatically more predictive than the same label elsewhere. Position tells you where to look, not what the result will be.

Coexistence with another relation or category

Relations and Ten-God categories can sit in the same chart at the same time. The second sample shows the Day Branch 午 while the hour branch 申 appears elsewhere; where listed branch pairs match, the calculator records the relation separately, including Six Clashes. The check is to record each listed relation on its own line and each Ten-God category on another, then observe coexistence rather than merging them into one verdict. A clash listed alongside a Wealth or Officer label does not cancel or confirm either one. Coexistence means multiple chart features are present; it does not predict harmony, conflict, timing, or any marital event.

Chart A: Reading the Spouse Palace in a Full Pillar

Chart A is built from four pillars: 乙丑 in the year, 辛巳 in the month, 甲寅 in the day, and 壬申 in the hour. Read the Day Pillar first as one column. Its stem is 甲, the Day Master, and its branch is 寅. That bottom character of the Day column is the traditional Spouse Palace location.

The Day Branch 寅 holds three hidden stems in this calculator’s list order: 甲, 丙, and 戊. Their listed Ten-God labels are Friend, Eating God, and Indirect Wealth. These are interpretive vocabulary, not evidence about a partner or a marriage. The branch simply gives the Palace a set of hidden stems to examine.

Now trace the other branches by exact position. The year branch is 丑, the month branch is 巳, and the hour branch is 申. Each is an Earthly Branch with its own hidden stems and labels. The supplied chart does not list a combination, clash, harm, or punishment involving 寅, so none should be recorded here. If one appeared, it would be noted separately rather than treated as a verdict.

The five-element totals are wood 3, fire 1.5, earth 1.9, metal 2.8, and water 2. The weighted Ten-God totals are Friend 1, Rob Wealth 1, Eating God 1.5, Hurting Officer 0, Indirect Wealth 0.9, Direct Wealth 1, Seven Killings 1.5, Direct Officer 1.3, Indirect Resource 1.5, and Direct Resource 0.5. The visible Day Master counts in the five-element totals but is excluded only from the weighted Ten-God totals.

These raw totals are not a strength verdict. Chart A shows how the Spouse Palace sits inside a complete chart, not what any marriage will do.

Chart B — 丙寅 / 戊戌 / 甲午 / 壬申
Position Year Month Day Hour

己 Direct Wealth (0.5)
庚 Seven Killings (1)
壬 Indirect Resource (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)

Relevant observation(s) — Day Branch 午; two hidden stems in the Day Branch.

Element totals — Wood 2.0; Fire 2.8; Earth 3.1; Metal 1.5; Water 1.5.

Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 1.0; Eating God 1.5; Hurting Officer 1.3; Indirect Wealth 2.6; Direct Wealth 0.5; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.5; Indirect Resource 1.5.

Reading Chart B’s Spouse Palace

Chart B has the Day Pillar 甲午. Its Day Branch is 午, the traditional Spouse Palace. This is a chart location, not a marriage forecast. The branch contains two hidden stems: 丁 (Hurting Officer) and 己 (Direct Wealth). Their listed weights are 1.0 and 0.5, following this calculator’s list-order convention. These labels describe the palace’s internal vocabulary; they do not prove partner traits, timing, harmony or conflict.

Now check the other branches for exact relations. Chart B lists 寅 in the Year, 戌 in the Month and 申 in the Hour. A relation is recorded only when the exact branch appears elsewhere. Here, 午 has no listed combination, clash, harm or punishment with 寅, 戌 or 申. That is an observation, not a verdict. Absence of a listed relation does not mean a marriage is stable, and presence would not mean it is unstable.

The Day Stem 甲 is the Day Master. It counts in the five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. Chart B’s raw totals are Wood 2, Fire 2.8, Earth 3.1, Metal 1.5 and Water 1.5. Raw totals are not a strength verdict.

Contrast With Chart A

Chart A has the Day Pillar 甲寅. Its Day Branch 寅 holds three hidden stems: 甲 (Friend), 丙 (Eating God) and 戊 (Indirect Wealth). So Chart A’s Spouse Palace has three hidden stems, while Chart B’s has two. Chart A also lists 申 in the Hour; 寅 and 申 form a Six Clashes relation. Chart B’s 午 has no such listed relation. The contrast is structural, not a judgment about either chart.

A Repeatable Observation Method

  • Locate the Day Branch, the bottom character of the Day column.
  • Read the Day Pillar as one column before isolating labels.
  • List the hidden stems and their listed weights.
  • Scan the other branches for exact listed relations.
  • Record each combination, clash, harm or punishment separately.

This method keeps observation distinct from prediction. For background, see Day Pillar, Earthly Branches and Six Clashes.

六 Base-rate boundary

The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This topic contains several possible labels or thresholds, so a single combined percentage would conceal which exact condition was counted.

Any later frequency must define one exact condition first and report an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people, income outcomes, careers or birth records. The presence of a label is not an event forecast.
