一 What it is
What Conception (Tai) Means in the Twelve Phase Cycle
Conception (Tai 胎) is the eleventh of the twelve growth phases: a symbolic marker of latent formation and stored potential, sitting after Extinction (Jue 绝) and before Gestation (Yang 养). Think of a blueprint folded inside a drawer — the design exists, but no building has started. The phase names the quiet presence of a pattern, not an event.
Its imagery is formation without manifestation. Extinction empties the previous cycle; Conception marks the first faint imprint of what could later take shape. Gestation then nourishes that imprint, and the cycle eventually returns to Birth (Chang Sheng 长生). Conception is therefore not Birth, not Gestation, and not a pregnancy forecast — it is one lookup label among twelve.
Lookup is mechanical. Jia meets Conception at You; You hides only Xin, Direct Officer, with no Wood root, so the label and the Ten God coexist without implying promotion. In one teaching chart, a month Xin at You shows Adulthood for the pillar stem while the Jia Day Master reads Conception at the same branch; in another, an hour Gui at You shows Sickness for the stem while Jia again reads Conception. Different labels share one branch because Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase are separate lookups.
Use Conception as vocabulary for potential in the cycle. It does not promise a new beginning, fertility, childbirth timing, or any medical outcome.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Reading Conception in Your Chart
Conception (Tai 胎) is the eleventh stage, following Extinction (Jue 绝) and preceding Gestation (Yang 养). It symbolizes formation and potential, not pregnancy, fertility, childbirth timing, miscarriage, or medical evidence. It is not Gestation, and not Birth (Chang Sheng 长生); the full cycle runs from Gestation back to Birth. Jia at You is Conception; You hides Xin, Direct Officer, with no Wood root. In chart A, month Xin at You shows Adulthood; in chart B, hour Gui at You shows Sickness — different labels coexist at the same branch. A hidden Officer label does not promise promotion, and Tai is not a guaranteed new beginning or event.
In the UI, your Four Pillars shows the Day stem above the Day branch, with hidden stems as small characters. Element balance gives weighted totals, and Day Master strength is a separate scored estimate. There is currently no dedicated Twelve Growth Phases row, so copy the reference stem and target branch into the article table. That ten-row table identifies only the branch matching this phase for each stem; it is not a complete phase matrix or interactive calculator. The two worked-chart tables below contain both Jia-phase and own-pillar-stem phase rows. An unknown hour leaves the hour reading unconfirmed. To calculate your chart, gather the checklist below.
- Day stem and all four branches
- Hidden stems per branch
- Reference stem for each phase lookup
- Target branch to match
- Element weights (1, 0.5, 0.3 convention)
- Day Master strength score
- Hour pillar, or note it as unknown
三 How to read it
How to Look Up Conception (Tai)
Conception (胎, Tai) is the eleventh growth phase, sitting after Extinction (绝, Jue) and before Gestation (养, Yang). Treat it as symbolic formation and stored potential, not as pregnancy, fertility, childbirth timing, miscarriage, or medical evidence. It is also not the same phase as Gestation or Birth (长生, Chang Sheng); the cycle runs through Conception, Gestation, then returns to Birth. Lookup is a reference-stem-to-branch match: Jia meets Conception at You, Yi at Shen, Bing and Wu at Zi, Ding and Ji at Hai, Geng at Mao, Xin at Yin, Ren at Wu, and Gui at Si. Yang stems count forward, yin stems reverse, and Earth follows Fire in this convention. The target-phase table lists only these pairs, so a branch absent from it is simply not Conception for that reference stem; the complete matrix for every stem-branch combination appears in the linked Twelve Growth Phases overview.
Three comparisons from the matrix show why the reference stem matters. Jia at You is Conception, but Yi at You is Extinction, and Gui at You is Sickness. Jia at Zi is Bath, while Bing at Zi is Conception. Jia at Hai is Birth, while Ding at Hai is Conception. Changing the reference stem changes the phase even when the branch stays fixed; changing the column does not change the phase of an identical reference-stem/branch pair. Keep growth-phase lookup separate from Ten Gods: the phase is a stem-branch relationship, while Ten Gods describe relationships to the Day Master.
Hidden stems belong to the branch, not to the phase label. You hides only Xin, which is Direct Officer relative to Jia, at weight 1. That hidden Officer does not promise promotion, and Conception does not guarantee a new beginning or event. In example A, Jia day master has a month pillar Xin at You: the Day Master phase is Conception, while the pillar stem Xin at You is Adulthood (临官, Lin Guan). In example B, the hour pillar Gui at You gives Jia Conception, while the pillar stem Gui at You is Sickness (病, Bing). Different labels coexist at the same branch because each row uses a different reference stem.
Common confusion clusters around names and roots. Tai 胎 is a phase name; there is no Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch named Tai. Conception is not Gestation, and a hidden Direct Officer is not the same as a visible Officer. A same-element root is not a same-stem root: You's hidden Xin is metal, but Jia is wood, so You gives Jia no Wood root. Weights 1, 0.5, and 0.3 are calculator conventions for hidden stems, not scores for life outcomes.
Use the phase as traditional symbolic vocabulary for potential in the cycle, then read structure through the full chart. The table following this section is target-phase-only; for nonmatches, consult the full matrix in the overview. The worked chart tables below show two distinct phase rows, so compare Day Master phase and pillar stem phase separately before drawing any interpretation.
| Reference stem | Conception branch | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 酉 | forward |
| 乙 | 申 | reverse |
| 丙 | 子 | forward |
| 丁 | 亥 | reverse |
| 戊 | 子 | forward |
| 己 | 亥 | reverse |
| 庚 | 卯 | forward |
| 辛 | 寅 | reverse |
| 壬 | 午 | forward |
| 癸 | 巳 | reverse |
四 When the reading changes
Month Conception with a Hidden Officer
In chart A, the month pillar is Xin at You, and the Day Master Jia meets You as Conception (Tai). The lookup is simple: Jia forward reaches You at the eleventh phase. You hides only Xin, Jia's Direct Officer, at weight 1. That hidden Officer is a relationship label, not a promise of promotion. The same branch also carries a second phase row: the pillar stem Xin at You is Adulthood, because Xin reverse reaches You at Lin Guan. Two labels coexist because one row follows the Day Master and the other follows the pillar stem. Check both rows before interpreting anything.
Hour Conception and the Reference Change
Chart B places Gui at You in the hour. For Jia, You is still Conception, so the phase repeats even though the column changed. Changing the column does not change the phase of an identical reference-stem and branch pair. What changes is the reference: Gui at You is Sickness, since Gui reverse reaches You at Bing. The hidden stem stays Xin, Direct Officer, weight 1, because changing the reference does not change branch hidden stems. This is why choosing the reference stem matters before reading any phase label.
Hidden Root and Resource Are Not the Same
You hides Xin, metal, which is not a Wood root for Jia. A same-element root would require Wood hidden in the branch; You offers none. In chart B the month is Gui at Chou, where Chou hides Ji, Gui and Xin at weights 1, 0.5 and 0.3. Gui is Jia's Direct Resource, but that resource sits in Chou, not in You. Do not transfer it to the Conception pillar. The phase label describes the reference stem against the branch; the hidden stems describe what the branch contains. Keep those two calculations separate and the reading stays bounded.
Unknown Time and the Full Cycle
If the hour is unknown, the You Conception reading in chart B cannot be placed, but the month and day rows remain. Conception follows Extinction and precedes Gestation; the cycle continues from Gestation back to Birth, so Tai is formation and potential, not a guaranteed new beginning or event. It is not Yang Gestation, and it is not Chang Sheng Birth. Phase names are traditional symbolic vocabulary, not health or life predictions. Record the reference stem, branch, direction and hidden weights, then stop at the calculation rather than converting the label into a real-life period.
五 Worked chart examples
These two calendar-screened teaching charts share a Jia Wood Day Master. They are not client histories or predictions, and several placements differ between them.

| Stem | 戊 | 辛 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 辰 | 酉 | 戌 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Indirect Wealth | Direct Officer | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.5) 癸 Direct Resource (0.3) |
辛 Direct Officer (1) | 戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 衰 Decline | 胎 Conception | 养 Gestation | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 冠带 Youth | 临官 Adulthood | 养 Gestation | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1.5, Fire 1.3, Earth 4.3, Metal 3, Water 0.3.
Teaching Chart A: Conception at the Month Branch
In chart A, the Day Master is Jia, and the target phase is Conception (Tai 胎), the eleventh stage, sitting between Extinction and Gestation. The lookup pairs Jia with You in the forward direction, and the month branch is exactly You. So the month position carries Jia's Conception phase. This is symbolic formation and potential, not pregnancy, fertility, or childbirth timing.
Compare the visible month stem: Xin at You is in Adulthood (Lin Guan), Xin's own-phase for that branch. Two labels coexist on one branch because the growth phase depends on the reference stem, not the branch alone. Changing the reference stem changes the phase label; changing the column does not change the phase of an identical stem-branch pair.
Inspect hidden stems: You hides only Xin at weight 1, a Direct Officer to Jia. There is no Wood root inside You, so the branch does not root Jia. It does contain Metal, the element of the Xin Officer. A hidden Officer label does not promise promotion, and Conception does not guarantee a new beginning or event.
One contrasting position in chart A is the hour Ji at Si: Jia at Si is Sickness, while Ji at Si is Emperor. Same branch, different reference stem, different phase. The day branch Xu, by contrast, is Gestation for Jia, the stage after Conception, not the same phase.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 丁 | 癸 | 甲 | 癸 |
| Branch | 卯 | 丑 | 子 | 酉 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Direct Resource | Day Master | Direct Resource |
| Hidden stems | 乙 Rob Wealth (1) | 己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
癸 Direct Resource (1) | 辛 Direct Officer (1) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 帝旺 Emperor | 冠带 Youth | 沐浴 Bath | 胎 Conception |
| Own pillar stem phase | 病 Sickness | 冠带 Youth | 沐浴 Bath | 病 Sickness |
Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 1, Earth 1, Metal 1.3, Water 3.5.
Chart B: Hour Conception, Month Youth
Chart B has pillars 丁卯, 癸丑, 甲子, 癸酉. The Day Master is Jia 甲. Its hour branch is You 酉, and the Jia-to-You lookup gives Conception (Tai 胎). The month branch is Chou 丑, which for Jia gives Youth (Guan Dai 冠带), not Conception. So the target phase sits in the hour, while the month carries a different label.
Phase lookup uses the reference stem against the branch. Here the reference is Jia, the Day Master, so Jia at You is Conception. The hour stem is Gui 癸, and Gui at You is Sickness (Bing 病). That is the own-hour-stem calculation: it does not match the Jia result. The month stem is also Gui, and Gui at Chou is Youth, matching the Jia-at-Chou label by coincidence of this pair, not by rule.
Hidden stems matter separately. the 酉 branch and its hidden stems contain only Xin 辛, weight 1, a Direct Officer to Jia. You hides no Wood, so Jia finds no same-element root there. Jia's root appears elsewhere: the year branch Mao 卯 hides Yi 乙, Rob Wealth, weight 1. Resource also appears in Chou and Zi, where Gui is hidden at weights 0.5 and 1.
The hidden Officer label does not promise promotion, and Conception does not guarantee a new beginning or event. It is symbolic formation, not pregnancy, fertility, or medical evidence.
Reader Check
- Identify the Day Master and the branch to test.
- Look up that stem against that branch in the phase matrix.
- Repeat with the pillar's own stem; check whether the label differs or coincides.
- List branch hidden stems and their Ten Gods separately.
- Check whether a same-element root exists elsewhere before reading potential.
六 What the lookup counts
In this table, each of the ten reference stems assigns Conception to exactly one of the twelve branches: ten cells out of the 120 stem–branch lookup cells. This is a property of the lookup grid, not the percentage of people, births or complete charts containing the phase. The convention is Yang forward, Yin reverse and Earth following Fire. Record the reference stem and pillar position before interpreting a match.
