一 What it is
What the Death Phase Means
Death (Si 死) is the eighth phase in the twelve-stage growth cycle, marking the point where one symbolic mode of growth ceases rather than any physical death, lifespan, loss, health, or mortality. Think of a tree that has finished producing new leaves for the season: the leaves remain, the trunk stands, but the push of fresh expansion has stopped.
Its imagery is quiet cessation. The phase sits after Sickness (Bing 病) and before Grave (Mu 墓), completing a movement from decline into stillness. It is not the branch Si 巳; for a Jia 甲 Day Master, Death falls on Wu 午, while Si 巳 is Sickness. In the same month Wu 午, a Wu 戊 stem reaches Emperor (Di Wang 帝旺), showing that one reference stem can rest in Death while another peaks in the same branch.
Wu 午 hides Ding 丁 (Hurting Officer) and Ji 己 (Direct Wealth) relative to Jia; neither hidden stem is Wood. Yet hidden resources and roots elsewhere remain present, so Death cannot zero out all Wood or decide whole-chart weakness. The phase is a traditional symbolic label, not a health or life prediction, and its key limitation is that it describes one reference-stem/branch lookup only.

二 Where to find it in your chart
Where Death (Si) Appears in the Interface
Death (Si) is the eighth phase, after Sickness (Bing) and before Grave (Mu). It is not the Si 巳 Snake branch. For Jia the Death branch is Wu 午, not 巳. Read it as the cessation of one symbolic growth mode, not physical death, lifespan, loss, health or mortality.
Your Four Pillars shows the Day stem above the Day branch, with hidden stems as small characters. Element balance gives weighted totals; Day Master strength gives a separate scored estimate. The current main UI has no dedicated Twelve Growth Phases row, so copy the reference stem and target branch into the table below. To calculate your chart, first confirm each pillar stem and branch.
Input Checklist
- Day stem and all four branches, including hidden stems.
- Reference stem for each phase lookup; target branch for each column.
- Unknown hour: leave the hour reading unconfirmed.
- Weights 1, 0.5, 0.3 are calculator convention, not new scores.
In chart A, Jia at month Wu is Death while month stem Wu 戊 at 午 is Emperor. Wu 午 hides Ding Hurting Officer and Ji Direct Wealth relative to Jia; neither is Wood. In chart B, Jia at hour Wu is Death while visible Geng at 午 is Bath. Hidden resources or roots elsewhere remain present; Death cannot zero out all Wood or decide whole-chart weakness. Changing column does not change the phase of an identical reference-stem/branch pair. Changing reference does not change branch hidden stems. Ten Gods are relationships to Jia; growth phases are reference-stem/branch lookup. Same-element root is not same-stem root. Yang forward, yin reverse, Earth follows Fire here. The table is target-phase-only, not a complete matrix or interactive calculator; later worked-chart tables show both Jia-phase and own-pillar-stem phase rows.
三 How to read it
How to Look Up the Death Phase
Death (Si 死) is the eighth growth phase, following Sickness (Bing 病) and preceding Grave (Mu 墓). It is a phase label, not a statement about physical death, lifespan, health, or mortality. Treat it as the cessation of one symbolic growth mode: the reference stem's forward momentum in that branch has ended, even though other resources and roots may remain active elsewhere in the chart. The phase is found by matching a reference stem to a branch using the traditional sequence: Yang stems move forward, yin stems reverse, and Earth follows Fire in this convention.
Do not confuse Si 死 with the Si 巳 branch. They share a pinyin sound but are different concepts. For Jia 甲, the Death branch is Wu 午, not Si 巳. Jia at Wu is Death; Jia at Si is Sickness. The same lookup applies to any column: if the reference stem and branch pair are identical, the phase is identical, regardless of position. Changing the column does not change the phase of an identical stem-branch pair, and changing the reference stem does not change the branch's hidden stems.
Three comparisons clarify the method. First, in a Jia chart with a Wu 午 month, Jia reaches Death while the visible month stem Wu 戊 at Wu 午 is Emperor. The day master's phase and the pillar stem's phase are separate lookups. Second, in a Jia chart with a Geng 庚 hour at Wu 午, Jia reaches Death while Geng at Wu is Bath. Third, Wu 午 hides Ding 丁 (Hurting Officer relative to Jia) and Ji 己 (Direct Wealth relative to Jia); neither hidden stem is Wood. This does not erase Wood elsewhere: a Jia day master may still have a same-element root such as Yi 乙 in another branch, and that root remains present. Same-element root is not the same as same-stem root, and Death cannot zero out all Wood or by itself decide whole-chart weakness.
The target-phase table below lists only branches that produce Death for each reference stem. It is a lookup aid, not a complete matrix. For nonmatching stems or branches, consult the full Twelve Growth Phases overview. Worked chart tables below show two distinct phase rows: one chart places Jia at Death in the month, another places Jia at Death in the hour, while other columns show different phases. Weights such as 1, 0.5, and 0.3 are calculator conventions for hidden stems, not phase values.

四 When the reading changes
Month Wu for Jia: Death Phase, Not a Verdict on Wood
In chart A, the month pillar is 戊午 with 甲 as Day Master. Look up Jia against Wu: the result is Death (Si 死), the eighth phase. The same branch also gives the month stem 戊 a phase of Emperor at 午, so one branch carries two different phase rows. Wu hides 丁 Hurting Officer and 己 Direct Wealth relative to Jia; neither hidden stem is Wood. That tells you the branch does not feed the Day Master through same-element roots, but it does not erase the 乙 Rob Wealth and 癸 Direct Resource hidden in the two 辰 branches. Read the phase as a symbolic mode, then check roots separately.
Hour Wu for Jia: Position Changes, Phase Pair Does Not
Chart B places 庚午 in the hour with the same 甲 Day Master. Jia at Wu is again Death, while the visible 庚 at 午 is Bath. Moving Wu from month to hour changes which pillar carries the label and which Ten God sits on top, but it cannot change the Jia–Wu lookup. This is the repeatable check: fix the reference stem, fix the branch, read the phase. When you are choosing the reference stem, decide whether you are reading the Day Master or the pillar stem, because 甲 and 庚 produce different phases on the same 午.
Hidden Roots and Resources Outside the Death Branch
Death describes one growth mode, not the total Wood supply. In chart B, 卯 hides 乙 Rob Wealth, 子 hides 癸 Direct Resource, and 丑 hides 癸 Direct Resource plus 辛 Direct Officer. Those roots and resources sit in other branches and remain present regardless of the hour Wu label. A same-element root is not the same as a same-stem root, and the calculator weights of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 are conventions for comparing hidden stems, not proof that Wood disappears. Use Death to note where Jia's growth mode has ceased in that branch, then inspect the remaining branches before calling the whole chart weak.
Unknown Hour: Read the Known Pillars First
If the hour is unknown, you cannot assign an hour pillar or its phase. Work with year, month, and day only, and state clearly that the hour row is absent. In chart A, the month Wu still gives Jia Death, and the year and day 辰 branches still hide 乙 and 癸. Do not guess an hour branch to complete the pattern. The phase label is traditional symbolic vocabulary, not a health or lifespan prediction; its useful role is to flag that a particular branch does not operate as a growth root for the chosen reference stem.
五 Worked chart examples
These two calendar-screened teaching charts share a Jia Wood Day Master. They are not client histories or predictions, and several placements differ between them.

Teaching Chart A: Jia at Month Wu
In chart A the month branch is 午 (Wu), and for a 甲 (Jia) Day Master the Death phase (死, Si) falls exactly there. This is the eighth stage, following Sickness (病) and preceding Grave (墓). The name is symbolic vocabulary for the cessation of one growth mode, not physical death, lifespan, health, or mortality.
Do not confuse the phase 死 (Si) with the branch 巳 (Si) — the Snake. For Jia the Death branch is 午, not 巳. The hour branch here is 巳, and Jia's phase at 巳 is Sickness, one stage earlier.
Compare the month stem's own phase. The visible month stem is 戊 (Wu, Indirect Wealth), and 戊 at 午 is Emperor (帝旺) — its strongest phase. So the same pillar shows Jia at Death while the stem's own reference sits at Emperor. Phase is a stem-to-branch lookup, so the two readings coexist without contradiction.
Inspect the hidden stems of 午: 丁 (Hurting Officer, weight 1) and 己 (Direct Wealth, weight 0.5). Relative to Jia, neither is Wood, so this branch offers no same-element root. That does not zero out Wood elsewhere: the year and day 辰 pillars hide 乙 (Rob Wealth) and 癸 (Direct Resource), and the hour 巳 hides 庚 (Seven Killings) and 丙 (Eating God). Hidden resources and roots in other columns remain present, so Death at one position cannot by itself decide whole-chart weakness.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 丁 | 癸 | 甲 | 庚 |
| Branch | 卯 | 丑 | 子 | 午 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Direct Resource | Day Master | Seven Killings |
| Hidden stems | 乙 Rob Wealth (1) | 己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
癸 Direct Resource (1) | 丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 帝旺 Emperor | 冠带 Youth | 沐浴 Bath | 死 Death |
| Own pillar stem phase | 病 Sickness | 冠带 Youth | 沐浴 Bath | 沐浴 Bath |
Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 2, Earth 1.5, Metal 1.3, Water 2.5.
Teaching Chart B: Death at the Hour
Chart B runs 丁卯 / 癸丑 / 甲子 / 庚午, with Jia 甲 as Day Master. The hour branch Wu 午 is Jia's Death (Si 死) position: the eighth phase, after Sickness and before Grave. Note that Si 死 is a phase name, not the Si 巳 branch; Jia's Death branch is Wu 午, never 巳. Here the phase belongs to the hour branch, while the hour stem Geng 庚 is read separately: Geng at Wu 午 sits in Bath (Mu Yu 沐浴), not Death. This is why one column can carry two different phase rows.
Compare Chart A, where Jia meets Wu 午 in the month pillar: same reference stem, same branch, same Death label. Changing the column does not change the phase of an identical stem-branch pair. Chart A's month stem Wu 戊 at 午 is Emperor (Di Wang 帝旺), while Chart B's hour stem Geng at 午 is Bath. The stem reference changed, so the phase changed.
Inside the 午 branch and its hidden stems, Wu 午 hides Ding 丁 (Hurting Officer) and Ji 己 (Direct Wealth) relative to Jia. Neither hidden stem is Wood, so this branch offers Jia no same-element root. Yet Death does not erase the chart: year branch Mao 卯 holds Yi 乙 (Rob Wealth), a Wood root, and month branch Chou 丑 plus day branch Zi 子 carry Gui 癸 (Direct Resource), which supports Jia. Hidden resources and roots elsewhere remain present, so one Death label cannot zero out all Wood or decide whole-chart weakness.
Repeatable reader check: identify the reference stem, find its branch, read the phase from the matrix, then list hidden stems and any Wood roots or resource support in the remaining pillars before drawing conclusions.
六 What the lookup counts
In this table, each of the ten reference stems assigns Death to exactly one of the twelve branches: ten cells out of the 120 stem–branch lookup cells. This is a property of the lookup grid, not the percentage of people, births or complete charts containing the phase. The convention is Yang forward, Yin reverse and Earth following Fire. Record the reference stem and pillar position before interpreting a match.
