一 What is the difference?
Direct Officer and Seven Killings are the two faces of the element that controls the Day Master. For Jia Yang Wood, Xin Yin Metal is Direct Officer because its polarity opposes Jia; Geng Yang Metal is Seven Killings because its polarity matches Jia. Both are Metal, so both represent authority, discipline, and external standards pressing on Wood. The difference is polarity: opposite-polarity control tends to feel like a rule or office that can be negotiated; same-polarity control tends to feel like direct pressure that demands a decisive response. A useful analogy is a workplace: Direct Officer is the written policy manual, while Seven Killings is the urgent deadline from a demanding supervisor. Traditional interpretation associates Direct Officer with orderly procedure and Seven Killings with concentrated pressure and resolve. These are interpretive associations, not fixed personality traits, and neither label is inherently good or bad. Seeing both labels in a chart does not by itself establish a mixed structure or a verdict about the chart. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
二 Where to find each in your chart
Reading Authority Labels in the Four Pillars
Open https://bazi-calculator.org/, enter birth date, time, and place; if the hour is unknown, choose I don’t know the hour. Read the Day stem first: it is the Day Master, the reference for every label. Then inspect the other three visible stems and the hidden stems inside each branch.
Each pillar has a top stem, a bottom branch, and hidden characters within that branch. The top stem is visible and weighs 1.0. Hidden stems sit in list positions with weights 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3; these are positional weights, not inherent strength. The Day Master itself is never counted as Friend. A hidden Jia, however, contributes Friend.
Labels depend on the Day Master. For Jia Wood, Xin Yin Metal is Direct Officer; Geng Yang Metal is Seven Killings. Change the Day Master from Jia Yang Wood to Yi Yin Wood, and these two Metal stems swap labels. Traditional associations contrast formal standards with concentrated pressure and decisive response, not virtue versus vice.
Finding both labels does not by itself establish a mixed structure or a bad chart. Read components before citing numbers, and never treat absence as a personal deficit. Start at Bazi Calculator.
Day column, top character: 甲 = Day Master. Check the other visible stems and each branch’s hidden stems separately.
辛 → Direct Officer; 庚 → Seven Killings. Exclude only the visible Day Master from the totals below.
三 How to read the pair
How to Compare Direct Officer and Seven Killings
Start with the element relationship, then the polarity. Both Direct Officer and Seven Killings belong to the Officer family: the element that controls the Day Master. For Jia Yang Wood, that controlling element is Metal. The split is polarity. Xin Yin Metal is opposite in polarity to Jia, so it is Direct Officer. Geng Yang Metal shares Jia's polarity, so it is Seven Killings. Apply this order to any Day Master using the all-day-master table below.
- Jia: Direct Officer 辛, Seven Killings 庚
- Yi: Direct Officer 庚, Seven Killings 辛
- Bing: Direct Officer 癸, Seven Killings 壬
- Ding: Direct Officer 壬, Seven Killings 癸
- Wu: Direct Officer 乙, Seven Killings 甲
- Ji: Direct Officer 甲, Seven Killings 乙
- Geng: Direct Officer 丁, Seven Killings 丙
- Xin: Direct Officer 丙, Seven Killings 丁
- Ren: Direct Officer 己, Seven Killings 戊
- Gui: Direct Officer 戊, Seven Killings 己
Next, read root visibility. A stem can appear visibly in the Four Pillars or only inside a hidden stem list. In the first example, 辛酉 丙申 甲申 乙丑, Direct Officer shows one visible 辛 in the year plus hidden 辛 in year and hour; Seven Killings shows two hidden 庚, in month and day. In the second, 甲子 庚午 甲戌 乙丑, Seven Killings shows one visible 庚 in the month, while Direct Officer shows only hidden 辛 in day and hour.
Then count in two ways. The visible count records non-day visible stems only. The weighted count additionally includes hidden stems, even when they match the Day Master. The weighted count uses 1.0 for each visible stem and 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 by position in each hidden list. These weights are positional, not inherent strength. In example one, Direct Officer weighs 2.3 and Seven Killings 2.0; in example two, Seven Killings 1.0 and Direct Officer 0.8.
Finally, interpret carefully. Counts are not strength, and season is not inferred from counts. Finding both labels does not by itself establish a named mixed structure or a bad chart. Traditionally, Direct Officer is associated with formal standards and Seven Killings with concentrated pressure and decisive response; these are interpretive associations, not verdicts. See Direct Officer and Seven Killings.
For Jia Wood, a visible Xin Yin Metal is Direct Officer, while a visible Geng Yang Metal is Seven Killings, yet the same visible non-day stem can sit over a branch whose hidden stem carries the other label, so one pillar is not a single undivided ten-god label. The Day Master remains the reference for both layers: a visible Day Master is labelled Day Master, not counted as Friend, while any other visible or hidden Jia counts as Friend. To annotate, mark the visible stem layer and the hidden branch layer separately, naming each stem by its relation to the Day Master, then note where the two layers differ. This keeps formal standards and concentrated pressure distinct without turning either into virtue or vice, safety or danger, obedience or criminality, violence forecasts, fixed careers, or moral assessment. The presence of both labels does not itself establish a named mixed structure or a bad chart, and no officer-killings mixing verdict follows; Seven Killings is not a literal threat.
| Day Master | Direct Officer | Seven Killings |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 辛 | 庚 |
| 乙 | 庚 | 辛 |
| 丙 | 癸 | 壬 |
| 丁 | 壬 | 癸 |
| 戊 | 乙 | 甲 |
| 己 | 甲 | 乙 |
| 庚 | 丁 | 丙 |
| 辛 | 丙 | 丁 |
| 壬 | 己 | 戊 |
| 癸 | 戊 | 己 |
四 When the comparison changes
Visible Versus Hidden: Reading the Layer Before the Label
Start with the layer, not the label. A Direct Officer or Seven Killings can appear as a visible stem in the Four Pillars or only inside a hidden stem. For Jia Wood, Xin Yin Metal is Direct Officer and Geng Yang Metal is Seven Killings. In the first example chart, the year stem 辛 is visible Direct Officer, while 庚 appears only as hidden stems in the month and day branches. The visible count for Direct Officer is 1; the weighted count is 2.3 because the hidden 辛 in the year branch adds 1.0 and the hidden 辛 in the hour branch adds 0.3. Seven Killings shows 0 visible but 2.0 weighted from two hidden 庚 at 1.0 each. Checking both layers prevents a hidden stem from being treated as absent and a visible stem from being treated as the whole story. Traditional association: visible authority is often read as more openly expressed; hidden authority as more situational. Treat that as interpretive, not a verdict.
One Versus Both: Labels Can Coexist Without a Fixed Structure
Finding both Direct Officer and Seven Killings does not by itself establish a named mixed structure or a bad chart. In the second example chart, 庚 is visible in the month, giving Seven Killings a visible count of 1 and a weighted count of 1.0. Direct Officer has 0 visible but 0.8 weighted from hidden 辛 at 0.5 and 0.3. The two labels coexist, yet their layers and weights differ. Read each component before citing a combined number. Traditional contrast: Direct Officer is associated with formal standards, Seven Killings with concentrated pressure and decisive response. That contrast is not virtue versus vice, safe versus dangerous, obedient versus criminal, or a violence forecast. Presence of both labels does not itself establish an officer-killings mixing verdict.
Numerical Weighting Versus Actual Strength
Weights are per hidden list position: 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3, while all other visible stems count 1.0. These are counting conventions, not inherent strength. A weighted total of 2.3 for Direct Officer in the first chart does not mean the chart is strong in authority; it means the counted components sum that way. Likewise, Seven Killings at 2.0 weighted from hidden stems is not automatically stronger than a visible 1.0. The Day Master is the visible day stem and is not counted as Friend. A hidden Jia contributes Friend, but that is a separate category. Do not equate quantities with strong or weak, and do not interpret absence as a personal deficit. Compare visible and weighted counts side by side, then read the hidden-stem components that produced them.
Positions and the Unknown Hour
Position changes what is being counted. In the first chart, Direct Officer appears at the year and hour; Seven Killings at the month and day. In the second, Seven Killings is at the month and Direct Officer at the day and hour. If the hour is unknown, the hour pillar cannot be read, so any component in that slot is unavailable. That can remove a visible stem or a hidden stem and change both the visible and weighted counts. Check which slots remain before citing numbers. Traditional association: year and month are often read as earlier or more public contexts, day and hour as closer or later contexts. That is interpretive, not a rule about outcomes. Use the Four Pillars and hidden stems only; no Stars section is needed to perform these checks.
五 Worked chart examples
These teaching charts were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or assert life events. Visible counts and hidden-stem weighted totals agree on the numerical emphasis in each example; neither is an overall strength verdict.
| Position | year | month | day | hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 丙 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 酉 | 申 | 申 | 丑 |
| Ten god | Direct Officer | Eating God | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 辛 Direct Officer (1) | 庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Rob Wealth 1.0; Eating God 1.0; Indirect Wealth 0.6; Direct Wealth 1.0; Seven Killings 2.0; Direct Officer 2.3; Indirect Resource 1.0; Direct Resource 0.5.
Visible non-day stems — Direct Officer: 1; Seven Killings: 0.
Chart A: Jia Wood Day Master
Chart A has pillars 辛酉, 丙申, 甲申, 乙丑. The visible day stem 甲 is the Day Master and is not counted as Friend. For Jia Yang Wood, 辛 Yin Metal is Direct Officer and 庚 Yang Metal is Seven Killings. Both belong to the Officer family, the element that controls the Day Master.
Trace the compared pair exactly. Direct Officer 辛 appears once visibly, at the year stem, weight 1.0. It also appears hidden twice: year branch 酉, weight 1.0, and hour branch 丑, weight 0.3. Seven Killings 庚 appears hidden twice: month branch 申, weight 1.0, and day branch 申, weight 1.0. No 庚 is visible. Visible count: Direct Officer 1, Seven Killings 0. Weighted count: Direct Officer 2.3, Seven Killings 2.0. The weighted gap is 0.3, so Direct Officer carries a mild numerical emphasis within this pair. This is a count comparison only, not a statement about overall chart strength.
Three relationships follow from these components. First, 辛 and 庚 both control Jia Wood, so the pair shares one family; the traditional association is formal standards for 辛 and concentrated pressure with decisive response for 庚. Second, 丙 Eating God is visible at the month stem, weight 1.0, and 丙 controls metal, giving the chart a visible counterweight to the Officer pair. Third, 乙 Rob Wealth is visible at the hour stem, weight 1.0, while hidden 戊 Indirect Wealth totals 0.6 and hidden 己 Direct Wealth totals 1.0; the traditional reading is that peer presence and Wealth components accompany the authority pair. Finding both 辛 and 庚 labels does not by itself establish a named mixed structure or a verdict about the chart.
| Position | year | month | day | hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 甲 | 庚 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 子 | 午 | 戌 | 丑 |
| Ten god | Friend | Seven Killings | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 癸 Direct Resource (1) | 丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 1.0; Hurting Officer 1.3; Indirect Wealth 1.0; Direct Wealth 1.5; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.8; Direct Resource 1.5.
Visible non-day stems — Direct Officer: 0; Seven Killings: 1.
Chart B: Visible Authority, Weighted Support
Chart B (甲子, 庚午, 甲戌, 乙丑) places Seven Killings (庚) visibly in the month stem, while Direct Officer (辛) appears only as hidden stems in the day and hour branches. The visible layer therefore emphasizes Seven Killings at 1.0, with Direct Officer contributing 0.5 and 0.3 from hidden positions. Weighted totals agree with this: Direct Officer reaches 0.8, Seven Killings 1.0, so the two remain close rather than one dominating. The Day Master is Jia Yang Wood; the visible day stem is not counted as Friend. Friend appears visibly in the year stem (甲, 1.0), and Rob Wealth visibly in the hour stem (乙, 1.0). Hidden Jia would contribute Friend, but none is present here.
Contrast with Chart A
Chart A (辛酉, 丙申, 甲申, 乙丑) places Direct Officer visibly in the year stem (辛, 1.0), with additional hidden Xin at 1.0 and 0.3. Seven Killings appears only hidden, at 1.0 in both month and day branches. Visible emphasis favors Direct Officer; weighted totals also favor it, 2.3 against 2.0. Chart B reverses both layers: Seven Killings becomes visible while Direct Officer becomes hidden, and the weighted edge shifts to Seven Killings. The reversal follows position changes, not inherent strength in the labels themselves. Weights of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 reflect per hidden list position, while all other visible stems count 1.0; these are not measures of inherent strength.
Traditional associations treat Direct Officer as formal standards and Seven Killings as concentrated pressure and decisive response. Finding both labels does not by itself establish a mixed structure or a verdict. For further reading, see Direct Officer and Seven Killings.
六 How often do the two labels coexist?
Within the 51,840 combinations whose Day Master is Jia 甲, presence means at least one matching visible non-day stem or hidden stem. This conditional subset contains 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 6 Jia day pillars × 12 hour slots, with valid derived stems. It is not the full 518,400-combination space for all Day Masters.
| Configuration | Combinations | Proportion |
|---|---|---|
| Neither | 3,200 | 6.1728% |
| Direct Officer only | 15,025 | 28.9834% |
| Seven Killings only | 10,280 | 19.8302% |
| Both | 23,335 | 45.0135% |
These are equal-weight combination-space proportions, not percentages of people, income outcomes, personality types or birth-registry frequencies. A hidden occurrence counts as presence even when no matching stem is visible above the branches. Only the visible Day Master is excluded. Repeated occurrences do not increase the number of charts counted.
