一 What it is
What Seasonal Combinations Are
An Earthly Branch Seasonal Combination is a fixed set of three adjacent branches that together cover one season. The supplied lookup contains exactly four such frames: 寅–卯–辰 for Wood and Spring, 巳–午–未 for Fire and Summer, 申–酉–戌 for Metal and Autumn, and 亥–子–丑 for Water and Winter. Each frame is a complete sequence, not a loose group of any three branches. For the underlying framework, see Earthly Branches in Bazi: The Twelve Characters and Their Hidden Stems.
These frames differ from Three Combinations, which link branches spread across the cycle rather than three neighbours in a row. A detected frame means only that all three listed characters coexist in the chart. It is an observable pattern, not proof that the chart transformed, and not a strength verdict or a prediction. The direction label — Wood, Fire, Metal or Water — is a traditional association, not evidence that anything actually changed.
Think of a weather station logging three neighbouring sensors across one season. The log confirms the sensors were all active together; it does not tell you whether the season was mild, harsh or decisive for anything else. Reading the pattern is the first step, not the conclusion.
In the sample charts, 寅–卯–辰 appears in one and 申–酉–戌 in another. Both are simply recorded matches. Any deeper judgement belongs to fuller analysis, never to the frame alone.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read the Stem and Branch Rows
Open your Four Pillars result and find the four columns labelled Year, Month, Day and Hour. Each column holds two rows: the upper row is the Heavenly Stem and the lower row is the Earthly Branch. Read downward within a column to see one pillar, and read across a row to compare characters between pillars.
Check the branch row for adjacent seasonal sequences. A detected frame such as 寅–卯–辰 (Wood / Spring) or 申–酉–戌 (Metal / Autumn) means only that those three characters coexist in your chart. The direction label is traditional, not proof that any element transformed.
Two practical points matter. First, the same character may appear more than once, so count each occurrence separately. Second, if your birth time is unknown, the Hour slot is removed entirely; no Hour Stem or Hour Branch is invented.
Boundaries also affect placement. Year and Month use China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time. A birth near midnight or a month boundary can therefore shift which pillar receives a character.

三 How to identify it
How to Identify a Seasonal Combination
A Seasonal Combination is a set of three adjacent Earthly Branches that together carry one season's element direction. The lookup table lists four complete sets: 寅–卯–辰 for Wood and Spring, 巳–午–未 for Fire and Summer, 申–酉–戌 for Metal and Autumn, and 亥–子–丑 for Water and Winter. Each set contains the first, middle and last month of its season, which is why the branches sit next to one another in the standard cycle. The method is easier to compare with Earthly Branch Three Combinations: The Four Three-Harmony Frames in Bazi.
To identify one, follow a repeatable procedure. First, list every branch in the chart by position: year, month, day and hour. Second, compare that list against each row of the lookup table. Third, record which members appear and where they sit. A detected frame means only that all listed characters coexist in the chart; it is not a verdict about strength, balance or outcome.
Membership can be complete or partial. Complete membership means all three branches of a row are present, as in 寅–卯–辰 or 申–酉–戌. Partial membership means only one or two members appear, so the seasonal pattern is incomplete. Both cases are observations about co-presence, not conclusions. Positions matter because a branch in the month pillar, day pillar or hour pillar occupies a different place in the chart, and the same three branches can appear in more than one arrangement.
An associated element direction is a traditional label attached to the set. Wood, Fire, Metal and Water name the season each frame belongs to. This label does not prove that any character transformed into that element, and it does not establish a transformation. An established transformation would require separate conditions, and this calculator does not invent or apply such tests. Treat the direction as a naming convention, not as evidence that a change occurred.
Keep two cautions in view. First, a complete sequence is an observable pattern, not an automatic strength verdict. Second, raw five-element totals and weighted Ten-God totals are separate summaries; the visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. Use the lookup table, list the positions, note complete or partial membership, and describe the associated direction without claiming a transformation.
| Traditional relation | Members | Associated direction |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Combination | 寅–卯–辰 | Wood / Spring |
| Seasonal Combination | 巳–午–未 | Fire / Summer |
| Seasonal Combination | 申–酉–戌 | Metal / Autumn |
| Seasonal Combination | 亥–子–丑 | Water / Winter |
四 When the reading changes
Complete versus incomplete membership
A Seasonal Combination is defined by three adjacent branches: 寅–卯–辰 for Wood and Spring, 巳–午–未 for Fire and Summer, 申–酉–戌 for Metal and Autumn, and 亥–子–丑 for Water and Winter. The first check is simply whether all three members appear anywhere among the four branches. If one is missing, the frame is incomplete, and the calculator should not report a detected seasonal combination. If all three are present, the detected pair or frame means only that the listed characters coexist in the chart. That coexistence is an observable pattern, not an automatic strength verdict or proof of transformation. The associated element direction is a traditional label attached to the full sequence, not evidence that any character changed into another element. This point connects directly with Earthly Branch Six Clashes: How to Identify and Read Bazi Clashes Carefully.
Repeated members
Sometimes a branch appears more than once, so a chart may contain 寅, 卯, 卯 and 辰, for example. The membership test still asks whether each of the three required branches is present at least once. Repetition does not create a second seasonal combination, and it does not upgrade the first one into something stronger. A concrete check is to list the distinct branches in the four positions, then compare that set with the required trio. If the set contains all three, the frame is complete; if it contains only two, it is incomplete. Treat the extra copy as additional weight for that branch in any raw count, but keep the combination label separate from questions of overall strength.
Coexistence with another listed relation
A chart can show a complete seasonal sequence while also containing branches that form a different listed relation, such as a Three Combinations frame or a clash pair. Coexistence is not a contest that one relation automatically wins. The practical check is to record each detected relation independently: note its members, its traditional direction label, and the positions involved. Then note that the same branch may participate in more than one pattern. The limited significance is that the chart contains multiple observable groupings at once. It does not establish which grouping dominates, and it does not authorize a prediction about events, character or health.
Unknown hour or boundary uncertainty
If the hour is unknown, there is no invented Hour Pillar, so the branch set contains only three positions. A seasonal combination that would have required the missing branch cannot be confirmed; it should be marked as unresolved rather than detected or absent. Boundary uncertainty works differently. Year and Month use China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time, so a birth near midnight or near a solar-term change can shift which branch belongs to which pillar. The concrete check is to compare the chart under the stated time assumptions and see whether the required trio still appears. If the membership changes, report the frame as uncertain. Raw five-element totals and weighted Ten-God totals remain separate from this membership question, and neither total is a strength verdict.

Chart A: Reading the Wood Seasonal Combination
Chart A has four pillars: 甲子, 丁卯, 甲寅 and 戊辰. Its listed match is a Seasonal Combination: 寅–卯–辰, labelled Wood / Spring. A seasonal combination is simply an adjacent seasonal sequence. Here, the month branch 卯, the day branch 寅 and the hour branch 辰 appear together, so all three listed characters coexist in the visible branches.
Trace each member directly. The month pillar 丁卯 supplies 卯. The day pillar 甲寅 supplies 寅. The hour pillar 戊辰 supplies 辰. The year branch 子 is not part of this sequence. The match therefore rests on three visible branches, not on hidden stems or on the year pillar.
The direction label “Wood / Spring” is traditional. It does not prove that the chart transformed, and it is not an automatic strength verdict. The five-element totals are Wood 4.5, Fire 1.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 0 and Water 1.3. These raw totals describe the supplied calculation; they should not be read as a final judgment of the Day Master.
Ten-God totals offer another view. Friend is 2, Rob Wealth 1.5, Eating God 0.5, Hurting Officer 1, Indirect Wealth 2.3, Direct Wealth 0, Seven Killings 0, Direct Officer 0, Indirect Resource 0 and Direct Resource 1.3. The visible Day Master counts in the five-element totals but is excluded only from these weighted Ten-God totals.
Keep the observation separate from interpretation. The sequence 寅–卯–辰 is present; the Wood / Spring label is attached to it. Nothing here establishes a birth story, a personality trait or a future event.

Element totals — Wood 2.0; Fire 2.8; Earth 1.6; Metal 2.5; Water 1.5.
Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 1.0; Eating God 1.5; Hurting Officer 1.3; Indirect Wealth 1.6; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 1.5; Indirect Resource 1.5.
Reading Chart B: A Complete Autumn Frame
Chart B has pillars 丙寅, 丁酉, 甲戌 and 壬申. Its branches are 寅, 酉, 戌 and 申. The listed match is a Seasonal Combination: 申–酉–戌 → Metal / Autumn. This means the three adjacent autumn branches coexist in the chart. It is an observable frame, not proof that the chart transformed into Metal.
Trace the five-element totals: Wood 2, Fire 2.8, Earth 1.6, Metal 2.5 and Water 1.5. These raw totals are not a strength verdict. The visible Day Master 甲 counts in these totals. For weighted Ten-God totals, the Day Master is excluded only from that separate article calculation.
Now trace the Ten-God weights. Friend 1, Rob Wealth 0, Eating God 1.5, Hurting Officer 1.3, Indirect Wealth 1.6, Direct Wealth 0, Seven Killings 1, Direct Officer 1.5, Indirect Resource 1.5 and Direct Resource 0. Hidden stems use the list-order convention: 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3.
Contrast Chart A, whose pillars are 甲子, 丁卯, 甲寅 and 戊辰. Its branches 寅, 卯 and 辰 form the listed Seasonal Combination 寅–卯–辰 → Wood / Spring. Its totals are Wood 4.5, Fire 1.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 0 and Water 1.3. Its Ten-God weights are Friend 2, Rob Wealth 1.5, Eating God 0.5, Hurting Officer 1, Indirect Wealth 2.3, Direct Wealth 0, Seven Killings 0, Direct Officer 0, Indirect Resource 0 and Direct Resource 1.3.
Chart B therefore contains a complete autumn frame, while Chart A contains a complete spring frame. Each associated element direction is a traditional label, not proof of transformation. A repeatable observation: identify the branches, confirm the full sequence, then read the exact totals separately.
六 Base-rate boundary
The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This article covers a family containing several different pairs or frames, so one combined percentage would hide which exact condition was counted.
When a later analysis gives a frequency, read it as an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or birth records. Define one precise pair or complete frame first, then count that condition without treating its presence as an event forecast.
