一 What it is

What Earthly Branch Three Combinations Are

An Earthly Branch is one of the twelve signs that sit beneath each pillar in a Bazi chart. A Three Combination is a fixed family of three branches that, when all three appear, carries a traditional element direction. The supplied lookup contains exactly four such frames: 申–子–辰 labeled Water, 亥–卯–未 labeled Wood, 寅–午–戌 labeled Fire, and 巳–酉–丑 labeled Metal. For the underlying framework, see Earthly Branches in Bazi: The Twelve Characters and Their Hidden Stems.

A complete frame means all three listed characters coexist somewhere in the chart. A partial frame means only two of the three are present. Detection is a matching step: the calculator reports that the characters are there. It is not a transformation test, and it does not overwrite the original hidden stems or the engine totals. The element direction is a traditional label attached to the frame, not proof that the chart changed into that element.

A useful analogy is a weather station logging that three conditions occurred on the same day. The log confirms coexistence; it does not forecast the afternoon, and it does not erase the earlier readings. Likewise, a detected frame is an observation, not a verdict about strength, character, or events.

Keep three ideas separate: detection (the branches are present), transformation (a separate question this calculator does not settle), and prediction (outside the scope of a chart-reading tool).

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Read the Four Pillars

Open your result and find the Four Pillars block. It is arranged as four columns, one per position: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each column holds two rows. The upper row is the stem, a single character such as 甲 or 辛. The lower row is the branch, a single character such as 子 or 未. Read the columns left to right, and read each column top to bottom.

Below the stems and branches you will usually see hidden stems and Ten-God labels. Those belong to the same column, so keep them aligned as you read. A Day Master is simply the stem in the Day column; it is the reference point for the other labels.

Two practical points matter. First, the same character can appear more than once across the four columns, so count occurrences rather than assuming each character is unique. Second, if your birth time is unknown, the Hour column is removed entirely, leaving three columns and no invented Hour Pillar.

Timing also affects which characters appear. Year and Month are calculated using China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time. A birth near midnight or near a solar-term boundary can therefore shift a stem or branch by one slot.

Once you have located the rows, compare the branch characters across all four columns. A Three Combination is detected when all three listed branch characters coexist somewhere in those columns, as a complete frame or as a two-branch partial frame. Detection is a positional observation only; it does not by itself transform the chart or replace the hidden stems and engine totals shown beneath.

三 How to identify it

How to Identify Three Combinations Step by Step

Start with the four Earthly Branch Three Combinations in the lookup table. Each frame has three members and one associated element direction: 申–子–辰 points to Water, 亥–卯–未 to Wood, 寅–午–戌 to Fire, and 巳–酉–丑 to Metal. Read each branch exactly as written; do not substitute similar-looking characters. The method is easier to compare with Earthly Branch Six Combinations: A Practical Guide to the Six Harmonies in Bazi.

Next, list the branch in every available pillar position: year, month, day, and hour. Unknown birth time means no Hour Pillar, so only three positions can be checked. A frame is complete when all three listed members appear somewhere in the chart, regardless of order or adjacency. It is partial when only two of the three members appear. Partial membership is still worth recording, but it is not the same as a complete frame.

Then confirm co-presence. A detected frame means only that all listed characters coexist in the chart. For example, 甲子, 辛未, 甲辰, 壬申 contains 申, 子, and 辰, so the Water frame is complete. In 甲子, 庚午, 甲戌, 丙寅, the branches 寅, 午, and 戌 are all present, so the Fire frame is complete. No extra pairs or school rules are needed.

After identifying a frame, distinguish an associated element direction from an established transformation. The direction is a traditional label attached to the frame. It is not proof that the chart transformed, and it does not overwrite the original hidden stems or engine totals. The visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals. Hidden-stem weights of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 follow this calculator’s list-order convention, and raw totals are not a strength verdict.

Finally, record your result in a repeatable format:

  • Frame: which of the four combinations you checked.
  • Members found: the exact branches present.
  • Status: complete or partial.
  • Positions: year, month, day, or hour for each member.
  • Direction: the associated element label only.
  • Transformation: not established unless a separate, explicit rule is applied.

This procedure keeps observation separate from interpretation. You can now identify any of the four frames, state whether membership is complete or partial, and avoid treating a label as a changed chart.

四 When the reading changes

Complete versus incomplete membership

A Three Combination frame is defined by three specific Earthly Branch members. The four traditional sets are 申–子–辰 for Water, 亥–卯–未 for Wood, 寅–午–戌 for Fire, and 巳–酉–丑 for Metal. A complete frame means all three members appear somewhere in the four pillars. An incomplete or partial frame means only two of the three appear. To check this, list every branch in the chart, then compare that list against each set. If you find 申 and 子 but no 辰, you have a partial Water frame, not a complete one. The limited significance is this: a detected pair or frame means only that the listed characters coexist. It does not prove that any element transformed, and it does not overwrite the original hidden stems or the engine totals. The associated element direction is a traditional label, not evidence of change. This point connects directly with Earthly Branch Seasonal Combinations: The Four Directional Frames Explained.

Repeated members

A branch can appear more than once across the pillars. For example, a chart might contain two 子 branches alongside 申 and 辰. The set 申–子–辰 is still complete because all three required members are present, but the repetition adds weight to the 子 position in the raw count. To check this, count how many times each branch occurs, then note which members of a frame are duplicated. The limited significance is that repetition changes the visible distribution of branches, but it does not create a second frame or a stronger transformation. The calculator still records the same three-member set once. Raw totals remain a description of what is present, not a verdict on strength.

Coexistence with another listed relation

A chart may contain a complete Three Combination frame and also contain branches that form a different listed relation, such as a clash or another combination. For instance, 寅–午–戌 may be complete while a separate pair like 子–午 also appears. To check this, identify every frame and every other relation separately, then mark which branches serve more than one role. The limited significance is that coexistence means both patterns are present in the branch list. It does not mean one relation cancels the other, and it does not mean the chart transformed in two directions at once. Each detected relation stands as a record of coexisting characters.

Unknown-hour or boundary uncertainty

If the hour of birth is unknown, no Hour Pillar is invented, so the branch list contains only three pillars. A frame that requires a branch found only in the missing hour cannot be confirmed as complete. To check this, compare the known branches against each set and note whether the missing member could have appeared in the hour. The limited significance is that an unknown hour leaves membership unresolved, not proven absent. Boundary uncertainty also matters: Year and Month use China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time. A birth near a day or hour boundary may shift a branch, so verify the time basis before treating a frame as complete.

Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 0.8; Hurting Officer 0.5; Indirect Wealth 1.3; Direct Wealth 1.0; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 1.0; Indirect Resource 1.5; Direct Resource 1.3.

Chart A: A Complete Water Frame

Chart A has the pillars 甲子, 辛未, 甲辰 and 壬申. Its listed match is a Three Combination: 申–子–辰 → Water. This is a complete three-member frame because all three branches are present among the visible branches.

Trace the members by position. The year branch is 子. The day branch is 辰. The hour branch is 申. Together, 申, 子 and 辰 form the full set. No listed member is missing, so this is not a two-branch partial frame.

The direction label “Water” is traditional. It does not prove that the chart transformed, and it does not erase the original hidden stems or the engine totals. The branches still carry their own hidden stems: 子 hides 癸; 辰 hides 戊, 乙 and 癸; 申 hides 庚, 壬 and 戊.

The supplied five-element totals are wood 2.8, fire 0.5, earth 2.3, metal 2 and water 2.8. These are raw totals, not a strength verdict. The visible Day Master 甲 counts in the five-element totals. It is excluded only from the article’s weighted Ten-God totals.

Those weighted Ten-God totals are Friend 1, Rob Wealth 0.8, Eating God 0, Hurting Officer 0.5, Indirect Wealth 1.3, Direct Wealth 1, Seven Killings 1, Direct Officer 1, Indirect Resource 1.5 and Direct Resource 1.3. The hidden-stem weights 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 follow this calculator’s list-order convention.

So the match means only that 申, 子 and 辰 coexist in Chart A. It is a complete Water-direction frame by traditional label, while the original hidden stems and totals remain in place.

丙 Eating God (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)

Relevant listed interaction(s) — Three Combination: 寅–午–戌 → Fire.

Element totals — Wood 3.0; Fire 2.8; Earth 1.8; Metal 1.5; Water 1.0.

Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 2.0; Eating God 1.5; Hurting Officer 1.3; Indirect Wealth 1.3; Direct Wealth 0.5; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.5; Direct Resource 1.0.

Chart B: A Complete Fire Frame

Chart B has the pillars 甲子, 庚午, 甲戌 and 丙寅. Its branches are 子, 午, 戌 and 寅. The lookup lists four Three Combination frames: 申–子–辰 → Water, 亥–卯–未 → Wood, 寅–午–戌 → Fire, and 巳–酉–丑 → Metal. Chart B contains 寅, 午 and 戌, so it matches the complete Fire frame. A complete frame means all three listed characters coexist; the Fire direction is a traditional label, not proof that the chart transformed.

The engine still reads each branch’s hidden stems. Year 子 hides 癸 (Direct Resource). Month 午 hides 丁 (Hurting Officer) and 己 (Direct Wealth). Day 戌 hides 戊 (Indirect Wealth), 辛 (Direct Officer) and 丁 (Hurting Officer). Hour 寅 hides 甲 (Friend), 丙 (Eating God) and 戊 (Indirect Wealth). These hidden stems remain part of the totals.

Chart B’s five-element totals are Wood 3, Fire 2.8, Earth 1.8, Metal 1.5 and Water 1. The visible Day Master 甲 counts in these totals. Weighted Ten-God totals are Friend 2, Eating God 1.5, Hurting Officer 1.3, Indirect Wealth 1.3, Seven Killings 1, Direct Resource 1, Direct Wealth 0.5 and Direct Officer 0.5. Rob Wealth and Indirect Resource are 0. The Day Master is excluded only from these weighted Ten-God totals.

Contrast with Chart A

Chart A has branches 子, 未, 辰 and 申. It matches 申–子–辰 → Water, a complete Water frame. Chart B matches 寅–午–戌 → Fire. Both are complete three-member frames, but they point to different traditional element directions. Chart A’s totals are Wood 2.8, Fire 0.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 2 and Water 2.8; Chart B’s are Wood 3, Fire 2.8, Earth 1.8, Metal 1.5 and Water 1. Raw totals are not a strength verdict.

A repeatable observation: identify every listed frame, then read the hidden stems and exact totals before drawing any conclusion.

六 Base-rate boundary

The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This article covers a family containing several different pairs or frames, so one combined percentage would hide which exact condition was counted.

When a later analysis gives a frequency, read it as an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or birth records. Define one precise pair or complete frame first, then count that condition without treating its presence as an event forecast.
