Extinction (Jue) in Bazi: A Cycle Boundary, Not Zero Support

Ink wash painting of a small patch of almost empty earth with only a faint weathered remnant of an old herb stem dissolving into soft ink; the previous growth has receded, spacious pause, no seedling.

一 What it is

What Extinction (Jue) Means

Extinction (绝, Jue) is the tenth phase in the twelve-stage growth cycle, the boundary point after Grave (墓, Mu) and before Conception (胎, Tai), where a reference stem's symbolic cycle reaches its thinnest thread before a new one begins. Think of a phone at one percent battery: the screen still shows your map, messages, and contacts, but the charge itself is nearly spent. Nothing has been deleted; the reserve is simply at its lowest ebb.

The imagery is interruption and exhaustion within a cycle, not a verdict on a chart. Jia at Shen is the classic lookup: Jia reaches Extinction in Shen. Shen hides Geng (Seven Killings), Ren (Indirect Resource), and Wu (Indirect Wealth). No Wood is hidden there, yet Ren remains as resource, so Extinction does not mean zero qi across the chart.

Phase labels depend on the reference. In chart A, month Geng at Shen sits in Adulthood (临官, Lin Guan); in chart B, hour Ren at Shen sits in Birth (长生, Chang Sheng). The same Shen branch carries different labels because the reference stem differs. Changing the reference does not change Shen's hidden stems; changing the column does not change the phase of an identical stem-branch pair.

Keep presence, root, resource, phase, and whole-chart strength distinct. A same-element root is not a same-stem root. Phase labels are traditional symbolic vocabulary, not health or life predictions; they describe a lookup position, not an outcome.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where Extinction Appears

Extinction (Jue, 绝) is the tenth phase, following Grave (Mu, 墓) and preceding Conception (Tai, 胎). It marks a cycle boundary: symbolic interruption or exhaustion, not a doomed chart, bankruptcy, abandonment, or zero qi everywhere. Yang stems run forward, yin stems reverse, and Earth follows Fire in this convention. Jia reaches Extinction at Shen. Shen hides Geng (Seven Killings), Ren (Indirect Resource), and Wu (Indirect Wealth); no Wood is hidden, yet resource Ren remains present. In chart A, month Geng at Shen is Adulthood for its own pillar stem, while Jia sees Extinction there. In chart B, hour Ren at Shen is Birth for its own stem, while Jia again sees Extinction. One branch therefore carries different phase labels by reference stem.

How to Read It in the UI

  • Your Four Pillars shows the Day stem above the Day branch, with hidden stems as small characters.
  • Element balance gives weighted totals; Day Master strength is a separate scored estimate.
  • There is no dedicated Twelve Growth Phases row, so copy a reference stem and target branch into the article table.
  • That ten-row table lists only the branch matching this phase for each stem; it is not a complete matrix or calculator.
  • Worked-chart tables below show Jia-phase and own-pillar-stem phase rows; an unknown hour leaves the hour reading unconfirmed.

Input Checklist

  • Confirm the Day stem, then calculate your chart.
  • Record each branch and its hidden stems.
  • Keep presence, root, resource, phase, and whole-chart strength distinct; same-element root is not same-stem root.
  • Weights 1, 0.5, and 0.3 are calculator convention.
  • Treat phase names as symbolic vocabulary, not health or life predictions.
Copy from the grid: Day column → top character = reference Day Master. Chosen column → lower character = target branch. Keep the column name in your notes; then use the lookup below.

三 How to read it

Reading Extinction as a Phase, Not a Verdict

Extinction (绝, Jue) is the tenth phase, sitting after Grave (墓, Mu) and before Conception (胎, Tai). In this symbolic cycle it marks an interruption or exhaustion of a stem's momentum at a particular branch — not bankruptcy, abandonment, or zero qi across the whole chart. The lookup is a simple reference-stem/branch pair. Yang stems run forward, yin stems reverse, and Earth follows Fire in this convention. So Jia meets Extinction at Shen, Yi at You, Bing and Wu at Hai, Ding and Ji at Zi, Geng at Yin, Xin at Mao, Ren at Si, and Gui at Wu. The target-phase-only table below lists these matches; for pairs outside it, the complete Twelve Growth Phases matrix in the linked overview gives every stem-branch combination.

Three Reference-Stem Comparisons

Take the same Shen branch and change only the reference stem. For Jia, Shen is Extinction. For Geng, Shen is Adulthood (临官, Lin Guan). For Ren, Shen is Birth (长生, Chang Sheng). The branch's hidden stems never change: Shen hides Geng (Seven Killings to Jia), Ren (Indirect Resource), and Wu (Indirect Wealth), weighted 1, 0.5, and 0.3 by calculator convention. What changes is the phase label, because phase is a reference-stem/branch lookup, not a property of the branch itself. Changing the column does not change the phase of an identical stem-branch pair; changing the reference stem does not change the hidden stems.

Hidden Stems and the Resource Thread

In chart A (戊辰, 庚申, 甲辰, 己巳), Jia's month pillar is Geng at Shen: Day Master phase Extinction, while the pillar stem Geng at Shen reads Adulthood. Shen holds no Wood, so Jia finds no same-element root there — but Ren, Indirect Resource, remains hidden at weight 0.5. Extinction therefore does not mean the branch is empty of support for Jia; it means the Wood phase is interrupted while the resource channel persists. Presence, root, resource, phase, and whole-chart strength are separate questions. In chart B (丁卯, 癸丑, 甲子, 壬申), Jia's hour pillar is Ren at Shen: Day Master phase Extinction again, but the pillar stem Ren at Shen reads Birth. Same branch, same Day Master phase, different pillar-stem phase.

Common Confusions

  • Treating Jue as a global absence claim rather than one stem-branch phase label.
  • Treating Jue as a branch or stem rather than a growth-phase label.
  • Assuming a same-element root equals a same-stem root; they are distinct.
  • Reading Extinction as a health or life prediction rather than traditional symbolic vocabulary.

Use the phase as one calculation layer: identify the reference stem, find the branch, read the label, then weigh hidden stems and the rest of the chart separately.

甲 申 forward
乙 酉 reverse
丙 亥 forward
丁 子 reverse
戊 亥 forward
己 子 reverse
庚 寅 forward
辛 卯 reverse

四 When the reading changes

Month Shen Versus Hour Shen: Same Branch, Different Reference

In chart A, Jia day master meets Shen in the month pillar, so the day-master phase row reads Extinction (Jue). In chart B, the same Jia day master meets Shen in the hour pillar, and the day-master phase row again reads Extinction. The branch is identical; the reference stem is identical; the label does not change with column position. What changes is only which pillar carries that lookup. A repeatable check: locate the branch, locate the reference stem, consult the matrix, and record the phase. Do not convert month or hour into life periods or events. The phase is symbolic vocabulary for a cycle boundary, not a prediction about a stage of life.

Changing The Reference Stem Changes The Phase, Not The Hidden Stems

Chart A month is Geng on Shen. For the Jia day master, Shen is Extinction. For the pillar stem Geng itself, Shen is Adulthood (Lin Guan). Chart B hour is Ren on Shen: Jia sees Extinction, while Ren sees Birth (Chang Sheng). This is the practical meaning of choosing the reference stem: the same branch produces different phase labels for different stems. Shen still hides Geng Seven Killings, Ren Indirect Resource, and Wu Indirect Wealth in both charts. Changing the reference does not alter hidden stems, Ten Gods relationships to Jia, or the branch itself. Only the phase row changes.

Hidden Root And Resource Are Separate From The Phase Label

Shen hides no Wood, so Jia has no same-element root there. That absence of Wood root is a hidden-stem fact, not a whole-chart strength verdict. Shen does hide Ren Indirect Resource, which remains present as resource qi even while Jia's phase is Extinction. Presence, root, resource, phase, and whole-chart strength are distinct checks. In chart A, Wood totals 2 and Water 1.1 by calculator convention weights 1, 0.5, 0.3; in chart B, Wood is 2 and Water 4. Those element totals describe the screened charts, not a score for any person. Extinction does not mean zero qi across the chart.

Unknown Hour And The Boundary Between Grave And Conception

If the hour is unknown, the Shen hour lookup in chart B cannot be assigned, but the month and day phases remain readable. Extinction sits tenth, after Grave (Mu) and before Conception (Tai), so it marks a cycle boundary rather than a permanent condition. Yang stems run forward and yin stems reverse; Earth follows Fire in this convention. A useful bounded interpretation: record Extinction where the matrix places it, then separately note hidden stems, roots, resource, and element totals. The label describes a symbolic position in a twelve-stage sequence, not bankruptcy, abandonment, medical status, or a fixed life outcome.

Teaching Chart A: Extinction at the Month Position

Chart A has the pillars 戊辰, 庚申, 甲辰, 己巳 with Jia as Day Master. The target phase is Extinction (Jue), the tenth stage after Grave and before Conception. In the month column, Jia meets Shen, so the Day Master phase is Extinction. This is a cycle boundary: the Jia–Shen pair marks interruption or exhaustion in the symbolic twelve-stage sequence, not a chart with zero support.

The month stem Geng is not read with Jia's phase. Geng at Shen is Adulthood, because phase labels depend on the reference stem. Changing the reference stem changes the phase label, but it does not change Shen's hidden stems. Shen hides Geng (Seven Killings, weight 1), Ren (Indirect Resource, weight 0.5), and Wu (Indirect Wealth, weight 0.3). No Wood is hidden in Shen, yet Ren remains an Indirect Resource for Jia. Presence, root, resource, phase, and whole-chart strength are separate calculations.

One contrasting position is the hour: Ji at Si. Jia's phase there is Sickness, while Ji's own phase at Si is Emperor. The same branch can therefore carry different phase labels depending on the reference stem. Extinction describes only the Jia–Shen lookup; it does not erase the hidden Ren resource or declare the whole chart empty.

Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 1, Earth 1.3, Metal 1.3, Water 4.

Teaching Chart B: Hour Shen, Jia Day Master

Chart B is 丁卯 / 癸丑 / 甲子 / 壬申, with Jia as Day Master. The hour branch Shen gives Jia Extinction (Jue), the tenth phase after Grave and before Conception. This is a cycle boundary, not zero support. Shen hides Geng Seven Killings (weight 1), Ren Indirect Resource (0.5) and Wu Indirect Wealth (0.3). No Wood hides there, yet Ren remains a resource stem, so the branch is not empty of support.

Compare the hour target phase with Chart A's month. In A, Jia meets Shen in the month pillar, also Extinction. Same reference stem and branch, same label; moving the column does not change the pair's phase. But the pillar stems differ: A's month stem Geng at Shen is Adulthood, while B's hour stem Ren at Shen is Birth. These are separate reference-stem lookups, not one controlled experiment.

Root and resource also sit elsewhere. B's year Mao holds Yi Rob Wealth, a same-element root, while month Chou and day Zi carry Gui Direct Resource. Presence, root, resource, phase and whole-chart strength are distinct questions; a Jue label is symbolic vocabulary, not a health or life prediction. See the 申 branch and its hidden stems for the branch's full contents.

Reader check: name the reference stem, find its branch, read the phase, then list hidden stems and any resource or root elsewhere before judging strength.

六 What the lookup counts

In this table, each of the ten reference stems assigns Extinction to exactly one of the twelve branches: ten cells out of the 120 stem–branch lookup cells. This is a property of the lookup grid, not the percentage of people, births or complete charts containing the phase. The convention is Yang forward, Yin reverse and Earth following Fire. Record the reference stem and pillar position before interpreting a match.

Calculate your chart and check your own reference stem and target branch against the table.
