Geng Shen Day Pillar: A Same-Stem Metal Root with Output

一 What it is

What Geng Shen Means

A Geng Shen day pillar is a 庚 Day Master sitting on a 申 branch whose main hidden stem is also 庚, so the day stem finds a same-stem Metal root directly beneath itself. Think of a carpenter whose own toolbox sits under the workbench: the tool is not borrowed from a neighbor, it is stored in the same place the work happens. That hidden 庚 is a Friend by Ten God label, but the label is not what makes it a root; the fact that it is hidden Metal is. The same branch also hides 壬 Eating God at 0.5 and 戊 Indirect Resource at 0.3, so the pillar carries output and resource alongside the root. What distinguishes this pillar is that the root and the Day Master share one stem identity, while the output is 壬, an Eating God, not a Wealth stem. 戊 is Earth, which is Resource, not a Metal root. The day position reads 临官, Adulthood, for both the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase, since those are identical references at the day slot. Adulthood is a phase label, not maturity, guaranteed strength, health, or a personality verdict, and a phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Read This in Your Chart

Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem; the bottom character is the day branch. In this article the stem is 庚 and the branch is 申, so the day pillar is 庚申. Small characters beside the branch are hidden stems; they are not extra pillars and they do not carry Ten God labels in the main grid.

To check the phase, use the article tables or the full overview, because the main grid has no dedicated growth-phase row. Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase and not a strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and time rather than applying an invented universal rollover rule.

When comparing two charts, identify which pillars actually change. In the examples below, A and B share the same day pillar 庚申 and the same hour pillar 辛巳; their year and month pillars differ, so only those positions change the surrounding context.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

How to Read the Geng Shen Day Pillar

Begin by separating the layers instead of merging them into one verdict. The cycle index is 57, which only tells you where Geng Shen sits in the sixty-pillar sequence. The stem element and polarity are yang Metal: Geng is the Day Master. The hidden Ten Gods are read from the day branch Shen, not from the visible stem. The phase is a separate reference label, and the complete chart is all four pillars together. A repeatable method keeps these layers apart, because a cycle number, an element, a hidden stem, and a phase answer different questions.

Next, read the day branch's hidden stems exactly. Shen hides Geng Friend at weight 1, Ren Eating God at weight .5, and Wu Indirect Resource at weight .3. The main hidden stem is Geng, a same-stem Metal root. Ren is output, not Wealth. Wu is Earth Resource, not a Metal root. For Geng and Xin alike, a root requires hidden Metal; Earth is Resource and cannot substitute. Do not confuse Shen's main element with every hidden stem inside it, and do not treat a visible peer stem as a hidden root. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are teaching weights, not seasonal strength scores.

Then read the phase without inflating it. Geng moves forward through the phase matrix, while Xin moves in reverse. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase are identical references, so both show Adulthood here. Adulthood is not maturity, biological age, or guaranteed strength, and a phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. Phase labels are not health, lifespan, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationship predictions. Keep the phase reference separate from the placement evidence.

Finally, compare complete charts by changing only what actually changes. In chart A, the year is Ren Shen and the month is Ren Zi; in chart B, the year is Ren Wu and the month is Bing Wu. The day and hour pillars stay the same, so the meaningful contrast sits in the year and month positions. Chart A repeats Shen's hidden Geng, Ren, and Wu, while its Zi month hides only Gui Hurting Officer. Chart B replaces those branches with Wu, hiding Ding Direct Officer and Ji Direct Resource. The day pillar's own root does not change. For branch background, see Shen Monkey Earthly Branch.

To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.

Hidden stem Ten God relative to Geng Calculator weight
庚 Friend 1
壬 Eating God 0.5
戊 Indirect Resource 0.3

庚申 57 临官 Adulthood

四 When the reading changes

Winter Output Beside a Same-Stem Metal Root

In chart A, the month branch is 子, so the surrounding season is winter water. The day pillar 庚申 still supplies a hidden 庚 root at weight 1, and the year branch 申 repeats that same hidden 庚 root. The two visible 壬 stems are Eating God output, and the month branch 子 hides only 癸 Hurting Officer. This is a chart where output is abundant and the Metal root is real but not the only force in view. The hidden 戊 Indirect Resource at weight 0.3 is Earth Resource, not a Metal root. A phase label such as Adulthood at the day position is a reference point, not a statement about maturity or guaranteed strength. The day branch 申 hides 庚, 壬, and 戊; it does not hide a Wealth star. That absence is a reading limit, not a prediction of financial or romantic failure.

Fire Officer Pressure Around the Same Day Pillar

In chart B, the month branch changes to 午, and the year branch also becomes 午. Those two 午 branches hide 丁 Direct Officer and 己 Direct Resource, while the visible month stem 丙 is Seven Killings. The day pillar 庚申 is unchanged, so the same-stem Metal root remains. The contrast is not that one chart has a root and the other does not; both have hidden 庚 in 申. The difference is what surrounds that root: winter output water in A, fire officer and resource pressure in B. The hidden 己 Direct Resource in 午 is Earth Resource, not a Metal root. For 庚 and 辛, a root requires hidden Metal. Visible peers such as the hour stem 辛 Rob Wealth are not themselves hidden roots. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores; they simply show which hidden stems are present.

Relationship Reading Limits Tied to Changed Pillars

When comparing A and B, the day pillar 庚申 is identical, so any relationship reading tied only to the day pillar would not change between them. The actual changes are in the year and month pillars. A has 壬申 and 壬子; B has 壬午 and 丙午. In A, the year branch 申 adds hidden 庚 Friend and hidden 壬 Eating God, while the month branch 子 hides 癸 Hurting Officer. In B, both 午 branches hide 丁 Direct Officer and 己 Direct Resource, and the month stem 丙 is Seven Killings. These are placement facts, not forecasts. A relationship reading cannot be derived from the day pillar alone, and the presence of output or officer stars does not determine a partner's behavior or a relationship outcome. For a general reference on phase labels, see how to use the 12 growth phases.

Career and Reflection Limits in Output and Officer Placements

In chart A, the visible 壬 Eating God stems and the hidden 癸 Hurting Officer in 子 point to output placements. The hidden 庚 roots in 申 and 巳 support the day master, but the chart does not say what career a person should choose. In chart B, the visible 丙 Seven Killings and the hidden 丁 Direct Officer in both 午 branches point to officer placements, while the hidden 己 Direct Resource in 午 is Earth Resource. The day pillar 庚申 still provides the same hidden 庚 root, hidden 壬 output, and hidden 戊 resource. A career reading can note that output and officer placements differ between A and B, but it cannot convert those placements into a job title, income level, or promotion timeline. Reflection limits apply equally: the day master phase at the day position is Adulthood in both charts, but that label is not a measure of maturity, health, or life stage. The hour pillar 辛巳 is identical in both examples, so any reading that depends only on the hour pillar would not distinguish A from B.

Chart A places 庚 (Geng) as the Day Master in the day column, sitting on 申 (Shen). The day pillar is therefore 庚申. In the Four Pillars grid, the day stem 庚 appears on top and the branch 申 below it, with small hidden-stem characters shown under 申: 庚, 壬, and 戊. These are the actual hidden stems of the day branch, not extra pillars.

Read them in order. Hidden 庚 is Friend, weight 1, a same-stem Metal root. Hidden 壬 is Eating God, weight 0.5, Output. Hidden 戊 is Indirect Resource, weight 0.3, Earth. Only the hidden 庚 is a Metal root for the Day Master. The 戊 is Resource, and Resource is not a root. The 壬 is Output, and Output is not Wealth. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth.

The day stem 庚 over 申 gives 临官, Adulthood. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase are the same reference. Adulthood is a phase label, not maturity, health, lifespan, or guaranteed strength. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can.

One useful contrast inside chart A is position. The year pillar is 壬申, so its branch 申 repeats the same hidden 庚, 壬, and 戊 found in the day branch. The month branch 子 hides only 癸, Hurting Officer. The hour branch 巳 hides 丙, 庚, and 戊, so it also carries hidden Geng. Visible stems such as 辛 in the hour are peers, but a visible peer is not itself a hidden root. The label 庚申 describes the day position's same-stem Metal root plus Output and Resource; it does not by itself predict personality, finances, health, or relationships.

Chart B is 壬午 / 丙午 / 庚申 / 辛巳, with Geng as the Day Master. The day pillar 庚申 carries a same-stem Metal root: Shen's main hidden stem is Geng (Friend, weight 1), with Ren (Eating God, .5) and Wu (Indirect Resource, .3) as secondary hidden stems. That hidden Geng is the root; Wu Earth is Resource that supports Geng but is not itself a Metal root. The visible hour stem Xin is a peer, yet a visible peer is not a hidden root. Shen's main qi is Geng, so the branch's main element should not be confused with every hidden stem inside it. The Day position shows Geng at Adulthood, and the pillar-stem phase matches because both use the same day reference. A phase label is a positional marker, not a claim about health, lifespan, or character.

Chart A is 壬申 / 壬子 / 庚申 / 辛巳. Both charts share the identical day pillar 庚申 and hour pillar 辛巳. What changes is the year and month: Chart A has 壬申 and 壬子, while Chart B has 壬午 and 丙午. So the year branch shifts from Shen to Wu, and the month pillar shifts from 壬子 to 丙午. The day and hour pillars do not change between A and B.

In Chart B, month stem Bing is Seven Killings for Geng, and both Wu branches hide Ding (Direct Officer, 1) and Ji (Direct Resource, .5). The year stem Ren remains Eating God, but its branch is now Wu rather than Shen. The unchanged hour pillar 辛巳 keeps Xin Rob Wealth above Si, hiding Bing, Geng, and Wu.

Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth. A hidden Geng or Xin is a Metal root regardless of its Friend or Rob Wealth label. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores. For a related comparison, see the Wu Shen Day Pillar.

Reader check: In the Four Pillars grid, find the Day column (top stem 庚, bottom branch 申, small hidden-stem characters beneath). Confirm the first hidden stem is 庚, then check whether the year and month branches read 申/子 (Chart A) or 午/午 (Chart B). That comparison shows which surrounding pillars actually changed.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.

Calculate your chart and compare the Day column, hidden stems and the other pillars.
