一 What it is
Wu Shen is the 45th pillar of the sexagenary cycle: Yang Earth (戊) sitting on Yang Metal (申). Think of a builder standing on a metal workshop floor — the ground beneath is still earth, but the tools and output around him are metal, and the water pipe running through the wall is wealth. The day stem is Wu Earth, so every Ten God here is read from Wu: hidden Geng is Eating God, hidden Ren is Indirect Wealth, and hidden Wu is a Friend.
What distinguishes Wu Shen is that the branch is not a simple resource store. Shen hides no Fire at all, so the branch offers no Direct or Indirect Resource stem to feed the day stem. Instead it hides Geng Eating God at full weight, Ren Indirect Wealth at half weight, and Wu Friend at a smaller weight. The Earth root is real because hidden Wu shares the same element as the actual Day Master, even though the branch itself is Metal. That root is not the same as a visible peer stem; it is a hidden Earth stem inside a Metal branch.
The phase lookup for this pillar is 病, Sickness. Wu Earth and the Wu day stem share the same lookup at the day position, so the Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase are identical here — one reference, not two separate energies. Sickness is a phase label, not a medical statement or a strength score. The Earth root and the Output/Wealth hidden stems are separate observations: the root does not depend on the phase, and the phase does not create the root.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Wu Shen in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem; the bottom character is the day branch. For this pillar, that is 戊 over 申. The small characters inside the branch cell are the hidden stems: 庚 Eating God, 壬 Indirect Wealth, and 戊 Friend. Those hidden stems are not visible stems in the main grid; the article labels their Ten Gods.
Your Day Master is the stem only. The day pillar is both characters together. If you want to calculate your chart, enter an accurate birthplace and time, especially near a day boundary. An unknown hour leaves the hour pillar unconfirmed; do not assume a universal rollover rule.
There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main UI. Phase lookup uses the article tables or the full overview. For 戊 at 申, the reference is Sickness, a stem-branch lookup rather than a score, health label, or prediction. Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase or strength verdict; Day Master strength is a separate estimate.
Check whether hidden Earth appears in the day branch even when Metal dominates. That hidden 戊 is the Earth root. A Fire main qi elsewhere does not remove it, and phase cannot create a root.
三 How to read it
Layer the cycle index before reading Wu Shen
Begin with the cycle index: Wu Shen is pair 45 in the sixty-pillar sequence. The index identifies a cycle position, not a person or outcome. Separate stem and branch before assigning Ten Gods. The stem is 戊 Wu, yang Earth, and it is the actual Day Master for both teaching charts in this article. The branch is 申 Shen, yang Metal. Do not confuse 戊 Wu Earth with 午 Wu Horse; they share a sound in English but are different characters and different layers.
Read hidden stems and Ten Gods relative to Wu
Next, open the branch. Shen hides Geng, Ren, and Wu. Relative to a Wu Earth Day Master, Geng is Eating God, Ren is Indirect Wealth, and Wu is Friend. These labels are calculated from the actual day stem, not borrowed from another article. The weights below are fixed calculator conventions, not season-adjusted strength units. They distinguish main, middle and residual qi rather than outcomes.
Notice what is absent: Shen hides no Fire. A reader checking the Shen Monkey Earthly Branch page can confirm the hidden set before applying Ten Gods. Geng is Output, not Resource, because Metal drains Earth rather than feeding it. Ren is Wealth, not a root, because Water is not the same element as the Day Master. The hidden Wu is the Earth root: it shares the Day Master's element even though the branch is Metal. Root requires hidden Earth, and a Metal main qi does not remove that hidden Earth root.
Apply the phase lookup without turning it into a score
Then look up the phase. For Wu Earth, the phase convention runs forward like Bing; Ji Earth would run reverse like Ding. Earth following Fire is a declared convention here, not a universal school rule. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase are the same lookup, not two different energies. Wu at Shen is Sickness, written 病. That label is a stem-branch reference, not a medical state, biological age, or prediction. Phase cannot create a root and cannot forecast development timing. It simply records where the stem sits in the conventional cycle.

Finish with the complete chart, not the pillar alone
Finally, place Wu Shen inside the full four-pillar chart. The day pillar is one column; month, year, and hour can change which elements and Ten Gods are present. Check each branch for hidden Earth if you are assessing root. In the two teaching charts, Wu Shen sits with different surrounding pillars, so the same day pillar appears in different elemental totals. Use that sequence consistently rather than interpreting the day pillar in isolation.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Wu | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 庚 | Eating God | 1 |
| 壬 | Indirect Wealth | 0.5 |
| 戊 | Friend | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Wu phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 戊申 | 45 | 病 Sickness |
四 When the reading changes
Wu Shen in a Metal-Heavy Chart
When Metal Output appears in both the year and month stems, the Geng Eating God hidden in Shen is reinforced by visible output stems, and the Earth root hidden in Shen becomes the quiet counterweight. In Example A, where Xin Hurting Officer sits on both year and month stems, the output channel is loud while the Earth root does structural rather than expressive work. The reader should check whether hidden Wu in Shen is the only Earth present or whether other branches also hide Earth. If Shen is the sole Earth location, the root is real but thin, and stability depends on how the remaining pillars behave. Season matters: a Metal-dominant autumn chart gives Geng more room, while spring or summer changes the surrounding pressure without removing the hidden Wu. The phase lookup for Wu at Shen is Sickness, a stem-branch reference rather than a health reading. Use how to use the 12 growth phases to see how Wu and Ji are mapped forward and reverse respectively.
Wu Shen with Fire Resources Present
Example B shows Wu Shen flanked by strong Fire: Ren Wu year, Bing Wu month, Ding Si hour. The Fire resources are visible and heavy, yet they do not erase the hidden Wu inside Shen. A common misreading treats the Fire main qi in Si or Wu as replacing the Earth root, or assumes that because Fire is present the day master no longer needs the Shen root. That is incorrect. Root requires hidden Earth, and Shen hides Wu regardless of what other branches contain. What Fire changes is context: the chart has visible resource support, so Shen's output and wealth operate in a different environment than in a Metal-heavy chart. The reader should separate the question of root from the question of resource support; they answer different questions. The phase at the day position for Wu is Sickness in both examples because the lookup is identical, not a different energy in each chart.
Reading Relationships from Wu Shen
Relationship reading from a day pillar alone is limited. Shen hides Geng Eating God, Ren Indirect Wealth, and Wu Friend. The day branch itself is conventionally called the spouse palace, and some traditions use Wealth symbolism in partner readings; neither fact establishes an outcome. A reader should not force a relationship interpretation from Shen's hidden stems. What can be observed is that Output, Wealth and an Earth root coexist in the branch; this does not establish personality or relationship style. The Earth root is a hidden placement, not evidence of emotional self-sufficiency or a relationship outcome. Relationship readings require the full chart, not just the day pillar.
Career and Reflection Limits
Career indications from Wu Shen are similarly bounded. Geng Eating God as the dominant hidden stem points toward output-oriented activity, but the calculator does not assign profession suitability. The reader can observe that output is structurally present and that indirect wealth is also hidden, suggesting a pattern where expression and resource accumulation are linked. This is a structural observation, not a career recommendation. Reflection should focus on what is actually visible: the hidden stems, their Ten God relationships to Wu, and the phase lookup. The phase cannot create a root or predict timing. It is a reference point, not a developmental forecast. The reader should treat the day pillar as one component among four, not as a standalone verdict on career or life direction.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Wu Earth Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 辛 | 戊 | 丁 |
| Branch | 未 | 丑 | 申 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Hurting Officer | Day Master | Direct Resource |
| Hidden stems | 己 Rob Wealth (1) 丁 Direct Resource (0.5) 乙 Direct Officer (0.3) |
己 Rob Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Wealth (0.5) 辛 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
庚 Eating God (1) 壬 Indirect Wealth (0.5) 戊 Friend (0.3) |
丙 Indirect Resource (1) 庚 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Friend (0.3) |
| Wu Day Master phase | 衰 Decline | 养 Gestation | 病 Sickness | 临官 Adulthood |
| Own pillar stem phase | 衰 Decline | 养 Gestation | 病 Sickness | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 2.5, Earth 3.6, Metal 3.8, Water 1.
Chart A places 戊申 at the day pillar, between 辛丑 in the month and 丁巳 in the hour. The day stem 戊 is the actual Day Master, and the day branch 申 is the Day Branch. 申 hides 庚 Eating God, 壬 Indirect Wealth, and 戊 Friend. These are hidden stems, read from the branch’s internal composition, not from the visible stem row. The 戊 inside 申 is an Earth root because it hides the same element as the Day Master. That root remains even though 申 is a Metal branch and contains no hidden Fire. The phase lookup for 戊 at 申 is 病, rendered as Sickness. At the day position, the Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase use the same lookup, so they are identical there, not two separate energies. Sickness is a phase label, not a medical statement or prediction.
Two contrasts help. First, the day branch 申 hides 庚 Eating God, while the hour branch 巳 also hides 庚 Eating God; the same hidden stem can repeat across branches, so check each column separately. Second, the day branch 申 hides 壬 Indirect Wealth, while the month branch 丑 hides 癸 Direct Wealth. These are positional differences, not a verdict on which Wealth is better. The label “Wu Shen” cannot decide strength, usability, or timing. It cannot create a root, remove the hidden 戊, or predict development. A reader should confirm the day stem 戊, the day branch 申, the hidden stems 庚, 壬, and 戊, and the Ten Gods relative to 戊. Do not confuse 戊 Earth with 午 Horse, and do not call 庚 a Resource merely because it sits in a Metal branch.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 戊 | 丁 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 申 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Indirect Wealth | Indirect Resource | Day Master | Direct Resource |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Direct Resource (1) 己 Rob Wealth (0.5) |
丁 Direct Resource (1) 己 Rob Wealth (0.5) |
庚 Eating God (1) 壬 Indirect Wealth (0.5) 戊 Friend (0.3) |
丙 Indirect Resource (1) 庚 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Friend (0.3) |
| Wu Day Master phase | 帝旺 Emperor | 帝旺 Emperor | 病 Sickness | 临官 Adulthood |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 病 Sickness | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0, Fire 5, Earth 2.6, Metal 1.5, Water 1.5.
Chart B keeps the same Wu Shen day pillar as Chart A, so the comparison turns on the surrounding columns. Chart B places Ren Indirect Wealth over Wu in the year and Bing Indirect Resource over Wu in the month, with Ding Direct Resource over Si in the hour. Chart A instead uses Xin Hurting Officer stems over Wei and Chou, keeping the same Ding-Si hour.
The changed pillars are therefore the year and month. Chart A's year and month branches hide Earth and Fire in Wei, Earth, Water and Metal in Chou, and Wood in Wei. Chart B's two Wu branches hide only Ding Direct Resource and Ji Rob Wealth, adding Fire and Earth but no Wood at all. Chart B shows more Resource and peer presence around the same Wu-Shen core, while Chart A shows more output and a wider spread of hidden elements.
Inside the day pillar itself, Geng is Eating God, an output stem, not Resource. Ren is Indirect Wealth, not a root. The only root in Shen is the hidden Wu Friend, and it stays a root because it hides the same element as the actual Day Master. Shen holds no Fire, so any Resource support must come from outside the day pillar. The phase reference for Wu at Shen is Sickness, a stem-branch lookup rather than a health or strength reading, and at the day position the Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase use the same lookup.
Readers can check the day pillar directly: list the hidden stems, confirm Geng is output and Ren is wealth, and verify whether any other branch hides Earth before treating the root as reinforced. For a related Earth day pillar, compare the Wu Yin Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
