一 What it is
The four storage branches are Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei. Each is an Earth branch, yet each also contains a small set of hidden stems with its own composition. Traditional labels call them storage or grave branches because those hidden stems are described as gathered inside rather than displayed on the surface. A useful everyday analogy is four small earthen jars of the same size and material, each holding a different natural content. The jar is the branch element; the content is the hidden stems. A crack between two jars is a clash between branches, not a promise that the contents pour out. Chen is traditionally associated with Water, Xu with Fire, Chou with Metal and Wei with Wood. Those storage associations are separate from the branch element Earth, and separate from Grave (Mu), one of the twelve Growth Phases, which is reference-dependent: a branch is only a Grave relative to a particular stem. Not every Earth branch is every stem's Grave. The calculator's fixed hidden weights of 1, 0.5 and 0.3 are bookkeeping values for its element totals, not seasonal strength scores.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Open the calculator and read the Four Pillars grid. It has Year, Month, Day and Hour columns; each column shows the stem above the branch, and the hidden stem characters appear with the branch. The Day Master is the Day stem, not an extra Ten God entry. Copy the four columns exactly as displayed, then compare them with this article’s storage-branch reference table and worked charts. The structural check uses actual branch and hidden-stem characters; there is no automatic “vault opened” result. If the hour is unknown, treat the Hour column as unconfirmed rather than filling it in. There is no universal midnight rollover rule, so do not assume one. To see the same layout on your own data, calculate your chart and read the branch positions before drawing any conclusion about clashes.
| Row | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top: stem | 甲 | 丁 | 甲 | 辛 |
| Bottom: branch | 戌 | 丑 | 辰 | 未 |
Day Master = the Day stem alone. The article’s interpretation tables are separate from the calculator interface.
三 How to read it
Start with the branch positions, not the labels. Write the four branches in order and mark which of them are Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei. That step is reproducible chart fact. Next, list the hidden stems under each storage branch and assign the Ten Gods relative to the Day Master. This is where the calculator's fixed weights matter: they let the engine total elements consistently, but they are not claims about seasonal strength. For the full method behind those numbers, see hidden stems and their weights.
Then check for clash pairs. Chen clashes with Xu; Chou clashes with Wei. Identifying a pair is a structural observation. It does not guarantee transformation, and it does not delete the hidden stems from the record. The engine's weights do not change after you notice a pair. A clash is a relationship between positions, not a switch that empties one jar into another.
Keep three distinctions separate. First, the branch element is Earth for all four. Second, the traditional storage association (Water, Fire, Metal, Wood) is a separate conventional label, not a second branch element or a ranking of hidden-stem weights. Third, the Growth Phase Grave is stem-relative: a branch is Grave only for the stem being measured. A Water Resource hidden in a branch is not a Wood root, and a visible peer stem is not a hidden root. For Chen's specific contents, see Chen and its hidden stems.
A repeatable reading method: (1) record branch positions; (2) list hidden stems and Ten Gods; (3) mark clash pairs without assuming transformation; (4) keep storage labels, branch element and Grave phase in separate columns; (5) state conclusions only about what the chart shows. Do not describe a clash as a literal vault opening, an inheritance, a cash release, a physical hazard or a guaranteed windfall. Those are unsupported real-world claims. One classical commentary explicitly rejects the blanket rule that storage branches must clash to be useful; it is one commentary, not a unanimous position.
| Branch | Pinyin | Main hidden stem | Second hidden stem | Third hidden stem | Traditional storage association |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 辰 | Chen | 戊 Wu — Indirect Wealth (1.0) | 乙 Yi — Rob Wealth (0.5) | 癸 Gui — Direct Resource (0.3) | Water |
| 戌 | Xu | 戊 Wu — Indirect Wealth (1.0) | 辛 Xin — Direct Officer (0.5) | 丁 Ding — Hurting Officer (0.3) | Fire |
| 丑 | Chou | 己 Ji — Direct Wealth (1.0) | 癸 Gui — Direct Resource (0.5) | 辛 Xin — Direct Officer (0.3) | Metal |
| 未 | Wei | 己 Ji — Direct Wealth (1.0) | 丁 Ding — Hurting Officer (0.5) | 乙 Yi — Rob Wealth (0.3) | Wood |
四 When the reading changes
Both Earth clash pairs present
Observable condition: the chart contains Chen and Xu in two positions, and Chou and Wei in two positions. Reproducible check: mark each branch position and confirm both pairs appear. Bounded conclusion: the chart contains two structural clash relationships among storage branches. That is a fact about positions. It does not establish transformation, does not remove hidden stems and does not change engine weights. For the wider clash system, see the six Earthly Branch clashes.
One storage branch repeated without its opposing branch
Observable condition: the same storage branch appears twice while its opposing branch is absent. Reproducible check: count occurrences of each storage branch and confirm the missing opponent. Bounded conclusion: repetition is a positional fact, not a separate element and not a second storage category. The repeated branch keeps its own hidden stems, and no paired Earth clash exists between the two copies. Do not infer strong or weak from totals alone.
Traditional storage label versus stem-relative Grave phase
Observable condition: a branch carries a traditional storage association such as Water for Chen, while a Growth Phase calculation names a Grave for a specific stem. Reproducible check: list the storage label separately from the Grave phase computed for each stem. Bounded conclusion: the two labels answer different questions. The storage association describes hidden content; the Grave phase is reference-dependent. Not every Earth branch is every stem's Grave, and the storage label does not make the branch a Grave for all stems.
A claimed wealth release versus unchanged hidden-stem data
Observable condition: a reading claims that clashing a storage branch releases wealth. Reproducible check: compare the hidden-stem list and weights before and after identifying the clash. Bounded conclusion: the hidden-stem data is unchanged, so the claim is interpretive rather than a chart fact. A clash may be discussed as a structural event, but it is not a literal vault opening, inheritance, cash release or guaranteed windfall. Keep the claim labeled as interpretation.

Weighted element totals: Wood 2.8, Fire 1.8, Earth 4, Metal 1.8, Water 0.8.
Chart A is a fixed Jia Yang Wood Day Master teaching chart with pillars Jia Xu, Ding Chou, Jia Chen and Xin Wei. The Year branch is Xu, the Month branch is Chou, the Day branch is Chen and the Hour branch is Wei. All four storage branches appear, and both Earth clash pairs are present: Chen with Xu, and Chou with Wei. The calculator totals Earth at 4.0, with other elements remaining in the chart. There is no visible Earth stem in Chart A, so the Earth total comes entirely from main hidden stems. Two decisive checks follow from this topic. First, confirm the branch positions: the Month branch is Chou, not Xu or Chen, so do not describe all hidden contents as Water or as Wealth. Second, confirm that identifying both clash pairs does not alter the hidden-stem record or the engine weights. The chart shows structural relationships among storage branches; it does not show a literal vault opening, an inheritance, a cash release or a guaranteed windfall. Read the hidden stems under each branch and keep the storage labels separate from the branch element Earth and from any stem-relative Grave phase.
For Chart A, the Earth total of 4.0 is easy to misread because no visible stem is Earth. Check it by counting the main hidden stems only: Xu, Chou, Chen and Wei each contribute one primary Earth stem, giving four main hidden Earth stems and the 4.0 total. The other hidden stems remain present, so the branches are not reduced to Earth alone. Chen and Wei contain hidden Yi Wood at weights 0.5 and 0.3 respectively, giving Jia same-element Wood roots there; Chou and Xu contain no Wood. A clash label such as Chen–Xu or Chou–Wei does not delete those roots or turn hidden Wealth into released cash. The fixed 1/.5/.3 hidden weights are bookkeeping conventions, not measures of elemental strength, and all Ten Gods are assigned relative to the Jia Wood Day Master.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 乙 | 癸 | 甲 | 辛 |
| Branch | 酉 | 未 | 寅 | 未 |
| Ten God to Jia | Rob Wealth | Direct Resource | Day Master | Direct Officer |
| Hidden stems | 辛 Direct Officer (1) | 己 Direct Wealth (1) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.5) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
甲 Friend (1) 丙 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.5) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
Weighted element totals: Wood 3.6, Fire 1.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 2, Water 1.
Chart B is a fixed Jia Yang Wood Day Master teaching chart with pillars Yi You, Gui Wei, Jia Yin and Xin Wei. The Year branch is You, the Month branch is Wei, the Day branch is Yin and the Hour branch is Wei. Two Wei positions appear; there is no Chou, Chen or Xu. The Wei hidden stems are Ji Direct Wealth, Ding Hurting Officer and Yi Rob Wealth, and Jia also has a root in Yin. The calculator totals Earth at 2.3. Chart B does not show the same four-storage pattern as Chart A and has no paired Earth clash. Do not call the second Wei a separate element, and do not infer strong or weak just from totals. Compared with Chart A, the other columns vary; these are not a controlled experiment or a chronological change. A useful reader check is to list each branch position, mark which storage branches are present, and confirm whether an opposing branch exists before discussing any clash. For what a wealth reading can and cannot establish, see the limits of a Bazi wealth reading.
六 What the facts establish
The reference has four Earth branches, each with three listed hidden stems. Identifying Chen–Xu or Chou–Wei does not add, remove or transfer any entry in the calculator’s weighted count. No occurrence rate for “opened wealth” is supplied, because that outcome has no defined engine test.
