Gui Mao Day Pillar: Pure Wood Output and Eating God

一 What it is

The Gui Mao Day Pillar is a day pillar whose Day Master is Gui Yin Water sitting on a Mao branch that hides only Yi Eating God; because Water produces Wood, that Wood is Output rather than Resource. A useful everyday analogy is a watering can nourishing one young shoot: Water is the source and Wood is the growth it supports, not a reserve of Water feeding back into the can. What distinguishes this pillar is that Mao holds no hidden Water root and no Metal Resource, so the branch offers no direct support to the Day Master. The single hidden stem, Yi Eating God, carries a fixed 1 weight in the calculator's bookkeeping, which is a counting convention rather than a seasonal strength score. Gui at Mao is labeled Birth in the phase sequence, and because this Day Master is Yin, its phases run reverse; the Day position's Day Master phase and own-pillar-stem phase match only because the reference stem is identical there. That phase name is symbolic imagery, not a biological event or a life-event prediction. The hidden stem keeps its own polarity regardless of the branch's polarity. Reading the chart means checking which pillars actually change between two arrangements, not assuming every position shifts.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Open the Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem, 癸 Gui Yin Water; the bottom character is the branch, 卯 Mao. Small characters beside Mao show its hidden stems — here only 乙 Yi, the Eating God. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels or a dedicated growth-phase row, so read the phase from the article tables or the full overview.

To compare the two teaching charts, check which pillars actually change. In A, year 辛未 and month 辛丑 carry Indirect Resource and hidden 癸 Friend; in B, year 壬午 and month 乙巳 replace them, adding Rob Wealth and visible Eating God. The day and hour pillars stay 癸卯 and 丁巳 in both.

If the hour is unknown, treat it as unconfirmed rather than guessing a branch. Near a day boundary, use the calculator to calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and time instead of applying a universal rollover rule.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

First, separate the layers. The cycle index tells you where Gui Mao sits in the 60-pair sequence. The stem layer tells you Gui Yin Water. The branch layer tells you Mao Yin Wood. The hidden-stem layer tells you Yi Eating God at weight 1. The phase layer tells you the Day Master phase at the day branch. The complete chart layer adds the other three pillars, their stems, branches, hidden stems, and phases. Keeping these layers apart prevents a common mistake: treating the branch element as if it were the same as the hidden Ten God label.

Second, check roots and Resources correctly. A Water root must be hidden Water, either Ren Rob Wealth or Gui Friend. A same-element root is same-stem only if it matches the actual Day Master, Gui. Metal is Resource: Geng Direct Resource or Xin Indirect Resource. Earth belongs to the Officer category: Wu Direct Officer or Ji Seven Killings. Earth is never Resource and never a Water root. Visible Water stems are peers, not hidden roots. In chart A, the month branch Chou hides Gui Friend, so it supplies a Water root. In chart B, the year stem Ren is visible Rob Wealth, but the branches do not hide Water, so the root picture differs.

Third, read each chart column directly. Compare A and B pillar by pillar. The day pillar is Gui Mao in both, so the Day Master phase and own-pillar-stem phase match at the day position: both are Birth. What changes is elsewhere. A has Xin Indirect Resource in year and month, plus Chou hiding Gui Friend. B has Ren Rob Wealth in year, Yi Eating God in month, and no hidden Water root in the branches. Those positional changes alter how Output, Resource, and peer support appear in the complete chart. The Mao Rabbit Earthly Branch itself stays pure Wood Output in both charts.

Fourth, use the fixed 1, 0.5, and 0.3 weights as the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores. A hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs. The phase names describe symbolic cycle positions only. They are not biological, medical, financial, or life-event predictions. Read the chart as a set of placements and labels, then stop where the facts stop.

To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.

四 When the reading changes

Chart A: Chou Month, Twin Xin Resource Above

Here the month branch is Chou and both year and month stems are Xin, Indirect Resource, so visible Metal support surrounds the Gui Day Master. The only hidden Water root is the small Gui Friend inside Chou; Mao itself still holds Yi Eating God alone, with no Water root and no Metal Resource in the branch. Seasonally, Chou is a cold Earth month, and the calculator's fixed 1/.5/.3 weights show Metal outweighing Water, though those weights are bookkeeping values rather than seasonal strength scores. The day Master phase at Mao is Birth, and because this Gui is Yin the sequence runs reverse; the pillar stem phase matches because the reference stem is identical at the day position. That is positional symbolism, not a biological event. Career reflection stays limited to reading where Resource and Output actually sit; it does not forecast a job result.

Chart B: Ren Wu Year, Yi Si Month

Chart B replaces the year with Ren Wu, Rob Wealth, and the month with Yi Si, Eating God. Visible Yi Eating God now stands above Si, whose hidden stems are Bing Direct Wealth, Geng Direct Resource, and Wu Direct Officer. Ren at the year stem is a visible peer, not a hidden Water root, and Mao still contains Yi Eating God alone. The contrast with chart A is clear: the two visible Xin Resource stems disappear, while Geng Direct Resource remains hidden in both month and hour Si, while Eating God rises from hidden-only to a visible month stem. The day Master phase at Mao remains Birth, and the pillar stem phase matches for the same reference reason. A relationship reading can only describe how visible Eating God and Rob Wealth sit relative to the Day Master; it cannot predict partnership quality or timing.

Mao Holds No Borrowed Ren

Mao is Yin Wood, and for this Gui Yin Water Day Master it holds only Yi Eating God. No hidden Ren Rob Wealth and no hidden Gui Friend sit inside Mao, so no Water root can be borrowed from this branch. Metal is Resource, and Mao contains none; Earth is the Officer category, never Resource or a Water root. This matters when Ren appears elsewhere, as in chart B's year stem above Wu, because that placement still does not put a Water root inside Mao. The day pillar's own phase is Birth, and the reverse direction belongs to the Yin Day Master, not to a numerical cycle index. For practical study, how to use the 12 growth phases means treating each phase as a positional label for the Day Master against a branch, not a life-event prediction.

What Actually Changes Between A and B

Only the year and month pillars differ. In A, Xin Wei and Xin Chou bring Indirect Resource plus a hidden Gui Friend in Chou; in B, Ren Wu and Yi Si bring Rob Wealth and a visible Eating God, with Si hiding Bing Direct Wealth, Geng Direct Resource, and Wu Direct Officer. The day pillar Gui Mao and hour pillar Ding Si stay fixed, so the Day Master's own pillar facts do not shift. Observably, A leans toward visible Metal Resource with a small hidden Water root, while B leans toward visible Wood Output and Fire Wealth. Neither chart gives Mao a Water root or Metal Resource. Career and relationship readings share one limit: placements show categories and positions, not guaranteed outcomes. Eating God is a traditional Ten God label, not an appetite or dietary recommendation.

Weighted element totals: Wood 1.3, Fire 2.5, Earth 2.3, Metal 2.8, Water 1.5.

Chart A places Xin Indirect Resource in both the year and month stems, over Wei and Chou. The day pillar itself is Gui Yin Water above Mao Yin Wood, with only hidden Yi Eating God at full weight inside Mao. That single hidden stem defines the pillar: Gui produces Wood, so Yi is Output, and because Yi is Yin it maps to Eating God rather than Jia Hurting Officer. Yi keeps its own polarity even though Mao is a Yin branch.

Mao holds no hidden Ren or Gui, so the day branch supplies no Water root. It holds no hidden Geng or Xin, so it supplies no Metal Resource. Earth would be the Officer category, never Resource and never a Water root. In chart A the actual Water root sits elsewhere: hidden Gui Friend inside the Chou month branch, at half weight. That root is buried in the month, not in the day pillar, so the Output and the root occupy different columns.

At the day position, the Day Master phase is Birth, and the own-pillar-stem phase is also Birth, because the day stem and day branch share the same reference stem. Gui is Yin, so its phases run reverse; this is symbolic growth language, not a biological event. The 1/.5/.3 weights are bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores.

Two useful contrasts follow from the placements. First, the visible Xin stems are Resource, but they sit above Wei and Chou, not above Mao, so they do not turn the day branch into Resource. Second, the hidden Gui in Chou is a genuine Water root, while the visible Xin stems are not roots at all. The Eating God label describes a Ten God category, not an appetite or a dietary recommendation.

戊 Direct Officer (0.3)

Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 4, Earth 1.1, Metal 1, Water 2.

Chart B runs Ren Wu, Yi Si, Gui Mao, Ding Si. The Year is Ren Rob Wealth over Wu, hiding Ding Indirect Wealth and Ji Seven Killings. The Month is Yi Eating God over Si, hiding Bing Direct Wealth, Geng Direct Resource, and Wu Direct Officer. The Hour is Ding Indirect Wealth over Si, with the same three hidden stems. The Day remains Gui Mao, hiding Yi Eating God at full weight.

Compared with Chart A, the Day pillar does not change. What changes is the surrounding field. A carried Xin Indirect Resource in both Year and Month over Wei and Chou, and its Water root came through Chou's hidden Gui Friend. B replaces those with Ren Rob Wealth over Wu and Yi Eating God over Si. Ren is a visible peer, not a hidden Water root, and Wu hides no Water at all. So B's Water support sits in the Year stem rather than inside a branch.

In B, Yi Eating God is visible on the Month stem above Si, while Si still hides Geng Direct Resource. Metal Resource is therefore present in the branch, but it is not a Water root. Earth appears as Wu Direct Officer and Ji Seven Killings, which belong to the Officer category, never Resource or a Water root. Mao itself still holds no Water and no Metal.

Gui is Yin, so its phases run reverse. At the Day position the Day Master phase and pillar-stem phase both read Birth, since the reference stem is identical there. Do not borrow Ren's forward sequence at Mao, and do not treat Mao as Ren's Death phase. The Ren Yin Day Pillar shows how a different stem-branch pairing changes the same positional logic.

Reader check: confirm which pillars actually differ from A, then verify whether any branch hides Gui or Ren before calling B rooted. A visible peer is not a hidden root.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
