一 What it is
The Gui Si Day Pillar is a Gui Yin Water Day Master sitting on the Si branch, where Si's hidden stems are Bing Direct Wealth (1), Geng Direct Resource (.5), and Wu Direct Officer (.3). Think of a workstation with a budget, reference manual and quality checklist, but no backup battery: three different functions are present without a reserve source. Si holds no hidden Water stem, so Gui has no root in its own branch; Geng is Metal Resource, and Metal is not a Water root. All three hidden stems are yang even though Si is a yin branch, and each stem keeps its own polarity.
What distinguishes this pillar is that wealth, resource, and officer arrive together in the day branch, while the Day Master's own root is absent. Gui's growth phases run reverse, and at Si the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase both read Conception because the reference stem is identical at the day position. Conception here is phase symbolism, not a pregnancy or future-event forecast. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores.
In the Four Pillars grid, the day column shows Gui on top, Si below, and the small hidden-stem characters beneath. Reading Gui Si means reading those three hidden stems as Direct Wealth, Direct Resource, and Direct Officer, then checking whether any other branch actually supplies a Water root.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Open the Four Pillars grid and find the Day column. Its top character is the Day Master, Gui Yin Water; its bottom character is Si. The three hidden stems appear as small characters inside the Si branch cell: Bing, Geng and Wu. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels, so read those from the article mapping. The Day Master is the stem alone; the day pillar is stem plus branch together.
There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main grid. To check the Conception phase, use the article tables or the full overview. Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase reading or a strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and birth time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.
Compare the two examples by position. In A, the year and month pillars are Xin Wei and Xin Chou; in B they are Ren Wu and Ding Wei. The day and hour pillars stay Gui Si and Ding Si in both. So the visible changes sit in the year and month columns, while the day-level facts remain fixed.
三 How to read it
Begin with the layer of the cycle index. The day pillar sits at index 30, and that number identifies the pair itself, not the strength of anything inside it. Keep it separate from the stem element and polarity: Gui is Yin Water, and that yin quality sets the phase direction to reverse. Only after the index and the stem are settled should you open the branch and read what it stores. Mixing these layers is the most common error, because a low or high index says nothing about whether the Day Master has support.
Next, read the hidden Ten Gods of the Si Snake Earthly Branch. Bing Direct Wealth at 1 leads, Geng Direct Resource at .5 follows, and Wu Direct Officer at .3 closes. For this Day Master the full mapping runs Jia Hurting Officer, Yi Eating God, Bing Direct Wealth, Ding Indirect Wealth, Wu Direct Officer, Ji Seven Killings, Geng Direct Resource, Xin Indirect Resource, Ren Rob Wealth, Gui Friend. A hidden Water stem — Ren or Gui — would supply a Water root, and a same-element root counts as same-stem only when it matches the actual Day Master, Gui. Metal stays Resource; Earth stays Officer, never Resource and never a Water root. Visible peers are not hidden roots. The fixed 1 / .5 / .3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores, and a hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs.
Then place the phase. Because Gui is yin, its growth phases run reverse, so Si reads as Conception for the Day Master. At the day position the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase match, since the reference stem is identical there. Treat Conception as brief symbolism inside the phase cycle, not a biological or life-event prediction. The phase describes where the stem sits in its own sequence; it does not forecast pregnancy, timing, or any future event.
Finally, complete the chart. Compare A and B: A holds Xin Wei, Xin Chou, Gui Si, Ding Si, where the two Xin stems are Indirect Resource and Chou hides Gui Friend, giving a Water root. B holds Ren Wu, Ding Wei, Gui Si, Ding Si, where Ren Rob Wealth is a visible peer rather than a hidden root, and Wu hides only Ding Indirect Wealth and Ji Seven Killings. The day and hour pillars are identical in both; the year and month pillars are what actually change. In the calculator's Four Pillars grid, find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master Gui, the bottom character is Si, and the small hidden-stem characters sit inside the branch cell. The grid does not print hidden Ten God labels or a dedicated phase row, so match each hidden stem to the mapping above and check the phase separately.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Gui | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 丙 | Direct Wealth | 1 |
| 庚 | Direct Resource | 0.5 |
| 戊 | Direct Officer | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Gui phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 癸巳 | 30 | 胎 Conception |
四 When the reading changes
Chart A: Chou Month Gives the Day Master a Water Root
In chart A the month pillar is Xin Chou, and Chou's hidden stems include Gui Friend at 0.5. That is the only actual Water root in the chart, and it sits in the month, which is the seasonal context for the whole reading. The two Xin stems above Chou and Wei are Indirect Resource, and Metal here feeds Water rather than replacing it. Because the Day Master has a root, the Si branch's hidden Bing Direct Wealth, Geng Direct Resource and Wu Direct Officer can be engaged from a position of some reserve. The practical contrast with chart B is that A can treat the Si content as something to work with, while B has to lean on the visible Ren Rob Wealth for company and shared resources. Neither chart turns Si into a Water root, and Geng Direct Resource stays Resource, not a substitute root.
Chart B: Wei Month Adds No Hidden Water Root
Chart B replaces the month with Ding Wei, and Wei holds no Water at all. Apart from the Gui Day Master, the only additional Water stem is visible Ren Rob Wealth in the year, a peer rather than a hidden root. Fire rises to 5.5 and Metal falls to 1, so Xin Indirect Resource is absent, although hidden Geng Direct Resource remains in both Si branches, while Indirect Wealth is visible through the two Ding stems above Wei and Si. The Day Master phase at the Day position is Conception, and because the reference stem there is the same Gui, the pillar-stem phase also reads Conception. That phase is symbolic of a beginning stage, not a pregnancy or a forecast of a future event. The reading limit here is that the chart describes which categories are emphasized, not which outcome will occur.
Career and Reflection Contrast Between the Two Charts
Chart A's Metal total of 3.3 includes both visible Xin Indirect Resource and hidden Geng Direct Resource; its Water total is 1.5, so career reflection can lean on learning, method and structured support alongside the Si branch's Wealth and Officer content. Chart B's Metal of 1 and Water of 2 shift the emphasis toward Wealth and peer contact, with Resource playing a smaller role. This is a reading-limit point, not a prediction: the charts show which categories are present and where their supporting stems occur, not which job or financial result will follow. As a study exercise, compare Resource and the hidden Gui root in A with visible Wealth and the Ren peer in B. Neither chart should be read as a guarantee of career direction or financial outcome.
Relationship Reading and the Conception Phase
In both charts the Day branch is Si with Wu Direct Officer hidden at 0.3, and the Day Master phase is Conception. Direct Officer in the Day branch is often read as a relationship category, but the small weight and the symbolic phase mean the reading should stay modest. Chart A adds a Water root through Chou's hidden Gui, so the Day Master has more internal footing when engaging that Officer content; chart B relies on the visible Ren Rob Wealth, which is a peer presence rather than a root, so the same Officer content sits with less reserve. The Conception phase is best understood as a stage marker in the reverse cycle for a yin Day Master, and it is worth learning how to use the 12 growth phases before treating any phase as a life-event signal. Relationship reading here is limited to noting which categories are present and where their supporting stems occur, not to forecasting a partner or a timeline.

Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 3.5, Earth 2.6, Metal 3.3, Water 1.5.
Chart A places 癸 Gui Yin Water on 巳 Si at the day position, with 辛未 in the year, 辛丑 in the month, and 丁巳 in the hour. The day pillar is the anchor: Gui above, Si below. Inside Si sit 丙 Bing Direct Wealth at weight 1, 庚 Geng Direct Resource at 0.5, and 戊 Wu Direct Officer at 0.3. All three hidden stems are yang even though Si is a yin branch; a hidden stem keeps its own polarity regardless of the branch it sits in.
Si contains no hidden Water. Neither Ren nor Gui appears there, so this Day Master has no root in its own day branch. Geng is Metal Resource, and Metal is not a Water root. That distinction matters: Resource supports the Day Master as a category, but it does not store Water the way a hidden Ren or Gui would. The day phase is 胎 Conception, and because the reference stem at the day position is identical to the Day Master, the own-pillar-stem phase matches it. Conception here is symbolic station language, not a pregnancy or future-event forecast.
Two useful contrasts sit in the surrounding pillars. First, the month branch Chou hides 癸 Friend at 0.5, a genuine Water root for this Gui Day Master, while the day branch Si holds none. Second, the year and month stems are both 辛 Xin Indirect Resource, so Metal Resource is visible early, yet the day and hour Si branches repeat the same Wealth-Resource-Officer trio without adding Water. The hour stem 丁 Ding Indirect Wealth reaches Emperor phase, contrasting with the day's Conception.
What cannot follow from the label: the hidden Bing, Geng and Wu do not become Water roots, and the Conception phase does not predict a birth, project or life event. The label names positions and categories, not outcomes.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丁 | 癸 | 丁 |
| Branch | 午 | 未 | 巳 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Rob Wealth | Indirect Wealth | Day Master | Indirect Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Indirect Wealth (1) 己 Seven Killings (0.5) |
己 Seven Killings (1) 丁 Indirect Wealth (0.5) 乙 Eating God (0.3) |
丙 Direct Wealth (1) 庚 Direct Resource (0.5) 戊 Direct Officer (0.3) |
丙 Direct Wealth (1) 庚 Direct Resource (0.5) 戊 Direct Officer (0.3) |
| Gui Day Master phase | 绝 Extinction | 墓 Grave | 胎 Conception | 胎 Conception |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 冠带 Youth | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 5.5, Earth 2.1, Metal 1, Water 2.
Chart B sets Gui Yin Water over Si Yin Fire, with hidden Bing Direct Wealth at weight 1, Geng Direct Resource at weight .5, and Wu Direct Officer at weight .3. These are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores. All three hidden stems are yang even though Si is yin; a hidden stem keeps its own polarity. Si holds no Water root, and Metal is Resource rather than a Water root, so Gui's support here is indirect. Because Gui is Yin, its growth phases run reverse, and at the Day position the Day Master phase and own-pillar-stem phase both read Conception. That is symbolic phase imagery, not a pregnancy or life-event forecast.
Chart B's year pillar is Ren Wu: Ren Rob Wealth above Wu, which hides Ding Indirect Wealth and Ji Seven Killings. Its month pillar is Ding Wei: Ding Indirect Wealth above Wei, hiding Ji Seven Killings, Ding Indirect Wealth, and Yi Eating God. The day and hour pillars stay Gui Si and Ding Si, so Bing Direct Wealth, Geng Direct Resource, and Wu Direct Officer repeat in both Si branches.
Chart A instead has Xin Wei and Xin Chou as year and month, both visible Xin Indirect Resource, with Chou hiding Gui Friend. So the changed surrounding pillars are year and month: chart B replaces two Resource stems with Ren Rob Wealth and Ding Indirect Wealth. Hidden Water such as Ren or Gui supplies a Water root, and a same-element root counts as same-stem only when it matches the actual Day Master, Gui. Ren here is visible Rob Wealth, not a hidden root; only chart A's Chou carries Gui Friend. Metal stays Resource, and Earth belongs to the Officer category, never Resource or a Water root.
Reader check: open the Four Pillars grid, confirm the Day column reads Gui over Si with Bing, Geng, and Wu as the small hidden-stem characters, then compare only the year and month columns against chart A. For a related branch contrast, see this Xin Si Day Pillar discussion.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
