一 What it is
A Xin Si Day Pillar is a day pillar whose top stem is Xin Yin Metal and whose bottom branch is Si Yin Fire. Think of a fine silver blade resting inside a warm hearth: the blade is the Day Master, and the hearth is the branch that holds it. The Si branch hides three stems: Bing Direct Officer at weight 1, Geng Rob Wealth at weight .5, and Wu Direct Resource at weight .3.
What distinguishes this pillar is how those hidden stems relate to Xin. Bing is Xin's Direct Officer, not Seven Killings; Wu is Xin's Direct Resource, not Indirect Resource. Geng is same-element Metal, so it can serve as a Metal root even though its Ten God label is Rob Wealth. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots, not Earth. Earth is Resource here, not a root. A visible peer stem is not itself a hidden root; only a hidden Metal stem inside a branch supplies that root.
The Day Master phase at the day position is Death, and the own-pillar-stem phase at the day position is also Death. These are identical references, not two separate readings. Phase labels are structural markers, not health, lifespan, biological age, pregnancy, personality, career, or relationship predictions. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores. A stem combination or transformation cannot be inferred from this pillar alone.
二 Where to find it in your chart
To locate this pillar in your Four Pillars grid, find the Day column. The top character is the Day Master stem 辛; the bottom character is the branch 巳. Small hidden-stem characters appear inside or beside that branch cell: 丙, 庚, 戊. The Day Master is the stem alone; the day pillar is stem plus branch together. If your grid has no dedicated growth-phase row, look up 辛 at 巳 in the article tables or the full overview: it reads 死, Death. The Day Master phase and the day pillar-stem phase are the same reference here, so both show Death. That label is a phase reference, not a health, lifespan, biological-age, pregnancy, personality, career or relationship prediction.
Element balance totals are weighted sums, not a phase and not a strength verdict. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are not seasonal strength scores. A phase cannot create a root; hidden Metal can. For 辛 and 庚 alike, roots require hidden Metal, not Earth. Earth is Resource. Hidden 庚 or 辛 is a Metal root regardless of whether its Ten God label is Friend or Rob Wealth. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. Also keep a branch's main element distinct from every hidden stem inside it. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use a calculator with accurate birthplace and time rather than inventing a universal rollover rule. To check your own positions, calculate your chart.
三 How to read it
How to Read the Xin Si Day Pillar Step by Step
First, fix the layer of the cycle index. 辛巳 is entry 18 in the sixty-pillar sequence. That index tells you where the day pillar sits in the repeating cycle; it does not by itself add hidden stems, change Ten Gods or create roots. Keep this separate from the stem element and polarity layer. 辛 is Yin Metal. That single fact determines how every other stem relates to the Day Master: 丙 becomes Direct Officer, 庚 becomes Rob Wealth, 戊 becomes Direct Resource. Do not rename Bing as Seven Killings or Wu as Indirect Resource for a 辛 day. Those labels belong to other Day Masters. The Si Snake Earthly Branch page is useful background for the branch itself, but the Ten God labels still depend on the day stem.
Second, read the hidden Ten Gods inside 巳 with their fixed weights. 丙 Direct Officer carries weight 1, 庚 Rob Wealth carries 0.5, and 戊 Direct Resource carries 0.3. These are structural weights for the hidden stems, not seasonal strength scores. The presence of 庚 matters because Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal for roots. A visible Geng in another pillar is a peer, not itself a hidden root. Earth, including 戊 and 己, is Resource; it supports but does not root Metal in this method. Also, do not confuse 巳's main element, Fire, with every hidden stem inside it. The branch can be Fire by main element while still hiding Metal and Earth.
Third, add the phase layer without letting it override the root layer. For 辛, phase direction is reverse. At the day branch 巳, the Day Master phase is 死, Death. The own-pillar-stem phase at the day position is identical: 死, Death. A phase cannot create a root; only hidden Metal can. Phase labels are cycle references, not biological age, pregnancy, career or relationship forecasts. Finally, read the complete chart. Compare all four pillars, not just the day pillar. The Officer and Resource labels can guide a discussion of responsibilities and support, but cannot establish a partner's behavior or a career outcome.
To make this repeatable: identify the day stem and polarity, list the day branch's hidden stems with Ten Gods and weights, check for hidden Metal roots, then add phase and the wider chart. The two tables below give the exact day-branch hidden stems and the day pillar's cycle and phase references. Use them to verify those two layers before comparing the other pillars.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Xin | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 丙 | Direct Officer | 1 |
| 庚 | Rob Wealth | 0.5 |
| 戊 | Direct Resource | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Xin phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 辛巳 | 18 | 死 Death |
四 When the reading changes
Variation A: 辛未 Year, 庚子 Month
Chart A places 辛未 in the year and 庚子 in the month, with 辛巳 day and 癸巳 hour unchanged. The month branch 子 hides only 癸 Eating God, so the season leans toward Water output rather than Fire. The visible 庚 month stem is a Rob Wealth peer, but it is not a hidden root; the Metal root for 辛 still comes from the hidden 庚 inside the day branch 巳. The year branch 未 hides 己 Indirect Resource, 丁 Seven Killings, and 乙 Indirect Wealth, adding Earth Resource and some Fire pressure without hidden Metal. The hour branch 巳 repeats the day branch's hidden 丙 Direct Officer; the year 未 also adds 丁 Seven Killings. These are separate placements to distinguish when reading the day palace. Career reflection can note the visible peer and the 子 Eating God, but should not treat them as a forecast. The 死 phase at 巳 remains a phase label, not a strength score.
Variation B: 壬午 Year, 丁未 Month
Chart B changes the year to 壬午 and the month to 丁未, keeping 辛巳 day and 癸巳 hour. Here the month stem 丁 is Seven Killings, not Direct Officer, and the year branch 午 hides 丁 Seven Killings and 己 Indirect Resource. Fire is heavier around the day pillar, but the day branch 巳 still hides 丙 Direct Officer, 庚 Rob Wealth, and 戊 Direct Resource. The hidden 庚 remains the Metal root; 戊 remains Resource, not a root. Unlike Chart A, there is no visible 庚 peer, so the surface Metal support is thinner even though the day root is intact. Relationship reading is limited to the Officer actually hidden in 巳 and the Seven Killings in the surrounding branches. Career reflection should stay tied to these placements rather than predicting outcomes.
Variation C: Hour 癸巳 Versus a Non-Metal Hour Branch
Both charts share 癸巳 in the hour, which repeats the day branch’s hidden 丙, 庚, and 戊. This gives a second hidden 庚 Metal root and a second Officer-Resource cluster. If the hour branch instead held no hidden Metal, the day pillar would still root 辛 through its own 巳, but the chart would lose that repeated support. The hour stem 癸 is Eating God in both cases and does not root 辛. The observable difference is how much hidden Metal and Officer material the chart contains, rather than a prediction. The day pillar’s own reading stays stable: 丙 Direct Officer, 庚 Rob Wealth as root, 戊 Direct Resource. For phase work, see how to use the 12 growth phases alongside the hidden stems.
Variation D: Visible Peer Stems Without Hidden Metal
A chart may show 庚 or 辛 on the year or month stem, as Chart A shows 庚 on the month. Those visible stems are peers, but they are not hidden roots. In a different Xin chart whose branches contained no hidden Metal, visible 庚 or 辛 alone would not supply a hidden root. The day branch 巳 always supplies hidden 庚, so a 辛巳 day pillar always carries one Metal root. Adding visible peers changes the surface reading but not the root rule. This is why the day pillar is read from its hidden stems first, then from the visible stems around it. The 死 phase at 巳 stays a phase label, not a strength score or a prediction.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Xin Metal Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 庚 | 辛 | 癸 |
| Branch | 未 | 子 | 巳 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Friend | Rob Wealth | Day Master | Eating God |
| Hidden stems | 己 Indirect Resource (1) 丁 Seven Killings (0.5) 乙 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
癸 Eating God (1) | 丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
| Xin Day Master phase | 衰 Decline | 长生 Birth | 死 Death | 死 Death |
| Own pillar stem phase | 衰 Decline | 死 Death | 死 Death | 胎 Conception |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 2.5, Earth 1.6, Metal 4, Water 2.
Chart A places 辛未 in the year, 庚子 in the month, 辛巳 in the day, and 癸巳 in the hour. Find the day pillar in the Day column of the Four Pillars grid: the day stem 辛 sits above the day branch 巳, with the branch's hidden stems shown as small characters beneath it. In Xin Si, Xin Yin Metal rests on Si Yin Fire. Si hides three stems: 丙 Direct Officer at weight 1, 庚 Rob Wealth at .5, and 戊 Direct Resource at .3. The label "Xin Si" names this whole package, not one single influence.
Because the day stem is the Day Master, every other stem is read relative to Xin. Here 丙 is Direct Officer, not Seven Killings, and 戊 is Direct Resource, not Indirect Resource. 庚 is Rob Wealth, yet it is still Metal. The day position's phase reference is Death for both the Day Master and the pillar stem; that label is a phase marker, not a health, lifespan, or personality verdict.
Read the day pillar first: 丙 Direct Officer is the main hidden stem, 庚 Rob Wealth is secondary, and 戊 Direct Resource is the smallest weight. These weights are fixed teaching values, not seasonal strength scores. The visible year stem 辛 is a peer, but a visible peer is not itself a hidden root. Geng and Xin both require hidden Metal to serve as a root; Earth does not root Metal, because Earth is Resource. In this chart, the hidden 庚 inside both 巳 branches is the Metal root, regardless of its Rob Wealth label. The hidden 戊 supports Xin but does not root it.
Do not confuse 巳's main element, Fire, with every hidden stem inside it. 巳 is a Fire branch, yet it carries 丙, 庚, and 戊. No automatic stem combination or transformation follows from these labels.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丁 | 辛 | 癸 |
| Branch | 午 | 未 | 巳 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Hurting Officer | Seven Killings | Day Master | Eating God |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Seven Killings (1) 己 Indirect Resource (0.5) |
己 Indirect Resource (1) 丁 Seven Killings (0.5) 乙 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
丙 Direct Officer (1) 庚 Rob Wealth (0.5) 戊 Direct Resource (0.3) |
| Xin Day Master phase | 病 Sickness | 衰 Decline | 死 Death | 死 Death |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 冠带 Youth | 死 Death | 胎 Conception |
Weighted element totals: Wood 0.3, Fire 4.5, Earth 2.1, Metal 2, Water 2.
Chart B: Ren Wu, Ding Wei, Xin Si, Gui Si
Chart B runs 壬午 in the year, 丁未 in the month, 辛巳 in the day, and 癸巳 in the hour. The day pillar is the same 辛巳 as in Chart A, so the core reading holds: inside Si sit 丙 Bing Direct Officer at 1, 庚 Geng Rob Wealth at .5, and 戊 Wu Direct Resource at .3. Bing is Fire controlling Xin Metal, so it is an Officer, not a Seven Killings. Wu is Earth producing Xin Metal, so it is a Resource, not an Indirect Resource. Geng is same-element Metal, a hidden Metal root; Earth is Resource, not a root. Xin at Si carries the symbolic Death phase, a cycle label only, not a health or lifespan statement.
What changes from A is the surrounding weather. A's year pillar 辛未 becomes 壬午, and A's month pillar 庚子 becomes 丁未. The day and hour pillars are untouched. So B's year stem is 壬 Hurting Officer over 午, which hides 丁 Seven Killings at 1 and 己 Indirect Resource at .5. B's month stem is 丁 Seven Killings over 未, which hides 己 Indirect Resource at 1, 丁 Seven Killings at .5, and 乙 Indirect Wealth at .3. Fire is heavier here, and the visible month stem is no longer A's 庚 Rob Wealth.
Reader check: open the calculator, find the day column, confirm 辛 over 巳, then open the small hidden-stem characters beneath Si and verify Bing, Geng, and Wu. Scan every other branch for hidden Geng or Xin, since only hidden Metal roots the Day Master. For a contrasting Xin day pillar, see the Xin Wei Day Pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
