Hong Luan vs Tian Xi: How to Check Romance and Joy Stars Separately

一 What it is

What Hong Luan and Tian Xi Are

红鸾 (Hong Luan, the Red Phoenix) and 天喜 (Tian Xi, Heavenly Joy) are two traditional 神煞 (shensha, "star" markers) associated with romance and celebration. Both are looked up from the YEAR branch only: each year branch points to one target branch for Hong Luan and another for Tian Xi, and those two targets sit six positions apart. Deriving one target therefore derives the other, but that never proves either star appears. A star counts only when its target branch actually occurs somewhere in the four pillars. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.

Think of it like a seating chart at a banquet: your year branch is the host's table assignment, and the chart names two specific seats. Naming a seat is not the same as someone sitting in it; you still have to scan the room.

The historical names are labels, not event forecasts. "Joy" and "phoenix" describe the theme the ancients attached to these positions, not a promise of weddings, pregnancy, or compatibility. The lookup is mechanical: find the year branch, read its two targets, then check all four branches for actual hits. Both stars can appear, but never in the same slot.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Look in the Calculator

Open the homepage calculator and enter the birth date, then the birth hour if you know it. If the hour is unknown, select “I don’t know the hour” rather than guessing; the birth time cannot be inferred from star counts. Submit the form and the tool renders the Four Pillars chart first. Read the four columns as Year, Month, Day, and Hour, each with a stem above a branch.

Next, scroll to the Stars in your chart panel. Each entry names a star, its basis, and its hit positions. For Red Phoenix (红鸾) and Heavenly Joy (天喜), the basis is the YEAR branch only, so find the Year column and read its branch. Then apply the target table: Year branch 申 gives 红鸾 target 未 and 天喜 target 丑. Scan all four branches for those targets; a hit is reported by slot, such as Month or Hour.

Comparison topics require checking both labels independently. Deriving one target derives the other, but that never proves either appears. Both can occur, never in the same slot, and target-table opposition does not automatically cause a harmful clash or cancel stars. For other topics, use branch targets as shown. Example: Year 申, 红鸾 hits Hour 未, 天喜 hits Month 丑.

三 How to read it

How to Check Hong Luan and Tian Xi

Start with the Year branch. That branch is the basis. Read its row in the lookup table to get two targets: the 红鸾 (Hong Luan) target and the 天喜 (Tian Xi) target, which sit six branch positions apart. Deriving one target from the other is arithmetic, not evidence. A target becomes a hit only when that branch actually appears in the Four Pillars — Year, Month, Day, or Hour. The basis itself is not a hit unless it coincides with a target, which the table prevents. Scan all four branches for each target separately, because the two stars are checked independently.

Do not confuse the basis with the Day Master. The Day Master here is Jia 甲, used for ten gods interpretation: Jia maps to Friend, Yi to Rob Wealth, Bing to Eating God, Ding to Hurting Officer, Wu 戊 to Indirect Wealth, Ji to Direct Wealth, Geng to Seven Killings, Xin to Direct Officer, Ren to Indirect Resource, Gui to Direct Resource. Those labels describe relationships to the day stem; they do not select the Hong Luan or Tian Xi target. The star lookup runs on the Year branch alone, so a chart can show a strong Direct Officer weight and still have no 红鸾 hit. Weighted ten-god sums count visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at positional weights 1.0/0.5/0.3; only the visible day stem is excluded, and hidden Jia remains Friend. These counts are not strength scores and never change the star totals.

Work through the supplied examples. In the first chart, Year branch 申 gives 红鸾 target 未, found in the Hour branch, and 天喜 target 丑, found in the Month branch: both stars hit, in different slots. In the second chart, Year branch 未 gives 红鸾 target 申, found in the Day branch, while 天喜 target 寅 appears nowhere: one hit, one miss. Traditional interpretation treats these as markers, not measurements. A limitation worth stating once: the birth time cannot be inferred from star counts, and no star diagnoses a person or forecasts events. Compare none, one, or both configurations directly rather than reading a target-table opposition as a clash or cancellation. For fuller treatments, see the individual guides at /blogs/bazi-knowledge/shensha-hongluan and /blogs/bazi-knowledge/shensha-tianxi.

四 When it plays out differently

When Neither Star Appears

Start with the lookup itself. Using only the year branch, find the 红鸾 target and the 天喜 target in the table. Then scan all four branches. If neither target glyph occurs, the configuration is simply "neither." This is an observable absence, not a hidden signal. A reader can verify it in seconds: for year branch 未, the targets are 申 for 红鸾 and 寅 for 天喜; if no pillar branch shows 申 or 寅, neither star is present. The bounded reading is that the two star names do not appear in the chart. Nothing more follows from absence alone, and absence is not evidence of anything else in the chart.

One Star Without the Other

The two targets sit six branch positions apart, so deriving one target derives the other. That symmetry does not prove either appears. Check each target separately against the four branches. In the second supplied chart, year branch 未 gives 红鸾 target 申, which lands in the Day branch, while 天喜 target 寅 has no hit. The result is one star, not two. The same logic runs in reverse: a 天喜 hit can occur with no 红鸾 hit. Treat each as its own lookup and record which target actually matched. A single hit is a complete result for that star; it does not require the paired star to appear alongside it.

Both Targets Present in Different Slots

Both stars can occur, but never in the same slot. In the first supplied chart, year branch 申 gives 红鸾 target 未 at the Hour branch and 天喜 target 丑 at the Month branch. Two distinct slots, two distinct glyphs. To check this, list every branch with its slot label, then mark which target each one matches. If one branch carried both glyphs, that would be impossible under this rule; a single branch holds one branch character. The bounded interpretation is that both star names are present in separate positions. The opposition between the targets does not by itself create a harmful clash or cancel either star, so do not read the six-position gap as damage.

红鸾 Compared with 天喜

These are related but different stars, so compare them directly rather than merging them. 红鸾 is described as a marker for romance and marriage; 天喜 is described as celebration and the paired opposite of 红鸾. Both use the year branch only, and both targets are fixed by the same lookup. A chart can show 红鸾 without 天喜, 天喜 without 红鸾, both, or neither. The comparison is structural: same basis, opposite targets, separate hit checks. Do not treat a 天喜 hit as proof of a 红鸾 hit, or the reverse. For individual treatments, see the 红鸾 guide and the 天喜 guide.

Positional Distinction: Which Slot Carries the Hit

Slot matters for description, not for the count. In the first chart, 红鸾 appears at the Hour branch and 天喜 at the Month branch. In the second, 红鸾 appears at the Day branch. The lookup is identical in all cases; only the location of the matched branch changes. To verify, write the four branch characters in order—Year, Month, Day, Hour—and note which slot holds each target. A hit in the Day branch and a hit in the Hour branch are both single hits, but they are not the same configuration. State the slot when you report the star, and keep the interpretation bounded to the presence and position of that branch character. When both stars appear, report each slot separately rather than collapsing them into one combined result.

Red Phoenix: Hour 未 (branch). Basis: year branch Shen.

Heavenly Joy: Month 丑 (branch). Basis: year branch Shen, opposite the Red Phoenix.

Chart A: Geng Shen Year, Ji Chou Month, Jia Shen Day, Xin Wei Hour

Chart A applies the year-only rule for 红鸾 (Hong Luan, Red Phoenix) and 天喜 (Tian Xi, Heavenly Joy). The year branch 申 (Shen) is the sole basis. From the lookup, 申 sends Red Phoenix to 未 (Wei) and Heavenly Joy to 丑 (Chou). These are targets, not guarantees; a star exists only when its target actually appears in one of the four branches.

The trace confirms both hits. Red Phoenix lands in the Hour branch 未. Heavenly Joy lands in the Month branch 丑. Because the two targets sit six positions apart, deriving one from the other is possible, but that derivation alone never proves either star occurs. Here each target is independently present, so both stars register, and they occupy different slots.

Reading the visible and hidden stems under Jia 甲: the visible non-day stems are 庚 (Geng) in the year, 己 (Ji) in the month, and 辛 (Xin) in the hour. Hidden stems include 庚, 壬 (Ren), 戊 (Wu) in the year and day branches; 己, 癸 (Gui), 辛 in the month; and 己, 丁 (Ding), 乙 (Yi) in the hour. Under Jia, 庚 is Seven Killings, 己 is Direct Wealth, 辛 is Direct Officer, 壬 is Indirect Resource, 戊 is Indirect Wealth, 癸 is Direct Resource, 丁 is Hurting Officer, and 乙 is Rob Wealth.

Three concrete relationships stand out. First, the visible 庚 Seven Killings in the year shares its branch with hidden 庚, contributing 1.0 from the visible stem and 1.0 from the main hidden stem, without establishing twice the influence. Second, visible 己 Direct Wealth in the month is reinforced by hidden 己 in the same branch and again in the hour branch, giving wealth a broad visible footprint. Third, hidden 乙 Rob Wealth in the hour sits beside visible 辛 Direct Officer, placing Rob Wealth beneath a visible Direct Officer in the same pillar. This chart's distinctive configuration is that both romance markers appear, one in the Month and one in the Hour, while the day branch 申 itself carries no target hit.

Chart B — 己未 / 丁丑 / 甲申 / 乙丑
Position year month day hour
Stem 己 丁 甲 乙
Branch 未 丑 申 丑
Ten god Direct Wealth Hurting Officer Day Master Rob Wealth
Hidden stems 己 Direct Wealth (1)
丁 Hurting Officer (0.5)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.3)
己 Direct Wealth (1)
癸 Direct Resource (0.5)
辛 Direct Officer (0.3)
庚 Seven Killings (1)
壬 Indirect Resource (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
己 Direct Wealth (1)
癸 Direct Resource (0.5)
辛 Direct Officer (0.3)

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Direct Wealth 4.0; Hurting Officer 1.5; Rob Wealth 1.3; Direct Resource 1.0; Direct Officer 0.6; Seven Killings 1.0; Indirect Resource 0.5; Indirect Wealth 0.3.

Red Phoenix: Day 申 (branch). Basis: year branch Wei.

Chart B: One Star, Different Slot

Chart B has pillars 己未, 丁丑, 甲申, 乙丑, again with Jia 甲 as the Day Master. The year branch is 未 Wei, so the year-only rule applies: read the 未 row of the lookup table. That row gives 红鸾 Hong Luan target 申 Shen and 天喜 Tian Xi target 寅 Yin. Scanning all four branches, 申 appears in the Day slot, so Hong Luan is present; 寅 appears nowhere, so Tian Xi is absent. The trace records exactly this: basis year 未, target 申, hit day; basis year 未, target 寅, no hits. Note that the Day branch here is a target slot, not a second basis — the year branch alone supplies the target.

Contrast Chart A, whose year branch 申 Shen gave Hong Luan target 未 and Tian Xi target 丑. There Hong Luan landed in the Hour and Tian Xi in the Month, so both stars occurred, in different slots. In Chart B the basis branch changed from 申 to 未, which shifted both targets: Hong Luan moved from 未 to 申, and Tian Xi moved from 丑 to 寅. Only Hong Luan found a branch; Tian Xi did not. So the feature that changed is the basis branch and therefore the target pair; the feature that stayed the same is the method — one year branch, two targets six positions apart, each checked against the Four Pillars. Deriving one target from the other never proves either appears; each must actually occur.

The visible non-day stems also differ. Chart B shows 己 Ji (Direct Wealth), 丁 Ding (Hurting Officer), and 乙 Yi (Rob Wealth), plus hidden stems such as 庚 Geng (Seven Killings) and 癸 Gui (Direct Resource). These are ten-god relationships to Jia, not the star itself; Hong Luan is a separate marker and does not become a ten god. The counts are not strength scores, and the birth time cannot be inferred from them. For each star's own rules, see the individual guides on Hong Luan and Tian Xi.

六 How common is this configuration?

Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations, each star is checked independently. Here “first” means 红鸾 and “second” means 天喜. Repeated hits do not increase the chart count.

Configuration Combinations Proportion
Neither star 300,000 57.8704%
First star only 99,300 19.1551%
Second star only 99,300 19.1551%
Both stars 19,800 3.8194%

This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or a birth-registry frequency. We enumerate 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots, respecting the derived month and hour stems. Calendar duration and actual birth timing are not population-weighted.

The year branch alone supplies the target for each star. The day branch can be a hit but is not another basis. The engine result and an independent lookup implementation agree on every combination.
