一 What it is
What Hong Luan Means
Hong Luan (红鸾), the Red Phoenix, is a traditional star of romance and relationship celebration. In a Bazi chart it marks a symbolic theme, not a scheduled event: it does not promise marriage, attraction, compatibility, or a date. The name is poetic imagery, not a forecast that something will literally happen. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
Think of it like a wedding invitation in the mail. It signals a festive occasion is being planned, but it is not the ceremony itself, and it does not tell you whether you will attend or how the day will go.
The lookup is year-only. Take the Year branch as the single basis, then scan all four branches for its target, which never equals that basis. For example, a 戌 (Xu) Year points to 巳 (Si), so any 巳 in the chart counts as a hit. A 未 (Wei) Year points to 申 (Shen), so a 申 anywhere among the four branches registers. The birth time cannot be inferred from these counts.
One limitation: this star is not a strength score, and it never diagnoses a person. Its target is also distinct from Peach Blossom, which uses both year and day triads. Heavenly Joy sits six positions opposite Red Phoenix, but that relationship is not a harmful clash and cancels neither star.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Find Red Phoenix in the Calculator
Open the homepage calculator, enter the birth place and date, then the birth hour if you know it. If the hour is unknown, select I don't know the hour; do not invent a time, because the hour pillar would be fabricated and every branch scan would inherit that error.
After submitting, look at the Four Pillars output and find the lower row of branches beneath the four stems. Read the Year branch, the leftmost branch, since Red Phoenix (红鸾, Hong Luan) uses a year-only rule: the Year branch is the sole basis, and the Day branch is never a second basis.
Next, open the Stars in your chart panel. Locate the exact English name Red Phoenix, paired with 红鸾. Its basis line should read the Year branch, for example year branch Xu (戌). Its hit positions list which of the four branches match the lookup target; in the first sample chart, year branch Xu targets Si (巳), hitting the Month and Hour branches. In the second, year branch Wei (未) targets Shen (申), hitting the Day branch.
Compare those hit slots against the branch row you just read. The target never equals the Year basis itself. Heavenly Joy sits six positions opposite Red Phoenix, but that is not a clash and cancels neither star.

三 How to read it
How the Red Phoenix lookup works
Start with the Year branch as the sole basis for Hong Luan (红鸾). Read the basis-to-target pair from the lookup: for example, a 戌 year branch targets 巳. Then scan all four branches — Year, Month, Day, Hour — for that target. A hit is any branch equal to the target; the target never equals the Year basis, so the Year branch itself cannot register as a hit. In the first sample chart, 壬戌 / 乙巳 / 甲辰 / 己巳, the Year branch 戌 targets 巳, and the Month and Hour branches both hit. In the second, 己未 / 丁丑 / 甲申 / 乙丑, the Year branch 未 targets 申, and only the Day branch hits. The method is easier to compare with Wang Shen (亡神): the Loss Star and How to Read Its Position in Bazi.
Keep basis and hit separate. The basis is the Year branch that selects the target; the hit is the branch that matches it. Because this rule is year-only, do not add the Day branch as a second basis. That differs from Peach Blossom, which uses both year and day triads. If a year/day triad star merges its targets, scan all four branches after merging; Hong Luan itself stays year-only.
The Day Master is Jia 甲 in every chart here, so the ten-god labels are fixed: Jia is Friend, Yi is Rob Wealth, Bing is Eating God, Ding is Hurting Officer, Wu 戊 is Indirect Wealth, Ji is Direct Wealth, Geng is Seven Killings, Xin is Direct Officer, Ren is Indirect Resource, and Gui is Direct Resource. Those labels interpret visible non-day stems and hidden stems, but they do not choose the Red Phoenix target. The star lookup depends on the Year branch, not on the Day Master. Weighted ten-god sums count visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at positional weights 1.0/0.5/0.3; only the visible day stem is excluded, while hidden Jia remains Friend. Hidden contributions follow that convention once here, and the counts are not strength scores.
Traditional interpretation treats Red Phoenix as romance and relationship-celebration symbolism, not a guarantee of marriage, attraction, compatibility, or an event date. It is not Peach Blossom, and Heavenly Joy is six positions opposite Red Phoenix without being a harmful clash or cancellation. The birth time cannot be inferred from star counts, and no star changes totals or diagnoses a person. Use the lookup, compare actual configurations, and stop there.

四 When it plays out differently
When the target branch is absent
Start with the lookup itself: the Year branch 年支 selects one target. If the Year branch is 子 Zi, the target is 卯 Mao; if it is 戌 Xu, the target is 巳 Si. Now scan all four branches — Year, Month, Day, Hour. A configuration can contain no hit at all. That absence is a complete, observable result: Red Phoenix 红鸾 simply does not appear in the chart's branches. It is not a hidden signal or a delayed event. Check it by listing the four branch glyphs and comparing each against the single target; if none matches, the count is zero. This point connects directly with Tian Xi (天喜): the Heavenly Joy Star and Where It Appears in Your Chart.
Repeated target slots
The target can land in more than one slot. Take Year branch 戌 Xu: the target is 巳 Si. If both the Month branch and the Hour branch are 巳, the scan returns two hits, and both are recorded. The count is two, not one doubled into a stronger verdict. To verify, mark every branch equal to the target and count the marks. A repeated hit tells you where the target recurs positionally; it does not multiply meaning, rank the slots, or imply that two markers outweigh one.
Red Phoenix compared with Peach Blossom
Red Phoenix and Peach Blossom 桃花 are related but different stars, and the difference is mechanical. Red Phoenix is year-only: one basis, the Year branch, producing one target. Peach Blossom uses both the year and day triads, so it can draw on two bases. When you compare them, run each lookup separately and keep the bases distinct. A chart may show Red Phoenix in the Month and Hour while Peach Blossom appears elsewhere or not at all. Neither star changes the other's total, and neither cancels the other. The comparison is about which basis produced which target, not about combining them into a single score.
Heavenly Joy as the opposite position
Heavenly Joy 天喜 sits six positions opposite Red Phoenix. If Red Phoenix targets 巳 Si, Heavenly Joy targets 亥 Hai. That opposition describes the lookup targets. It does not establish that both branches occur in this chart. If both are present, their traditional branch-clash relationship is a separate observation, not automatic harm or cancellation of either star. Check it by finding the Red Phoenix target, counting six branches around the cycle, and scanning all four branches for that second glyph. You may find Red Phoenix alone, Heavenly Joy alone, both, or neither. Each result stands on its own lookup.
Positional distinction: Day branch versus other slots
Where a hit falls matters for description, not for weight. A Red Phoenix hit in the Day branch 日支 sits in the spouse palace; a hit in the Month or Hour branch does not; the Year basis itself cannot match this star's target. Using Year branch 未 Wei, the target is 申 Shen. If the Day branch is 申, the hit is positional to the Day slot. Verify by reading the slot label attached to the matching branch. This is a locational fact about the chart, not a statement about marriage timing, partner quality, or any life outcome. The same target in the Month branch would be described as a Month-slot hit instead.
Independent check against a Ten God total
Star presence and Ten God counts are separate measurements. In a chart with Year branch 戌 Xu, Red Phoenix hits 巳 in the Month and Hour. The weighted ten-god sums — visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 — might show Indirect Wealth 2.6, Eating God 2.0, Rob Wealth 1.5, and smaller values elsewhere. Those numbers count stems, not branches, and they do not include or exclude Red Phoenix. To compare, compute the ten-god total from the stems and hidden stems, then run the branch lookup independently. A high or low ten-god sum neither creates nor removes a Red Phoenix hit, and the star count never adjusts the ten-god total.

Chart A: 壬戌 · 乙巳 · 甲辰 · 己巳
Chart A uses 甲 Jia as the Day Master. Its four pillars are 壬戌 (year), 乙巳 (month), 甲辰 (day), and 己巳 (hour). The Red Phoenix 红鸾 lookup here is year-only: the Year branch is 戌 Xu, and the table pairs 戌 with the target 巳 Si. Scanning all four branches, 巳 appears twice, in the Month and Hour branches. So the Red Phoenix lands on both 巳 Si positions, not on the Day branch. That is the whole basis: one year branch, one target, two hits. The target never equals the Year basis, and the Day branch 辰 Chen is not used as a second basis. This is a lookup rule, not a prediction, and the star itself does not guarantee any relationship event.
Reading stems under Jia, the visible non-day stems are 壬 Ren (Indirect Resource), 乙 Yi (Rob Wealth), and 己 Ji (Direct Wealth). Hidden stems add more: 戌 hides 戊 Wu, 辛 Xin, 丁 Ding; 巳 hides 丙 Bing, 庚 Geng, 戊 Wu; 辰 hides 戊 Wu, 乙 Yi, 癸 Gui. Three concrete relationships stand out. First, 乙 Yi sits visibly in the Month and also hides in 辰, so Rob Wealth appears in two locations. Second, 戊 Wu hides in 戌, both 巳 branches, and 辰, giving Indirect Wealth a broad hidden footprint. Third, 庚 Geng hides in both 巳 branches as Seven Killings, while 辛 Xin hides once in 戌 as Direct Officer. Hidden 甲 Jia does not appear, so Friend is absent from the hidden layer.
What makes this chart distinctive is the doubled 巳 Si. Red Phoenix, Academic Star 文昌贵人, Robbery Star 劫煞, and Loss Star 亡神 all land on the same Month and Hour branches. The other supplied stars place Canopy 华盖 on the Year 戌 and Day 辰. These are positional counts, not strength scores, and the birth time cannot be inferred from them.

庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Direct Wealth 4.0; Hurting Officer 1.5; Rob Wealth 1.3; Direct Resource 1.0; Direct Officer 0.6; Seven Killings 1.0; Indirect Resource 0.5; Indirect Wealth 0.3.
Red Phoenix: Day 申. Basis: year branch Wei.
Chart B: Red Phoenix on the Day Branch
Chart B uses pillars 己未, 丁丑, 甲申, 乙丑. The Year branch is 未 (Wei), so the lookup row for 未 gives target 申 (Shen). Scanning all four branches, only the Day branch 申 matches. That is the whole trace: basis 未, target 申, one hit on the Day. The birth time cannot be inferred from this count, and the star does not diagnose a person or predict an event.
Contrast Chart A, whose Year branch 戌 (Xu) targets 巳 (Si), hitting Month and Hour. Chart B keeps the same rule and the same Day Master, Jia 甲, but the Year branch changed from 戌 to 未, so the target moved from 巳 to 申 and the hit moved from Month and Hour to Day. The star itself did not change; only its location did. Because the rule is year-only, the Day branch is never a second basis here; it is only a scan location. The target never equals the Year basis.
Ten-god sums also differ. Chart B's visible non-day stems are 己 (Direct Wealth), 丁 (Hurting Officer), and 乙 (Rob Wealth). Hidden stems add Direct Wealth from 未 and 丑, Direct Resource from 丑, Seven Killings from 申, and Indirect Resource from 申. Chart A instead carries strong Indirect Wealth and Eating God, with Rob Wealth and Direct Wealth present but lighter. These are counts of stem relationships, not strength scores, and the Red Phoenix label adds no weight to any of them.
Other stars shift too. Chart B shows Nobleman on Year, Month, and Hour; Canopy on Year; Robbery Star, Solitary Star, and Red Phoenix on Day. Chart A had Academic Star, Robbery Star, Loss Star, and Red Phoenix on Month and Hour. Heavenly Joy's opposite position is a separate relationship, not a clash that cancels either star.
六 How common is this configuration?
Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations in the enumeration used here, 红鸾 appears in 22.9745% (119,100 combinations). A chart is counted once if it contains at least one match.
This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people and not the frequency in a birth registry. We enumerate 60 year pillars, 12 solar-month slots, 60 day pillars and 12 hour slots, with the paired stem rules respected. Calendar duration, birth timing and unknown hours are not population-weighted.
This lookup uses the year branch alone and checks its target against the four branch positions. The target cannot equal its own year basis in this table, so matches fall in Month, Day or Hour. The day branch is a possible hit location, not a second lookup basis. None of these labels establishes a life outcome.
