How Clashes and Combinations Affect a Bazi Chart: A Layered Reading Method

一 What it is

What Clashes and Combinations Mean

Think of a chart like a busy train station. Some passengers arrive together and share a platform; others rush in opposite directions. A clash and a combination are simply two kinds of timetable overlap: one marks branches pulling apart, the other marks branches drawn together. Neither tells you whether the journey ends well.

Start with identification, not meaning. A lookup match is a visible label: two listed branches form a pair, all three form a complete frame, and punishments, harms or destructions are recorded separately. For example, a chart may show a 子–丑 pair, a 子–午 clash and a 丑–午 harm at once. That is a set of relationships, not a verdict. Six Combinations belong to this identification layer, alongside clashes and other relations.

Only after listing every match do you interpret. Preserve the original stems, branches, hidden stems and five-element totals; do not score relations, assume one cancels another, or claim a transformation occurred. A combination does not guarantee support, and a clash does not guarantee loss. Raw totals are not a strength verdict, and the visible Day Master counts in five-element totals but is excluded only from weighted Ten-God totals.

What this topic cannot prove: it cannot confirm character, health, money, career or any event. It shows where relationships appear, leaving meaning for careful, layered reading.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Enter Birth Data and Read the Branch Row

Begin at the input panel. Enter the birth date, clock time, and place, then confirm the calendar type before generating anything. Year and Month boundaries follow China time, while Day and Hour are recalculated using true solar time. If the birth time is unknown, leave it blank: the calculator then shows three pillars and no Hour Pillar rather than inventing one.

Once the chart appears, look at the bottom character in each column. That row holds the four Earthly Branches: one beneath the Year, one beneath the Month, one beneath the Day, and, when time is known, one beneath the Hour. Read them left to right as a set, not as isolated symbols.

Next, compare the branch row against the relation tables. A Six Combination links two listed branches; a Three Combination needs all three members present; a Six Clash opposes two listed branches. Punishments, harms, and destructions are recorded separately, because each has its own member list. Identification comes first: note which pairs or frames exist, and where they sit, before asking what they might mean.

Keep the original stems, branches, hidden stems, and five-element totals visible while you work. A relation does not erase the characters that form it, and no single relation automatically cancels another. Treat every label as interpretive vocabulary, then calculate your chart.

三 How to read it

How to Identify Interactions Step by Step

Begin with the four pillars exactly as calculated. Year and Month follow China time, while Day and Hour use true solar time; if the birth time is unknown, work without an invented Hour Pillar. Keep every original stem, branch, hidden stem and total visible before interpreting anything.

First, list the branches by position: year, month, day and hour. Second, compare each pair and each possible trio against the supplied lookup. Third, record every match by name and members, such as a Six Combination or a Six Clash. Fourth, note whether membership is complete or partial. A complete frame contains all three listed members, while a partial frame contains only some of them. Fifth, record repeated members separately, because a branch appearing twice can participate in more than one listed relation. Sixth, note positions, since a year–month pair and a day–hour pair occupy different structural locations even when the labels match.

Use the same discipline for punishments, harms and destructions: record them separately rather than folding them into a combination or clash. For hidden stems, apply this calculator’s list-order weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3. Raw five-element totals are not a strength verdict, and the visible Day Master counts in those totals but is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals.

Coexistence is normal. One branch may belong to a pair and a trio, or a pair may sit beside a clash involving another branch. Do not score relations, declare that one automatically cancels another, or assert transformation. For example, 子–丑, 子–午 and 丑–午 can all be recorded in one chart, while 寅–午–戌 can coexist with 寅–申. Three Combinations therefore belong in the same inventory as pairs and clashes, not in a separate verdict.

Finish by preserving the original chart and the complete match list. Identification comes before interpretation, so a repeatable reading states what is present, where it sits, whether it is complete or partial, and what repeats. Only then can later interpretation proceed without inventing rules or outcomes.

Observable label Members or basis Bounded reading
Combination pair two listed members check exact table
Complete frame all three listed members check exact table
Clash pair two listed members check exact table
Punishment / harm / destruction exact listed members record separately

四 When the reading changes

Repeated labels across pillars

A label can appear more than once without becoming stronger in any simple sense. In the first sample chart, 甲 appears as the year stem and the day stem, while the hidden stems of 寅 also include 甲. The visible Day Master is counted in the five-element totals, but it is excluded only from article weighted Ten-God totals, so the Friend weight of 2 comes from the year stem and the hidden 甲 in 寅 rather than from the day stem itself. A concrete check is to list every visible and hidden occurrence separately, then compare that list with the printed totals. Repeated labels show where a category is distributed, not whether a life outcome will follow.

Hidden-only versus visible occurrence

Hidden stems can carry a Ten-God category that never appears on a visible stem. In the first chart, Direct Officer appears only through the hidden 辛 in 丑, with a weight of 0.3, while Seven Killings appears visibly as the hour stem 庚 with a weight of 1. A useful check is to mark each category as visible, hidden-only, or both, then read the hidden-only entries as quieter presences inside a branch. Hidden-only occurrence does not mean the category is absent, and visible occurrence does not mean it dominates. Both are interpretive vocabulary, not empirical outcomes.

Positional differences within the same relation

The same relation can sit in different positions and therefore touch different parts of the chart. In the first sample, the 子–丑 Six Combination links the year branch to the month branch, while the 子–午 Six Clashes links the year branch to the hour branch. The 丑–午 Six Harm is recorded separately. A concrete check is to note which pillars each relation connects, because a year–month link and a year–hour link occupy different structural locations. Position changes what is adjacent, not whether one relation automatically cancels another. Do not score the relations or assert transformation.

Coexistence with another relation or Ten-God category

Relations and Ten-God categories often coexist in the same branch. In the second sample, the 寅–午–戌 Three Combination spans the year, day and month branches, while the 寅–申 Six Clash links the year branch to the hour branch. The month branch 戌 also holds hidden 辛, a Direct Officer, and hidden 丁, a Hurting Officer. A concrete check is to record the combination, the clash and the hidden Ten-God labels side by side before reading anything. Coexistence means the chart contains several simultaneous signals; it does not mean one signal overrides the others or that a Wealth star guarantees money. Keep the original stems, branches, hidden stems and totals intact, and treat the raw totals as counts rather than a strength verdict.

五 Worked chart examples

These teaching charts were screened by the site’s current calendar engine. They are not people or client stories. Tables and totals are generated from frozen engine rules; the prose only explains what is shown.

Chart A: Reading Coexisting Relations Without Rushing to a Verdict

Chart A has four pillars: 甲子 in the year, 丁丑 in the month, 甲寅 on the day, and 庚午 in the hour. The Day Master is 甲, a yang Wood stem. Its visible companions are the year stem 甲 and the hidden 甲 inside the day branch 寅. The month stem 丁 is a Hurting Officer, while the hour stem 庚 is a Seven Killings.

Before interpreting anything, list the branch relations exactly as they appear. The calculator reports a Six Combination between 子 and 丑, a Six Clash between 子 and 午, and a Six Harm between 丑 and 午. These three relations share branches, so they form a small web rather than isolated pairs. Identification comes first: note which positions carry each branch, then record each relation separately.

The hidden stems add further detail. 子 hides 癸, a Direct Resource. 丑 hides 己, 癸, and 辛, giving Direct Wealth, Direct Resource, and Direct Officer. 寅 hides 甲, 丙, and 戊, giving Friend, Eating God, and Indirect Wealth. 午 hides 丁 and 己, giving Hurting Officer and Direct Wealth. Using this calculator’s list-order convention, hidden-stem weights are 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3.

The supplied five-element totals are Wood 3, Fire 2.5, Earth 1.8, Metal 1.3, and Water 1.5. The visible Day Master counts in these totals. The weighted Ten-God totals are Friend 2, Hurting Officer 2, Direct Wealth 1.5, Direct Resource 1.5, Seven Killings 1, Eating God 0.5, Indirect Wealth 0.3, and Direct Officer 0.3. The Day Master is excluded only from these weighted Ten-God totals.

Raw totals are not a strength verdict. A combination does not automatically cancel a clash, and no transformation should be assumed. Read the Six Combinations, Six Clashes, and Three Combinations references to keep each relation distinct.

Relevant observation(s) — Three Combination: 寅–午–戌; Six Clash: 寅–申.

Element totals — Wood 2.0; Fire 2.8; Earth 3.1; Metal 1.5; Water 1.5.

Weighted Ten-God totals (excluding only the visible Day Master) — Friend 1.0; Eating God 1.5; Hurting Officer 1.3; Indirect Wealth 2.6; Direct Wealth 0.5; Seven Killings 1.0; Direct Officer 0.5; Indirect Resource 1.5.

Reading Chart B: One Frame, One Clash

Chart B has pillars 丙寅, 戊戌, 甲午 and 壬申. Its listed relations are a Three Combination of 寅–午–戌 and a Six Clash of 寅–申. Identification comes first: record each relation exactly as listed, then read the chart around it.

The 寅–午–戌 frame spans year, day and month branches. Because all three members are present, the frame is complete, so it deserves attention as a structural feature. The 寅–申 clash links the year branch to the hour branch. Both relations involve 寅, so they coexist rather than replacing one another. Do not score them, assume one cancels the other, or assert transformation.

Preserve the original stems, branches, hidden stems and totals. The visible Day Master 甲 counts in the five-element totals: wood 2, fire 2.8, earth 3.1, metal 1.5, water 1.5. In the weighted Ten-God totals, the Day Master is excluded, leaving Friend 1, Eating God 1.5, Hurting Officer 1.3, Indirect Wealth 2.6, Direct Wealth 0.5, Seven Killings 1, Direct Officer 0.5 and Indirect Resource 1.5. Hidden-stem weights of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.3 follow this calculator’s list-order convention. Raw totals are not a strength verdict.

Contrast With Chart A

Chart A, 甲子, 丁丑, 甲寅 and 庚午, lists a Six Combination of 子–丑, a Six Clash of 子–午 and a Six Harm of 丑–午. Chart B instead has one complete frame and one clash. Chart A’s relations cluster around 子 and 丑; Chart B’s centre on 寅. Neither pattern is automatically better or worse.

A Repeatable Observation Method

  • List every relation by exact members and type.
  • Note which pillars and branches each relation touches.
  • Check whether members overlap, as 寅 does in Chart B.
  • Keep original stems, branches, hidden stems and totals unchanged.
  • Read each relation separately before comparing charts.

六 Base-rate boundary

The full enumeration used by this site contains 518,400 valid Four Pillars combinations: 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots. This topic contains several possible labels or thresholds, so a single combined percentage would conceal which exact condition was counted.

Any later frequency must define one exact condition first and report an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people, income outcomes, careers or birth records. The presence of a label is not an event forecast.

Calculate your chart and compare the relevant rows with the lookup and examples above.
