一What Hurting Officer actually is
Hurting Officer, Shang Guan 伤官, is the element your Day Master produces with the opposite polarity. Your Day Master is the self of the chart, read from the day pillar. The classical texts Di Tian Sui 滴天髓 and Zi Ping Zhen Quan 子平真诠 treat it as a talented but unruly star. The common misreading says a person with Hurting Officer is a rebel who cannot hold a job. That misreading mistakes a structural label for a personality verdict. The name records a relation between two stars, not an injury, and one star does not carry a career outcome by itself. Four classical configurations are built on Hurting Officer; the article will show how to tell which one is in your chart. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Two questions make the ten gods
Every god in a chart is built from two questions only: how does the element relate to your Day Master, and does it share your Day Master’s polarity? Polarity here means yin or yang. Every heavenly stem is either yang or yin. The yang stems are Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren; the yin stems are Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui.
| Relation of the element to the Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element as the Day Master | Friend | Rob Wealth |
| Produces the Day Master | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| Produced by the Day Master | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| Controlled by the Day Master | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Controls the Day Master | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
Hurting Officer sits in the row “Produced by the Day Master,” on the opposite-polarity side. To find what you produce, move one step forward in the production cycle: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood.
Why the name says “Hurting”
The name comes from the control cycle, not from harm done to a person. The control cycle runs Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. In Bazi terminology, Output means Eating God plus Hurting Officer, and Control means Direct Officer plus Seven Killings. Output controls Control. The opposite-polarity output is the one that strikes the Direct Officer, so that star is named Hurting Officer.
A concrete case: Jia Wood. Metal controls Wood, so Wood’s Direct Officer is a metal-based star. Wood produces Fire, and Fire controls Metal. Ding Fire is the opposite-polarity fire stem to Jia yang Wood, so Jia Wood’s Hurting Officer is Ding.
| Day Master | Hurting Officer |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Ding 丁 |
| Yi 乙 | Bing 丙 |
| Bing 丙 | Ji 己 |
| Ding 丁 | Wu 戊 |
| Wu 戊 | Xin 辛 |
| Ji 己 | Geng 庚 |
| Geng 庚 | Gui 癸 |
| Xin 辛 | Ren 壬 |
| Ren 壬 | Yi 乙 |
| Gui 癸 | Jia 甲 |
Where it sits in a chart
A Bazi chart has four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar has a stem on top and an earthly branch below. Hurting Officer can appear in any of the three visible stems other than the day stem: year, month, or hour. It can also be hidden inside an earthly branch.
Each earthly branch holds one to three hidden stems, called main qi, middle qi, and residual qi. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest position in the chart. In the weighting used by the site’s calculator, a visible stem counts 1.0, a hidden main qi counts 1.0, a middle qi counts 0.5, and a residual qi counts 0.3. That is how the chart readings discussed later turn a presence into a number.
二The four kinds of Hurting Officer charts
The same star behaves in four different ways depending on what stands next to it.
A Hurting Officer is not a stand-alone label. It is the element your Day Master produces with the opposite polarity, and the five-element cycle keeps moving after that production happens. The produced element can go on to produce Wealth, it can be controlled by a Resource, it can strike the Direct Officer, or it can keep being produced while the support behind the Day Master runs thin. Four classical configurations name those four situations.
Before the counting, two definitions. Output means Eating God plus Hurting Officer, the two stars the Day Master produces. Support means Friend, Rob Wealth, Direct Resource and Indirect Resource, the stars that share the Day Master’s element or produce it. Wealth means the stars the Day Master controls, Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth. Direct Officer, Zheng Guan 正官, is the star that controls the Day Master with the opposite polarity and, in the classical reading, stands for authority, rules and reputation. Each shape below describes which neighbour to look for and why that neighbour changes what Hurting Officer does.
1. Hurting Officer producing Wealth, Shang Guan Sheng Cai 伤官生财
The arrangement: a chart that has Hurting Officer and also has a Wealth star anywhere in the pillars. The mechanism is a two-step chain in the production cycle. For a Wood Day Master, Wood produces Fire, and Fire is the Hurting Officer; Fire then produces Earth, and Earth is the Wealth. So the output star is not the end of the line. The thing you say or make goes on to feed the thing you manage and live on, which is why the classical texts rate this the most useful form of Hurting Officer.
How it tends to behave: expression finds an income. When this arrangement is present, the sharp observation tends to be the one a client pays for; the performance tends to be the one an audience comes back for; the thing built in the workshop tends to be the thing others buy. The gift of saying what one sees turns into reports, proposals, stages and products that leave the person’s hands and enter other people’s hands. That is the asset side.
The liability is that producing Wealth does not make the Output free. Every act of production still spends the Day Master’s own element. When a person with this arrangement keeps taking the next paid project without a gap, the expression that earned the income begins to run ahead of the energy that funds it, and the cost shows up as exhaustion after a long stretch of over-expression. The classical high rating describes the direction the Output takes, not a promise that the fuel is inexhaustible.
2. Hurting Officer paired with Resource, Shang Guan Pei Yin 伤官配印
The arrangement: a chart that has Hurting Officer and also a Resource star — Direct Resource or Indirect Resource — present with enough weight to control the Output. Resource is the star family that produces the Day Master. For a Wood Day Master, Water is the Resource, and Water both produces Wood and, in the control cycle, controls Fire. One star does both jobs: it refills the Day Master from behind and it governs the Hurting Officer from the front. A Resource that appears as a residual qi hidden inside a branch carries less weight than a Resource sitting as the main qi of the month branch, and the pairing matters when the Resource can actually hold the Output, not merely when it exists.
How it tends to behave: the talent is disciplined by learning and restraint. When this arrangement is in a chart, the first draft of a sharp remark tends to be revised before it is sent; the person who sees what is wrong with an argument also tends to see the history behind it, because the Resource star keeps feeding context. Study, apprenticeship and editing become the natural companions of the wit. This is why the earlier classical texts place this form beside Wealth as one of the two better ways to carry Hurting Officer.
The liability sits on the other side of the same relation. When the Resource is heavy and the Output is light, restraint stops being a filter and becomes a delay: the person tends to edit their own sentence while the moment to speak passes. The correction then arrives in private, in writing, carefully sourced, and sometimes not at all.
3. Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer, Shang Guan Jian Guan 伤官见官
The arrangement: a chart where Hurting Officer and Direct Officer are both present and visible in the year, month or hour stems. It is the visibility that matters: the two stars face each other in the visible layer of the chart. The mechanism is a collision in the control cycle. For a Wood Day Master, the Hurting Officer is Fire and the Direct Officer is Metal, and Fire controls Metal: the star of expression strikes the star of discipline. That is the literal sense of the name.
How it tends to behave: the classical reading is friction with authority, rules and reputation. When this arrangement is in a chart, a person tends to answer a newly announced policy with its flaw in the same meeting, to correct the supervisor in front of the room, to treat a rule as a proposal rather than a command. The asset side is real: this is the mind that spots what a regulation misses, that questions power, that refuses to let a bad instruction pass silently. The cost side is just as real: the structure hears the objection as an attack on itself, and the speaker’s standing in that structure pays for the accuracy. People tend to remember the moment of confrontation longer than they remember who was right.
4. Hurting Officer draining a weak Day Master, Shen Ruo Shang Guan Zhong 身弱伤官重
The arrangement: this one is not about a single neighbour star but about two totals. Add the Output stars — Eating God plus Hurting Officer — and add the support stars — Friend, Rob Wealth, Direct Resource and Indirect Resource. When the Output total is heavy and the support total is thin, the Hurting Officer is doing what this configuration’s name describes: it drains. If you are checking your own chart, the free calculator shows both totals and shows which side is heavier; you do not need to judge your Day Master’s strength by feel.
The mechanism: Output is the element the Day Master spends. Speaking, making and performing all convert part of the Day Master’s element into the produced element. Support is what replenishes the Day Master from behind. Heavy Output with thin Support means the Day Master produces faster than the chart can refill it. Expression costs more than the Day Master can spare.
How it tends to behave: the person still has the Hurting Officer speed and wit; what runs short is the reserve behind the performance. When this configuration is present, a two-hour presentation tends to be followed by an evening with no conversation at all, and a week of constant talking tends to require a silent weekend. The sharpest line of the day can be the last thing the person has to give for a while. The talent is not in doubt. What is short is the recharge, and the concrete pattern is brilliant output that regularly spends tomorrow’s energy today.
A chart with no Hurting Officer at all forms none of the four shapes above. The absence is not a fifth type: the Hurting Officer theme simply is not part of that chart, and the other gods carry how it reads.

Finding your shape takes four steps, and the free calculator does the counting for you.
A Bazi chart has four pillars, one for each of year, month, day and hour. Every pillar has a heavenly stem above and an earthly branch below. The heavenly stem on the day pillar is the Day Master; it is the reference point every star is measured against. The stems on the year, month and hour pillars are the visible stems. Each earthly branch hides one to three stems inside it; those are the hidden stems. Hurting Officer can appear in either place, and so can the neighbouring stars that decide which configuration it forms. The method is easier to compare with Eating God (食神) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Step 1: Find your Day Master
Your Day Master is the heavenly stem written on top of your day pillar. It fixes your element and your polarity, and both go into the pairing below.
Step 2: Read off your Hurting Officer stem
| Day Master | Hurting Officer |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Ding 丁 |
| Yi 乙 | Bing 丙 |
| Bing 丙 | Ji 己 |
| Ding 丁 | Wu 戊 |
| Wu 戊 | Xin 辛 |
| Ji 己 | Geng 庚 |
| Geng 庚 | Gui 癸 |
| Xin 辛 | Ren 壬 |
| Ren 壬 | Yi 乙 |
| Gui 癸 | Jia 甲 |
For example, if your Day Master is Jia, the stem you now search for is Ding. In the three worked charts that follow, the Day Master is Jia in every case, so Ding is the one to look for.
Step 3: Count it in the stems and branches
Search for your Hurting Officer stem in two places.
The three visible stems: year, month, hour. Each visible stem counts as 1.0.
Inside the four earthly branches: each branch holds one to three hidden stems. The branch’s main qi counts as 1.0, a middle qi as 0.5, and a residual qi as 0.3. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest single position in a chart.
Add the weights. The free calculator does this addition; the worked charts below already show the totals.
Step 4: Look at the neighbours
A total by itself does not name the configuration. The neighbours decide that, and the classical texts recognise four shapes only.
- Hurting Officer producing Wealth: a Wealth star is present, so the Output element has somewhere to go.
- Hurting Officer paired with Resource: a Resource star is present and strong enough to control the Hurting Officer.
- Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer: Hurting Officer and Direct Officer are both present and visible; this is the combination the classical texts warn about.
- Hurting Officer draining a weak Day Master: Output is heavy while support for the Day Master is thin.
If no Hurting Officer appears anywhere, none of the four configurations applies. The theme is absent, and the other gods carry the chart.
Whether your own Day Master is strong or weak is reported by the free calculator. Let it make that call; the article does not.
Chart A — the draining shape
Chart A is the shape of configuration 4, Hurting Officer draining a weak Day Master: Output totals 4.0 while support for the Day Master totals 3.0.
Ding, the Hurting Officer, appears in the year stem and the hour stem, 1.0 each, and again as the main qi of the month branch Wu 午, another 1.0. That gives Hurting Officer 3.0. Beside it, the month stem Bing is an Eating God at 1.0, so total Output is 4.0.
What supports the Jia Wood Day Master? Rob Wealth Yi sits inside each of the two Mao 卯 branches, 2.0 in total, and Direct Resource Gui sits inside Zi, 1.0. Support comes to 3.0. Output at 4.0 outweighs support at 3.0, which is exactly the mechanism the fourth configuration describes: expression costs more than the Day Master can spare.
The other shapes do not fit. There is no Direct Officer for the Hurting Officer to strike; the Control total is 0.0. Wealth is only 0.5, too small to receive the Output, and Resource at 1.0 is too thin to pair with the Hurting Officer. The chart has one clear shape, not four candidates.
Chart B — the wealth-producing shape
Chart B is the shape of configuration 1, Hurting Officer producing Wealth: a moderate Hurting Officer at 1.3 stands next to Wealth at 2.0.
Ding appears once in the hour stem, 1.0, and once as a residual stem inside the month branch Xu 戌, 0.3. Hurting Officer totals 1.3. The month stem Bing, an Eating God, adds 1.0 beside it, so Output stands at 2.3. Support for the Day Master is 3.5: Rob Wealth Yi is visible in the year stem and hidden in the hour branch Mao, for 2.0, and Direct Resource Gui appears inside Chou and Zi for 1.5.
Wealth is present in real weight: Direct Wealth Ji is the main qi of Chou at 1.0, and Indirect Wealth Wu is the main qi of Xu at 1.0, for a Wealth total of 2.0. For a Wood Day Master, Wood produces Fire, and Fire produces Earth; the Hurting Officer is Fire and Wealth is Earth. The Output has a route out of the chart and into something productive, which is why the classical texts rate this the most useful form.
A Direct Officer exists in Chart B, but only hidden, at 0.8. Because it does not face the Hurting Officer as a visible stem, the clash of configuration 3 is faint here, not absent — but it is not the shape that defines the chart.
Chart C — no Hurting Officer
Chart C has no Hurting Officer anywhere, visible or hidden, so none of the four configurations is in play.
For a Jia Day Master, the stem to look for is Ding. Chart C shows no Ding in the year, month or hour stems, and no Ding inside any branch. The Output theme is carried instead by an Eating God: Bing is visible in the month stem at 1.0 and hidden as a middle qi inside Yin 寅 at 0.5, for 1.5.
With Hurting Officer absent, the chart is held by other forces. Direct Resource totals 2.5, and same-element support totals 3.0 through Friend and Rob Wealth. The four Hurting-Officer shapes do not arise because their subject is missing.
The difference between the three charts
Running the same four steps over all three charts shows how much the neighbours matter. Chart A and Chart B both have Ding as Hurting Officer, but Chart A gives it 3.0 with Wealth at only 0.5, so Output drains the Day Master. Chart B gives it 1.3 with Wealth at 2.0, so Output becomes income. Chart C removes Ding entirely, leaving no Hurting Officer configuration to name. Same Day Master, same star family; the weights and the neighbouring stars change the reading completely.
These three charts are structural illustrations, not anyone’s fate; they exist only to make the five-element geometry visible. Your own check ends when you can name which shape is in front of you, or say that no Hurting Officer is present — not with a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The star does not change, what you put next to it does.
A Hurting Officer is one element inside a five-element cycle. It does not act alone. Depending on its neighbours, the same star can produce Wealth, be controlled by a Resource, strike a Direct Officer, or drain a Day Master whose support is thin. The four configurations above are four different circuits, so the right practice depends on which circuit you find. Run the chart through the free calculator, check which of the four shapes it forms, and read the matching section. This point connects directly with Indirect Wealth (偏财) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Hurting Officer producing Wealth
If this is the shape your chart forms, the central practice is to not stop at the expression itself. The star that you produce goes on to produce Wealth in the cycle; in ordinary terms, your output needs to become a result that someone can use, and that result should return something to you. Work that suits this shape tends to have a clear deliverable and a clear receiver: a finished piece, a paid performance, a service that ends in an outcome.
Two actions follow. First, decide who the work is for before you begin, and what it replaces. A talk that is only heard is the first link of the chain; a talk that is recorded, handed over, or turned into a plan moves the chain forward. Second, watch what comes back when you produce. If output is steady and nothing returns, the connection between output and Wealth is not closed.
Hurting Officer paired with Resource
If a Resource star is present and strong enough to control the Hurting Officer, expression works best when it passes through a discipline before it appears. The Resource produces the Day Master and controls the output; in daily practice, that is education, method, review, or editing.
Two actions follow. First, put the work through a narrower stage before it faces its real audience: draft it, test it on one person, revise it. Second, keep a source you return to when the expression gets repetitive — a textbook, a score, a folder of past work.
Hurting Officer meeting Direct Officer
If both stars are present and visible, the chart holds a collision: output strikes the star that stands for authority and rules. The practical move is to avoid delivering criticism directly up the chain of command in a live meeting. Choose formats that separate the message from the person: a written note, a scheduled review, a formal complaint route.
Two actions follow. First, write the critique down before saying it aloud; the act of writing forces the message into a form someone can act on without feeling attacked. Second, try to make the critique part of an assignment. When you have been asked to assess a process, pointing out defects is the job; the same words from a subordinate sound like insubordination.
Hurting Officer draining a weak Day Master
If output is heavy and support thin, the cost of expression is the main issue. Support is the set of stars that share the Day Master's element or produce it; where output outweighs them, producing costs more than it refills. In daily terms, visible performance is tiring in this shape, and recoveries are slow.
Two actions follow. First, lower the frequency of live, unrevised output: prepare longer, and show drafts before the finished version. Second, treat rest and practice as part of the work instead of a reward after it. Note that only a full chart shows whether support truly is thin; the free calculator, not this article, should be the place you settle that.
Common misreadings
Three popular claims do not hold up.
- “A person with Hurting Officer is a rebel who cannot hold a job.” The name records a relation between two stars, not a personality type. Friction with authority belongs to the configuration where Hurting Officer meets Direct Officer; where it produces Wealth instead, the output is classically read as turning into income.
- “Hurting Officer is a bad star.” Classical texts treat it as a talented but unruly output star, best used producing Wealth or paired with a Resource. The judgement is about the pairing, not the star alone.
- “No Hurting Officer means no talent or originality.” If no Hurting Officer is present, the theme is absent and other gods carry the chart. The same row of the ten gods includes Eating God, the output star of the same polarity, so expression can still flow; talent is not a count of one star.
Where this stops
This section stops at the boundary of the chart. The Hurting Officer names one star among ten. Whether the Day Master is strong or weak is a whole-chart judgement, shown by the calculator; no single pillar or single star could decide it. The four configurations describe mechanisms — how output interacts with Wealth, Resource, Direct Officer, or a thin support. Those mechanisms suggest tendencies in ordinary situations, not predictions about a life. No star, by itself, determines a job, a relationship, or a fate.
