一What Eating God actually is
Eating God (食神) is the element your Day Master produces with the same polarity: what you make, and what feeds you. Your Day Master (日主) is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, and every ten god is measured from it. Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) and Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真诠) treat Eating God as the gentle output star. The common misreading is that Eating God means an easy life with plenty to eat. That misses the mechanism: the old name says what you produce is what feeds you, and producing takes strength. There are four classical configurations for how that plays out, and after the derivation below, the article shows the exact check you can run on a chart. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Two questions, ten gods
Every ten god comes from two questions, not from a separate list of names. First, how does the stem in question relate to the Day Master? The possible relations are same element, produces me, I produce, I control, and controls me. Second, does that stem have the same polarity as the Day Master, or the opposite polarity? Polarity is the yin/yang side of a stem. Yang stems are Jia 甲, Bing 丙, Wu 戊, Geng 庚, Ren 壬. Yin stems are Yi 乙, Ding 丁, Ji 己, Xin 辛, Gui 癸.
| Relation to the Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Friend | Rob Wealth |
| Produces me | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| I produce | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| I control | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Controls me | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
Eating God sits at the intersection of I produce and same polarity.
The cycles do the actual work. The production cycle is Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood. The control cycle is Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood. The Day Master’s element produces the next element along the production cycle; if that produced stem has the same yin/yang side as the Day Master, it is Eating God.
For example, Jia is Yang Wood. Wood produces Fire, so any Fire stem is something a Jia Day Master produces. Fire has two stems: Bing 丙 is Yang Fire, and Ding 丁 is Yin Fire. Since Jia is Yang, the same-polarity Fire stem is Bing. That makes Bing the Eating God for a Jia Day Master.
The full stem list is below.
| Day Master stem | Eating God stem |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Bing 丙 |
| Yi 乙 | Ding 丁 |
| Bing 丙 | Wu 戊 |
| Ding 丁 | Ji 己 |
| Wu 戊 | Geng 庚 |
| Ji 己 | Xin 辛 |
| Geng 庚 | Ren 壬 |
| Xin 辛 | Gui 癸 |
| Ren 壬 | Jia 甲 |
| Gui 癸 | Yi 乙 |
Why it is called Eating God
The classical name is built on the same image. What you produce is what feeds you: food, craft, ease, and, in the old reading, children. The star therefore stands for output, craft, appetite, ease, and expression without conflict. In a person it leans toward patience, creativity, enjoyment, and a gentle way of getting things done. When nothing receives that output, the same energy turns toward indulgence, dispersal of effort, and a sense of being drained. Those are tendencies, not certainties.
Where Eating God can sit
When you inspect a chart, the day stem is the Day Master itself, so it cannot be its own Eating God. Eating God can appear in the three visible stems of the year, month, or hour. It can also hide inside an earthly branch. Every earthly branch holds one to three hidden stems: a main qi, a middle qi, and a residual qi.
The strongest seat for any god is the main qi of the month branch. After that, position is measured by weight. The weighting this site uses is plain: a visible stem counts 1.0, a hidden main qi counts 1.0, a hidden middle qi counts 0.5, and a hidden residual qi counts 0.3.
A chart with no Eating God anywhere has no Eating God theme. That absence is not one of the four configurations; other gods simply carry the chart.
二The four kinds of Eating God charts
The same star behaves in four different ways depending on what stands next to it.
There is only one Eating God. The four classical configurations do not describe four different stars; they describe the same “I produce” star placed next to four different neighbours. In one chart the neighbour is Wealth and the output becomes income. In another it is Seven Killings and the output becomes a way to handle pressure. In another the weak spot is not a neighbour but the Day Master’s thin support. In the last one an Indirect Resource sits over the Eating God and blocks it. “Present” in the configurations below means the star is visible in a year, month, or hour stem, or hidden inside an earthly branch, where a hidden main qi is as strong as a visible stem and the month branch’s main qi is the strongest position in the chart.
1. Eating God producing Wealth (食神生财)
An Eating God is present, and Wealth is present. Wealth is the element the Day Master controls, split into Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth by polarity. In the production cycle, what you produce goes on to produce what you control. Wood produces Fire, and Fire produces Earth; for a Wood Day Master, Earth is Wealth. So the output is not the end of the line. It feeds a second link, and that link is income, benefit, or use.
The mechanism is a short chain: the Day Master spends energy making the Eating God, and the Eating God then spends its own energy making Wealth. A meal, an article, a piece of furniture, a finished job—each of these is a first-stage product. When Wealth is present, each one can become a second-stage product as well: the meal gets served, the article gets read, the furniture gets used, the job gets paid for.
In behaviour, this shape tends to show as a person who can complete a thing and let it land somewhere outside. The producing is not private. It has a destination. The asset side is that effort accumulates into something receivable. The liability side is that Eating God is also appetite. When the same chain is pushed too hard, the enjoyment of making becomes the anxiety of return, and the appetite for wealth pulls the project away from the craft. Dispersal of effort shows up as many beginnings and few finished pieces, because the return is expected before the output is complete.
2. Eating God controlling Seven Killings (食神制杀)
Here the Eating God is present in the same chart as Seven Killings (Qi Sha 七杀). Seven Killings is the star that controls the Day Master with the same polarity as the Day Master. It is the pressure star. The mechanism is one step in the control cycle: your output is the element that controls the element that controls you. Fire controls Metal, so for a Wood Day Master, Fire output meets Metal pressure. Earth controls Water, so for a Fire Day Master, Earth output meets Water pressure. What the Day Master makes is also what the Day Master uses to discipline what presses on it.
In behaviour, this tends to show when a deadline, a reprimand, a threat, or a sudden demand arrives. Seven Killings pressure would normally hit the Day Master directly, but the Eating God stands between them. The pressure is answered by a completed thing. A person with this shape writes the response, mends the fault, prepares the presentation, performs the task. The asset side is clear: pressure becomes fuel, and the output is often of good quality because it was made under genuine load.
The liability side is in the word “gentle.” Eating God controls by expression, not by confrontation. A person with this shape can spend years producing calmly under a boss or circumstances that keep applying pressure, and does not directly change the relation. The output disarms each new attack, but the attacker is still there. When the Seven Killings is continuous, the Eating God can become a form of avoidance: as long as you are making something, you do not have to address the source of the pressure.
3. Eating God draining a weak Day Master (身弱食神泄气)
This configuration is not identified by a second star. It is identified by the ratio between output and support. Output is heavy, and support for the Day Master is thin. Support is the set of gods that back the Day Master: Friend, Rob Wealth, Direct Resource, and Indirect Resource together. They are the same-element and produces-me relations. When a Day Master has little of those, producing costs more than the Day Master can spare.
The mechanism is the meaning of “I produce.” The Day Master is the source of the output. Every Eating God in the chart is a flow outward from that source. A source with strong support can sustain the flow. A source with thin support cannot. The classical texts read this as talent that tires its owner—not talent that fails, but talent that bills the person who uses it.
In behaviour, this shows in the hour after the work is done. A long teaching session, a heavy piece of writing, a difficult negotiation, a full day of care for someone else—these are done well, and then the person is empty. The tiredness is not the ordinary tiredness of a hard day. It has a flat quality, because the Day Master has spent more energy than came back. The asset side is that the output itself is real; the Drain is not a comment on quality. The liability side is the drain. A chart with this shape tends to recover slowly from its own best work, and can start to avoid producing because of the cost. Whether a Day Master is actually weak is a formal question; the free calculator shows those support totals. It is not settled by how tired you feel after a busy week.
4. Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God (枭神夺食)
This is the configuration classical texts single out to watch. An Indirect Resource sits in the chart with Eating God, and the Indirect Resource is strong. Indirect Resource is the star that produces the Day Master with the same polarity as the Day Master. The relation that matters here is the control cycle: Resource controls Output. Water controls Fire, so for a Jia Wood Day Master, Ren Water Indirect Resource seizes Bing Fire Eating God. The same-polarity Resource is the one that takes the Eating God.
The mechanism is a blocked outlet. Eating God is what the Day Master produces and releases into the world. When the Indirect Resource controls it, the release is interrupted at the level of the element, not the intention. In behavior this tends to show as interruption near the end of a piece of work. A project is shelved one step before completion. A meal is made but the appetite is gone before it is served. A message is drafted and not sent. The failure point is not the start and not the skill; it is the final stage, where the output would leave the maker’s hands.
The asset side is that the Eating God itself has not vanished. The desire to make and the capacity to make are still in the chart. The liability side is that the output is stopped before it can land. A person with this shape can begin many things, do most of them well, and still have little to show, because the blocking star arrives at the moment of delivery. Classical sources name the Indirect Resource as what harms the Eating God; once that name is on the table, the pattern becomes visible enough to examine.
A chart with no Eating God at all is not one of the four configurations. The theme is absent, and other gods carry the chart.

Finding your Eating God takes four steps, and the free calculator does the counting for you.
Step one is locating your Day Master: the heavenly stem of the day you were born, already labelled in the chart. Step two is reading your Eating God stem off the pairing. For a Jia 甲 Day Master the Eating God is Bing 丙; for Yi 乙 it is Ding 丁; for Bing 丙 it is Wu 戊; for Ding 丁 it is Ji 己; for Wu 戊 it is Geng 庚; for Ji 己 it is Xin 辛; for Geng 庚 it is Ren 壬; for Xin 辛 it is Gui 癸; for Ren 壬 it is Jia 甲; for Gui 癸 it is Yi 乙. Wherever one of those stems appears in your chart, that is your Eating God. The method is easier to compare with Rob Wealth (劫财) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Step three is counting where it sits. The Eating God can be visible in any of the three non-day stems — year, month, or hour — or hidden inside an earthly branch. Every branch holds one to three hidden stems: a main qi, a middle qi, and a residual qi. The calculator weighs a visible stem at 1.0, a hidden main qi at 1.0, a hidden middle qi at 0.5, and a hidden residual qi at 0.3. Check the month branch first, because the month branch's main qi is the strongest position in the chart. The calculator does the addition; what matters is the total it reports.
Step four is looking at what stands beside the Eating God. Use the group names from the chart totals. Support for the Day Master means Friend plus Rob Wealth plus Direct Resource plus Indirect Resource. Output means Eating God plus Hurting Officer. Wealth means Direct Wealth plus Indirect Wealth. Control means Direct Officer plus Seven Killings. Then run four comparisons, matching against the four configurations described above:
- If Wealth is present along with the Eating God, compare the chart with Eating God producing Wealth.
- If a Seven Killings is present, compare the chart with Eating God controlling Seven Killings.
- If the calculator reports thin support for the Day Master and a heavy Output, compare the chart with Eating God draining a weak Day Master.
- If an Indirect Resource is present and strong, compare the chart with Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God.
If step three found no Eating God at all, the comparison stops there. No Eating God means no Eating God configuration, and the rest of the chart does the work.
Chart A
Chart A is a strong Eating God without a job.
Its Day Master is Jia Wood, so its Eating God is Bing Fire. Bing appears in the year stem and the hour stem, two visible stems at 1.0 each, and there is a middle-qi Bing inside each of the two Yin 寅 branches, two hidden stems at 0.5 each. The Eating God total is 3.0, the heaviest weighted total in the chart. The Day Master is supported: Friend 2.0, Rob Wealth 1.0, Direct Resource 1.0, a support total of 4.0. That rules out configuration 3, because the output is carried rather than draining. What the chart lacks is a destination for the output. The Wealth this Eating God could produce totals only 0.6 — one hidden Wu Earth 戊 inside each Yin branch. That is too thin to receive the output, so the chart sits closest to configuration 1 with the Wealth side missing. The other use the classical texts give it is missing too: there is no Seven Killings for the output to control. The only Control in the chart is a Direct Officer at 1.0, the visible Xin 辛 in the month stem, and configuration 2 names Seven Killings, not Direct Officer. There is no Indirect Resource either, so nothing seizes the Eating God. This is Eating God present in strength but not completing a classical configuration.
Chart B
Chart B is Eating God producing Wealth in modest proportion.
Its Day Master is Jia Wood as well, so its Eating God is again Bing Fire. Bing appears in the month stem, a visible stem at 1.0, and as a middle-qi Bing inside the month branch's Yin 寅, at 0.5. The Eating God total is 1.5. The Day Master is well supported: Direct Resource 2.5, Friend 2.0, Rob Wealth 1.0, so the Day Master can spare what the Eating God spends. Wealth is there to receive it: Direct Wealth 1.0 from the Ji Earth 己 hidden in the hour branch's Chou 丑, and Indirect Wealth 0.3 from the Wu Earth 戊 hidden in Yin. In production-cycle order the chain closes: Wood produces Fire, and Fire produces Earth. This is configuration 1 in modest proportion — output the Day Master can afford, flowing toward Wealth that is there to receive it.
Chart C
Chart C has no Eating God anywhere, so none of the four configurations applies.
For a Jia Wood Day Master, the Eating God would still be Bing Fire. Scan the visible stems: Jia 甲 in the year, Ding 丁 in the month, Yi 乙 in the hour — no Bing. Scan the hidden stems: the two Zi 子 branches hold Gui 癸 Direct Resource; the Mao 卯 branch holds Yi 乙 Rob Wealth; the Chou 丑 branch holds Ji 己 Direct Wealth, Gui 癸 Direct Resource, and Xin 辛 Direct Officer — still no Bing. Eating God is simply absent. The output theme is carried by the Hurting Officer instead, the opposite-polarity “I produce” star, as Ding in the month stem at 1.0. An absent Eating God is not one of the four configurations; the chart is held by Direct Resource at 2.5 and same-element support — Friend 1.0 plus Rob Wealth 2.0, totalling 3.0 — while the Hurting Officer does the output work.
The three charts are the same check run three times. Chart A and Chart B both contain Eating God, and both sit closest to configuration 1, but only Chart B completes it: A has 3.0 of Eating God against 0.6 of Wealth, while B has 1.5 of Eating God against Direct Wealth 1.0 and Indirect Wealth 0.3. Chart C has no Eating God at all, so its output theme runs through Hurting Officer instead. Same Day Master, same Eating God stem — what differs is the neighbours and the support the chart reports.
These three charts are structural illustrations, not anyone's fate. Your own check ends at which shape, if any, the neighbours and the support totals describe, not at a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The star does not change; what you put next to it does. Eating God is a relation, not a personality. The same “I produce” stem behaves one way beside Wealth, another beside Seven Killings, another when the Day Master is running thin, and another when an Indirect Resource sits over it. So the practical question is not “Do I have Eating God?” but “What is my Eating God tied to?” This point connects directly with Hurting Officer (伤官) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
1. Eating God producing Wealth
This shape has a full chain: what you make can be exchanged. Output does not sit; it moves on to the next link. The work habit this shape rewards is closure.
- Finish one thing before starting another. A half-made article, meal, or tool has not produced Wealth yet.
- Put completed work where someone can use it: submit it, deliver it, show it, hand it over.
- Keep a regular output rhythm. Small finished pieces train the output to reach the second link.
This shape tends to punish producing for its own sake. Output that stays in the drawer leaves the configuration half built.
2. Eating God controlling Seven Killings
Seven Killings is the pressure star. Eating God controls it by giving the pressure something to work on.
- When pressure rises, make something on paper first: a plan, a draft, a rehearsal. Then the pressure has a concrete object to be applied to.
- Choose output with a standard. Practice that is judged — a piece performed, a test run, a written page — turns pressure into disciplined work.
- Meet high-stakes situations with preparation that is output, not worry.
This shape tends to punish avoidance. Avoiding the pressure does not remove it; it leaves both the pressure and the craft unused.
3. Eating God draining a weak Day Master
When output is heavy and the support under the Day Master is thin, producing costs more than the chart can spare. That is an accounting statement, not a verdict on talent. The work habits that protect this shape are boundary habits.
- Produce in short sessions and stop before you are empty. Rest is part of the method.
- Keep only a small number of outputs alive. Several half-started outputs cost more than one finished one.
- Protect recovery time: food, rest, and the people or study that refill you before the next session.
This shape tends to punish output done to prove something. It rewards output done at a pace the chart can actually fund.
4. Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God
An Indirect Resource controls output in the production cycle, and the classical texts name it as the thing that harms Eating God. When the blocking star is present and strong, the output is stopped before it leaves. The fix is to protect the boundary between input and output.
- Do the output before the research or the plan. Since the blocker is a Resource star, extra input makes the blockage stronger.
- Put output time in the schedule and leave it alone when a new idea appears.
- Learn to spot the pattern of “one more book, one more course, one more idea before I start.” That is the Resource side taking the lead. Start with a small output instead.
This shape tends to reward schedules that defend actual making time from further study.
Common misreadings
Three sayings about Eating God do not hold.
- “Eating God means an easy life with plenty to eat.” It means what you produce feeds you. Producing costs strength, and when support is thin, the same configuration reads as being drained, not fed.
- “Eating God brings creativity.” It names a tendency: output, craft, expression. But the output can be blocked by an Indirect Resource or tired by lack of support. A blocked Eating God is not a creative force by itself.
- “More Eating God means more creativity.” Heavy output needs support behind it. An Eating God that is large and unconnected is output looking for a job, not a stronger talent.
Where this stops
One star does not decide a chart. Eating God is measured from the Day Master, but the Day Master’s strength is measured by the whole group around it: support, output, wealth, and control. The free calculator shows those group totals, and those totals are what you can check a chart against.
None of this predicts events. Eating God describes a structural tendency: output tends toward exchange, discipline, exhaustion, or blockage depending on what stands next to it. The rest of the chart — and the choices made against that structure — carry the outcome.
