一What Indirect Resource actually is
Indirect Resource (Pian Yin, 偏印) is the element that produces the Day Master and carries the same polarity — the indirect member of the two stars Bazi calls Resource. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) and Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真诠) read this star in two directions: it supports a weak Day Master, and when unrestrained it behaves as the Owl (Xiao Shen, 枭神) that seizes the Eating God. The common misreading is a slogan: “Indirect Resource means a cold mother and a lonely mind.” That treats a tendency as a fixed personality. In practice the same star can support, attack, be controlled by Wealth, or pile up on a Day Master with a thin outlet. Those are the four classical configurations, and the rest of this article gives the checks for telling one from another.
Two questions make the ten gods
The ten gods are not mystical labels. Every stem in a chart is read through two questions:
- What does this stem do to the Day Master? It is the same element, it produces the Day Master, the Day Master produces it, the Day Master controls it, or it controls the Day Master.
- Does it share the Day Master’s polarity or oppose it? Same polarity means both are yang or both are yin.
Those two questions create the full ten-god grid:
| Relation to the Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Friend | Rob Wealth |
| Produces me | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| I produce | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| I control | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Controls me | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
The row that matters here is “produces me.” Resource stars feed you. Their element generates the Day Master’s element through the production cycle: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood. If your Day Master is Fire, Wood is the producing element. If your Day Master is Metal, Earth is the producing element.
The Resource row splits by polarity. Opposite polarity is Direct Resource; same polarity is Indirect Resource. Resource is what feeds you, and the same-polarity kind is indirect. The old reading files it as the stepmother rather than the mother: it raises you, but from a different position. In the classical frame it also carries a sharper name, Xiao Shen, the Owl, because of what it does to the Eating God when it is not restrained.
The Indirect Resource stem for each Day Master
The exact pairings are fixed. Each Day Master has one Indirect Resource stem:
| Day Master | Indirect Resource stem |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Ren 壬 |
| Yi 乙 | Gui 癸 |
| Bing 丙 | Jia 甲 |
| Ding 丁 | Yi 乙 |
| Wu 戊 | Bing 丙 |
| Ji 己 | Ding 丁 |
| Geng 庚 | Wu 戊 |
| Xin 辛 | Ji 己 |
| Ren 壬 | Geng 庚 |
| Gui 癸 | Xin 辛 |
You can reproduce the logic by hand. Take Jia Wood: the element that produces Wood is Water, and Jia is a Yang Wood stem. Of the two Water stems, Ren is the Yang Water stem, so Ren is Jia’s Indirect Resource. The same pattern runs through the whole table.
Where Indirect Resource can sit in a chart
Indirect Resource can appear in one of the three visible stems above the year, month, or hour pillar. It can also sit hidden inside an earthly branch. Each branch holds one to three hidden stems — main qi, middle qi, and residual qi — so a Resource hidden as the main qi or as a lesser qi inside a branch still counts. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest seat in the chart, so a Resource sitting there matters more than the same character placed in a weaker position.
To find whether the star is present, take your Day Master from the table above, then scan the other three visible stems and the hidden stems of each branch for that one character. If it is absent from both places, the Indirect Resource theme is not in that chart, and the other ten gods carry the reading.
二The four kinds of Indirect Resource charts
An Indirect Resource does not act alone. It is the element that produces the Day Master, but every neighbour in the five-element cycle either feeds it, restrains it, or is restrained by it. Which neighbour is strong enough decides what the Indirect Resource does. Classical Bazi sorts the possibilities into four configurations, listed here in their traditional order.
| Configuration | The structural check | Classical reading |
|---|---|---|
| Supporting a weak Day Master | Support thin; Indirect Resource present and feeding | Help arrives by unusual routes |
| Seizing the Eating God | Eating God present; Indirect Resource strong | Resource controls Output; the Owl seizes |
| Wealth controlling the Indirect Resource | Wealth present and strong enough | Intuition disciplined by the practical |
| Heavy Resource on a strong Day Master | Support dominates; Output and Wealth thin | Withdrawal and inertia |
The four names are shapes, not verdicts. Use the free calculator on this page to see the weighted totals; it shows the same numbers this article describes.
1. Indirect Resource supporting a weak Day Master (身弱得印)
A chart in this configuration has thin support for the Day Master, with few Friends or Rob Wealth in the stems and branches, while an Indirect Resource is present. Support here means the Friend, Rob Wealth, Direct Resource, and Indirect Resource stars counted together. Resource is what feeds the Day Master, so the producing relation acts as a lifeline: with little same-element help around, any resource that arrives matters more.
Classical texts Di Tian Sui and Zi Ping Zhen Quan treat the Indirect Resource as useful in exactly this situation, help that arrives by unusual routes. When conventional support runs out, this kind of chart tends to find what it needs through a back door: a skill learned alone, a mentor reached through an indirect contact, a subject mastered because a problem demanded it rather than because a school offered it. Self-teaching is the natural mode, and the depth it produces is real.
The liability is carried by the word indirect. Because support comes from a source that is not a same-element ally, this shape tends to distrust the help when it arrives. When a back-channel opportunity appears, the chart tends to spend its energy preparing for the chance to disappear instead of using it, and the self-taught depth that saved one situation can harden into isolation in the next.
2. Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God (枭神夺食)
In this configuration the chart contains an Eating God, the Day Master’s same-polarity output, and an Indirect Resource strong enough to dominate it. Resource controls Output in the five-element cycle, and same polarity strikes same polarity. For a Jia Wood Day Master, the Water Indirect Resource douses the Fire Eating God. Classical texts give this shape its harsh name — the Owl — because the star that feeds the Day Master seizes the Day Master’s outlet.
The weight matters. When the Eating God and the Indirect Resource are close in strength, the seizure is possible but not decided. When the Indirect Resource clearly outweighs the Eating God, the gentle outlet is blocked.
The behaviour follows the mechanism. When the moment arrives to send finished work out, this shape tends to hold it back for one more revision, wait for the conditions to feel safe, or decide the audience is wrong. The material is not missing; the depth of the Indirect Resource is still present. What gets blocked is the exit. If nothing external forces the release, a person with this chart can stay in a long private loop, and the suspicion that grows in that loop makes the next release harder. Originality remains, but it rarely reaches the outside undisturbed.
3. Wealth controlling the Indirect Resource (财制偏印)
Wealth means what the Day Master controls: Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth together. When a Wealth star is present and strong enough to restrain the Indirect Resource, the control cycle does the work, because Wealth controls Resource in the cycle. For a Jia Wood Day Master, Earth Wealth restrains Water Resource, and the unconventional, intuition-driven Indirect Resource becomes answerable to a practical star. Classical texts prescribe this arrangement as the control for the Owl and rate it the best-behaved of the four forms.
Intuition is disciplined by the practical. When a decision carries a real cost, this kind of chart tends to keep the unusual insight but test it against the budget before acting. In a working setting, the pattern shows up as a specialised, self-taught skill applied to a concrete problem that has to be solved for real use, the unconventional thinking filtered through what the situation will bear.
The liability is on the other side of the same filter. When a piece of learning has no immediate use, this shape tends to set it aside, and after years of practical choices the uncommon angle that made the person original can be pruned down to whatever the market already accepts. The Indirect Resource stays disciplined, but discipline can also silence the part of it that saw the unusual route in the first place.
4. Heavy Resource on a strong Day Master with no outlet (印重身旺)
In this arrangement, the Indirect Resource and the rest of the support stars dominate the weighted totals, while Output and Wealth are thin. The Day Master has plenty coming in and very little to send out. Output is what the Day Master produces and releases; Wealth is what it controls and manages. With both thin, all the incoming Resource accumulates. The Day Master is over-fed and has nowhere to send it, and classical texts read this as withdrawal and inertia.
This kind of chart can stay in one subject for a long time and develop genuine specialised depth; the attention span is real. But when no deadline exists, it tends to keep preparing: collect one more source, refine one more plan, wait until the idea feels fully shaped. The preparation quietly replaces the delivery. When a deadline or an external demand forces an exit, the reserve becomes visible and the work can come out. Without that external push, the shape tends to stay in study mode, and prolonged solitude makes it harder for outside feedback to end the loop.
A chart with no Indirect Resource at all is an absence, not a fifth configuration. No Owl is at work, the Resource role falls to Direct Resource if it is played at all, and the rest of the ten gods carry the chart.
三How to tell which kind you have
庚 Seven Killings
戊 Indirect Wealth
壬 Indirect Resource
戊 Indirect Wealth
壬 Indirect Resource
戊 Indirect Wealth
Weighted totals: Indirect Resource 3.0, Seven Killings 2.5, Eating God 1.0, Direct Wealth 1.0, Direct Resource 1.0, Indirect Wealth 0.9
丙 Eating God
戊 Indirect Wealth
壬 Indirect Resource
戊 Indirect Wealth
Weighted totals: Friend 2.0, Direct Resource 2.0, Eating God 1.5, Indirect Resource 1.5, Seven Killings 1.0, Indirect Wealth 0.6
丙 Eating God
戊 Indirect Wealth
癸 Direct Resource
辛 Direct Officer
Weighted totals: Direct Resource 2.5, Friend 2.0, Eating God 1.5, Rob Wealth 1.0, Direct Wealth 1.0, Indirect Wealth 0.3, Direct Officer 0.3
Checking for Indirect Resource is a four-step count, and the free calculator on this page does the arithmetic. The method is easier to compare with Direct Officer (正官) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
The charts above include the same weighted totals this check uses. The question is not about personality; it is structural. First you place the Indirect Resource in the chart, then you compare its weight with Eating God, Wealth, and the Day Master’s support.
The four-step check
- Find your Day Master stem. The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar, and every other stem is read in relation to it. If you are not sure which stem it is, the chart table marks it.
- Read off the Indirect Resource stem from the pairing. The Indirect Resource is the element that produces the Day Master and shares its polarity. These pairings are fixed:
| Day Master | Indirect Resource | Day Master | Indirect Resource |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia | Ren | Ji | Ding |
| Yi | Gui | Geng | Wu |
| Bing | Jia | Xin | Ji |
| Ding | Yi | Ren | Geng |
| Wu | Bing | Gui | Xin |
- Count that stem in the chart. Look first at the three visible stems other than the Day Master: year, month, and hour. Then look inside the four branches. Each branch holds one to three hidden stems: the main qi, the middle qi, and the residual qi. In the weighted totals, a visible stem counts 1.0, a hidden main qi counts 1.0, a hidden middle qi counts 0.5, and a hidden residual qi counts 0.3. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest position in the chart, and the free calculator already includes that weighting.
- Look at what stands beside it. The four classical configurations are named by the neighbours around the Indirect Resource. Support means Friend plus Rob Wealth plus Direct Resource plus Indirect Resource. Output means Eating God plus Hurting Officer. Wealth means Direct Wealth plus Indirect Wealth. The comparisons are:
- If support is thin and an Indirect Resource is feeding the Day Master, that is the shape of Indirect Resource supporting a weak Day Master.
- If an Eating God is present and the Indirect Resource is the stronger number, that is the shape of Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God.
- If Wealth is present and strong enough to restrain the Indirect Resource, that is the shape of Wealth controlling the Indirect Resource.
- If support dominates while Output and Wealth are thin, that is the shape of heavy Resource on a strong Day Master.
- If the chart has no Indirect Resource at all, none of the four configurations applies.
The free calculator reports whether your Day Master is strong or weak; this article does not decide that for you. The four checks are tendencies of structure, not verdicts.
Chart A: the Owl is sitting over the Eating God
Chart A has no Friends or Rob Wealth, so its only support is Resource, and the Indirect Resource is three times heavier than the Eating God.
For a Jia Wood Day Master, the Indirect Resource stem is Ren. Ren appears in the month stem and the hour stem, and a middle-qi Ren sits inside each of the two Shen branches. That gives an Indirect Resource total of 3.0. Beside it, the direct Resource Gui sits in the Zi branch, adding 1.0. With no Friend or Rob Wealth anywhere, the Day Master’s total support of 4.0 is entirely Resource.
The Seven Killings total is 2.5. Seven Killings is metal, and metal produces water, so it feeds the Ren Indirect Resource rather than restraining it.
The Eating God is Bing, the main qi of the Si branch, at 1.0. It stands under an Indirect Resource three times its weight. That is the structural shape of configuration 2: the Owl over the Eating God. Wealth is present at 1.9, but a Wealth total of 1.9 is too thin to hold back a Resource family of 4.0, so configuration 3 does not control this chart.
Chart B: heavy support with a thin outlet
Chart B has a moderate Indirect Resource, but support dominates the chart while Output and Wealth are thin, which is the shape of the heavy-Resource configuration.
The Day Master is Jia again, so the Indirect Resource stem is still Ren. Chart B has Ren in the hour stem, counting 1.0, and one middle-qi Ren inside the Shen branch, counting 0.5. Its Indirect Resource total is therefore 1.5, not the 3.0 seen in Chart A.
The direct Resource Gui appears twice, once in each Zi branch, giving Direct Resource 2.0. Friend also totals 2.0. Together, support for the Day Master is 5.5: Friend 2.0, Direct Resource 2.0, and Indirect Resource 1.5. Output is only 1.5, and Wealth is only 0.6.
That is configuration 4 in its classical shape: support is dominant, output is thin, and the overfed Day Master has nowhere to send its energy. The Indirect Resource and the Eating God are evenly matched at 1.5 each, so the seizing shape from Chart A is not forced by weight here. It remains an open question, not a settled one.
Chart C: no Indirect Resource at all
Chart C contains no Ren in any visible or hidden stem, so none of the four Indirect Resource configurations applies.
The Day Master is Jia Wood once more. For Jia, the Indirect Resource stem would be Ren, and there is no Ren among the three visible stems: the year stem is Jia, the month stem is Bing, and the hour stem is Yi. There is also no Ren inside any of the four branches. The Resource theme in this chart is carried entirely by the direct Resource Gui, which totals 2.5.
Same-element support does the main work here: Friend totals 2.0 and Rob Wealth totals 1.0, for 3.0 of same-element support. The Eating God totals 1.5 and acts as that support’s outlet. Because the Indirect Resource count is zero, the four configurations above have no hook to attach to.
Read the three charts together. Chart A is the Owl over the Eating God. Chart B is the same Day Master with a moderate Indirect Resource inside a support-heavy chart. Chart C removes the Indirect Resource entirely, leaving Direct Resource to carry the Resource theme.
These three are structural illustrations, not anyone’s fate. Your own check ends at “which shape,” not at a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The star does not change; what you put next to it does.
The Indirect Resource is a structural relation, not a personality type. The useful question is not “what kind of person am I?” but “what shape is this relation in?” The free calculator on this page has already added the visible and hidden stems into weighted totals. When those totals align with one of the four configurations below, act on the shape: strengthen what the Resource feeds, protect what it attacks, allow what controls it, and spend what has become surplus. This point connects directly with Direct Resource (正印) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Indirect Resource supporting a weak Day Master
When the support totals are thin and an Indirect Resource is the element producing the Day Master, the classical reading is help that arrives by unusual routes. The workable rules:
- Study through the side door: a narrow specialism, a self-taught skill, a teacher from an unrelated industry. Unconventional learning is the native channel for this star.
- Protect long, unbroken blocks of attention. The Resource works by slow absorption; interruptions turn that absorption into scattered reading.
- Ask someone outside your immediate field before you ask the expected authority. The shape tends to produce help precisely where the obvious route is blocked.
Indirect Resource seizing the Eating God
When an Eating God is present and an Indirect Resource sits over it, Resource controls Output and the gentle outlet is blocked. Output is not absent; it is under attack:
- Prepare material before it becomes public. A draft, a sketch, or a prototype is in a far better position than a blank page and an audience.
- Keep releases small and regular. A single high-stakes presentation carries the whole weight of the blocked output; a smaller finished piece tends to find its way through.
- Do not read a stalled moment as a lack of ideas. The block sits in the relation between two stars; changing the size and timing of the output changes what that relation does.
Wealth controlling the Indirect Resource
Wealth controls Resource in the five-element cycle. When Wealth is present and strong enough to perform that control, intuition is disciplined by the practical, and classical texts read this as the best-behaved form of the star.
- Attach a concrete frame before you start: a budget, a deadline, a named audience for the result.
- Work with a collaborator who supplies the schedule and the external checks while you supply the method. The split tends to reward both sides.
- Test the insight with the smallest concrete version of it first. A cheap prototype or a one-page brief lets the practical check do its work before resources are committed.
Heavy Resource on a strong Day Master with no outlet
In this configuration, Resource and support dominate while Output and Wealth are thin. The Day Master has more fuel than it can spend, and the classical reading is withdrawal and inertia.
- Stop adding input for a defined period. Finish one existing piece of work before starting the next course, and close a subject by making something with it.
- Choose tasks with visible completion: a written piece, a built object, a settled arrangement. The work needs an end it can see.
- Put a date on it and tell someone else. An open schedule gives this shape room to drift; a bounded appointment tends to convert the stored Resource into finished output.
Common misreadings
“Indirect Resource means a cold mother and a lonely mind.” The old reading names a stepmother, which is a role in the ten-god system, not a verdict on anyone’s mother. The same star that carries that image is the one classical texts rely on when the Day Master is thin. The role changes with the configuration.
“A person with Indirect Resource is a loner.” Solitude is one tendency the star can show, but so are intuition and original thought. What appears in daily behaviour depends on what stands beside the star: under Wealth, the same Indirect Resource works cleanly in collaboration; unmanaged, it tends to withdraw. A blanket label erases that difference.
“Indirect Resource is an unlucky star.” Ten gods are not omens. Classical texts read the same relation as useful to a weak Day Master, as the Owl when it seizes the Eating God, and as well behaved when Wealth controls it. The configuration carries the reading, not the star alone.
Where this stops
The Indirect Resource does not decide anything by itself. The chart is one structure, and no single god carries its meaning. A chart with no Indirect Resource at all is not a configuration; the theme is absent, and other gods carry the chart. Whether a Day Master is strong or weak is the calculator’s job, because it is a whole-chart judgment; this article’s job stops at describing the mechanism. No death, illness, divorce, bankruptcy, or wealth can be read from one star. Read the totals, identify the shape, then choose the work, pace, and boundaries that fit it.
