Direct Resource (正印) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart

一What Direct Resource actually is

Direct Resource, Zheng Yin 正印, is the element that produces your Day Master, from the opposite polarity. Your Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, and the other stems of the chart are read as relations to it. Di Tian Sui 滴天髓 and Zi Ping Zhen Quan 子平真诠 are the two classical manuals behind this framework; they treat Direct Resource as the protective star, best paired with Direct Officer, and name Wealth as what damages it. The popular reading — “Direct Resource means a good mother and an easy education, so nothing else needs checking” — mistakes a relation for a verdict. A feeding star has a second side: unmanaged, it tends toward passivity, dependence, and thinking in place of doing. Which side shows is set by what surrounds the Resource, and classical practice organizes that into exactly four configurations. The rest of this article walks you through those four and gives you the checks to tell which one is in your chart. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.

How the ten gods are built

The ten gods are not ten separate entities to memorize. Each is a label produced by two questions about the Day Master:

  • What does the other element do to the Day Master? It can be the same element, produce me, be produced by me, be controlled by me, or control me.
  • Does it share the Day Master’s polarity, or the opposite? Polarity means yin or yang.
What it does to the Day Master Same polarity Opposite polarity
Same element Friend Rob Wealth
I produce it Eating God Hurting Officer
I control it Indirect Wealth Direct Wealth
It controls me Seven Killings Direct Officer
It produces me Indirect Resource Direct Resource

Direct Resource is the last row, second column: “It produces me” plus “opposite polarity.” That is the whole definition. Every time you see the term, you are looking at a specific stem that feeds the Day Master from the opposite yin/yang side.

Working out your own Direct Resource

You can derive your Direct Resource without memorizing a list.

First, find the element that produces yours. Read the production cycle backward: Wood produces Fire, Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood. So a Wood Day Master is produced by Water, a Fire Day Master by Wood, an Earth Day Master by Fire, a Metal Day Master by Earth, and a Water Day Master by Metal.

Second, apply the polarity. The Yang stems are Jia 甲, Bing 丙, Wu 戊, Geng 庚, Ren 壬. The Yin stems are Yi 乙, Ding 丁, Ji 己, Xin 辛, Gui 癸. A Yang Day Master takes the Yin stem of its producing element, and a Yin Day Master takes the Yang stem.

Example: Jia 甲 is Yang Wood. Water produces Wood. Water has two stems, Ren 壬 (Yang) and Gui 癸 (Yin). Jia needs the opposite polarity, so Jia’s Direct Resource is Gui 癸.

Day Master Direct Resource
Jia 甲 Gui 癸
Yi 乙 Ren 壬
Bing 丙 Yi 乙
Ding 丁 Jia 甲
Wu 戊 Ding 丁
Ji 己 Bing 丙
Geng 庚 Ji 己
Xin 辛 Wu 戊
Ren 壬 Xin 辛
Gui 癸 Geng 庚

Why it is called Resource

Resource is what feeds you. In the five-element cycle, the element that produces the Day Master is the feeding element, and the old reading gave that role a human face: the mother. From the mother-image come formal learning, protection, and the seal of office — yin 印 means seal, the stamp that gives a person standing and credentials. The opposite-polarity kind of the producer is the direct kind, Direct Resource.

In a person, this star leans toward kindness, thoughtfulness, and a long view. Unmanaged, it leans the other way: passivity, dependence, and thinking in place of doing. These are leanings, not verdicts.

Where Direct Resource appears in a chart

Every pillar has a stem on top and a branch underneath. Direct Resource can sit in either layer.

  • Visible stems. The year, month, and hour pillars each have a visible stem. The fourth visible stem, the day stem, is the Day Master itself, so it cannot also be the Resource.
  • Hidden stems. Each earthly branch stores one to three hidden stems, ranked as main qi, middle qi, and residual qi. If one of those hidden stems matches your Direct Resource, the star is present even though no one can see it at the top of the pillar.

The free calculator on this page counts all of these positions: visible stems and hidden main qi each count 1.0, middle qi 0.5, and residual qi 0.3. The strongest seat in a chart is the month branch’s main qi. If your Direct Resource is there, the Resource theme is the dominant one to read.

If no Direct Resource appears in any of these positions, the star is simply absent. That absence is not one of the four classical configurations; the other gods carry the chart instead.

二The four kinds of Direct Resource charts

The same star behaves in four different ways depending on what stands next to it. Direct Resource produces the Day Master as its defining action, but the producing relation alone does not say what it will do in a life. Classical practice organizes the star into four configurations, each driven by a different neighbour and a different produce/control mechanism.

1. Officer and Resource producing each other (官印相生)

This arrangement requires a Direct Officer and a Direct Resource in the same chart. The Direct Officer is the star that controls the Day Master from the opposite polarity. In the production cycle, the element of the Officer produces the element of the Resource. With a Wood Day Master, for example, the Direct Officer’s element is Metal, the Direct Resource is Gui Water, and Metal produces Water. Then the Water produces the Wood Day Master. The relation runs in one line: the Officer produces the Resource, the Resource produces the Day Master. Rule feeds learning, and learning feeds the self.

This is the pattern classical texts rate the most orderly form. In behaviour, it tends to show wherever advancement is rule-governed: a school with a syllabus, a civil service with examinations, a profession with licensing. The study that an external system requires becomes genuinely useful knowledge rather than a chore, and that knowledge then feeds the person’s own standing. The asset side is the ability to stay inside a structured system for years and turn its requirements into competence.

The liability sits in the same line. Because the chain starts with the Officer, the learning is set in motion by what is required. When the requirement disappears — the exam ends, the posting finishes, the course closes — this kind of chart tends to mark time. It was told what to learn for so long that it waits for the next instruction before choosing one on its own.

2. Direct Resource supporting a weak Day Master (身弱印生身)

In this arrangement, support for the Day Master is thin. Support means Friend plus Rob Wealth plus Direct Resource plus Indirect Resource — the stars whose element matches the Day Master or produces it. When that column is thin, the Day Master has little of its own element to stand on, and a Direct Resource is the main thing feeding it.

The mechanism is the production cycle operating as a lifeline. The Resource produces the Day Master’s element, and because few friend stars are around, every bit of that production matters. Classical sources read this shape as protection and learning carrying the person, and that is how it tends to behave. A difficult stretch is survived by going back into formal training; a confusing period is handled by taking a mentor, joining a protected institution, or adding a credential. The education is not decoration. It is the load-bearing support.

The liability is that the Day Master gets used to being carried. This kind of chart tends to stay in preparation longer than preparation requires — another degree instead of the first job, another supervised project instead of an independent one. The person keeps the lifeline close because letting go of it feels like losing their footing. The dependence is the shadow side of the protection.

3. Wealth damaging the Resource (财星坏印)

Here a Wealth star sits present and strong beside a Direct Resource. Wealth means the element the Day Master controls, in both its forms: Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth. The control cycle supplies the mechanism. For a Wood Day Master, Wealth is Earth, Resource is Water, and Wood controls Earth while Earth controls Water. The element the person is best at managing is exactly the element that attacks the element feeding them.

When that happens, the practical crowds out the protective. Classical texts warn about this configuration specifically when the Day Master needs the Resource. In that situation, the study track tends to get interrupted by the paying offer; the research project gets shelved when a transaction needs handling; the protected arrangement gets traded for a better-paying one that offers no protection. The thing that carries the person is damaged by the thing the person controls.

The asset side appears when the Day Master does not need the Resource. A strong Day Master tolerates the crowding. In that case, this chart tends to treat education as an instrument: learn what is needed, apply it directly to earning, and do not romanticize study. The Resource is reduced but still supplies a working layer of training beneath the practical activity.

4. Heavy Resource on a strong Day Master with no outlet (印重身旺)

In this arrangement, Direct Resource and support dominate, while Output and Wealth are thin. Output means the stars the Day Master produces: Eating God and Hurting Officer. Wealth means the stars the Day Master controls. The Day Master is rated strong — the free calculator on this page shows that weighting — and the Resource keeps producing it anyway. With Output thin, the energy the Day Master generates has no ordinary route out of the system. With Wealth thin, there is little scope to spend that energy on what it controls. Overfeeding continues, and nothing vents.

That is why classical texts read this shape as dependence and inertia. The tendencies are specific. This kind of chart tends to prepare instead of perform: before the essay, another book; before the project, another course; before the product, another year of research. The person has been fed so consistently — by parents, institutions, or credentials — that action starts to feel unnecessary. Thinking becomes a substitute for doing.

The asset side is the depth the long feeding leaves behind. This chart can absorb and retain material over long stretches. When the situation genuinely requires mastery before output — an advanced examination, a research qualification, a technical brief that allows no shortcuts — the person arrives unusually well supplied. The difficulty is not in taking material in. It is in sending anything out.

A chart with no Direct Resource at all is not a configuration. The theme is absent, other gods carry the chart, and none of the four checks above has anything to attach to.

It takes four steps to identify your Direct Resource configuration; the free calculator does the weighted counting, and the steps tell you which totals to compare. The method is easier to compare with Indirect Resource (偏印) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.

The four-step check

  1. Find the Day Master. The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar. Every ten-god label in the chart is a relation to that one stem, so all four steps start there.
  1. Write down your Direct Resource stem from the pairing. Your Direct Resource is the one stem that produces the Day Master from the opposite polarity: Jia→Gui, Yi→Ren, Bing→Yi, Ding→Jia, Wu→Ding, Ji→Bing, Geng→Ji, Xin→Wu, Ren→Xin, Gui→Geng. For a Wood Day Master like Jia, Gui Water is the Direct Resource: Water produces Wood, and Gui is the opposite-polarity water.
  1. Count every appearance of that stem. A visible stem in the year, month, or hour pillar counts 1.0. Inside an earthly branch, the hidden stems count by their position: main qi 1.0, middle qi 0.5, residual qi 0.3. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest single position in a chart, so check the month first. The calculator prints the final Direct Resource total for you.
  1. Compare that total with the neighbours named by the four configurations. The categories the calculator prints are defined this way: Support means Friend plus Rob Wealth plus Direct Resource plus Indirect Resource; Output means Eating God plus Hurting Officer; Wealth means Direct plus Indirect Wealth; Control means Direct Officer plus Seven Killings.

That gives the four checks:

  • Officer and Resource producing each other. Is there a Direct Officer in the chart as well? The Direct Officer is the element that controls the Day Master from the opposite polarity. If both stars are present, the Officer’s element produces the Resource’s element, and the Resource then produces the Day Master.
  • Direct Resource supporting a weak Day Master. Is the Support column thin, and does your Direct Resource sit inside it? When the strength line the calculator reports says the Day Master is weak, a present Resource acts as the lifeline.
  • Wealth damaging the Resource. Is the Wealth column clearly heavier than the Direct Resource column? Wealth is what the Day Master controls, and Wealth controls Resource in the element cycle, so the practical presses on the protective.
  • Heavy Resource with no outlet. Do Direct Resource plus Support dominate while Output and Wealth stay thin? Then the Day Master is fed beyond what it can send outward.

No Direct Resource at all is a cleaner answer than any of those: with the star absent, none of the four configurations can form.

Chart A — Direct Resource 3.0 and the Officer feeding it

Chart A has Direct Resource as its heaviest theme at 3.0, running the Officer-and-Resource mechanism with an outlet present.

The printed numbers make the mechanism easy to see. Direct Resource totals 3.0 because Gui appears twice as a visible stem, in the month and hour pillars, at 1.0 each, and then again as the main qi inside the Zi branch, at 1.0. No other single god reaches that weight; Eating God is next at 2.5.

The Direct Officer row is 1.0, all of it Xin hidden as the main qi of the You branch. Xin is Metal, and Metal produces Water. So a Control star is generating the Direct Resource, and the Direct Resource then generates the Wood Day Master. That is the mechanism of configuration 1, Officer and Resource producing each other, the shape classical texts call the most orderly.

The same numbers also say what Chart A is not. Eating God at 2.5 is a real outlet: the Day Master is Wood, and Fire is what Wood produces, so the Resource feeding the Day Master has somewhere to go. Because that outlet exists, the chart does not have the closed shape of configuration 4. And Wealth at 0.6 is far too thin to act on the Resource. There is no Wealth-damaging-the-Resource shape here, even though the Resource is heavy.

Chart B — Wealth 2.3 pressing on a moderate Resource

Chart B is the opposite arrangement: Resource has dropped to 1.3, and Wealth at 2.3 is now the heaviest column, pressing on the Resource.

Count the Resource first. Gui appears once as the hour stem, at 1.0, and once as a residual qi inside the Chen branch, at 0.3, giving Direct Resource 1.3. Beside it sits an Indirect Resource — Ren in the month stem, at 1.0 — so the producing-water element is present in both polarities, but the direct form is moderate.

Now compare with Chart A. There, Wealth was 0.6 and Direct Resource was 3.0. In Chart B those positions have reversed: Wealth is 2.3 and Direct Resource is 1.3. The Wealth figure is built from Wu Earth as the main qi of both Chen and Xu, plus a residual Wu inside Yin. For a Wood Day Master, Earth is the element it controls, and Earth controls Water in the element cycle. Wealth standing beside the Resource is therefore not feeding it; it is pressing on it. That is the shape of configuration 3, Wealth damaging the Resource.

One complication keeps Chart B from being a pure case. A Direct Officer is also present at 1.5, as the middle qi of Xu and the main qi of You. Since the Officer is present alongside the Direct Resource, configuration 1, Officer and Resource producing each other, is in competition with the Wealth-damaging shape. The chart contains both classical mechanisms at once.

Chart C — no Direct Resource at all

Chart C is the absence case: Direct Resource is 0.0, so none of the four configurations exists in the chart.

There is no Gui in any visible stem, and no Gui inside any of the four branches. There is no Ren either, so Indirect Resource is also 0.0. The Resource theme — formal learning, protection, the feeding mother-star — is simply not present.

The rest of the weight goes to other gods. The Day Master is supported by Friends alone, at Friend 2.0 and Rob Wealth 1.0. Its Output is heavier than that support: Eating God at 2.0 plus Hurting Officer at 1.3 totals 3.3. So unlike Chart A, where a heavy Resource feeds the Wood Day Master, and unlike Chart B, where Wealth presses on a moderate Resource, Chart C has no Resource column to place beside anything. Where the star is absent, the four configurations do not form, and the chart is carried by the other gods.

These three charts are structural illustrations, not verdicts on lives. Run the four steps on your own chart, read the strength line the calculator prints, and stop at which configuration matches; the check itself ends at the shape, not at a final judgement.

四What to do once you know

The star does not change; what stands next to it does. Direct Resource has one fixed relation to the Day Master: it produces it. But producing is a mechanism, not a behaviour. Classical practice places the star into four configurations by what surrounds it, and each configuration calls for a different action. If your chart contains no Direct Resource at all, none of the four applies. This point connects directly with Friend (比肩) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.

1. Officer and Resource producing each other

The Direct Officer produces the Direct Resource, and the Direct Resource produces you. Rule feeds learning, and learning feeds the self. The work settings that fit this arrangement are the ones with actual rules: licensed professions, public hierarchies, crafts with examinations.

This shape tends to reward completing externally imposed steps. When a career requires a credential, take the exam; the requirement is what makes the study stick. Study with a fixed syllabus and a real test tends to produce durable competence, while free-form study with no deadline tends to fade out.

This shape tends to punish abandoning structured settings because they feel restrictive. Leave the system and set up without the Officer, and the producing relation is interrupted: nothing stands behind the Resource generating the requirement that organizes the learning.

2. Direct Resource supporting a weak Day Master

Here support for the Day Master is thin, and the Direct Resource is the lifeline. When you enter demanding work, check whether real feeding is present: a mentor who checks your work, a training program, a supervisor's corrections. In this shape, staying under that instruction until the skill belongs to you tends to work; leaving early tends to undercut you.

Do not mistake needing instruction for a character flaw; asking for it is the correct action. Choose one school, one trade, one mentor, and stay until you can reproduce the skill without them. This shape tends to punish pride about learning things alone.

3. Wealth damaging the Resource

Wealth controls Resource in the control cycle, so the money-making side presses against the protective, learning side. The classical warning is conditional: Wealth damages Resource when the Day Master needs the Resource. When the Resource is needed, wealth-driven practicality tends to win on schedule.

What follows is separation, not balance. Put the formal learning in a fixed slot before the working day, and pay for it so that skipping is visible: a prepaid course, an exam registration, a study partner waiting at a set time. Relying on intention alone tends to lose, because the Wealth side offers constant, urgent alternatives.

This shape tends to punish postponing a long educational commitment to take on a second income stream. The income is real, but it comes from the side that consumes the Resource. Guard the learning slot as you would a paying client, because nothing else in this shape will.

4. Heavy Resource on a strong Day Master with no outlet

Here the Day Master is overfed: Direct Resource and support dominate while Output and Wealth are thin. There is plenty of incoming supply and very little outgoing work. The correction is not more Resource but outlet.

If the count shows this shape, respond by making finished things, not by taking another course. A page written, a tool built, a problem solved for an actual person—each is Output, and this shape runs on routes for the surplus to leave. Make the week's small finished thing the condition before the week's study; study without a finished thing tends to become thinking in place of doing.

This shape tends to punish accumulating books, courses, and notes that do not turn into anything you have made.

Common misreadings

“Direct Resource means a good mother and an easy education, so nothing else needs checking.” The mother and formal learning are there, but as tendencies of one relation, not as a verdict. The same relation unmanaged is the passivity and dependence classical texts describe under a heavy Resource. Which side shows depends on the neighbours, so checking them is exactly the point.

“More Direct Resource means more protection.” Resource produces you until the feed exceeds what the Day Master can use; past that point additional Resource stops protecting. With Output and Wealth thin and support heavy, the classical reading becomes the overfed self: the tendency is inertia and reliance. The useful question is not how much Resource is present but whether the chart has anywhere for its energy to go.

“No Direct Resource means no protection.” Not having the star means the theme is absent, and absence is not a negative presence. Other gods then carry the chart: Friends and Rob Wealth can support, Direct Officer or Seven Killings can structure, Eating God and Hurting Officer can express. What changes is which mechanisms are at work, not whether the chart is damaged.

Where this stops

Direct Resource is one of ten relations defined against the Day Master. It cannot tell you whether your Day Master is strong or weak, because strength is a property of the whole chart: support, output, wealth, and control together. The free calculator shows that count; this article does not decide it for you. None of this predicts events; no star determines wealth, divorce, bankruptcy, or illness. What it offers is a mechanism: when a certain neighbour is present, this kind of chart tends to reward one action and punish another. You are the one who acts.
