一 What it is
Ren Xu Day Pillar means a chart whose day stem is Ren Yang Water sitting on the Xu Earth branch, a position holding hidden Wu Seven Killings (1), Xin Direct Resource (.5), and Ding Direct Wealth (.3). Think of a deep river flowing over dry, packed earth: the river is exposed and must draw from every small spring nearby, because the ground beneath it stores heat and minerals, not water.
What distinguishes this pillar is that Xu is not a Water root. For Ren, hidden Water means Ren (Friend, a same-stem root) or Gui (Rob Wealth, same element but not same stem). Xu contains neither. Its Xin metal is Direct Resource, which can generate Water, but metal here is not itself a root. Its Wu Earth is Seven Killings, the Officer category for Ren, never Resource. Its Ding Fire is Direct Wealth. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores.
Ren's growth phases run forward, and at Xu the Day Master sits in Youth (Guan Dai). Because the day position's reference stem is Ren itself, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase match there. Youth is symbolic imagery of a stem entering its active, dressing stage, not a biological or life-event prediction.
Read each position from its own facts. In chart A, the month branch Hai hides Ren Friend and Jia Eating God, giving a genuine same-stem root; the year branch You hides only Xin Direct Resource. In chart B, both year and month branches are Wu, hiding Ding Direct Wealth and Ji Direct Officer, so no hidden Water root appears in those pillars. The day pillar stays Ren Xu in both; the surrounding pillars are what change.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read This in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the day branch. For 壬戌, 壬 sits above 戌, and the hidden stems 戊, 辛 and 丁 appear as small characters inside the 戌 box. The Day Master is the stem alone; the day pillar means stem and branch together. If you have not built the grid yet, calculate your chart first, then return to this column.
There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main grid. Phase names such as 冠带 (Youth) come from the article tables or the full overview, where the engine lists the Day Master phase and the own-pillar-stem phase for each position. At the day position these two match because the reference stem is identical there.
Element balance appears as weighted totals, not as a phase or a strength verdict. The fixed 1 / .5 / .3 values are the calculator's bookkeeping weights for hidden stems, not seasonal strength scores. If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, rerun the calculator with an accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.
三 How to read it
How to Read Ren Xu Step by Step
Begin with the cycle index, then move to the stem. Ren is Yang Water, and that polarity fixes both the direction of the growth phases and every Ten God label attached to the chart. For Ren: Jia is Eating God, Yi Hurting Officer, Bing Indirect Wealth, Ding Direct Wealth, Wu Seven Killings, Ji Direct Officer, Geng Indirect Resource, Xin Direct Resource, Ren Friend, Gui Rob Wealth. Apply these labels to Ren only. A hidden stem keeps its own polarity even when the branch polarity differs, so Xin stays Yin Metal and Ding stays Yin Fire inside Yang Earth Xu. The cycle index tells you where the pillar sits in the sequence; it does not change the stem's element or polarity.
Next, separate root from resource. Ren needs hidden Water — Ren or Gui — to be rooted. Hidden Ren is a same-stem root; hidden Gui is same-element but not same-stem. Visible peers such as a Ren or Gui stem are not themselves hidden roots. Metal is Resource and can feed Water, but it is not a Water root. Earth belongs to the Officer category for Ren, so Wu and Ji are pressure, never Resource and never a Water root. Inside Xu the hidden stems are Wu Seven Killings at weight 1, Xin Direct Resource at 0.5, and Ding Direct Wealth at 0.3. Those fixed weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores.
Then read the phase. At Xu the Day Master sits in Youth (Guan Dai), a forward stage for a yang stem. Because the day stem and the reference stem are identical at that position, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase match. Read the phase as symbolic texture, not a biological or life-event prediction. The Xu Dog Earthly Branch page covers the branch itself; here the question is what Xu does beneath a Ren Day Master.
Finally, read the complete chart. Check every position from its own facts, and identify which pillars actually change between two charts. In chart A the year and month are Gui You and Gui Hai, giving hidden Ren in Hai and hidden Xin in You. In chart B those two pillars become Ren Wu and Bing Wu, so the month Water root and year Xin Resource placement disappear, while Metal Resource remains in Xu and Si and the fixed Fire and Earth totals rise. The day and hour pillars are identical in both. That contrast is the repeatable method: hold the day pillar fixed, then let the other three positions show whether Ren is rooted, fed, or pressed.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Ren | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 戊 | Seven Killings | 1 |
| 辛 | Direct Resource | 0.5 |
| 丁 | Direct Wealth | 0.3 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Ren phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 壬戌 | 59 | 冠带 Youth |
四 When the reading changes
Chart A: A Hidden Ren Root in the Month
In chart A the month branch is Hai, hiding Ren as a Friend at full weight and Jia as Eating God at half weight. That hidden Ren is a same-stem root, so the Day Master stands on real Water ground. The year branch You hides Xin Direct Resource at full weight, and both year and month stems are Gui Rob Wealth. Metal generates Water, yet generation is not rooting: Xin supports Ren without giving it a storage place. The day branch Xu still hides Wu Seven Killings, Xin Direct Resource, and Ding Direct Wealth, and Xu stores Fire, not Water. The Seven Killings in Xu is read beside a separate hidden Water root in the month rather than used alone to judge strength. The Youth phase at the day position describes a stage of formation, not a life event. Relationship reading stays limited: the spouse palace is Xu, whose only wealth stem is hidden Ding at 0.3, a bookkeeping value rather than a seasonal strength score. Career reflection stays with the placements too, since visible Rob Wealth peers form the surface Water layer, without promising any title.
Chart B: Fire and Earth Occupy the Month
Chart B replaces the year and month pillars with Ren Wu and Bing Wu. The year stem Ren is a Friend, but the year branch Wu hides Ding Direct Wealth at full weight and Ji Direct Officer at half weight, and the month stem Bing is Indirect Wealth over the same hidden pair. Fire now carries 4.3 against Water's 2, and the hidden Ren inside Hai is absent, leaving no Water root anywhere in the chart. The day branch Xu still hides Wu Seven Killings, Xin Direct Resource, and Ding Direct Wealth, and Xu remains a Fire storage branch. Xin Direct Resource at 0.5 supports the Day Master but does not root it, so Ren leans on generation and on the visible Friend stem. The day position still shows Youth for both the Day Master and the pillar stem, because the reference stem is identical there. With wealth and officer hidden in both Wu branches, the reading limit is clear: Wealth and Officer categories repeat in the two Wu branches, while no hidden Water appears, so reflection belongs on how effort is allocated, not on predicting income or a partner.
The Constant Day Branch: Xu's Three Hidden Stems
Across both charts the day branch Xu is fixed, and its hidden stems carry set weights: Wu Seven Killings at 1, Xin Direct Resource at 0.5, and Ding Direct Wealth at 0.3. These are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores. Wu is Yang Earth, and Earth controls Water, so the Seven Killings sits in the Officer category rather than in the Resource category. Xin is Yin Metal and does generate Water, but a generating stem is not a root; only a hidden Ren or Gui would give the Day Master a Water root, and Xu holds neither. Ding is Yin Fire and represents Direct Wealth. Each hidden stem keeps its own polarity even though Xu is a Yang branch. The Youth phase at the day position is symbolic of preparation and growth, not a biological or life-event prediction. For study, how to use the 12 growth phases means reading the phase as a stage label attached to a position rather than as a forecast.
What Actually Differs Between A and B
The two charts share the day pillar Ren Xu and the hour pillar Yi Si, so every difference sits in the year and month. In A, Gui You and Gui Hai bring a hidden Ren root in Hai, a full-weight Xin Direct Resource in You, and two visible Rob Wealth stems. In B, Ren Wu and Bing Wu bring two Wu branches whose hidden Ding Direct Wealth and Ji Direct Officer replace that Water root, while the visible stems shift to Friend and Indirect Wealth. The hour pillar Yi Si is identical in both: Yi is Hurting Officer, and Si hides Bing Indirect Wealth at 1, Geng Indirect Resource at 0.5, and Wu Seven Killings at 0.3. Because the day stem is Ren, a Yang stem, the growth phases run forward through the sequence, and the day position matches itself at Youth in both charts. The practical contrast is between a chart with a genuine Water reservoir in the month and one where Fire and Earth occupy that space, leaving Xin in Xu and Geng in Si as Resource support without a hidden Water root. Neither reading should be pushed into a forecast about career or partnership; the placements describe conditions, and the person's choices remain the variable.

Weighted element totals: Wood 1.5, Fire 1.3, Earth 1.3, Metal 2, Water 4.
Chart A places Ren Yang Water at the day position over Xu Yang Earth. The Four Pillars grid shows the day stem on top, the day branch below, and small hidden-stem characters inside the branch. Xu hides Wu Seven Killings at weight 1, Xin Direct Resource at .5, and Ding Direct Wealth at .3. Those weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores. The Day Master phase at this position is Youth (Guan Dai), and because the reference stem at the day position is Ren itself, the own-pillar-stem phase matches it. Youth is symbolic imagery of a stem entering its capped, formal stage, not a biological or life-event prediction.
Ren needs hidden Water, meaning a hidden Ren or Gui, to be rooted. Xu carries neither, so this day branch gives the Day Master no root. Xu is Fire storage, not Water storage. Xin is Direct Resource: Metal that supports Water, but support is not a root. Earth is the Officer category for Ren, never Resource and never a Water root, so Wu Seven Killings controlling Yang Water is the branch's dominant hidden fact. Hidden stems keep their own polarity: Wu is Yang, Xin and Ding are Yin, regardless of Xu's Yang branch polarity.
Two contrasts sharpen this. First, in Chart A the month branch Hai hides Ren Friend at weight 1 and Jia Eating God at .5, so the actual Water root sits in the month, not the day. Second, the year branch You hides only Xin Direct Resource at weight 1, repeating the support-without-root pattern. What cannot follow from the Xu label is calling it a Water root, or treating Xin as a root because Metal generates Water. Resource and root are separate functions, and a visible peer stem is not itself a hidden root.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 丙 | 壬 | 乙 |
| Branch | 午 | 午 | 戌 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Friend | Indirect Wealth | Day Master | Hurting Officer |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Direct Wealth (1) 己 Direct Officer (0.5) |
丁 Direct Wealth (1) 己 Direct Officer (0.5) |
戊 Seven Killings (1) 辛 Direct Resource (0.5) 丁 Direct Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Indirect Wealth (1) 庚 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Seven Killings (0.3) |
| Ren Day Master phase | 胎 Conception | 胎 Conception | 冠带 Youth | 绝 Extinction |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 帝旺 Emperor | 冠带 Youth | 沐浴 Bath |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 4.3, Earth 2.3, Metal 1, Water 2.
The Ren Xu day pillar places Ren Yang Water above Xu Yang Earth. Inside Xu, Wu Seven Killings carries weight 1, Xin Direct Resource 0.5, and Ding Direct Wealth 0.3. Xu stores Fire, not Water, so Ren gains no root here. Xin Metal is Resource: it supports Water but is not a Water root. Earth is the Officer category for Ren, never Resource. Ren needs hidden Water — Ren or Gui — for roots. Hidden Ren is a same-stem root; hidden Gui is same-element, not same-stem. Visible peers are not themselves hidden roots. At Xu, Ren sits in Youth (Guan Dai), a forward growth phase for a yang stem; the Day Master and day pillar's own stem references match, so both phases read Youth. This is symbolic pacing, not a life-event prediction.
Chart A surrounded this pillar with Gui You, Gui Hai, and Yi Si. Its month branch Hai hides Ren Friend and Jia Eating God, giving the Day Master a genuine same-stem root, while You supplies Xin Direct Resource. Chart B changes the year and month to Ren Wu and Bing Wu. Those two Wu branches hide Ding Direct Wealth and Ji Direct Officer, so the surrounding pillars shift from Water roots and Metal Resource toward Fire Wealth and Earth Officer. The day and hour pillars — Ren Xu and Yi Si — stay identical between A and B.
In B, the visible Ren on the year stem is a Friend, but it sits on Wu and is not a hidden root. The month stem Bing is Indirect Wealth. Yi in the hour is Hurting Officer. Fire and Earth now dominate the surrounding positions, while the only Metal Resource remains Xin inside Xu and Geng inside Si. The 1/.5/.3 weights are the calculator's bookkeeping values, not seasonal strength scores.
To check your own chart, locate every hidden stem in each branch, label it with Ren's Ten Gods, and ask whether any hidden Ren or Gui appears. If none does, the Day Master has no root in that branch, regardless of visible Water stems nearby. Compare the Geng Xu Day Pillar to see how a Metal Day Master reads the same branch differently.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
