Gua Su (寡宿): the Widowed Star Without the Fatalistic Reading

一 What it is

What Gua Su Means

Gua Su (寡宿), often rendered "Widowed Star," is a traditional shensha marker in Bazi. In plain terms, it is a small tag attached to a chart when the year branch falls into one seasonal group and a target branch appears elsewhere. The name sounds heavy, but it is not a literal event forecast. Think of it like a weather app icon: a cloud symbol tells you the forecast includes clouds, not that your day is ruined. The icon is a label, not the whole story. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.

The historical name comes from old poetic language about solitude, not from a rule that predicts widowhood, partner death, or relationship failure. Those outcomes are never established by this star. A Day branch can register as a possible hit, but it is never a second basis; the rule is year-only. The seasonal grouping of the year branch is also not the actual birth season.

To look it up, compare the year branch against four groups: Zi-Chou-Hai targets Xu; Yin-Mao-Chen targets Chou; Si-Wu-Wei targets Chen; Shen-You-Xu targets Wei. If the target appears in any branch, the star is present. Counts are not strength scores, and no star changes totals or diagnoses a person.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Look in the Calculator

Open the homepage calculator and enter the birth date, then the birth hour if you know it. If the hour is unknown, select “I don’t know the hour”; do not invent a time, because the hour pillar would be fabricated and every hit in that slot would be meaningless. Submit the form and read the result in two stages.

First inspect the Four Pillars table: year, month, day, hour, each with a stem and a branch. The day stem is the Day Master; here every example uses Jia 甲. Second, open the Stars in your chart panel. Each star lists a basis and its hit positions.

Find the exact label Widowed Star. Its basis line identifies the year branch; its hit list tells you which columns contain the target. Read those lower branch characters, not the upper stems or the smaller hidden-stem list. For Gua Su (寡宿), the basis is the year branch, grouped seasonally: Zi-Chou-Hai targets Xu; Yin-Mao-Chen targets Chou; Si-Wu-Wei targets Chen; Shen-You-Xu targets Wei. Then scan all four branches for hits; a Day branch can be a hit but never a second basis.

If no match is displayed, compare the known branch positions with the target before treating the star as absent. An unknown hour leaves that one position unassessed. Open the Bazi calculator.

三 How to read it

Start with the Year branch. That branch is the basis. Gua Su 寡宿 uses a year-only rule, so the Day branch is never a second basis. Read the Year branch against its seasonal group: Hai 亥, Zi 子, Chou 丑 target Xu 戌; Yin 寅, Mao 卯, Chen 辰 target Chou 丑; Si 巳, Wu 午, Wei 未 target Chen 辰; Shen 申, You 酉, Xu 戌 target Wei 未. The target is the star position you then scan for. This seasonal grouping of the Year branch is not the same as the actual birth season. The method is easier to compare with Gu Chen (孤辰): the Solitary Star, Seasonal Groups and Its Meaning in Bazi.

Next, scan all four branches — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — for that target. A match is a hit, not a new basis. In the first example, Year branch You 酉 sits in the Shen-You-Xu group, so the target is Wei 未; Wei appears in the Month and Hour branches, giving two hits. In the second, Year branch Shen 申 gives the same target Wei 未, found once in the Hour. The Day branch can be a hit, but never a second basis. When a year/day triad star is involved, targets merge before you scan all four branches; Gua Su itself stays year-only.

Do not confuse basis with hit when reading ten gods. The Day Master, here Jia 甲, is the reference point for ten-god interpretation: Jia to Jia is Friend, Jia to Yi is Rob Wealth, Jia to Bing is Eating God, Jia to Ding is Hurting Officer, Jia to Wu 戊 is Indirect Wealth, Jia to Ji is Direct Wealth, Jia to Geng is Seven Killings, Jia to Xin is Direct Officer, Jia to Ren is Indirect Resource, and Jia to Gui is Direct Resource. That mapping explains how visible and hidden stems relate to the Day Master. It does not decide where Gua Su 寡宿 falls. Gua Su is a branch lookup from the Year branch, so a chart can show a strong ten-god pattern and still have no Gua Su hit, or the reverse.

Weighted ten-god sums count visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at positional weights 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3. Hidden contributions follow that convention once; only the visible Day stem is excluded, while hidden Jia remains Friend. These counts are not strength scores, and no star changes totals or diagnoses a person.

One meaningful limit: the birth time cannot be inferred from star counts. Treat any interpretation of Gua Su 寡宿 as traditional symbolism, not a measured outcome. It is not a prediction of widowhood, partner death, or relationship failure.

四 When it plays out differently

When the target branch is absent

Gua Su (寡宿) is a year-only marker: the year branch's seasonal group fixes one target branch, and you then scan the other three branches for it. The four groups are Zi-Chou-Hai → Xu, Yin-Mao-Chen → Chou, Si-Wu-Wei → Chen, and Shen-You-Xu → Wei. A common configuration is simply no hit at all. Check it by writing the year branch, naming its group, then reading month, day, and hour branches one by one. If none carries the target, the star is absent and nothing further is read from it. Absence is a complete result, not a deficiency to compensate for, and it does not license reading the star from some other branch. This point connects directly with Yue De (月德贵人): Moon Virtue and the Stem Row You Need to Check.

One target landing in two slots

The target branch can appear more than once among the three non-year branches. Take a year branch of You 酉: it belongs to Shen-You-Xu, so the target is Wei 未. If both the month and hour branches are Wei, the lookup records two hits rather than one. Verify by listing each branch with its slot label and marking every exact glyph match; do not merge two hits into a single stronger hit, and do not treat the day branch as a second basis. Two hits mean the same target occupies two positions, a positional fact about the chart, not a doubled quantity of anything. The trace stays one row with two hit slots.

Gua Su beside Gu Chen

Gua Su is often compared with Gu Chen (孤辰), its paired solitude marker. The two share the same four year-branch groups but point to different targets: Hai-Zi-Chou → Xu for Gua Su versus Yin for Gu Chen; Yin-Mao-Chen → Chou versus Si; Si-Wu-Wei → Chen versus Shen; Shen-You-Xu → Wei versus Hai. To compare them, run both lookups from the same year branch and record each target separately, then scan all four branches for each. A chart can carry one, both, or neither. The comparison is structural: same basis, different target glyphs, independent hit lists. Neither star changes the other's hits, and neither is inferred from the other's presence.

Day branch as a possible hit

Because the scan covers all four branches, the day branch can itself be the target. With a year branch of Shen 申, the target is Wei 未; if the day branch is Wei, that slot registers as a hit alongside any month or hour hits. Check by including the day branch in the scan while still excluding the visible day stem from any ten-god counting. The day branch is a legitimate target slot here, but it never becomes a second basis for deriving the target. Position matters for reading which slot carries the marker, not for generating a new target. A day-branch hit and a month-branch hit are recorded as separate slots even when the glyph is identical.

Gua Su against a ten-god count

Gua Su and the Ten Gods are separate instruments. The star comes from a branch lookup; ten-god sums come from visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 by position, with hidden Jia still counted as Friend. In one supplied chart, year branch You gives target Wei, hitting month and hour; the same chart's weighted sums include Direct Officer 3, Direct Wealth 2.5, Hurting Officer 2, and Rob Wealth 1.6. Those numbers neither confirm nor cancel the star. Read the star from its trace, read the sums from their own tally, and keep the two results side by side without letting either reinterpret the other. The star's presence or absence is not a strength score, and the sums are not a verdict on the star.

Widowed Star: Month 未 (branch), Hour 未 (branch). Basis: year branch You, in the Shen-You-Xu seasonal group.

Chart A: 辛酉 · 乙未 · 甲午 · 辛未

The year branch is 酉 (You), which falls in the 申酉戌 seasonal group. Under the year-only rule for 寡宿 (Gua Su, the Widowed Star), that group targets 未 (Wei). Scanning all four branches, the month branch 未 and the hour branch 未 both match. The trace therefore reads: basis year 酉 → target 未 → hits month and hour. The day branch 午 is not a second basis; it simply does not match here. This star is a positional marker, not a verdict, and it never predicts widowhood, partner loss, or relationship failure.

With 甲 (Jia) as the Day Master, the visible non-day stems are 辛 in the year, 乙 in the month, and 辛 in the hour. Hidden stems are 辛 in year 酉; 己, 丁, 乙 in month 未; 丁, 己 in day 午; and 己, 丁, 乙 in hour 未. Reading these against Jia: 辛 is Direct Officer (正官), appearing visibly twice and hidden once in 酉. 乙 is Rob Wealth (劫财), visible in the month and hidden in both 未 branches. 己 is Direct Wealth (正财), hidden in the month, day, and hour branches. 丁 is Hurting Officer (伤官), hidden in the month, day, and hour branches.

Three concrete relationships stand out. First, the two visible 辛 Direct Officer stems sit at year and hour, bracketing the chart, while the same officer hides in 酉 — officer influence is layered rather than singular. Second, 乙 Rob Wealth appears visibly in the month yet also hides inside both 未 branches, so the same ten god occupies visible and hidden positions simultaneously. Third, 己 Direct Wealth and 丁 Hurting Officer share all three hidden branch slots (month, day, hour), coupling wealth and output in the hidden layer. The distinctive configuration is this doubled 未 target: the same branch that carries the Gua Su hit also carries Rob Wealth, Direct Wealth, and Hurting Officer together, so the solitude marker sits inside a cluster rather than standing alone. Note that the day branch 午 contributes hidden 丁 and 己 but no Gua Su hit.

Chart B — 庚申 / 戊寅 / 甲子 / 辛未

丙 Eating God (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
癸 Direct Resource (1) 己 Direct Wealth (1)
丁 Hurting Officer (0.5)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.3)

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Seven Killings 2.0; Indirect Resource 0.5; Indirect Wealth 1.6; Friend 1.0; Eating God 0.5; Direct Resource 1.0; Direct Officer 1.0; Direct Wealth 1.0; Hurting Officer 0.5; Rob Wealth 0.3.

Widowed Star: Hour 未 (branch). Basis: year branch Shen, in the Shen-You-Xu seasonal group.

Chart B shares Jia 甲 as its Day Master, so every ten-god label below is read from Jia. Its pillars are Geng Shen 庚申, Wu Yin 戊寅, Jia Zi 甲子, and Xin Wei 辛未. The year branch Shen 申 belongs to the Shen-You-Xu seasonal group, whose 寡宿 (Gua Su, Widowed Star) target is Wei 未. Scanning all four branches, only the hour branch Wei 未 matches, so the trace records one hit: year Shen → hour Wei. Chart A, by contrast, had year branch You 酉 in the same seasonal group and hit Wei twice, in the month and hour. The lookup rule is identical; only the number of matching branches changed. Note that the seasonal grouping of the year branch is not the actual birth season.

What stayed the same is the basis: both charts use the year branch alone, and neither treats the Day branch as a second basis. What changed is the count of hits, not the star's meaning. Gua Su remains a solitude marker, not a prediction of widowhood or relationship failure. It is also not a Ten God; it is a separate 神煞 (shensha) label, so it adds nothing to the weighted ten-god sums and does not diagnose a person.

Those sums come from visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 by position. In Chart B, visible Geng 庚 is Seven Killings (2.0 with its hidden root), visible Wu 戊 is Indirect Wealth (1.6), and visible Xin 辛 is Direct Officer (1.0). Hidden Jia 甲 in Yin 寅 stays Friend (1.0), while hidden Gui 癸 in Zi 子 is Direct Resource (1.0). Chart A instead showed visible Xin 辛 as Direct Officer (3.0), visible Yi 乙 as Rob Wealth (1.6), and hidden Ji 己 as Direct Wealth (2.5). The star count differs, but the birth time still cannot be inferred from these counts.

六 How common is this configuration?

Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations in this enumeration, 寡宿 appears in 22.9745% (119,100 combinations). Each chart is counted once, regardless of repeated hits.

This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or a birth-registry frequency. We enumerate 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots, respecting the derived month and hour stems. Calendar duration and actual birth timing are not population-weighted.

The year branch alone supplies the target for each star. The day branch can be a hit but is not another basis. The engine result and an independent lookup implementation agree on every combination.
