一 What it is
What Yue De Means
Yue De (月德贵人, Moon Virtue) is a traditional Chinese astrology star, or shensha, that symbolizes gentle help and the softening of misfortune. Think of it like a spare umbrella tucked in your bag: you may never need it, but its presence offers quiet reassurance on a rainy day. The star is not a literal event forecast. Its historical name comes from poetic symbolism, not from an actual moon or a guaranteed rescue, so treat it as a symbolic marker rather than a promise of protection. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.
The rule is simple. The month branch determines one visible heavenly stem target: Yin, Wu, and Xu point to Bing; Shen, Zi, and Chen point to Ren; Hai, Mao, and Wei point to Jia; Si, You, and Chou point to Geng. You then scan all four visible stems, including the Day Master, but never hidden stems. For a Jia Day Master born in a Mao month, the Day stem itself is necessarily a hit. Ten God strength and hidden-root counts cannot create the star, and it is not the same as the disputed Heavenly Virtue.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Find Moon Virtue in the Calculator
On the homepage calculator, enter the birth date, clock time, and place, then submit. The output shows the Four Pillars — Year, Month, Day, Hour — each with a heavenly stem above a branch. Below that, open the Stars in your chart panel, where named stars such as Moon Virtue (月德贵人, Yue De Guiren) appear with their basis and hit positions.
Moon Virtue uses one basis: the MONTH BRANCH. Read its group, then the target stem: 寅午戌 → 丙 (Bing); 申子辰 → 壬 (Ren); 亥卯未 → 甲 (Jia); 巳酉丑 → 庚 (Geng). Now scan the TOP VISIBLE STEM ROW only — Year, Month, Day, and Hour stems, including the Day Master. Hidden stems never count. With Jia 甲 as Day Master and a Mao 卯 month, the Day stem itself is necessarily a hit.
Check each configuration independently. In one sample chart, pillars 庚申 己卯 甲申 甲戌 give hits at Day and Hour; in another, 辛酉 辛卯 甲辰 乙丑 gives a Day hit only. Other topics use branch targets instead, so do not reuse this stem scan for them. If the hour is unknown, do not invent it; the calculator cannot infer birth time from star counts. This star carries traditional gentle-help symbolism, not a protection guarantee. Open the Bazi calculator.

三 How to read it
How to Look Up Yue De
Yue De (月德贵人) is a stem-row lookup, not a branch scan. The basis is the month branch, grouped into four triads: 子辰申, 丑巳酉, 寅午戌, 卯未亥. Each group fixes one visible heavenly stem target: 壬, 庚, 丙, 甲 respectively. Read the month branch, find its group, then scan all four visible stems — Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Hidden stems never count here. If the target appears in any visible stem slot, that slot is a hit. The method is easier to compare with Gua Su (寡宿): the Widowed Star Without the Fatalistic Reading.
Keep basis and hit separate. The basis is the month branch group; the hit is a visible stem matching the target. For a Jia 甲 Day Master born in a Mao 卯 month, the group 卯未亥 targets 甲, so the Day stem itself is necessarily a hit. That is a structural consequence of the rule, not a sign of extra strength. The same logic applies in the first sample chart: month 卯 targets 甲, and both the Day and Hour stems are 甲, giving two hits. In the second sample, month 卯 again targets 甲, but only the Day stem matches.
The Day Master matters for ten-god interpretation, not for deciding whether Yue De exists. Jia 甲 as Day Master maps other stems to Friend, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource, and Direct Resource. Those labels describe relationships among stems. They do not create, remove, or alter the Yue De lookup. A chart can show strong ten-god counts and still have no Yue De hit, because the star depends only on the month-branch group and visible stems.
Hidden contributions follow a separate convention: visible non-day stems count at 1.0, while hidden stems carry positional weights of 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3. Those weighted sums feed ten-god totals, not Yue De. Counts are not strength scores, and no star changes totals or diagnoses a person.
One limitation: Yue De is traditional gentle-help symbolism, not a measured effect or protection guarantee. It is also not Heavenly Virtue, which is deliberately absent from this calculator. For an unknown hour, report only the visible positions that can be established; do not invent an hour stem to complete the lookup.
| Month branch group → visible stem target | Target to locate |
|---|---|
| 子辰申 | 壬 |
| 丑巳酉 | 庚 |
| 寅午戌 | 丙 |
| 卯未亥 | 甲 |
四 When it plays out differently
When the target stem is absent
Yue De (月德贵人) is a month-stem lookup: the month branch fixes one visible heavenly stem, and you scan all four visible stems, Day Master included. For a Jia 甲 Day Master born in a Mao 卯 month, the target is Jia itself, so the Day stem is necessarily a hit. If the month branch sits in the 寅午戌 group, the target is Bing 丙; in 申子辰 it is Ren 壬; in 丑巳酉 it is Geng 庚. A chart can show the correct month branch and still contain none of the target stem among the four visible stems. That is an absence, not a failed lookup. Check it by writing the month branch, converting it to its target stem, then reading the year, month, day, and hour stems one by one. If the target never appears, Yue De is simply not present. The star is not created by ten-god strength, hidden roots, or a strong Ten God count; those numbers describe something else. This point connects directly with Tian Yi Noble Person (天乙贵人): the most valued auspicious star in Bazi and how to read yours.
Repeated target slots
Because the scan covers four visible stems, the same target can appear more than once. In the configuration with pillars 庚申, 己卯, 甲申, 甲戌, the month branch Mao 卯 targets Jia 甲, and both the Day stem and the Hour stem are Jia. The trace records two hits: day and hour. This is a repeated target slot, not a second star with a different rule. To verify, list each visible stem with its slot label and mark every match to the month-derived target. Two hits mean the target occupies two positions; they do not double the symbolic weight or change the lookup. The count of hits is positional information, not a strength score.
Yue De compared with Heavenly Virtue
Yue De is often mentioned beside Heavenly Virtue (天德贵人), but they are independent lookups. Heavenly Virtue is a disputed star and is deliberately absent from this calculator, so you cannot substitute one for the other or assume that finding Yue De implies Heavenly Virtue. The comparison is bounded: Yue De uses the month branch to fix a visible stem target and scans all four visible stems. Heavenly Virtue, where it is used at all, follows a different rule set that this tool does not implement. Check Yue De only against its own four-row lookup. If a chart shows Yue De, that tells you the month-derived target stem is visible somewhere; it says nothing about Heavenly Virtue.
Positional distinction: Day versus Hour
The same target stem can land in different slots, and the slot label is part of the trace. In the configuration with pillars 辛酉, 辛卯, 甲辰, 乙丑, the month branch Mao 卯 again targets Jia 甲, and only the Day stem is Jia. The trace records a single hit at day. Compare that with the earlier configuration where Jia appears at both day and hour. Both charts satisfy the month-stem rule, but the positional record differs: one hit at day versus hits at day and hour. This distinction is observable and bounded. It does not rank the charts, predict outcomes, or diagnose the person. It reports where the target stem sits among the four visible stems.
What the lookup does not do
Yue De is a visible-stem scan. Hidden stems are never counted for this star, even when they contain the target. Yue De stays tied to the month branch group and the four visible stems. Keep the month branch as the reference even when the target is found in the Day column. Use the lookup table, mark the hits, and read the slot labels.

Moon Virtue: Day 甲 (stem), Hour 甲 (stem). Basis: triad of month Mao.
Chart A: Geng Shen, Ji Mao, Jia Shen, Jia Xu
This chart's four pillars are 庚申 (Geng Shen) in the year, 己卯 (Ji Mao) in the month, 甲申 (Jia Shen) on the day, and 甲戌 (Jia Xu) in the hour. The Moon Virtue lookup starts from the month branch, here 卯 (Mao). Mao belongs to the 卯未亥 group, whose visible-stem target is 甲 (Jia). The scan covers all four visible stems, including the Day Master, and never hidden stems. Two stems match: the day stem 甲 and the hour stem 甲. The trace therefore records hits at the day and hour slots, with the month branch as basis and Jia as target.
Under the Jia Day Master, the visible non-day stems are Geng in the year, Ji in the month, and Jia in the hour. Geng is Seven Killings, Ji is Direct Wealth, and the hour Jia is Friend. The hidden stems add texture: the year and day branches 申 (Shen) each hold Geng, Ren, and Wu, while the hour branch 戌 (Xu) holds Wu, Xin, and Ding. Ren is Indirect Resource, Wu is Indirect Wealth, Xin is Direct Officer, and Ding is Hurting Officer.
Three concrete relationships stand out. First, the two Shen branches double the Seven Killings presence, since Geng appears visibly in the year and hidden in both Shen. Second, the month's Ji Direct Wealth sits beside the Mao branch that carries hidden Yi, a Rob Wealth stem, placing wealth and its rival in the same pillar. Third, the hour's visible Jia Friend is rooted by the hidden Yi in Mao, linking the hour stem back to the month branch.
What makes this configuration distinctive is that the Moon Virtue target Jia is satisfied twice over, once by the Day Master itself and once by the hour stem, while the same chart carries a heavy Seven Killings and Direct Officer load from Geng, Shen, and Xin. The star's presence here rests only on visible stems; hidden roots and ten-god totals cannot create it.
| Position | year | month | day | hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 辛 | 甲 | 乙 |
| Branch | 酉 | 卯 | 辰 | 丑 |
| Ten god | Direct Officer | Direct Officer | Day Master | Rob Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 辛 Direct Officer (1) | 乙 Rob Wealth (1) | 戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.5) 癸 Direct Resource (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Direct Officer 3.3; Rob Wealth 2.5; Indirect Wealth 1.0; Direct Resource 0.8; Direct Wealth 1.0.
Moon Virtue: Day 甲 (stem). Basis: triad of month Mao.
Chart B: Yue De in a Different Pillar Set
Chart B is 辛酉 (Xin You) year, 辛卯 (Xin Mao) month, 甲辰 (Jia Chen) day, 乙丑 (Yi Chou) hour. The month branch is still 卯 (Mao), so the lookup row is unchanged: 卯未亥 → 甲. Scanning all four visible stems — 辛, 辛, 甲, 乙 — finds only the Day Master 甲 (Jia) as a hit. The hour stem is 乙 (Yi), not 甲, so the Hour slot that qualified in Chart A does not qualify here. The birth time still cannot be inferred from these star counts; the hour pillar is simply given.
What changed is the visible stem row, not the rule. Chart A carried 甲 in both Day and Hour; Chart B carries 甲 only in Day. What stayed the same is the basis: month branch 卯 still maps to target 甲, and hidden stems are still excluded from the scan. Hidden 乙 in Mao, hidden 乙 and 癸 in Chen, and hidden 己, 癸, 辛 in Chou never enter the Yue De check, even though they feed the ten-god counts. This is the limitation worth stating once: hidden-root counts and ten-god strength cannot create the star.
The ten-god picture also shifts. Chart B's visible 辛 stems are Direct Officer (正官), and with hidden 辛 in Chou the Direct Officer sum reaches 3.3. Visible 乙 is Rob Wealth (劫财), and hidden 乙 in Mao and Chen brings Rob Wealth to 2.5. Chart A instead showed Seven Killings (七杀) at 3.0 from visible 庚 and hidden 庚, plus Indirect Resource (偏印) at 1.0. Those totals are counts, not strength scores, and neither configuration lets a ten god create Yue De; the star comes only from the month-branch target and the visible-stem scan.
Read together, the two charts show the same star with different hit slots and different ten-god totals. Yue De's traditional gentle-help symbolism is a label, not a diagnosis, and it offers no protection guarantee or prediction.
六 How common is this configuration?
Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations in this enumeration, 月德贵人 appears in 34.4722% (178,704 combinations). Each chart is counted once, regardless of repeated hits.
This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people or a birth-registry frequency. We enumerate 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 60 day pillars × 12 hour slots, respecting the derived month and hour stems. Calendar duration and actual birth timing are not population-weighted.
The month branch supplies a visible stem target. All four visible stems, including the Day Master, are checked; hidden stems do not count. The overall rate includes every Day Master, not only the Jia teaching examples. The engine result and an independent lookup implementation agree on every combination.
