Wang Shen (亡神): the Loss Star and How to Read Its Position in Bazi

一 What it is

What the Loss Star Means

Wang Shen (亡神), rendered here as the Loss Star, is a traditional shensha marker in Bazi. Its theme is inward depletion: attention slipping away, effort dissolving quietly, ground given up rather than seized. That contrasts with the Robbery Star (劫煞), which suggests external interruption. Think of a sandcastle built close to the tide line: nothing dramatic happens at any single moment, yet the structure slowly loses its shape. The Loss Star describes that kind of gradual erosion, not a sudden event. For the underlying framework, see How to Read a Bazi Chart: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners.

The ominous name is a historical label, not a literal forecast. It does not mean death, disease, memory problems, mental illness, financial loss, or danger, and it should never be read that way. It is simply a conventional term inherited from older manuals.

Its rule is year-and-day: the year branch or the day branch belongs to a triad, and that triad points to a target branch. Both bases may produce targets; merge them, then scan all four branches. A basis never hits itself, though cross-references can land on the other basis. Counts are not strength scores, and the birth time cannot be inferred from star counts.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Find the Loss Star in the Calculator

Open the homepage calculator, enter the birth place and date, then the birth hour if you know it. If the hour is unknown, select I don't know the hour; the tool will not invent one, and the hour pillar simply stays absent. Submit the form and look at the Four Pillars chart. The lower row holds the four branches, one under each stem. Read them left to right as Year, Month, Day, Hour.

Next, find the Stars in your chart panel. Locate Loss Star (亡神, Wang Shen). Its basis is the year-and-day rule: the Year branch or the Day branch belongs to a triad, and that triad names a target branch. The four triads are 子辰申 to 亥, 丑巳酉 to 申, 寅午戌 to 巳, and 卯未亥 to 寅. Both bases produce targets; the calculator merges them, then scans all four branches. A basis never hits itself, though cross-reference hits can occur.

Each hit lists its pillar position and matching branch. In the first sample chart, Year 申 targets 亥 with no hit, while Day 午 targets 巳, striking Month and Hour. In the second, Day 申 targets 亥, striking the Hour. The star changes no ten-god totals and diagnoses no one.

三 How to read it

How to Look Up Wang Shen 亡神

Start with the four pillars in order: Year, Month, Day, Hour. Wang Shen 亡神 uses a year-and-day rule, so the Year branch and the Day branch are the only two bases. Each basis belongs to a triad, and each triad points to one target branch. The lookup pairs are: 子辰申 targets 亥; 丑巳酉 targets 申; 寅午戌 targets 巳; 卯未亥 targets 寅. A basis is not a hit. The basis is the branch you read from; the hit is a target branch appearing somewhere in the chart. The method is easier to compare with Jie Sha (劫煞): the Robbery Star, Its Lookup and What It Does Not Predict.

Take the first example, 庚申 辛巳 甲午 己巳. The Year branch 申 sits in 子辰申, so its target is 亥; no 亥 appears, so that basis yields nothing. The Day branch 午 sits in 寅午戌, so its target is 巳; 巳 appears in the Month and Hour branches. Both are hits. Because the rule merges year and day targets before scanning all four branches, you scan every branch, not only the two bases. A same-basis self-hit never counts, though a cross-reference hit can occur.

In the second example, 己未 丁丑 甲申 乙亥, the Year branch 未 belongs to 卯未亥 and targets 寅; no 寅 appears. The Day branch 申 belongs to 子辰申 and targets 亥; the Hour branch 亥 is a hit. The trace shows this cleanly: basis slot, basis branch, target, then hits.

The Day Master is 甲 Jia in both charts. Jia maps to Friend, Yi to Rob Wealth, Bing to Eating God, Ding to Hurting Officer, Wu 戊 to Indirect Wealth, Ji to Direct Wealth, Geng to Seven Killings, Xin to Direct Officer, Ren to Indirect Resource, and Gui to Direct Resource. This ten-god mapping interprets stems; it does not decide the Wang Shen lookup, which reads branches. Weighted ten-god sums count visible non-day stems at 1.0 plus hidden stems at positional weights 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3. Hidden contributions follow that convention once; only the visible day stem is excluded, while hidden Jia remains Friend. Counts are not strength scores.

Treat the result as traditional interpretation, not measurement. Wang Shen's theme is inward depletion or attention slipping, contrasted with Robbery Star's external interruption. The ominous name is a historical label, not a forecast. No star changes totals or diagnoses a person, and the birth time cannot be inferred from star counts.

四 When it plays out differently

When the Loss Star Is Absent

Absence is a configuration, not a defect. Apply the lookup twice: once from the year branch, once from the day branch. If neither basis produces a target that appears in any of the four branches, 亡神 (Wang Shen) simply does not register. In the first supplied chart, the year branch 申 belongs to 子辰申 and targets 亥; no 亥 appears, so that basis yields nothing. The day branch 午 belongs to 寅午戌 and targets 巳, which appears twice. The star is present, but only through the day basis. Checking absence therefore means running both rows of the lookup table before concluding anything, because a single empty basis does not mean the star is missing from the chart. This point connects directly with Hong Luan (红鸾): the Red Phoenix Star and Its Year-Branch Lookup.

Repeated Target Slots

A target branch can occupy more than one pillar. In the first chart, 巳 sits in both the Month and Hour branches, so the Loss Star is recorded twice. The second chart shows the opposite pattern: the day branch 申 targets 亥, and 亥 appears only in the Hour. To check this, list every branch in the four pillars, then mark which ones match a target from either basis. Repetition tells you where the configuration concentrates, not how strongly it will be felt. Two hits in Month and Hour describe placement; they do not double any outcome, and they do not change the ten-god totals.

Loss Star Beside Robbery Star

The supplied material contrasts 亡神 with 劫煞 (Robbery Star): the first leans toward inward depletion or attention slipping, the second toward external interruption. In the first chart both stars land on the same Month and Hour 巳. That is an independent comparison of two related but different stars sharing a slot, not a merged reading. In the second chart the Robbery Star sits on the Day branch 申 while the Loss Star sits on the Hour branch 亥, so the two configurations occupy different positions. To compare them, run each star's lookup separately and note where the hits overlap or diverge. Overlap describes shared placement; divergence describes separate placement.

Year Basis Versus Day Basis

The rule is year-and-day, and the two bases can point to different targets. In the second chart, the year branch 未 belongs to 卯未亥 and targets 寅; no 寅 appears. The day branch 申 belongs to 子辰申 and targets 亥, which appears in the Hour. Only the day basis produces a hit. In the first chart, the year basis (申 to 亥) produces nothing while the day basis (午 to 巳) produces two hits. Checking position means tracing each basis separately, then merging the targets before scanning all four branches. A year-only reading would miss the second chart's Hour hit entirely, and a day-only reading happens to find every hit in both examples, but skips the required check of the Year basis.

Positional Distinction Within the Same Chart

Where a hit lands changes what the configuration describes. In the second chart the Loss Star occupies the Hour branch 亥, while the Robbery Star occupies the Day branch 申 and the Nobleman (天乙贵人) occupies the Year and Month branches 未 and 丑. The Hour placement is a positional fact, not a verdict about late life. In the first chart the Loss Star shares Month and Hour with the Academic Star (文昌贵人) and Robbery Star, while the General Star (将星) sits on the Day branch 午. Reading position means naming the pillar and the branch, then noting which other stars share that slot. The birth time cannot be inferred from these counts, and no star changes the ten-god totals.

Loss Star: Month 巳, Hour 巳. Basis: triad of year Shen and day Wu.

Chart A: Geng Shen, Xin Si, Jia Wu, Ji Si

Chart A shows how the Loss Star (亡神, Wang Shen) is found through a two-basis lookup. The year branch 申 Shen belongs to the 子辰申 triad, whose target is 亥 Hai; no branch in this chart is Hai, so the year basis produces no hit. The day branch 午 Wu belongs to the 寅午戌 triad, whose target is 巳 Si; that target appears twice, in the month and hour branches. The merged result is therefore a Loss Star at both month and hour, both on 巳 Si.

Reading the stems under Jia 甲 clarifies what those two Si branches carry. The month branch 巳 Si hides 丙 Bing, 庚 Geng and 戊 Wu: Eating God, Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth. The hour branch 巳 Si hides the same three stems. So the Loss Star sits on a repeated Eating God–Seven Killings–Indirect Wealth cluster, not on a single isolated element. Visible stems add contrast: the year stem 庚 Geng is Seven Killings, the month stem 辛 Xin is Direct Officer, and the hour stem 己 Ji is Direct Wealth. The day stem 甲 Jia itself is excluded from the weighted sums, and none of this chart's branches contains hidden Jia, so its Friend contribution is zero.

Three concrete relationships stand out. First, both Loss Star hits fall on 巳 Si, the same branch that also carries the Robbery Star (劫煞) and Academic Star (文昌贵人), so the Loss Star shares its seat with other markers rather than occupying a unique branch. Second, the day branch 午 Wu holds the General Star (将星), giving the day pillar a different focus from the month and hour. Third, the year branch 申 Shen carries the Travelling Horse (驿马), while the year stem 庚 Geng carries Moon Virtue (月德贵人). This chart's distinctive configuration is a double Loss Star on repeated Si branches, paired with a General Star on the day and a Travelling Horse on the year.

Loss Star: Hour 亥. Basis: triad of year Wei and day Shen.

Chart B: One Hit, Different Target

Chart B is 己未 / 丁丑 / 甲申 / 乙亥, again with Jia 甲 as Day Master. The Loss Star (亡神, Wang Shen) appears once, on the hour branch 亥 Hai. The lookup runs on two bases. The year branch 未 Wei belongs to the 卯未亥 triad, whose target is 寅 Yin; scanning year, month, day, and hour finds no 寅. The day branch 申 Shen belongs to the 子辰申 triad, whose target is 亥 Hai; that target sits in the hour. So the day basis produces the hit, while the year basis produces none. This repeats Chart A's pattern of a Year-basis miss and a Day-basis match, but the target now occurs only once.

The visible stems also differ. Chart B shows 己 Ji (Direct Wealth), 丁 Ding (Hurting Officer), and 乙 Yi (Rob Wealth) outside the day stem. Hidden stems add 辛 Xin (Direct Officer) in the month and 庚 Geng (Seven Killings) in the day branch. The weighted sums list Direct Wealth 3, Hurting Officer 1.5, Rob Wealth 1.3, and Seven Killings 1. Chart A instead carried Seven Killings 3, Eating God 2, and Direct Officer 1. These counts are tallies of stems, not strength scores, and the Loss Star adds nothing to them.

What stayed the same is the rule itself: both charts merge the year and day targets, then scan all four branches, and neither lets a basis strike itself. What changed is the Day-derived target and how many branches matched it, not which basis supplied the hits. Chart A's day triad 寅午戌 targeted 巳 Si and found it twice, in month and hour. Chart B's day triad 子辰申 targeted 亥 Hai and found it once. Chart A also recorded a year-basis miss, and Chart B repeats that pattern on its year side, so the year triad contributes no hit in either chart. The star's label does not diagnose the person; it only marks where the target branch landed.

六 How common is this configuration?

Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations in the enumeration used here, 亡神 appears in 38.4838% (199,500 combinations). A chart is counted once if it contains at least one match.

This is an equal-weight combination-space proportion, not a percentage of people and not the frequency in a birth registry. We enumerate 60 year pillars, 12 solar-month slots, 60 day pillars and 12 hour slots, with the paired stem rules respected. Calendar duration, birth timing and unknown hours are not population-weighted.

The lookup checks both the year and day branch, merges their target branches, and scans all four positions, including possible cross-reference matches between Year and Day. A basis cannot target itself for this star. This convention matters: a different lookup convention can produce a different rate. None of these labels establishes a life outcome.
