Wu Yin Day Pillar: Killings, Resource and an Earth Root

一 What it is

What Wu Yin Means

Wu Yin is the fifteenth pillar of the sixty-pillar cycle: Yang Earth (戊) sitting on the Yang Wood branch Yin (寅). Think of it as a solid hill with a young tree growing straight through it — the tree presses into the hill, yet the hill also feeds the tree's roots. That double relationship is the heart of this pillar.

Because the Day Master here is Wu Earth, the hidden stems inside Yin are read relative to Wu: Jia (甲) is Seven Killings, Bing (丙) is Indirect Resource, and Wu (戊) is Friend. The Friend stem matters because it is the same element as the Day Master — Earth — so Yin carries an actual Earth root for Wu, not merely a resource. Bing Fire is Resource, not a root; Fire produces Earth but does not share Earth's element.

What distinguishes Wu Yin from a generic "Killings and Resource" reading is that the hidden trio is not automatically a Killings-Resource structure. Jia and Bing sit together in the branch, but the Earth root also sits there, so the branch is not purely pressure-plus-support. A reader checking a Wu Yin chart should look at whether Jia is exposed on a stem, whether Bing is exposed, and whether the Wu root is reinforced elsewhere. The phase lookup for Wu at Yin is Birth (长生) — a stem-branch reference, not a strength score, health marker, or timing prediction. Note also that Wu Earth (戊) is not Wu Horse (午); the two are different characters and different roles.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Read Wu Yin in Your Chart

In your Four Pillars grid, find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the day branch. For this pillar, the stem is 戊 Wu and the branch is 寅 Yin. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside the day branch cell, where 甲 Jia, 丙 Bing and 戊 Wu sit beneath 寅. The Day Master is the stem alone; the day pillar is stem plus branch together.

There is no dedicated growth phase row in the main UI. Phase lookup uses the article tables or the full overview, where 戊 at 寅 reads as Birth. That reference is a stem-branch lookup, not a score, health marker, biological age or prediction, and it cannot create a root or forecast timing. Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase or a strength verdict; Day Master strength is a separate UI estimate.

If the hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use a calculator with accurate birthplace and time rather than inventing a universal rollover rule. To check these placements against your own grid, calculate your chart and compare the Day column directly.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

How to Read Wu Yin Step by Step

Begin with the cycle index, not the hidden stems. Wu Yin is pillar 15 in the sixty-pillar sequence, a legal pairing because stem Wu and branch Yin share yang polarity. That index tells you where the pillar sits in the cycle; it does not tell you what the branch contains. Next confirm the stem element and polarity: Wu is yang Earth, so every Ten God label must be calculated against Wu, never against Jia. Only then open the branch. This order prevents the common error of treating the hidden trio as a ready-made structure before the Day Master is fixed.

Yin hides three stems, and each carries a different relationship to Wu Earth. Jia is Yang Wood and controls Earth, so it is Seven Killings. Bing is Yang Fire and generates Earth, so it is Indirect Resource. Wu is Yang Earth matching the Day Master, so it is Friend. The weights below are fixed calculator conventions, not season-adjusted strength units. Note that Bing Fire is Resource, not a root: a root must hide the same element as the actual Day Master, Earth for Wu. Only the hidden Wu stem supplies that Earth root. The trio is therefore Killings, Resource and one Earth root, not an automatic Killings-Resource structure.

Phase is a separate lookup. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the pillar-stem phase use the identical stem-branch reference, so they are one value, not two energies. For Wu at Yin the reference is Birth (Chang Sheng). This is a lookup label, not a score, health measure, biological age or prediction, and it cannot create a root or forecast timing. Read the phase alongside the branch contents and the rest of the chart, including the month branch, which sets seasonal context. A month stem being Wealth does not make the month branch Wealth; branch and stem are read separately.

Finally, read the complete chart. In the two teaching charts both use Wu as the actual Day Master, yet the surrounding pillars differ, so the same day pillar sits in different contexts. Check each position for visible stems, hidden stems and phases, then compare. For background on the branch itself, see this guide to the Yin Tiger Earthly Branch. Keep Day Master strength as a separate estimate; do not merge it with the phase lookup or the fixed hidden weights.

To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.

甲 Seven Killings 1
丙 Indirect Resource 0.5
戊 Friend 0.3

戊寅 15 长生 Birth

四 When the reading changes

Wu Yin in a Cold Month: Root Before Resource

When 戊寅 sits in a cold month such as 子, the branch 寅 still hides 戊, so the pillar carries an Earth root regardless of season. That root shares the Day Master's element, distinguishing it from Fire Resource support. The 丙 inside 寅 is Indirect Resource: Fire that feeds Wu Earth but does not share its element. Readers often treat any hidden Fire as if it were a root, then read the whole pillar as Resource-dominant. Check the hidden stems one by one: 甲 Seven Killings, 丙 Indirect Resource, 戊 Friend. Only the 戊 qualifies as root. In a cold chart the 寅 root is present but the surrounding branches decide whether it is warmed or buried. Use how to use the 12 growth phases to see that 戊 at 寅 reads Birth, a lookup of stem against branch, not a strength score. The phase does not create the root; the hidden 戊 does.

Root and Resource Together: Reading the Trio Honestly

Because 寅 hides 甲, 丙 and 戊, the pillar can look like a packaged Killings-Resource structure. It is not automatic. The 甲 Seven Killings is the dominant hidden stem by convention weight, the 丙 Indirect Resource is secondary, and the 戊 Friend is smallest. Whether the Killings actually pressure the Day Master depends on what the other three pillars do with Wood and Fire. If the month branch is 巳 or 午, Fire is already strong and the 丙 in 寅 adds to an existing Resource theme rather than introducing one. In a Metal-season chart, examine the Earth roots and Fire Resource separately rather than ranking them from the month alone. The relationship reading has limits here: a hidden 甲 does not describe a partner, and a hidden 丙 does not describe a mother. Those are Ten God labels, not biographies. Keep the reading to observable placement: which element is hidden, at what weight, and in which branch.

Career and Reflection Limits of the Pillar

戊寅 as a day pillar is sometimes read as ambition plus learning because 甲 and 丙 appear together. That is traditional symbolism, not evidence of a person's ambition or learning habits. Visible 庚 or 辛 would add Metal Output; the presence of Output and Resource alone cannot establish their relative strength or a rate of depletion. Visible 壬 or 癸 would add Wealth; this does not establish what occupies a person's attention. None of this predicts a profession. It describes which elements are present and how they relate. Reflection on the pillar should stay at that level: what is hidden, what is visible, and what the phase lookup shows. The phase is not a health indicator, a biological age, or a forecast of when something will develop.

Two Charts, Same Day Pillar, Different Surroundings

In one teaching chart the year is 辛未, month 庚子, hour 丁巳. Here 丁 Direct Resource sits in the hour stem and 巳 hides 丙, so Fire support is visible outside the day pillar. The 寅 root still holds, but the Resource theme is reinforced by the hour. In the other chart the year is 壬午, month 乙巳, hour 丁巳. Fire is heavier, 乙 Direct Officer appears at the month stem, and the 寅 root is surrounded by strong Fire. Same 戊寅 day pillar, different balance. The comparison shows why the hidden trio should not be read in isolation. Check the month branch first, then the visible stems, then the hidden stems. The Day Master phase at the day position and the pillar-stem phase at the day position are the same lookup, not two separate energies. Do not confuse 戊 Earth with 午 Horse; they share a romanized syllable but designate a stem and a branch respectively.

Reading the Wu Yin Day Pillar in Chart A

In chart A the day pillar is 戊寅: Yang Earth sitting on Yang Wood. The branch 寅 is the day branch, so its hidden stems sit directly under the Day Master. Those hidden stems are 甲 (Seven Killings, weight 1), 丙 (Indirect Resource, weight 0.5) and 戊 (Friend, weight 0.3). Because the Day Master here is 戊, the 戊 inside 寅 is an Earth root — the same element as the Day Master, which is what a root requires. The 丙 is Fire, so it is Resource, not a root for Wu Earth. The 甲 is Wood, so it is Seven Killings, not a root either.

The label “Wu Yin” therefore does not by itself produce a Killings-Resource structure. It only tells you which stems are hidden in the day branch. Whether those hidden stems connect to the rest of the chart depends on the other positions. In chart A, the hour pillar 丁巳 adds Fire (Direct and Indirect Resource) and another hidden 戊, while the month pillar 庚子 places Eating God above Direct Wealth. So the day branch is not isolated: Resource appears again at the hour, and the Earth root is echoed there too.

A useful contrast is the phase lookup. At the day position, the Day Master phase for 戊 in 寅 is Birth (长生), and the pillar-stem phase is also Birth. That is the same lookup applied twice, not two different energies. The month position shows a different pair: 戊 in 子 is Conception, while 庚 in 子 is Death. Phase is a stem-branch reference, not a score, health measure or prediction of timing.

Reading Wu Yin in Chart B

Chart B places 戊寅 at day with 壬午, 乙巳 and 丁巳 around it. The day branch 寅 hides 甲 Seven Killings, 丙 Indirect Resource and 戊 Friend. Because 戊 is the actual Day Master, only the hidden 戊 counts as an Earth root; 丙 Fire is resource support, not a root. The three hidden stems therefore do not automatically form a Killings-Resource structure. Read them as separate observable layers: pressure, support and a same-element anchor.

The surrounding pillars matter. 乙巳 and 丁巳 both carry 巳, whose hidden 丙 Fire is Resource because Fire generates Earth. 壬午 adds 午, hiding 丁 Direct Resource and 己 Rob Wealth. The day phase and pillar-stem phase at 戊寅 are the same Birth lookup, not two different energies. Compare this with the Bing Yin Day Pillar, where the day stem differs and the Ten Gods shift accordingly.

Against Chart A, the day pillar is unchanged, but the year and month pillars differ: 辛未 and 庚子 become 壬午 and 乙巳. That changes which hidden stems and phases surround the same 戊寅 core.

Reader Check

  • Confirm the actual Day Master is 戊, not 午.
  • List hidden stems in 寅 and label each relative to 戊.
  • Check whether surrounding branches add Fire or Earth before calling the pillar a combined structure.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
