Yi Hai Day Pillar: Hidden Resource, a Wood Root and the Death Phase

Ink wash painting of a slender climbing vine beside a quiet flowing stream with a supporting woody stem.

一 What it is

The Yi Hai day pillar is a day in the 60-day stem-branch cycle where the day stem Yi 乙 (yin Wood) sits on the branch Hai 亥 (yin Water). Think of a climbing vine growing beside a rain barrel: the barrel holds water the vine can draw on, but the vine still has to grow its own stem and leaves.

What distinguishes this pillar is the mix inside Hai. Hai hides two stems: Ren 壬 (yang Water), which is Direct Resource relative to Yi, and Jia 甲 (yang Wood), which is Rob Wealth relative to Yi. The hidden Jia is a same-element Wood root, but it is not a same-stem Yi root. The Ren Water resource is a separate element, not a Wood root. In this article's teaching charts, both examples use Yi 乙 as the actual Day Master, so these Ten God labels stay relative to Yi.

Using Yang-forward and Yin-reverse lookup, Yi at Hai is Death and Jia at Hai is Birth. Death is a phase label from a stem-branch lookup table, not lifespan, illness, danger, or the end of a relationship. It is not a score, a health reading, or a biological age.

Two common misreadings are worth separating:

  • Rob Wealth is not robbery or betrayal.
  • Direct Resource is not guaranteed education, mentorship, or support.

The vine-and-water image is a metaphor for the configuration, not a promise that support arrives. Seasonal context still matters, and Day Master strength is a separate UI estimate rather than something this phase label decides.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Reading Yi Hai in the Four Pillars Grid

In your Four Pillars grid, the Day column shows the top stem and bottom branch. For this pillar the stem is 乙 Yi and the branch is 亥 Hai. The Day Master is the stem only; the day pillar is both characters together. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside the branch cell, and the article labels their Ten Gods rather than the main interface.

Hai hides 壬 Ren, Direct Resource, and 甲 Jia, Rob Wealth. Jia is same-element Wood and can act as a hidden Wood root, but it is not a same-stem Yi root. Ren Water is a separate resource element, not hidden Wood. The Death phase here is a stem-branch lookup reference, not lifespan, illness, danger, or a relationship ending.

There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main UI. Phase lookup uses the article tables or the full overview. Element balance shows weighted totals, not a phase or strength verdict; Day Master strength is a separate UI estimate. If the hour is unknown, the hour pillar is unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use the calculator with accurate birthplace and time because day-boundary handling depends on the calculation method. You can calculate your chart to see the grid layout.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

Reading Yi Hai in Layers

Begin with the cycle index: Yi Hai is pair 12 in the sixty-pillar sequence. That number is a position label, not a quality grade. Next confirm the stem element and polarity: Yi 乙 is Yin Wood, so in this article the actual Day Master is Yin Wood. Only then read the branch. Hai 亥 is the twelfth Earthly Branch and carries hidden stems, which the calculator converts into Ten Gods relative to Yi. Keeping these layers separate prevents a common error: treating the branch name, the hidden stems, and the phase as one blended verdict.

Hai hides Ren 壬 (Yang Water) at weight 1 and Jia 甲 (Yang Wood) at weight 0.5. Relative to Yi, Ren is Direct Resource and Jia is Rob Wealth. Jia is a same-element Wood root, but it is not a same-stem Yi root; the visible peer stem is a separate matter. Ren is a Water resource, not a Wood root. Rob Wealth here means a peer-like Wood influence, not robbery or betrayal, and Direct Resource means a resource relationship, not guaranteed education or support. The Hai (Pig) branch reference explains the branch's own associations.

Phase is a separate lookup. Under the yin-reverse convention used here, Yi at Hai is Death, while Jia at Hai is Birth. Death names a stage in the twelve-phase cycle, not lifespan, illness, danger, or the end of a relationship. The vine-and-water image is a teaching metaphor, not a promise of support. Seasonal context still matters: the same hidden stems sit in different climates across charts. Weights are fixed calculator conventions, not season-adjusted strength units, and Day Master strength is a separate UI estimate.

Finally, read the complete chart. Two teaching charts share this day pillar: one with year Ren Shen, month Ren Zi, hour Xin Si; another with year Ren Wu, month Yi Si, hour Xin Si. Same Yi Hai day, different surrounding stems, branches, and hidden Ten Gods. No fixed partner, career, or personality forecast follows from the pillar alone, and no financial, medical, relationship, or career decision should rest on it.

四 When the reading changes

Season and Context Change the Reading

The Yi Hai day pillar places Yi 乙 Yin Wood over Hai 亥 Yin Water. Hai hides Ren 壬 Direct Resource at weight 1 and Jia 甲 Rob Wealth at weight 0.5, so the branch carries both a Water resource and a Wood root. In the two teaching charts, the surrounding season differs sharply. Chart A stacks Ren Water in the year and month stems over Shen and Zi, giving Water 4.5 against Wood 1.5. Chart B has a Fire-heavy month and hour in Si, with Wood 2.5 and Water 2.0. The same day pillar therefore sits in very different observable conditions: one in a winter month with a higher weighted Water total, the other in a summer month with more visible Wood and Fire. Season is context, not a verdict on the person.

Root and Resource Are Not the Same Thing

Inside Hai, Jia is a same-element Wood root for Yi, but it is not a same-stem Yi root. Ren is a separate Water resource, not Wood. That distinction matters when reading the day pillar: the hidden Jia supports the Wood element, while Ren supports through the resource relationship. Neither guarantees an outcome. Rob Wealth is not robbery or betrayal, and Direct Resource is not guaranteed education or support. In Chart A, the heavy Water and visible Ren stems make the resource theme prominent, but the hidden Jia root is still only weight 0.5. In Chart B, the visible Yi in the month is a peer stem, not a hidden Wood root, and the Fire branches add a different layer. The calculator weights are fixed conventions, not season-adjusted strength units; Day Master strength is a separate UI estimate.

Death Phase and Relationship Reading Limits

Using Yang-forward and Yin-reverse lookup, Yi at Hai is Death and Jia at Hai is Birth. This is a stem-branch lookup, not a score, health measure, biological age or prediction. The Death (Si) growth phase label describes a phase position, not lifespan, illness, danger or the end of a relationship. A day pillar alone cannot forecast a fixed partner, marriage timing or relationship outcome. The hidden Jia root and Ren resource describe structural features of the chart, not promises about who someone will meet or how a bond will unfold. Reading relationship potential from one pillar would overreach the method.

Career and Reflection Limits

Career readings from Yi Hai also have limits. The hidden Ren Direct Resource and Jia Rob Wealth may be discussed as themes, but they do not assign a profession, income level or success timeline. Chart A's Water-heavy pattern and Chart B's Fire-and-Wood pattern show how surrounding pillars shift emphasis, yet neither chart predicts a job title. The vine-and-water metaphor is imagery, not a promise of support. Reflection on this day pillar should stay with what is observable: the hidden stems, their weights, the phase lookup and the seasonal setting. No financial, medical, relationship or career decision should be based on this chart.

Chart A: Yi Hai in the Day Position

In chart A, the day pillar is 乙亥: Yi 乙 sits on Hai 亥. Because the day stem is Yi, the whole chart is read with Yi as the actual Day Master. Hai is a Water branch, and its hidden stems are Ren 壬 (Direct Resource) at weight 1 and Jia 甲 (Rob Wealth) at weight 0.5. The visible year and month stems are also Ren, so Resource appears openly as well as inside the branch.

The hidden Jia is a same-element Wood root for Yi, but not a same-stem Yi root. A root can share the Day Master's element without sharing its exact stem; Hai therefore supplies Yi with a Wood root through Jia. Likewise, Ren Water is a Resource, not a Wood root at all. Calling Hai a "hidden resource and wood root" therefore describes two different hidden stems, not one combined support.

Using the yin-reverse phase convention, Yi reaches Death (Si 死) at Hai, while Jia reaches Birth there. Death is a phase label from the stem-branch lookup, not lifespan, illness, danger or a relationship ending. It is not a score, health measure, biological age or prediction. The same lookup gives the day pillar's stem phase as Death too, but that is a reference point, not a verdict on the chart.

Two contrasts keep the reading honest. First, the hidden Jia is Rob Wealth, which is not robbery or betrayal; it is a same-element peer influence. Second, the hidden Ren is Direct Resource, which does not guarantee education, support or patronage. The vine-and-water image is a metaphor for position, not a promise that support arrives. Seasonal context and the separate Day Master strength estimate belong to other layers, not to this label alone.

Weighted element totals: Wood 2.5, Fire 3, Earth 1.1, Metal 2, Water 2.

Chart B: Yi Hai With a Wood Peer and Fire Branches

Chart B keeps the same day pillar, 乙亥, so the actual Day Master is still Yi 乙 Yin Wood. What changes is the surrounding chart: year 壬午, month 乙巳, hour 辛巳. Compared with Chart A, the month stem shifts from 壬 to 乙, the year branch from 申 to 午, and the month branch from 子 to 巳. The day pillar itself is unchanged, so the hidden stems remain 壬 Direct Resource at weight 1 and 甲 Rob Wealth at weight 0.5.

The hidden 甲 is same-element Wood, so it can act as a Wood root, but it is not a same-stem Yi root. The hidden 壬 is a Water resource, separate from that Wood root. In Chart B, the visible month stem 乙 is a Friend, a peer stem rather than a hidden Wood root. The element totals also differ: Wood rises to 2.5 and Water falls to 2, while Fire reaches 3. Those are fixed calculator weights, not season-adjusted strength units.

For the day stem phase, 乙 at 亥 is Death under the Yin-reverse convention used here. This is a stem-branch lookup reference, not lifespan, illness, danger, or a relationship ending. The same lookup gives 甲 at 亥 as Birth, which is why the two phases differ despite sharing the branch. To see how these labels fit a full chart, review how to read a Bazi chart.

Reader Check

  • Confirm the day pillar is 乙亥 before applying any of these labels.
  • List the other three pillars and note which ones changed from Chart A.
  • Separate the hidden 甲 Wood root from the hidden 壬 Water resource.
  • Treat 乙 in the month as a visible peer stem, not a hidden root.
  • Read Death as a phase label only, then check the separate Day Master strength estimate in the UI.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
