Yi Wei Day Pillar: Hidden Wealth, Output and a Wood Root

一 What it is

What the Yi Wei Day Pillar Is

The Yi Wei Day Pillar is the 32nd stem-branch pair, a Yin Wood Day Master (乙) sitting on the Earth branch Wei (未). Think of a slender vine growing over a compost heap: the heap is not the vine, yet it feeds and anchors it. That is the core image here — a Wood stem with a hidden Wood root in an Earth branch. The root comes from hidden Yi, not from Earth producing Wood.

What distinguishes Yi Wei is the hidden mix inside Wei. It conceals Ji (己) as Indirect Wealth, Ding (丁) as Eating God, and Yi (乙) as Friend. So the branch carries wealth, output, and a same-element root for Yi at once. That same-stem Yi root matters: the Day Master finds a Wood foothold even though the branch itself is Earth. Wei holds no hidden Water, so Yi's Resource does not come from this branch.

The phase reference is a stem-branch lookup, not a score. Yi at Wei is Gestation (养), a stored, still-forming stage rather than a peak. Wei is often called a storage branch, but storage here is not a wealth vault or a pregnancy signal; it is a traditional branch category, distinct from Yi’s Gestation phase.

Two teaching charts share this day pillar. In one, a Hai branch adds a Jia same-element root and a Water Resource. In the other, a visible Yi in the month stem is a peer, not a hidden root. Visible peers and hidden roots are different things, and the Ten Gods stay relative to Yi throughout.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Where to Find Yi Wei in Your Chart

In your Four Pillars grid, find the column labeled Day: the top character is the Day stem, and the bottom character is the Day branch. When that pair reads 乙未, you have a Yi Wei day pillar. The Day Master is the stem alone, 乙; the day pillar is both characters together, and the branch 未 carries the hidden stems shown as small characters beneath it. Those small characters are the branch's stored stems, and the article labels their Ten Gods rather than the main grid doing so.

To see this layout with your own pillars, calculate your chart and read the Day column first. There is no dedicated growth phase row in the main interface; the 养 (Gestation) reference for 乙 at 未 comes from the phase tables in this article or the full overview. Element balance appears as weighted totals, which are fixed calculator conventions rather than a phase or a strength verdict, and Day Master strength is a separate estimate. If your hour is unknown, treat the hour pillar as unconfirmed. Near a day boundary, use the calculator with an accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule.

Read the Day column: top character = Day Master; top + bottom characters = day pillar. Keep the full four-column chart for context.

三 How to read it

How to Read Yi Wei Step by Step

Start with the cycle index, because it fixes the pillar before any interpretation begins. 乙未 is the thirty-second position in the sixty-pillar sequence, so the stem and branch are already paired by the calendar. Next read the stem on its own: 乙 is Yin Wood, the Day Master in both teaching charts. Only after that should you open the branch and assign hidden Ten Gods relative to 乙. This order matters because the same branch means different things under a different day stem.

Inside 未, the calculator convention hides 己, 丁 and 乙. Relative to 乙, 己 is Indirect Wealth, 丁 is Eating God, and 乙 is Friend. The first table below keeps those labels and fixed weights together. These weights are calculator conventions, not season-adjusted strength units, and they do not measure how strong the Day Master is. That strength question belongs to a separate UI estimate. Notice also what is absent: 未 hides no Water, so it supplies no Resource for 乙. The storage image here is simply a container of three stems, not a wealth vault and not a pregnancy symbol.

Then read the phase. For 乙 sitting on 未, the stem-branch lookup gives Gestation, 养. This is a reference position in the twelve-phase cycle, not a score, health reading, biological age or prediction. The second table places the cycle index, the day pillar and that phase side by side. Keep the phase separate from the hidden stems: 未 can hold a Wood root for 乙 while the phase remains Gestation. The root works because 乙 appears inside 未 and shares the Day Master's element, Wood. Same stem is not mandatory for a root; hiding the same element is what counts.

Finally, read the complete chart. In chart A, 亥 adds 甲, a same-element Wood root, and 壬, a Water Resource for 乙. In chart B, the visible 乙 in the month stem is a peer, not a hidden root, and it should not be merged with the 乙 inside 未. Resource is Water for 乙, while for a Bing Day Master it would be Wood, so never carry one day stem's Ten God labels into another. A legal cycle pairing needs matching stem and branch polarity, but a phase lookup reference does not have to be a legal single pillar. For the branch itself, see wei goat earthly branch.

四 When the reading changes

What the Yi Wei Day Pillar Holds

乙未 is the thirty-second pillar in the sixty-cycle, and its branch carries three hidden stems: 己 Indirect Wealth, 丁 Eating God, and 乙 Friend. Because the day stem is 乙, the 乙 inside 未 is a same-element root — Wood supporting Wood — even though the branch itself is Earth. That is an important structural distinction: a root is defined by the element it hides matching the Day Master's element, not by the branch's own element. 未 hides no Water, so it offers no Resource to 乙; any Water in a chart must come from elsewhere. The phase reference for 乙 at 未 is Gestation, part of the gestation yang growth phase lookup. Treat 未’s traditional Wood-storage designation as separate from this phase lookup, not as a wealth vault or a pregnancy signal.

How the Hidden Stems Read in Context

In chart A (壬申 辛亥 乙未 辛巳), the month is 亥, which hides 壬 Direct Resource and 甲 Rob Wealth. That 甲 is a same-element Wood root for 乙, and 亥's Water is a genuine Resource — something 未 itself cannot supply. So this chart's Wood support comes from two different places: a peer root in 未 and a resource-plus-root combination in 亥. The 己 Indirect Wealth and 丁 Eating God in 未 sit alongside heavy Metal from 辛 and 申, so the output and wealth signals are embedded in a structure where Officer pressure is prominent. Reading relationships from this alone would overreach; the pillar shows tendencies in how support and expression are arranged, not outcomes.

In chart B (壬午 乙巳 乙未 辛巳), the month stem 乙 is a visible Friend — a peer, not a hidden root. The 未 branch still hides its own 乙, so the Day Master has a root there, but the visible 乙 in the month is a separate matter: it is a stem-level peer that can share or compete for the same Wood role. Fire is strong here through 巳 and 午, reinforcing the Fire output representation that includes 丁 Eating God, while Water is thin — only 壬 in the year. The contrast with chart A is instructive: same day pillar, very different surrounding support.

Where the Phase Reference Fits

The Gestation label comes from a stem-branch lookup table, not from a strength score, health reading, or biological age. It describes where 乙 sits relative to 未 in the conventional twelve-stage sequence. Day Master strength is a separate estimate shown in the calculator's interface, and it weighs the whole chart rather than this single lookup. Keeping the two distinct prevents the phase label from being read as a verdict on the person.

What This Pillar Does and Does Not Tell You

乙未 shows a Day Master with a same-element root in its own branch, hidden wealth and output, and no hidden resource. That combination shapes how support, expression, and material themes tend to be arranged — but it does not determine career paths, relationships, or finances. Use it as one structural layer among many, and let the full chart, not this pillar alone, carry the weight of any reflection.

What the Yi Wei Day Pillar Holds

In chart A, 乙未 sits in the day position, so the branch belongs to the Day Master's own pillar rather than to a parent, sibling, or child palace. That placement matters: Wei's hidden stems describe what the Day Master carries directly, not what surrounds it. The branch hides 己 Indirect Wealth at full weight, 丁 Eating God at half, and 乙 Friend at three-tenths. The 乙 root is the same stem as the Day Master, but the rule is broader: a root must hide the same element as the actual Day Master. Wood for Yi, Fire for Bing. Same stem is convenient, not mandatory.

Wei is Earth, yet it stores a Wood root. That is the useful tension. The branch's surface element does not erase the hidden stem's element, and the hidden 乙 gives Yi a same-element anchor inside a Wealth-dominant branch. The 己 and 丁 add Wealth and Output respectively, so the pillar combines same-element rooting with productive and acquisitive layers.

Two contrasts sharpen the reading. First, Wei hides no Water, so it cannot serve as Yi's Resource through hidden stems; in chart A that Water arrives from 壬申 and 辛亥 instead. Second, the visible 乙 in chart B is a peer, not a hidden root. Visible peers and hidden roots are different structural roles even when the stem matches.

The Gestation phase is a stem-branch lookup, not a strength score, health marker, or prediction. It does not convert Wei into a wealth vault or a pregnancy symbol. The storage metaphor does not change the hidden-stem list or establish a financial outcome.

Chart B: Yi Wei in a Visible-Wood-Peer, Fire-Led Context

Chart B places the same 乙未 day pillar inside a very different surround: 壬午 year, 乙巳 month, 辛巳 hour. The day pillar itself is unchanged — 乙 sits on 未, an Earth branch that hides 己 Indirect Wealth, 丁 Eating God, and 乙 Friend. Because 未 hides 乙, the Day Master keeps a same-stem Wood root even though the branch is Earth. That root is real but modest, and 未 stores these influences rather than acting as a wealth vault or a pregnancy symbol.

What changes is the field around it. The month pillar is now 乙巳, so a visible 乙 Friend stands beside the Day Master, while 巳 hides 丙 Hurting Officer, 庚 Direct Officer, and 戊 Direct Wealth. The year branch 午 adds 丁 Eating God and 己 Indirect Wealth, intensifying output and wealth themes. Unlike chart A, chart B has no 亥, so it lacks that additional 甲 same-element root and Water resource. Water appears only through the year stem 壬, leaving fewer Resource locations than in A. Fire is far more prominent here, which changes how the hidden 丁 Eating God expresses.

For readers comparing charts, check the branches around the day pillar first. If 亥 or another Water branch is present, Yi gains resource depth; if 巳 and 午 dominate, output and wealth surface more strongly. A useful comparison is the yi chou day pillar, where the branch hides different Ten Gods. Then verify whether any visible 乙 or hidden 乙 supports the Day Master, and whether 未 remains the only Wood root. That check keeps the reading tied to the actual pillars rather than to the day pillar alone.

六 What the counts mean

The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
