一 What it is
Gestation (Yang 养) is the twelfth phase in the Twelve Growth Phases, the stage of quiet nourishment that follows Conception and precedes the return to Birth. Think of a seedbed in late winter: nothing visible is happening above the soil, yet the stored conditions are being gathered for the next sprout. The character 养 means "to nourish" or "to raise"; it is not the polarity term 阳 (yang), and it does not describe pregnancy, fertility, childbearing, or biological development.
What Distinguishes Gestation
Gestation is a cycle metaphor for a resting, receiving position, not a claim that the branch generates the day master. For a Jia day master, Gestation appears at the Xu branch. Xu hides Wu (Indirect Wealth, weight 1), Xin (Direct Officer, weight 0.5), and Ding (Hurting Officer, weight 0.3). It contains no Wood root and no Water resource, so the phase name does not imply that Xu feeds Jia with Wood or Water.
Reference dependence matters. In example A (壬申 庚戌 甲子 己巳), Gestation sits in the month pillar under Geng, a Seven Killings stem. In example B (壬午 癸卯 甲申 甲戌), Gestation sits in the hour pillar under a Jia Friend stem. The Jia-at-Xu lookup stays the same in both positions. A separate lookup using the visible month stem Geng gives Decline at Xu, while the hour stem Jia in B gives Gestation.
Direction and Lookup
- Yang stems count forward; Yin stems count in reverse.
- Earth stems follow the Fire sequence rather than a separate one.
- Jia reaches Gestation at Xu; Yi reaches it at Wei; Bing and Wu at Chou; Ding and Ji at Xu; Geng at Chen; Xin at Chou; Ren at Wei; Gui at Chen.
This is a stem-branch lookup convention, not a score, health marker, biological age, or prediction.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Reading Gestation in Your Chart
In the Four Pillars grid, find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the day branch. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside each branch. There is no dedicated growth-phase row in the main interface, so phase lookup relies on reference tables like the one below. For example, with a Jia Day Master, Gestation appears when the branch is Xu. In example A the month pillar is Geng Xu, so Jia reaches Gestation there; in example B the hour pillar is Jia Xu, so Gestation falls in the hour. These are separate lookups, not one combined reading.
Xu hides Wu (Indirect Wealth), Xin (Direct Officer), and Ding (Hurting Officer). It contains no Wood root and no Water resource, so Gestation here is a Twelve Growth Phases cycle position, not a claim that Xu generates Wood. Yin stems run in reverse, and Earth follows Fire. Reference dependence matters: the phase is fixed by the Day Master stem and the branch, while the other stem in that pillar is read separately.
Element balance totals are weighted summaries, not a phase or strength verdict. If the hour is unknown, treat it as unconfirmed; near a day boundary, use a calculator with an accurate birthplace and time rather than assuming a universal rollover rule. To calculate your chart, enter confirmed birth data first.
三 How to read it
Reading Gestation as a Phase, Not a Life Event
Begin with the layer of the Twelve Growth Phases itself. Gestation is the twelfth phase, following Conception and returning toward Birth, so it reads as a quiet, storing interval rather than a beginning. The Chinese character 养 means nourishing or rearing; it is not the polarity term 阳. Keep that distinction firm, because the phase name describes a position on a cycle, not pregnancy, fertility, childbearing, or biological development. For a Jia day master, the phase lookup is stem-and-branch: Jia meets Gestation at Xu. That single match is the whole phase claim. It does not say Xu produces Wood, and it does not measure health, age, or outcome.
Separating Stem, Hidden Stems, and Ten Gods
Next, separate the stem layer from the branch layer. In example A the month stem is Geng and the month branch is Xu; in example B the hour stem is Jia and the hour branch is Xu. Both branches carry the same hidden stems: Wu (Indirect Wealth, weight 1), Xin (Direct Officer, weight .5), and Ding (Hurting Officer, weight .3), all read relative to Jia. Notice what is absent: Xu hides no Wood root and no Water resource. A visible peer stem such as Jia in example B is not a hidden Wood root, and a Water stem elsewhere is not hidden inside Xu. So the phase label and the hidden Ten Gods answer different questions and should be recorded in different columns.
A Repeatable Four-Step Method
Use the same order every time so results stay comparable.
- Step 1 — Cycle index: locate Gestation as phase 12, between Conception and Birth.
- Step 2 — Stem and polarity: identify the day master and its element; apply Yang forward, Yin reverse, with Earth following Fire.
- Step 3 — Hidden Ten Gods: list the branch's hidden stems and their Ten Gods relative to the day master, without upgrading them into roots they are not.
- Step 4 — Phase and chart: record the phase for the position you are studying, then read it inside the complete chart rather than alone.
This sequence keeps the cycle index, the stem element, the hidden Ten Gods, and the full chart from collapsing into one another. For background on the sequence, see what are the 12 growth phases.
Reference Dependence and Table Scope
Gestation is reference-dependent: it appears only when a specific stem meets a specific branch, which is why Jia at Xu qualifies while Jia at Zi (Bath) or Jia at Shen (Extinction) does not. In example A the month pillar is the Gestation match; in example B the hour pillar is. The same branch can therefore carry Gestation for one stem and a different phase for another, and changing the reference stem can move the Gestation match to another branch. The ten-row table below lists only the Gestation branch for each reference stem. It is not the sixty-pillar cycle or the full twelve-phase matrix; a nonmatching branch simply does not give Gestation for that stem.
| Reference stem | Gestation branch | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 | 戌 | forward |
| 乙 | 未 | reverse |
| 丙 | 丑 | forward |
| 丁 | 戌 | reverse |
| 戊 | 丑 | forward |
| 己 | 戌 | reverse |
| 庚 | 辰 | forward |
| 辛 | 丑 | reverse |
| 壬 | 未 | forward |
| 癸 | 辰 | reverse |
四 When the reading changes
Gestation in the Month Pillar: Jia on Xu
When the month branch is Xu, Jia reaches Gestation (Yang 养), the twelfth phase, where the cycle rests after Conception and before Birth returns. In example A, 壬申 庚戌 甲子 己巳, the month stem is Geng, a Seven Killings, and Xu hides Wu Indirect Wealth, Xin Direct Officer, and Ding Hurting Officer. Xu contains no Wood and no Water, so the day master has neither a hidden root nor a resource inside that branch. Water appears in the visible year stem Ren and as hidden Gui Direct Resource inside the day branch Zi; neither is a Wood root. Reading the month as "nourishing Jia" would overreach: the phase is a position in the twelve-stage cycle, not a claim that Xu generates Wood. Relationship readings from Xu's hidden Xin Direct Officer describe a structural link, not a guarantee about a partner. Career reflection can note the Officer and Wealth signals, but the chart does not license a decision about a job or a person.
Gestation in the Hour Pillar: Jia on Xu
In example B, 壬午 癸卯 甲申 甲戌, the hour branch is Xu and the hour stem is Jia, so both the day master and the hour stem sit in Gestation. The month branch Mao supplies a hidden Wood root through Yi Rob Wealth, and the month stem Gui is a Direct Resource, so this chart's support is observable in the month, not inside Xu. The hour's Xu still hides only Wu, Xin, and Ding. Because the hour often represents later output or the next generation, a reader might treat Gestation there as a promise of future support, but the branch itself supplies no Wood or Water. The peer stem Jia in the hour is a visible Friend, not a hidden Wood root. Any relationship or career reading must stay at the level of structural signals and cannot be turned into a forecast about outcomes.
Same Stem, Different Branch: Jia on Zi Versus Jia on Xu
Jia on Zi is Bath, while Jia on Xu is Gestation. The stem is identical, but the branch changes the phase, which shows that the lookup is a stem-branch pairing rather than a property of Jia alone. Zi hides Gui Direct Resource, giving Jia a Water resource in that branch; Xu hides Wu, Xin, and Ding, giving no Wood root and no Water resource. A reader who sees Jia and assumes the same nourishment in both branches would miss the actual hidden stems. The phase name also differs from the stem name: Yang 养 here means nourishing as a cycle stage, not the Yang 阳 polarity, and it is not a statement about pregnancy or fertility. Comparing the two branches is a comparison of lookup results, not a health or biological measure.
Phase Lookups Are Not the Sixty-Pillar List
Gestation is a reference-stem-to-branch lookup: Jia matches Xu, Yi matches Wei, Bing and Wu match Chou, Ding and Ji match Xu, Geng matches Chen, Xin matches Chou, Ren matches Wei, and Gui matches Chen. Some of these reference pairs are not legal single pillars: for example, Bing can be read against a Chou branch elsewhere in a chart, but 丙丑 is not in the sixty-pillar cycle. Yang stems move forward and yin stems reverse, while Earth follows Fire, so Wu and Ji share the Fire stems' branches. A pairing outside this lookup, such as Jia on Wei, is not Gestation under the convention used here; Jia on Wei is Grave. The same stem can therefore appear in different pillar positions with different phases, and moving a branch from month to hour does not change its hidden stems. The conception tai growth phase article places Gestation after Conception in the sequence, which helps explain why the phase is read as a resting, nourishing position rather than an active peak. These are reference conventions, not predictions, and they should not be used to make financial, medical, relationship, or career decisions.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Jia Wood Day Master; several other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 庚 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 申 | 戌 | 子 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Indirect Resource | Seven Killings | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Hidden stems | 庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
癸 Direct Resource (1) | 丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 绝 Extinction | 养 Gestation | 沐浴 Bath | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 长生 Birth | 衰 Decline | 沐浴 Bath | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 1.3, Earth 2.6, Metal 3, Water 2.5.
In chart A, the day master is 甲 (Jia) and the month branch is 戌 (Xu). The month pillar is 庚戌, so the day master's phase at the month position is Gestation (Yang 养). This is the only Gestation match in the four pillars. The year branch 申 places Jia at Extinction, the day branch 子 at Bath, and the hour branch 巳 at Sickness. Gestation therefore describes the month position specifically, not the whole chart.
The label "Gestation" is a phase name in the twelve-stage cycle, not a statement about pregnancy, fertility, or biological development. Yang 养 here means nourishing or being nourished within the cycle metaphor. It does not mean the yang 阳 polarity. The phase is read from the stem-branch lookup: Jia at Xu is Gestation, and the same lookup gives Yi at Wei, Bing at Chou, Ding at Xu, and so on. Yin stems reverse; Earth follows Fire. This is a reference convention, not a universal claim.
Xu hides 戊 Indirect Wealth (weight 1), 辛 Direct Officer (0.5), and 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3). None of these hidden stems is Wood, so Xu provides no hidden Wood root for Jia. Xu also contains no Water, so it is not a hidden Water resource. The visible month stem 庚 is Seven Killings, and the visible year stem 壬 is Indirect Resource, but neither is a hidden Wood root inside Xu. The phase name does not create a Wood root, and it does not mean Xu generates Wood.
Two useful contrasts clarify the limit. First, the day branch 子 hides 癸 Direct Resource, a Water resource, but that resource sits in the day position, not in Xu. Second, the hour stem 己 is Direct Wealth, and the hour branch 巳 hides 丙 Eating God, 庚 Seven Killings, and 戊 Indirect Wealth; none of these is Wood either. So Gestation at the month position marks a phase relationship between Jia and Xu, while the actual hidden stems in Xu remain Wealth, Officer, and Hurting Officer. The label alone cannot supply a Wood root, a Water resource, or a visible peer stem.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 癸 | 甲 | 甲 |
| Branch | 午 | 卯 | 申 | 戌 |
| Ten God | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource | Day Master | Friend |
| Hidden stems | 丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
乙 Rob Wealth (1) | 庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 死 Death | 帝旺 Emperor | 绝 Extinction | 养 Gestation |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 长生 Birth | 绝 Extinction | 养 Gestation |
Weighted element totals: Wood 3, Fire 1.3, Earth 1.8, Metal 1.5, Water 2.5.
In chart B, the hour pillar 甲戌 places a Jia Day Master on Xu, the branch that maps to Gestation (Yang 养) for Jia. This is a stem-branch lookup, not a biological stage. Xu hides Wu Indirect Wealth 1, Xin Direct Officer 0.5, and Ding Hurting Officer 0.3. It contains no Wood root and no Water resource, so Gestation here is a cycle metaphor for nourishment, not a claim that Xu generates Wood. The xu dog earthly branch is the reference point.
Chart A also has Jia on Xu, but in the month pillar 庚戌. Its surrounding pillars differ: year 壬申, day 甲子, hour 己巳. Chart B changes those to year 壬午, month 癸卯, day 甲申. The Gestation match moves from month to hour, so the phase sits in a different position even though the stem-branch pair is identical.
Reference dependence is visible in the exact stems. In A, the month stem is Geng Seven Killings and the hour stem is Ji Direct Wealth. In B, the month stem is Gui Direct Resource and the hour stem is Jia Friend. The same Jia-on-Xu lookup therefore appears beside different Ten Gods and different hidden-weight profiles.
Yin stems reverse and Earth follows Fire, so the ten-row lookup is only the Gestation matches, not the full matrix. For Jia, only Xu qualifies.
Reader check
- Confirm the day master is Jia.
- Find Xu in the chart.
- Check whether Xu is month or hour.
- Read the visible stem on that pillar.
- List hidden stems: Wu, Xin, Ding.
- Do not treat Xu as a Wood root or Water resource.
六 What the counts mean
Each of ten reference stems has one Gestation match among twelve branches: ten of 120 lookup cells. This is a lookup-grid count, not the share of people with this phase.
