Every cycle needs its enforcer. While the Tiger kicks open the door to spring and the Horse blazes through summer's peak, it is the Monkey — Shen (申) — that swings the blade of autumn for the first time. Summer's heat breaks here. The harvest begins here. And tucked inside this single character is not just the sharpness of Metal, but the quiet birth of Water and a residue of Earth, making Shen one of the most forceful and layered branches in the twelve-branch cycle.

一 What Shen (申) Actually Is
Shen 申 is the ninth of the twelve [[Earthly Branches]], and it carries Yang Metal as its native element. Its animal symbol is the Monkey, and its polarity is [[Yang]] — active, outward, cutting. For the underlying framework, see Earthly Branches in Bazi: The Twelve Characters and Their Hidden Stems.
What gives Shen its depth is the three [[Hidden Stems]] packed inside it:
| Hidden Stem | Element | Role | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 庚 Gēng (Yang Metal) | Metal | Main Qi (本气) | 1.0 |
| 壬 Rén (Yang Water) | Water | Middle Qi (中气) | 0.5 |
| 戊 Wù (Yang Earth) | Earth | Residual Qi (余气) | 0.3 |
Three elements in one branch, all of them yang. The main qi is 庚 Gēng — the hardest Metal stem, the raw ore and the unsheathed blade. But the middle qi, 壬 Rén Water, is what makes Shen special in the classical system. Water reaches its long-life stage (长生) in Shen, meaning this is where Water is born. Metal carries Water inside itself the way a cold surface draws condensation from thin air — the first drops of the season that will eventually freeze the world. The residual qi, 戊 Wù Earth, is the mountain that produced the ore — the mother element that gave Metal its substance.
Seasonally, Shen governs the seventh solar month, running from 立秋 (Lìqiū, Start of Autumn) to 白露 (Báilù, White Dew) — roughly early August to early September. This is the pivot point of the year: summer yields to autumn, growth gives way to harvest, and the energy shifts from expansion to contraction. The Monkey hour runs from 15:00 to 17:00, the late afternoon when the sun begins its descent and the day's work turns toward settlement.
The classical image: autumn's first Metal — the ax begins to swing, leaves start to turn. Shen carries the sharpness and decisiveness of Metal at its debut, plus the first stirrings of Water (壬) being born from Metal. All three hidden stems are yang — Shen is one of the most forceful branches in the entire cycle.
二 Where to Find Shen in Your Chart
Your [[Four Pillars]] chart is a grid of four columns — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — each with a [[Heavenly Stem]] on top and an Earthly Branch on the bottom. Shen can appear in the branch row of any of those four positions.
- Shen as year branch means you were born in a Monkey year (2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968 …).
- Shen as month branch means you were born during the seventh solar month — the opening stretch of autumn, between Lìqiū and Báilù. Because this is the month that flips the year from growth to harvest, a Shen month branch carries a strong association with turning points and decisive action.
- Shen as day branch is determined by the sixty-pillar [[Jiazi]] cycle and cannot be guessed from the calendar date alone. It repeats every twelve days.
- Shen as hour branch means you were born between 15:00 and 17:00 in [[true solar time]] (adjusted for your birth longitude, not clock time).
三 How to Read Shen
With three hidden stems, Shen never plays a single role in a chart. It delivers Metal, Water, and Earth simultaneously, each at a different weight. The practical question is always: how do those three hidden stems relate to your [[Day Master]]? The method is easier to compare with Wei (未) Earthly Branch: the Goat, Yin Earth, and What It Means in Your Bazi Chart.
The hidden stems and your Day Master
The main qi, 庚 (Gēng Metal), is the loudest voice inside Shen. This is raw, yang Metal — the ax, the sword, the unrefined ore. At weight 1.0, it arrives with full force and dominates the branch's character.
The middle qi, 壬 (Rén Water), means Shen is never dry Metal. Even at the start of autumn, this branch carries the seed of Water being born. At weight 0.5, Water is present but secondary — enough to matter in the tally, not enough to dominate.
The residual qi, 戊 (Wù Earth), adds a grounding trace at weight 0.3. Earth is Metal's mother in the production cycle (Earth produces Metal), so Shen contains the source that feeds its own main element — a branch that carries its own supply line.
Here is how those three stems translate into [[Ten Gods]] for a few common Day Masters:
| Day Master | 庚 becomes… | 壬 becomes… | 戊 becomes… |
|---|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jiǎ (Yang Wood) | [[Seven Killings]] | [[Indirect Resource]] | [[Indirect Wealth]] |
| 丙 Bǐng (Yang Fire) | Indirect Wealth | Seven Killings | [[Eating God]] |
| 戊 Wù (Yang Earth) | Eating God | Indirect Wealth | Friend |
| 庚 Gēng (Yang Metal) | Friend | Eating God | Indirect Resource |
| 壬 Rén (Yang Water) | Indirect Resource | Friend | Seven Killings |
Because all three hidden stems are yang, they always land on the same-polarity side of the ten god pairs for a yang Day Master (Friend, Eating God, Indirect Wealth, Seven Killings, Indirect Resource) and on the opposite-polarity side for a yin Day Master ([[Rob Wealth]], [[Hurting Officer]], [[Direct Wealth]], [[Direct Officer]], [[Direct Resource]]).
For the 甲 (Jiǎ) Wood Day Master
Shen is the primary threat branch for Wood Day Masters. Its main qi 庚 (Yang Metal) is Seven Killings — the element that directly attacks Wood with full force, same polarity, no gentleness. Metal chops Wood. That is the headline.
But read deeper and the picture gets more interesting. The middle qi 壬 (Yang Water) is Indirect Resource — the element that nourishes Wood. Water feeds trees. So Shen's attack comes bundled with support: the killer is also a teacher, the blade that prunes the tree also irrigates it. This duality — pressure and nourishment arriving in the same branch — is one of Shen's most distinctive signatures for Wood Day Masters.
The residual qi 戊 (Yang Earth) is Indirect Wealth — the element Wood controls for profit. Even the branch that threatens Wood hands it a wealth opportunity at the margins.
Pillar position matters
- Year pillar — Ancestry, early life, and the family's outward energy. Shen in the year branch often describes a family with sharpness and authority — people who made decisive, sometimes ruthless, choices.
- Month pillar — Career and social standing. Shen as month branch means you were born in the seventh solar month, the start of autumn. This is a seasonally potent placement: Metal is freshly in season, Water is being born, and the energy is all about cutting through excess to find what works.
- Day pillar — Self and spouse. The day branch is the [[Spouse Palace]], so Shen here colours the marriage dynamic with intelligence, sharpness, and a partner who is capable but potentially combative.
- Hour pillar — Children, aspirations, and the final chapter of life. Shen in the hour branch points toward a productive late life and children with a resourceful, strategic streak.
Wherever Shen appears, it brings a cutting energy. This is the branch of decisive action — the first month of autumn, the late afternoon of the day, the moment when growth gives way to harvest. A chart with Shen in it is rarely soft.
四 When Shen Plays Out Differently
A branch never operates alone. Shen's behaviour shifts depending on which other branches sit nearby in the chart or arrive through [[Luck Pillars]] and annual pillars. This point connects directly with You (酉) Earthly Branch: the Rooster, Yin Metal, and What It Means in Your Bazi Chart.
1. Si-Shen (巳申) Six Harmony → transforms toward Water
When Shen meets [[Si]] (Snake, Fire), the two form a [[Six Harmony]] pair that pulls toward Water. This combination is counterintuitive at first glance — Fire and Metal are antagonists in the control cycle — but the classical system says their harmony redirects energy into Water. Shen's hidden 壬 (Water at its birth stage) provides the seed, and the combination nurtures it. For a 甲 Day Master, this transforms a branch that carries both threat (庚 Seven Killings) and support (壬 Indirect Resource) into something more uniformly nourishing, as the Water element strengthens.
2. Shen-Zi-Chen (申子辰) Three Harmony → Water Bureau
Shen joins [[Zi]] (Rat) and [[Chen]] (Dragon) to form the [[Three Harmony]] Water frame. This is where Shen's hidden 壬 comes fully alive. In the twelve-stage growth cycle, Water is born in Shen (长生), peaks in Zi (帝旺), and is stored in Chen (墓库). When all three branches appear together, Water energy surges across the chart. Shen provides the birth, Zi provides the peak, and Chen opens its storage to receive. This is the strongest Water formation the branch system can produce, and Shen is its starting point — the place where Water first draws breath from Metal.
3. Yin-Shen (寅申) Clash → Wood and Metal in head-on collision
Shen (Metal) and [[Yin]] (Tiger, Wood) sit directly opposite each other in the branch circle, forming a [[Six Clash]]. This is one of the most violent clashes in the system. Both branches are yang, both carry three hidden stems, and the collision sends shockwaves across multiple elements simultaneously: Shen's 庚 Metal clashes with Yin's 甲 Wood (the classic Metal-chops-Wood conflict), Yin's 丙 Fire retaliates against Shen's 庚 Metal (Fire melting Metal), and both carry 戊 Earth (a neutral standoff). The result is a multi-elemental disruption — not a single clean break but a complex explosion that shakes loose whatever the involved pillar positions represent.
4. Yin-Si-Shen (寅巳申) Punishment → the punishment of ingratitude
The Yin-Si-Shen triangle forms the 无恩之刑 — the [[punishment]] of ingratitude. What should be a smooth handoff of energy along the production cycle (Wood → Fire → Metal) turns into a three-way tangle where each branch undermines the one that gave it life. Yin (Wood) feeds Si (Fire), Si's Fire should refine Shen's Metal, but Shen's Metal turns around and attacks Yin's Wood. The classical reading is betrayal of a benefactor — receiving help and then harming the giver. Even a partial version — just Si-Shen or Yin-Shen in adjacent pillars — can trigger this dynamic.
5. Shen-Hai (申亥) Harm → Metal meets Water in a draining pull
Shen and [[Hai]] (Pig, Water) form a [[Six Harm]] pair. The harm operates differently from a clash: instead of a head-on collision, it is a sideways pull that exhausts the parties involved. Metal produces Water in the generation cycle — this is a productive relationship on the surface. But the harm means the production never stops: Metal keeps pouring itself into Water until it is depleted. Shen's 庚 feeds Hai's 壬 endlessly, draining the very strength that defines it. For a chart that relies on Metal's sharpness, the Shen-Hai harm softens the blade.

戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.5)

The Shen-Zi-Chen Water three harmony is complete across the year, month, and day branches. Shen in the year branch contributes the birth of Water (壬 at its 长生 stage), Zi in the month provides peak Water (癸 at 帝旺), and Chen in the day opens its Water storage (癸 at 墓库). For the 甲 Day Master, this creates a powerful Resource current flowing through the chart — Water nourishes Wood. The combined Direct Resource tally of 1.3 plus Indirect Resource of 0.5 gives a total Resource weight of 1.8, a substantial support structure.
But Shen's main qi does not vanish just because a three harmony forms. The 庚 (Seven Killings) still registers at 2.0 across the chart — the visible year stem 庚 plus the hidden 庚 inside Shen. This is heavy external pressure: authority, challenge, the demand to perform under scrutiny. The Day Master receives both nourishment (Water Resource) and discipline (Metal Seven Killings) simultaneously, and that tension defines the chart.
The highest-weighted ten god is Indirect Wealth at 2.6, scattered across four separate pockets — the visible month stem 戊 plus hidden 戊 in Shen, Chen, and Yin. Wealth is everywhere, but it is the indirect variety (偏财), suggesting unconventional income streams or wealth that arrives through opportunism rather than stable salary. The hour branch Yin (寅) anchors a Friend (甲, 1.0) and an Eating God (丙, 0.5), giving the Day Master both self-strength and creative output to work with.
Chart B — Yin-Shen clash with double collision
丙 Eating God (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
壬 Indirect Resource (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
己 Direct Wealth (0.5)
Weighted totals — Seven Killings 2.0 · Friend 2.0 · Indirect Wealth 1.6 · Hurting Officer 1.0 · Direct Resource 1.0 · Eating God 0.5 · Indirect Resource 0.5 · Direct Wealth 0.5
Shen in the month branch clashes head-on with Yin (寅) in the year branch — the 寅申冲, Wood versus Metal, Tiger versus Monkey. The year-month axis represents the person's background (year) against their career and social world (month), so this clash plays out as a fundamental tension between where they came from and where they are heading. But that is only half the story. The day branch Wu (午, Fire) clashes with the hour branch Zi (子, Water) — the 子午冲 across the self-children axis. This is a chart defined by two simultaneous collisions.
The Seven Killings total of 2.0 (visible 庚 plus hidden 庚 inside Shen) matches the Friend total of 2.0 (visible hour stem 甲 plus hidden 甲 inside Yin). This is a standoff between external pressure and self-strength, neither side yielding. The Day Master has enough root to absorb the blow — the 甲 inside Yin and the 甲 in the hour stem provide solid footing — but the attack from 庚 Seven Killings is equally relentless.
Meanwhile, the Fire and Water elements fight their own battle across the day-hour divide. Wu (午) hides 丁 Hurting Officer (1.0) and 己 Direct Wealth (0.5), while Zi (子) hides 癸 Direct Resource (1.0). The Day Master's creative output (Hurting Officer) and its support system (Direct Resource) are being pulled apart by the clash. In practice, this often manifests as a life where talent and support never quite line up at the same time — opportunity arrives when resources are thin, and stability arrives when the drive to create has moved on. Yet the visible 戊 (Indirect Wealth) above Yin and the double 甲 on the stem row show that the Day Master has both wealth potential and self-strength to survive the turbulence.
六 How Common Shen Is
Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations, Shen (申) appears as the day branch in 43,200 charts (8.3%), as the month branch in another 43,200 (8.3%), and in at least one of the four branch positions in approximately 152,375 charts (29.4%). These figures are identical for every earthly branch — the sixty Jiazi cycle distributes them evenly. Having Shen in your chart is not rare or special in itself; what matters is where it sits, what it meets, and how its three hidden stems interact with your Day Master.
