一 What You (酉) Actually Is
You 酉 is the tenth of the twelve [[earthly branches]], a yin Metal branch whose animal is the Rooster. For the underlying framework, see Earthly Branches in Bazi: The Twelve Characters and Their Hidden Stems.
| Branch | 酉 You |
|---|---|
| Animal | Rooster 🐓 |
| Element | Metal |
| Polarity | Yin |
| Month | 8th solar month (白露 Bailu to 寒露 Hanlu — roughly early September to early October) |
| Hour | 17:00–19:00 (the Rooster hour, late afternoon into dusk) |
| Hidden stem | 辛 Xīn (Yin Metal) — weight 1.0 |
You hides exactly one [[hidden stem]]: 辛 Xīn, Yin Metal, at full weight. That makes it one of only three "pure" branches — alongside Zi 子 (which hides only 癸 Water) and Mao 卯 (which hides only 乙 Wood). When you see You in a chart, you are looking at concentrated, undiluted Metal with no secondary elements mixed in.
Within the twelve-stage cycle of Metal's development, You occupies the [[帝旺]] (emperor/peak) position. This is Metal at maximum strength — not still being forged, not yet rusting, but at its absolute zenith. Every other branch that contains Metal holds it in a rising or falling phase. You holds it at the top. The 8th solar month it governs is the peak of autumn, the season when Metal energy reaches full intensity — the harvest is complete, the air turns sharp, and everything extraneous falls away.
The classical image for You is the finished blade: clean, refined, concentrated. Where Shen 申, the branch that precedes it, is the ax being forged — raw Metal still mixed with Water and Earth inside, the heat of the furnace still present — You is the polished edge that emerges after. The impurities are gone. What remains is pure cutting power. This is why You and Mao form the purest opposing pair in the entire branch circle: undiluted Metal facing undiluted Wood, blade against living stem, with no secondary elements on either side to absorb the impact.
二 Where to Find You in Your Chart
A [[Four Pillars]] chart arranges eight characters in four columns (the pillars) and two rows. The top row holds the [[heavenly stems]]; the bottom row holds the earthly branches. You can appear in any of the four branch positions:
- Year branch — You were born in a Rooster year (e.g., 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029).
- Month branch — You were born during the 8th solar month, from the 白露 Bailu solar term to just before 寒露 Hanlu. This falls roughly in September on the Western calendar, though exact dates shift by a day or two each year. This is peak autumn — the strongest Metal month of the year.
- Day branch — The day you were born falls on one of the sixty [[Jiazi]] cycle days that pairs with 酉. This repeats every twelve days and has nothing to do with the calendar month.
- Hour branch — You were born between 17:00 and 19:00 in [[true solar time]] (adjusted for your birth longitude, not the clock on the wall). Late afternoon — the sun descending, the day's work being weighed and judged.
三 How to Read You
Knowing where You appears is the first step. What it means for your specific chart depends on how its hidden stem relates to your [[Day Master]] — the heavenly stem sitting atop your day pillar. The method is easier to compare with Shen (申) Earthly Branch: the Monkey, Yang Metal, and What It Means in Your Bazi Chart.
The hidden stem and your Day Master
You's single hidden stem is 辛 (Xīn, Yin Metal). To interpret it, you calculate the [[ten god]] relationship between 辛 and your Day Master. Because You contains only one stem at full weight, the resulting ten god arrives at maximum strength with no dilution — the same concentrated quality that Zi and Mao share. Here are several common pairings:
| Day Master | 辛 Xīn becomes… | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jiǎ (Yang Wood) | [[Direct Officer]] | Metal controls Wood — You brings authority, structure, and discipline to the Day Master. Pure, concentrated regulation. |
| 丙 Bǐng (Yang Fire) | [[Direct Wealth]] | Fire controls Metal — You represents what the Day Master can acquire and manage. Steady, reliable returns. |
| 戊 Wù (Yang Earth) | [[Hurting Officer]] | Earth produces Metal — You carries the Day Master's creative output, sharp insights, and unconventional expression. |
| 庚 Gēng (Yang Metal) | [[Rob Wealth]] | Metal meets Metal of opposite polarity — You introduces competition, a rival presence drawing from the same resources. |
| 壬 Rén (Yang Water) | [[Direct Resource]] | Metal produces Water — You nourishes the Day Master with support, knowledge, and mentorship. |
Compare this clarity to a branch like Shen 申, which hides three stems at fractional weights — 庚 Yang Metal at 1.0, 壬 Water at 0.5, and 戊 Earth at 0.3 — spreading its influence across multiple ten god categories. You puts all its weight behind a single one. Where Shen is complex, You is simple but intense. You know exactly what you are getting.
Pillar position matters
The same ten god reads differently depending on which pillar You occupies:
- Year branch — Ancestry, grandparents, early childhood environment. You here colors the family background you were born into, lending it a quality of Metal: discipline, precision, or an environment where standards were high and structure was imposed.
- Month branch — Career, social standing, the world you operate in during adulthood. You as month branch is especially significant because it is also the literal month indicator: you were born in the peak of Metal season. The element is not just present — it is in season and at maximum strength. For a Wood Day Master, this means being born when the element that controls you is at its most powerful. A challenging but character-defining placement.
- Day branch — The self, the spouse, the inner world. You here sits directly beneath your Day Master and often describes the dynamics of your closest relationship.
- Hour branch — Children, aspirations, the later phase of life. You here points toward legacy and the direction your energy flows in your final decades, colored by refined, exacting Metal.
Wherever You appears, it brings concentrated yin Metal — refined, precise, quietly sharp. A chart with You is never Metal-neutral.
四 When You Plays Out Differently
No branch operates in isolation. Its behavior shifts depending on which other branches share the chart. Here are five key interactions involving You, each verifiable by checking the branch relationships in the calculator. This point connects directly with Xu (戌) Earthly Branch: the Dog, Dry Earth and Hidden Fire.
1. Chen-You (辰酉) six harmony — Earth and Metal bind together
When Chen 辰 and You 酉 appear in adjacent pillars, they form one of the [[six harmony]] pairs. This combination transforms toward Metal. Chen is an Earth storage branch whose dominant hidden stem is 戊 (Yang Earth), and Earth produces Metal in the five-element cycle. The result is that Chen's Earth energy feeds directly into You's already-pure Metal nature, strengthening it rather than pulling it in a different direction. Unlike some six harmonies that redirect a branch away from its native element, Chen-You reinforces what You already is — Metal becomes even more Metal. If your chart depends on You for Metal-related ten gods, the presence of Chen next door amplifies that contribution.
2. Si-You-Chou (巳酉丑) three harmony — the Metal bureau
When Si 巳, You 酉, and Chou 丑 all appear among the four branch positions, they form the [[three harmony]] Metal bureau. This is the most concentrated Metal formation possible — all three branches lock together and push the chart's Metal total to its maximum. You is the center of this trio (the "emperor" position), the branch that defines the element. Si contributes Fire that forges Metal; Chou contributes Earth that stores and preserves it. Together they create an overwhelming Metal presence. If your chart contains Si-You-Chou, Metal is not just present; it dominates.
3. Mao-You (卯酉) clash — the purest of the six clashes
You (Metal) and Mao 卯 (Wood) sit directly opposite each other in the branch circle, forming a [[six clash]]. What makes this clash distinctive is that both branches are "pure" — single hidden stem, full weight. You hides only 辛 (Yin Metal); Mao hides only 乙 (Yin Wood). There are no secondary elements to absorb the impact, muddy the interaction, or offer a path of compromise. Metal chops Wood, Wood resists Metal, and one side must give. It is the cleanest, most decisive of all six clashes — two single-element forces colliding head-on. Which branch prevails depends on seasonal strength (You born in autumn has Metal in season) and whether the visible heavenly stems support one side over the other.
4. You-You (酉酉) self-punishment — too much refinement turns brittle
When two You branches appear in the same chart, they form a self-[[punishment]] (自刑). You is one of only four branches — alongside Chen 辰, Wu 午, and Hai 亥 — capable of this formation. The classical logic is that doubling a pure element past its natural limit causes it to turn against itself. Two You branches mean double-strength refined Metal with nowhere for the energy to go. In the metaphor of the blade: one edge cuts cleanly; two edges pressed together do not become twice as sharp — they chip. The reading is of excessive rigidity, perfectionism that undermines itself, or standards so exacting that nothing can meet them.
5. You-Xu (酉戌) harm — a slow corrosive pull
Unlike the sudden collision of a clash, the You-Xu 戌 [[harm]] operates as a slow, grinding friction. Xu is an Earth storage branch, but it holds 丁 (Yin Fire) among its hidden stems — and Fire is what melts Metal. The interaction is not dramatic; it is corrosive. You's refined Metal sits next to a branch that quietly threatens to undo it from the inside. In chart interpretation, this often shows up as a situation that appears stable on the surface but is being worn down over time — a relationship or arrangement where hidden tensions accumulate without any single breaking point.
五 Real Charts
Chart A — You forming Chen-You six harmony in the month branch
庚 Seven Kill. 0.5
戊 Ind. Wealth 0.3
乙 Rob Wealth 0.5
癸 Dir. Resource 0.3
Weighted totals — Direct Resource: 2.3 | Indirect Wealth: 1.3 | Eating God: 1.0 | Direct Officer: 1.0 | Direct Wealth: 1.0 | Friend: 1.0 | Seven Killings: 0.5 | Rob Wealth: 0.5
The defining feature of this chart is the six harmony between You in the month branch and Chen 辰 in the day branch — the 辰酉合金, transforming toward Metal. You's pure 辛 (Direct Officer) sits right next to Chen's Earth-dominant storage, and the harmony amplifies the Metal signal. For the 甲 Jia Wood Day Master, this means the element that controls it — Metal as Officer — is being actively reinforced by the very branch that sits beneath the Day Master's own seat.
Direct Officer (辛 from You) represents authority, structure, and regulation. With the Chen-You harmony strengthening this Metal, the Day Master lives under concentrated institutional pressure — rules, expectations, hierarchies. But the chart does not leave the Day Master unsupported. The visible 癸 in the month stem and hidden 癸 in both Chen (0.3) and Zi (1.0) push Direct Resource to a total of 2.3 — the highest-weighted ten god in the chart. Water nourishes Wood, and this strong Resource flow provides the knowledge, backing, and resilience the Day Master needs to operate under Metal's discipline rather than be crushed by it.
Notice the year branch Si 巳. Together with You in the month, it provides two of the three branches needed for the Si-You-Chou Metal three harmony (巳酉丑). Only Chou 丑 is missing. If a Chou arrives in a [[luck pillar]] or annual pillar, the full Metal bureau locks in and Metal becomes the chart's ruling force — Officer energy at overwhelming strength. Until then, the two-thirds formation sits as latent potential, a Metal reservoir waiting for its final piece.
Chart B — Mao-You clash, the purest collision
壬 Ind. Resource 0.5
戊 Ind. Wealth 0.3
Weighted totals — Direct Officer: 1.0 | Rob Wealth: 1.0 | Hurting Officer: 1.0 | Seven Killings: 1.0 | Direct Wealth: 1.0 | Friend: 1.0 | Direct Resource: 1.0 | Indirect Resource: 0.5 | Indirect Wealth: 0.3
This chart puts You and Mao in direct opposition — the 卯酉冲, the purest of all six clashes. You sits in the year branch hiding 辛 (Direct Officer) at full weight; Mao sits in the month branch hiding 乙 (Rob Wealth) at full weight. One stem of refined Metal faces one stem of gentle Wood, with nothing on either side to dilute the collision. Authority versus competition, structure versus flexibility, the blade against the vine.
The year-month position makes the clash especially significant. The year branch represents the person's roots — family, ancestry, the world they came from. The month branch represents their career and social environment — the world they operate in as adults. A clash across these two pillars means the foundation and the public life are pulling in opposite directions. The Day Master lives in the tension between where they came from (Metal discipline, You's officer energy) and where they work (Wood competition, Mao's rob wealth energy).
Look at the rest of the chart to see which side is winning. Shen 申 in the day branch provides heavy Metal reinforcement — hidden 庚 (Seven Killings) at 1.0 backs You's Metal side. But the Day Master itself is 甲 Wood, and 甲 appears again in the hour stem as Friend, lending its weight to Mao's Wood camp. The hour branch Zi 子 holds 癸 Water (Direct Resource), which produces Wood — another point for Mao's side. The chart is almost evenly divided: Metal forces concentrated in the year and day branches, Wood forces in the month and hour. Seven of the nine ten gods weigh exactly 1.0 each, producing one of the most balanced — and most contested — distributions possible. Neither element dominates. The Day Master does not get to coast; every pillar demands negotiation.
六 How Common You Is
Across all 518,400 possible Four Pillars combinations, You (酉) appears as the day branch in 43,200 charts (8.3%), as the month branch in another 43,200 (8.3%), and in at least one of the four branch positions in approximately 152,375 charts (29.4%). These numbers are identical for every earthly branch — the sixty Jiazi cycle distributes the twelve branches evenly, so no branch is rarer or more common than any other.
What does vary is the combination of You with specific heavenly stems and the other branches in the same chart. The Chen-You six harmony requires both branches in adjacent pillars — a much narrower slice of the combination space. The full Si-You-Chou three harmony demands all three branches land in the right positions, narrower still. And double You (the self-punishment configuration from section four) is rarer than a single You, though not as rare as a full three harmony — it requires only that two of the four branch slots draw the same value from the sixty-cycle pool.
